Secondary School Placement All the Secondary School placement notices were mailed out to families on Monday. A Flexibuzz notice was also sent to alert parents to the fact that the notice was mailed out. A couple of notices have been returned due to incorrect addresses. Please ensure all your details are up to date. Any changes need to be given to Cynthia/Maddie in the office. It is vital that our records are accurate and up to date. It seems that most children were given their first preferences and are happy with their placement for 2019. Values Tree Our values tree in the staffroom is filling up. It is great to see the children displaying the school values in a variety of ways. Please take the time and come and have a read. Foundation Writing The Foundation children’s writing is progressing well. I went into a writing session the other day and was so pleased to see the progress the children have made over the year. For Principal’s Day each Foundation grade made me a book and the entries were absolutely delightful! It was interesting to see their drawings and it highlighted for me how much they truly do notice!
Principal’s Day A big thankyou to all the staff and students that congratulated me, made cards and put on a spectacular morning tea for Principal’s day. It was truly appreciated and humbling! Thank you for all the kind words. Principal’s Morning Tea On August 15th I will have my Principal’s morning tea from 9.15am. This will be the only one of the term as I go on Long Service Leave from the 10th of September. It is a great forum for a chat and to discuss a few issues. Regards, Palma Coppa Principal

CHAPLIANS CHAT WITH DAVE My Catch Phrase When my three teenagers were children, it was so easy to spend most of my time telling them what they were doing wrong. Having three kids in three years meant they were always up to something. Because I didn’t want to focus on the negatives, I came up with a phrase to help me look for positives – because that’s who I want them to become. "Catch them doing something right and tell on them!" We all want to be noticed. We repeat actions that get us attention. That’s human nature. We become the ‘me’ that gets noticed. Catching (and praising) your kids for doing the right thing is very powerful. It can change an attitude for life! You could catch them smiling, sharing, playing, creating, listening, sleeping, eating, or any positive action you want to see more of in your child. Let them know you saw what they did and that they are awesome! "Catch them doing something right and tell on them!" Once you’ve caught them doing something right, make it a priority to ‘tell on them’. This takes careful consistent effort as a parent. When kids do something wrong, it usually makes a good story. So we tell it – to family, friends, teachers, even strangers! It lets others share the parenting journey with us. Hearing a story about yourself forms your identity as much as what actually happened to you. A story about you is attention given to you. So every story reinforces the behaviour in the story. Each time you hear a story about yourself, it becomes more and more ‘who you are.’ Choose carefully the stories you tell about your kids – especially in front of them. Ask, “Is this story about who I want them to become?” We become the stories we hear and tell about ourselves. Choose the positive stories and tell them often. Then watch your children shine!

SAKG NEWS Gardening gives the students space to build skills, independence and experience tremendous satisfaction in doing a job well. This week was the beginning of a new initiative, in addition to regular garden sessions, aimed at further enhancing these opportunities for growth. Each term a new group will come out to the garden on a Wednesday to expand on more challenging and skilled aspects of gardening. We’ve started with fruit tree pruning exploring the cleaning and maintenance of tools, plant health and pest control. It was fantastic to see the enthusiasm and intense concentration our students gave their work and their obvious devotion to their garden. Pictured are some of our 5/6 students who put extraordinary effort into mulching the orchard area today. They moved two cubic metres of mulch in 80 minutes, what an achievement! See you in the garden, Jane Humphrys

YOUR HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED Let’s Eat has found a new home within the Banksia Room. Thanks to Mrs Coppa & Mr Gowans being on board the idea of reaching out to help others in our community. Not to mention the idea of Dorset Primary being a school where we are in service of others less fortunate than ourselves. Hundreds of sandwiches are being made for children at our school & children at other schools in our area. Bread & fruit is also sorted & delivered for those going without. Donations from families within our school would be greatly, greatly appreciated & have already come in from several parents. Items such as sliced, processed cheese, Vegemite, margarine, cling wrap are very much needed & help so much. They definitely don’t have to be the branded items or high cost. Every item helps & will be gratefully received. Many thanks to Matthew Rose who sacrificed a day of his time to move furniture & help clean the Banksia Room from top to bottom. Shay Gillespie is giving each Tuesday morning to make sandwiches & give her positive, happy spin which is amazing & I am so grateful for. Anyone wishing to help on a Tuesday morning is welcome & can approach Shay or myself to be put on the roster. Thanks to Dave Edgren who donates crates of fruit each week & helps to keep me motivated & focussed. Thank you to Lauren Vanek who is a delivery driver of bread & rolls each day from my house when most people are only just getting out of bed. Thanks also to Maddie & Cynthia who help every day in ways they probably don’t even realise but their kindness & positive attitudes help so much. Thanks to all the parents & teachers who have made a big difference to me personally with their ideas & friendliness, because without a great community at Dorset, I can’t do any of what I do or get my volunteering goals off the ground. I appreciated everyone’s help & support. Leah Bishop.

Book Fair 2018 Dear parents/guardians, It is that time of year again where we celebrate Book Week. Book Week is an annual celebration that schools and public libraries across Australia take part in to recognise all Australian authors and illustrators. This year, Dorset students have the opportunity to participate in a Book Parade where they have the choice to dress up as their favourite author, illustrator or book character. The children will participate in a parade held on the 5th of September at approximately 9.15am. During Book Week, the Literacy Resource Centre will be holding a ‘Book Fair’ in which students and their families are able to come into the Library after school and purchase an array of different books, stationary, games and toys. The fair this year is being run by Scholastic and has been an extremely successful fundraiser for the Literacy Resource Centre in previous years. All proceeds made during the Book Fair will go towards purchasing new literacy resources for the students over the next year. The Library will be open from 3.30pm until 4.30pm on Wednesday the 29th of August until Wednesday the 7th of September. I thank the Dorset Community for supporting this exciting opportunity for the children and look forward to an exciting week ahead! Lauren Thorsen Digital Technologies and Library teacher.
