Day Care Centers To Receive Help fromThe D.O.V.E. FUND

Flood waters cause problems for daycare centers in Quang Tri.

Located in the low lands of Quang Tri province, an area that is especiallyvulnerable to flooding each year during the rainy season, are two daycarecenters in need of upgrades and expansion. The existing daycare center in DaiHao village was built in 1998 and is in critical need of repair. With 96 children, the two classrooms do not provide nearly enough space to separate the 3, 4and 5-year old students.

Trieu Thuan Daycare Center is also located in a poor area of Quang TriProvince. Most of the 4500 people who live there are involved in fishing andfarming with incomes that are very low since their work is highly dependent onthe weather. The existing daycare center was built in 2000 with three smallclassrooms and a little kitchen. With a total 101 kids ranging in age from 3 to6, there is a serious overcrowding condition.

As the population has grown in the last twenty years, daycare centers inQuang Tri province have become increasingly stressed. For safety and propercare, local officials agree that an ideal classroom should have 25 children andtwo teachers. There is also some concern that the current overcrowdingcondition will cause infectious diseases to spread more easily. In addition, every year there are 25 to 30 two-year-old children who can’t attend theschool because there isn’t enough room. Sending kids to school for daycare isurgent because parents need to work in the fields and rivers to provide incomefor the family.
