Third Sunday of Advent (Cycle B) A Sunday Reflection REJOICE ALWAYS. PRAY WITHOUT CEASING (1 Thess 5:16).

In the midst of Advent, the Church invites us to rejoice. But not only to rejoice; also to pray without ceasing and to always give thanks. What would be the reason for such rejoicing and thanksgiving? The Second Person of the Blessed Trinity, our Lord Jesus Christ, has taken on our human flesh and has been born among us, and we will again celebrate His birth shortly. That is plenty of reason to rejoice!

Today we encounter the figure of John the Baptist, a model of joy, the one who leaped for joy in the womb of Elizabeth. John invites us to purify our vision and to ask ourselves if Christ is the reason for our joy.

In his Angelus address for this Sunday in 2014, Pope Francis said: “Jesus has come to bring joy to all people for all time. It is not just a hopeful joy or a joy postponed until paradise…. No! It is not that, but a joy already real and tangible now, because Jesus himself is our joy, and with Jesus joy finds its home.” May the joy of this Sunday remain with us as we prepare for Christmas and always. Come, Lord Jesus!

Reflexión Dominical VIVAN SIEMPRE ALEGRES. OREN SIN CESAR (1 Ts 5,16).

En la mitad del Adviento, la Iglesia nos invita a alegrarnos. Y no solo a alegrarnos; también a orar sin cesar y a dar gracias siempre. ¿Cuál sería la razón de esta alegría y acción de gracias? La Segunda Persona de la Santísima Trinidad, nuestro Señor Jesucristo, ha tomado nuestra carne mortal y ha nacido entre nosotros, y pronto celebraremos otra vez Su nacimiento. ¡Es razón más que suficiente para alegrarnos!

Nos encontramos hoy con la figura de Juan el Bautista, modelo de alegría, que saltó de gozo en las entrañas de Isabel. Juan nos invita a purificar nuestra mirada y a preguntarnos si Cristo es la razón de nuestra alegría.

Decía el papa Francisco durante el Angelus de este domingo en 2014: “Jesús vino a traer la alegría a todos y para siempre. No se trata de una alegría que solo se puede esperar o postergar para el momento que llegue el paraíso.... ¡No! No es esta, sino una alegría que ya es real y posible de experimentar ahora, porque Jesús mismo es nuestra alegría, y con Jesús la alegría está en casa”. Que la alegría de este domingo permanezca con nosotros al prepararnos para esta Navidad y siempre. ¡Ven, Señor Jesús!

The “O” AnTiphOns

The O Antiphons, also known as The Great Os are Magnificat antiphons used at Vespers of the last seven days of Advent as well as the alleluia verses on the same days in the Mass.

They are referred to as the "O Antiphons" because the title of each one begins with

the interjection "O", and each one names one of the attributes of Christ mentioned in Scripture. They are:

December 17: O Sapientia (O Wisdom) December 18: O Adonai (O Lord)

December 19: O Radix Jesse (O Root of Jesse) December 20: O Clavis David (O Key of David)

December 21: O Oriens (O Dayspring) December 22: O Rex Gentium (O King of the nations)

December 23: O Emmanuel (O With Us is God)

The exact origin of the O Antiphons is not known, but their use was prevalent in monasteries and it may be concluded that in some fashion the O Antiphons have been part of our liturgical tradition since the very early Church.

The first letters of the titles taken backwards appear to form a Latin acrostic “Ero cras” which translates to "Tomorrow, I will be [there]". Therefore, the Lord Jesus, for whose coming we have prepared in Advent and whom we have addressed in these seven Messianic titles, now speaks to us: Tomorrow, I will come. So the O Antiphons not only bring intensity to our Advent preparation, but bring it to a joyful conclusion.

Antífonas de Adviento

Las antífonas de Adviento, también conocidas como antífonas mayores, o antífonas O (por la letra con la que comienzan) son antífonas utilizadas en la Liturgia de las Horas, durante las vísperas de los últimos días de Adviento, y forman el verso del Aleluya recitado antes del Evangelio en la Misa de los días de semana entre el 17 y el 23 de diciembre. Las primeras letras de los títulos leídas en sentido inverso forman el acróstico latino «Ero Cras», que significa «Mañana, yo vendré», y reflejan el tema de las antífonas. Así Jesús, para cuya venida se han preparado los cristianos durante el Adviento y a quien se dirigen con estos siete títulos mesiánicos, les habla ahora: Mañana vendré. De este modo, las antífonas de Adviento no sólo infunden intensidad a la preparación del Adviento, sino que lo conducen hacia su alegre fin.

The annual Christmas Eve concert will be held on December 24 at 11 pm, followed by midnight Mass. This year we have added a Family Mass at 3:30 pm as well as the usual 5:30 pm on Christmas Eve. On Christmas Day Masses will be at 10:30 am and 5:30 pm in English and at 12:30 pm in Spanish. All will be live streamed, except for the 3:30 pm on Christmas Eve and 5:30 pm on Christmas Day. Make sure to sign up as for Sunday Mass. El concierto anual de Nochebuena se celebrará a las 11 pm del 24 de diciembre, seguido de la misa de medianoche. BLESSING OF THE PENCILS Father Luis blessed the 8th graders and their pencils as they prepare to take their high school entrance exams. This year the 8th graders were also presented with the "St. Hugh of Lincoln Relic" for the celebration of the 60th anniversary of our church and school.
