Nancy Conrad Passed Away.

Leonard Conrad's wife, Nancy (Babe as

he always called her), was a great lady.

Who knew how talented and special she

was.

Nancy McKee Balderston Conrad, age 85

of Colora, MD passed away Friday, No-

vember 2, 2012 surrounded by her loving

family. Nancy was born in Rising Sun,

MD on February 13, 1927 to the late

Richard Mead and Rachel (McKee) Bal-

derston. She attended Westtown High

School and later graduated from P.S. Du-

plished artist, Nancy was the illustrator

and co-author of several historical books.

She used her skills as a seamstress within

many local charitable sewing circles.

Nancy enjoyed riding motorcycles with

her late husband, Leonard and they were

both members of the Retreads and

Harley Dressers. She also spent some

time as a 4-H and Scout leader. Nancy

was a lifelong member of West Notting-

ham Presbyterian Church where she was

actively involved in the choir. Recently,

she was involved with the Elkton Senior

Center where she immensely enjoyed her

bus trips from Colora to Elkton. She was

also a long-time member of the Colora

Quaker Meeting House. Nancy was the great, great, great, great grandchild of Betsy Ross. Nancy is survived by her daughters, Kay

Harley Dressers Christmas Party,

Gettysburg, PA - November 10, 2012

Our Christmas Party in Gettys-

burg is a pleasant way to relax

with our friends, see people we

may not have seen at rallies, re-

new old friendships. Gettysburg

is very central to our members,

kind of meeting in the ‘middle’ so

to speak. It is a social weekend,

and each time we get together it

is a very special evening. Our

Dresser friends are very dear, and

some go back many years, maybe

as long as thirty-five. The bikes

usually stay home, and the Christ-

mas spirit comes out. So do the

reds and greens.

This year the Marines’ anniver-

sary was on November 10th

, and

Veterans Day was the day after.

It was significant to be in Gettys-

burg on these two important

dates. We felt the pride and

patriotism in supporting our mili-

tary, those currently serving our

country, our veterans, and those

gone before us. Our members attended a Veterans Recognition Ceremony at Battlefield Harley Davidson in town.

Our banquet began with the presentation of colors by the Young Marines. Our thanks to Nick D’Apice who gave the blessing, and

remembered our Veterans in his prayer. We also remembered the recent passing of member Nancy Conrad, Leonard’s wife. Andy

Ramult attended her funeral and brought a beautiful remembrance of Nancy to share with us all. She was an extraordinary lady

and will be missed. We were happy to introduce and welcome new members Cliff and Christina Saunders and Phil and Lynette

Zizzo from Long Island. Thanks to Rich Feehan and Bruce Rudis for bringing them into our fold. Our 50-50 winner was Christina

Saunders. We were honored to have Del and Virginia Austin attend. Del founded the Harley Dressers 35 years ago. Ardith and

John Sollers baked coconut cream and chocolate peanut butter pies for Del and Virginia and John Ellis. Del asked that we auction

off his coconut custard pie (a sacrifice for Del) and that the proceeds go to Toys for Tots. John Ellis did the same. Glennadine and

Goldie Gouldman presented the toys to the Young Marines. Thank you everyone for your support each year to this worthwhile

charity.

This year’s Trustees’ Award went to Cassie Kochel for her efforts to sell many bike raffle tickets each year. Cassie can no longer

attend the rallies, but the Dresser Association is dear to her and she continues to give her time and support. We are happy to rec-

ognize her work on behalf of the Association.

Thanks to Jean and Jim Gagnon for making our table centerpieces every year. Jean collects the ‘ingredients’ all through the year in

their travels from Ohio to Arizona, totes them home and puts them all together for the party. This year they fooled those that

were turning their chairs upside down ahead of time, because the winner of the centerpiece was chosen by whose birthday was

closest to November 10th

. Gotcha! Thanks also to Rich Feehan for his efforts to plan and host our Fall Rally in Bolton Landing on

Lake George, NY in September. We loved Melody Manor right on the lake and now have a new hotel location for our week at

Americade. Our International Rally will be July 22-26, 2013 in Wilkesboro, NC.

For those unaware, our members Chuck and Red Weishorn are our Santa and Mrs. Claus. They slipped away from the party unno-

ticed to don their ‘suit and cape’ and were the highlight of the evening when Santa and Mrs. Claus appeared out of nowhere to

wish everyone a Merry Christmas. People were wondering and asking me if Santa was coming. The party just would not be the

same without them! Santa and Mrs. Claus found their way to the big chairs aside the Christmas tree, and … let the photo ops be-

gin! It got us together, out of our seats, with lots of laughs and fun for great colorful pictures with Santa and Mrs. Claus.

We always bring toys to our banquet to give to the Marines Toys for Tots program.

We were honored to have five members of the Young Marines attend, present colors, lead us in the pledge of allegiance and receive the toys. They ranged in age from 13-17 years old and were quite remarkable. Jean Gagnon suggested that we ask each of them to come forward individually to talk about their experiences in the Young Marines and what the organization is about. They had no

idea that they would be asked to speak and gra-ciously accepted our request. We learned that they are a youth education and service program for boys and girls ages 8 through completion of high school, strengthening the lives of America’s youth promot-ing mental, moral, and physical development of its members. The program focuses on character build-ing, leadership, and promotes a healthy, drug-free lifestyle. We also learned that this unit from Hano-ver, PA, has received the honor of being invited to participate in the 2013 Memorial Day Parade in Washington, DC. Several people needed to cancel coming to the Christmas Party after hurricane Sandy hit Long Is-land in NY, and the NJ coastline, so our party was a little smaller this year. Our hearts and prayers go out to families suffering throughout the aftermath of this terrible coastal storm. John Franklin Sr. and Karyn were able to come, and told us that John Jr. and brother Ken both had significant flooding in their homes. John Jr. lost a car and a bike and the whole first floor of their home, and brother Ken also was completely flooded in his one-story home. Ken may not be able to rebuild. Jack and Donna La-Cavalla live in Yonkers and a tree destroyed both of their cars. Jeff and Linda Lash were without power for eight cold days on L.I., and Rich Feehan was cut off for awhile from the mainland on the north fork on Long Island in Orient. All experienced long power outages and long gas lines. Our granddaugh-ter Alex lives in Monmouth Beach, NJ, close to the ocean and their neighborhood was flooded with six feet of water. Fortunately their house is elevated so the flooding did not get inside the main floor. Her school was ruined and they are all being bused to another inland school for the rest of the year. Ride safe and we look forward to seeing many of you in Wilkesboro, NC in July. Remember, you can still enjoy a great vacation with your Dresser friends and come in your car as more members are doing. We wish you health and happiness in the coming year. Eileen & Joe Rogers

Tech-Tip When The Lights Go Out! (Nothing To Do With Motorcycles) When you lose your electric, you will look for a generator for heat, lights and refrigeration. It is a good idea, but a generator needs gas and a lot of it. It requires storage, maintenance and is noisy to run. There is an alternative. Almost everyone has a car or truck with an alternator. You are halfway there. You need to purchase a 1500 watt or bigger inverter at about $200, and jumper cables to attach to your vehicle’s battery. You will have 115 volts to run your heating, lights and refrigeration, but not all at once. Use 13W fluorescent bulbs which equal 60 watts each, and about 6 or 7 bulbs should light most of your rooms. Your vehicle will have to run at 1000 rpm to keep the battery charged and will use about a half gallon of gas an hour. Long extensions of #14 wire up to 50 feet will be required. It would also be to your advantage to have your heating system wired so you can unplug it from its main feed and plug into your auxiliary power. The beauty of an inverter is you can put it on a shelf until you need it, with no maintenance. Not so with a generator. Fill vehicles and a couple of 5 gal. cans at the first warning of a storm. The gas can be used anytime. Please do not store it in your house or attached garage.
