Pastor Todd and DMCC hosted the WBFF Fox 45 Town Hall Meeting on Tuesday, May 14, 2015 at 8 pm. The
topic was “Baltimore Moving Forward” in response to the unrest in the city following the death of Freddie Gray.
The meeting was open to the public and facilitated by news anchors Kai Jackson and Jennifer Gilbert.
In the 60's, I marched, picketed at Northwood Shopping Center and Gwynn Oak Park, and sat in at McCrory's 5 and
10¢ Store to help achieve justice and equality for my people. I experienced the riots of 1968 which resulted in looting and
destruction in our City. Today, we all witnessed violence, looting and destruction in the city due the death of a 25 year
old young black man, Freddie Gray.
When the State's Attorney, Marilyn Mosby announced charges against the 6 involved police officers, I cried as I listened
to the timeline of the events leading to Freddie's death. At the same time, I was pleased that Ms. Mosby acted
expeditiously and professionally to arrive at the charges. I was compelled to go to Pennsylvania and North Avenues to
celebrate with My People in the first step forward in what promises to be a high profile court case. There I was, on the
corner taking photos, of course, and raising my fist, giving "Power to the People" as cars drove by honking horns in
jubilation.
The fight for Justice and equality continues. This case will be watched by the Nation. It is my hope that the issues of
economic deprivation and lack of jobs will be addressed and police conduct will be thoroughly reviewed and policies
developed to change the status quo nationwide.

By Beverly Reid More Than Just Sisters
Diya Hafiz and Waqiba Strother are more than just sisters and are servants of God who display the love of Jesus to
others on a daily basis. What have they done at our church? They are the young, friendly, cheerful, intelligent and very
talented ladies who are helpers in many phases of our church program.
They serve as our ushers. Diya is our Moderator who keeps our meetings orderly. Waqiba is our Treasurer who helps to
keep our finances organized and serves as a member of our GUI-dance, which ministers to us with movements to God’s
glory.
They both serve as mentors to many young people and as friends to others. Whenever there is a race or marathon, you
can count on their participation. They are in daily contact with other family members especially their Mom, Mrs. Sandra
Hafiz. If anyone needs a helping hand, both sisters as well as George Strother (Waqiba’s husband, and the “third part” of
this two-some of sisters) are more than willing to help.
Before Ms. Beonia Jeter died in March, 2013, Diya and Waqiba were very dear friends with her. During her illness, they
befriended her sister Thelma, who has stated that she will never forget the love and care shown to her by these sisters.
Ms. Jeter and I were best friends who had worked through the years with the Douglas Church school. Since Ms. Jeter
died, a close relationship has developed between the sisters and me, that they have said is the will of God.

Meals on Wheels Volunteers Honored for Years of Service
On Monday, April 20, the Douglas Church Meals on Wheels team sur-
prised Donald Coleman with a celebration in honor of his 25 years of
service. Mr. Coleman recently retired after completing a quarter century
of volunteer service delivering meals to seniors and sick/shut-in commu-
nity persons.
In his note to the “MOW Crew”, Mr. Coleman wrote, “My journey with
all of you since 1990 was a labor of love. Thank you for showing your
love and concern. May God continue to bless you.”
Continuing the celebration, on Monday, June 8, the MOW staff honored Geraldine Young, who retired after
30 years of volunteer service. At the reception, other volunteers were honored with certificates to
acknowledge their many years of dedicated service. Gwen Barbour has served for 20 years, Novella Brown
for 15 years and Cynthia Parker for 10 years. The Douglas MOW Volunteer of the Year was Patricia Contee
(pictured below, back row, far left).

The May 2015 issue of Essence Magazine is their
45th Anniversary edition and features the “Ageless
Beauties” article by Pamela Edwards Christiani, high-
lighting six beautiful Black women from age 42-95.
Our own ageless beauty, Aunt Ruth Brown of Law-
renceville, Virginia is pictured on page 16 in a column
titled “What’s on Your Mind?”
The section on Aunt Ruth reads, “If you’re lucky, you’ll
glimpse centenarian Ruth Brown ‘walking everywhere’ in
her small town. She counts ‘eating healthy, joining a
church, being around young people and reading’ as the
keys to the fountain of youth…”
The column quotes Aunt Ruth on her definition of
ageless beauty, “Don’t carry grudges. Get the most ful-
fillment out of life and everything that God has given
you.”
Aunt Ruth Brown will celebrate her 107th birthday
in August.
