DRUIDS 1 BUCKLEY TOWN 2

Druids continue to baffle their fans with Jeckyl and

Hyde performances. After an excellent home win in

the Welsh Cup against Gresford the erratic home

form surfaced again against Buckley Town. With

only one enforced change from the previous game,

Druids gifted Buckley a two goal half time lead.

The introduction of Steve Blenkinsop for the second

half lifted Druids but although Steve did pull one

goal back Druids never looked like getting anything

from the match as they lost for the fifth time this

season at the Rock.

DRUIDS 1 caersws 0

After being dislodged from the top of the league in

midweek, Druids returned to winning ways against

lowly Caersws at the Rock. A solitary strike from

Dave Forbes on the stroke of half time was all that

separated the sides at the end of a match which

Druids dominated. Despite creating countless

chances Druids could not put the game to bed leav-

ing fans biting their nails until the final whistle.

The result leaves Caersws rooted at the bottom and

lifts Druids back up into second spot with a tough

away match at Holyhead to come next week.

HUWS GRAY ALLIANCE HISTORY Part 8

1997-98 (Continued from previous issues)

With Rhayader Town joining the League of Wales Holywell Town returned to the Cymru Alliance in the opposite direction. Only Rhos Aelwyd were relegated, after the membership of both Lex XI and Ruthin Town, for off-the-field and football reasons respectively appeared to be in danger during the close season. The Ponciau Park outfit were replaced by Welsh Alliance champions Glantraeth and Chirk AAA, winners of the Welsh National League (Wrexham Area).

At the halfway stage in the season, Cefn Druids, Holywell Town, Knighton Town and Rhydymwyn were leading at the top of the table. As the campaign moved towards its climax, the Bryn-y-Castell outfit slipped out of the title race, leaving the other three to battle it out for the championship. Rhydymwyn’s 4-1 home victory over Holywell Town sealed the title for the Vicarage Road club, in only their third season in the Cymru Alliance.

The Halkyn Road club did have the consolation of finishing as runners-up, earning promotion back to the League of Wales at the first time of asking, and also defeating Oswestry Town in the League Cup final. Elsewhere, Llandrindod Wells overwhelmed Montgomeryshire Amateur Leaguers Llanrhaeadr 8-0 in the Central Wales Challenge Cup final, but Penycae were on the wrong end of a 7-1 score line when they met Wrexham Reserves in the North East Wales Challenge Cup final. Knighton Town had their most successful campaign since winning the Mid Wales League in 1992/93, finishing fourth and reaching the last sixteen of the Welsh Cup, a run which included a 4-1 victory over then League of Wales club Conwy United, before losing 8-0 at home to Barry Town.

The Cymru Alliance was well represented in the Third Round of the Welsh Cup as Cefn Druids, Holywell Town, Lex XI, Mold Alexandra and Ruthin Town all reached this stage of the competi-tion.

CLUB SHOP

Thanks to the help of volunteers and an unnamed

sponsor, Cefn Druids new club shop is almost

complete. All that remains is the fitting out of the

interior which will be completed for the official

opening at Druids next home game against Guilsfield

on Friday 23rd of October. This is expected to

coincide with the launch of the on-line shop which is

available through Cefn Druids website

cefndruidsafc.co.uk.

The shop is situated adjacent to the entrance turnstiles

and will be open on all 1st team match days. It will

stock limited merchandise but an extensive range will

be available to order for delivery within 5 to 10 days.

Druids U15’s made a positive start with Harvey Edwards giving them a deserved lead within the first 15 minutes. Then 10 minutes of madness de-termined the outcome of the game.

Druids made many unforced errors through slow play, lack of communication and lack of desire to press the opposition in all areas of the pitch which led to them conceding 4 sloppy goals in the space of 10 minutes.

Down 4-1 at half time led to a very blunt and honest team talk after which Druids came out to completely dominate the second half from start to finish. A new energy and desire to win the ball led Druids to create many opportunities for pos-session in the final 3rd but always lacked a final pass to turn them into goal scoring opportunities. A positive 2nd half which needs to be built on for future games.

Welsh youth cup

Bangor city U19 2 druids u19 1

As expected Bangor City game flying out of the traps and dominated the early exchanges but without really testing the Druids goalkeeper and as the half drew on it was Druids who started to grow in stature and should have taken the lead when Jordan Williams found himself 1on1 with the home keeper who to his credit saved well. The chance had set the tone though and in the 27th minute Kev Day dispossessed a home de-fender and scored with a great finish even though he still had a fair bit to do. The young Druids looked like seeing out the half comfortably and only a fine tip onto the cross bar prevented Druids extending their lead further. However with just a minute to go before half time Druids failed to clear properly when very unluck-ily a clearance hit the back of another defender and landed at the feet of a Bangor forward who slid a low shot into the Druids net. HT 1-1 As expected Bangor again come out strongly but superb defending coupled with some dangerous counter attacks meant the game remained evenly poised. With 20 minutes remaining Bangor were awarded a free kick 15 yards our to the right of the Druids box and it was a Bangor head that rose highest to give the hosts the lead. The final part of the game saw Druids try every-thing possible to draw level including sending everyone including Goalkeeper Callum Geary not once but twice into the Bangor box to contest cor-ners but it was not to be and the hosts held on to progress to the next round. Both teams left the field to a standing ovation from the main stand and Druids have a great chance to gain some early revenge when they host Bangor in a league game at The Rock next Sunday.

Very positive performance against a very Strong Connahs Quay side. The game started with Con-nahs Quay moving the ball very well with Druids keeping a strong defensive line which frustrated Connahs Quay. Connah’s Quay scored half way into the first half and followed quickly with their second. Just before the break Druids kept the ball well and pressured the Connahs Quay defence and had a controversial goal disallowed.

HT 0-2

Second half Druids started the strongest and had a few great chances with the Connahs Quay keeper making some great saves. Finally our pressure payed off, Ben Williams played a great through ball to Callum Foster who rounded the keeper to make it 2-1. Unfortunately our early pressure faded and Connahs Quay gained control of the game and add-ed their 3rd and 4th goals. FT 4-1 Considering we have been together for a few weeks we are really starting to develop into a great team and will only get stronger as the season goes on. With more play-ers to come back into the squad we can really push on. MOM Adrian Krol

A very disappointing result for the Un-der 16's against a well organised and disciplined Connahs Quay side. At half time the score was 3-2 to Connahs Quay. Connahs Quay came out in the second half a far better side and Druids couldn't handle the pace and intensity of the game. Final score 7-2

Team, Hudson Parry, Jack Andrews, Toby Green, Mikey Bagnall, Harry Killick, Jack Turnbull, Ben Rowlands, Tom Garston, Toby Laurie, Harrison Robson, Ben Davis. Subs- Jack Leach-Owen, Jak Evans, Kurt Rushton. Score- 1-7. Goal scorer Ben Davis. After going 1-0 down after ten minutes Cefn Druids responded quickly when Ben Davis latched on a to a loose ball and ran through on goal and excellently slotted past the oncoming goal keeper. The game was well contested during the next 15 minutes until Rhyl managed to take advantage of defensive errors and score 3 goals in the closing stages of the first half. The introduction of Jack Leach-Owen combin-ing with Harrison Robson and Ben Rowlands caused Rhyl problems in the second half, but the hard work of the forwards had little return on the day. After surviving the storm of pressure, Rhyl came back to life during the closing stages and found themselves increasing their lead to 7-1.
