It seems like only yesterday, his eyes were lit with joy,As we watched with admiration, this uniformed little boy.Camp outs, picnics, Pine wood cars, the years slipped quickly by,The colors changed from blue to green, in the twinkling of an eye.

Soon came ranks of Tenderfoot, Second, First, and Star. Each leading towards that final request, once visioned from afar. And then the rank of Life, and as life can often do.The goal so close within his grasp, was dimming from his view.Yet from within he found the strength to reach that final quest,Remembering words from years gone by:I WILL DO MY BEST.

It seems like only yesterday, his eyes were lit with joy,As we watched with admiration, this uniformed little boy.Now with an eagle upon his chest, he soars, where once he ran, No longer that uniformed little boy;our Son...and Eagle...A Man.

John Daniel Cherry is the seventeen year old son of Scott and Susan Cherry . Currently John is a junior at Trinity Christian High School where he takes honors, pre-AP, and AP courses . He is a member of the National Honor Society and has a love for learning . As a member of the Latin Club, he has earned a bronze medal on the National Mythology Exam . John has also competed in Science Olympiad . At the regional meet at Tarleton State University, he earned several top place finishes . Community service has also been a part of his high school experience including a full week of work at the food bank and food bank garden during his freshman year and a week of work at Jacob’s Ladder his sophomore year . He particularly enjoys his history courses at Trinity High and learning about the past firsthand on family vacations . In addition to his academic responsibilities, John works part-time during the school year . John has two older brothers, Thomas and William who are Eagle Scouts in Troop 157 class of 2005 . John is the grandson of the late John D . Cherry and Kathleen Cherry Buffington of Tulsa, Oklahoma as well as the late Leon F . Simpson and Eleanor Simpson of Lubbock . Just as his brothers earned the rank of Eagle Scout on the same day, John and his cousin, Nathaniel Simpson experienced the same accomplishment . As a special honor, John is wearing a Boy Scout ring that his grandfather, John Daniel Cherry, Jr . wore in the late 1930’s . On his Eagle Scout memory table tonight is a photograph of his namesake grandfather when he was at an event titled “Boy Scout Merit Badge Show 1940” in El Paso, Texas, Boy Scout Troop 1 . John’s

other grandfather, Leon Simpson, was also in Boy Scouts during the 1930’s in Post, Texas . John’s father was in Cub Scouts in Crosbyton, Texas . John is proud to carry on the family tradition of being an active member of Boy Scouts .

In Cub Scouts he received his Arrow of Light, and in Boy Scouts he has earned Eagle Scout . During the summer of 2009, John and his cousin, Nathaniel Simpson, earned the God and Country Award, a significant accomplishment earned by a very small percentage of scouts . They met weekly with Mr . Ed Cooper who is both a pastor and teacher . He taught, mentored and encouraged both boys .

For his Eagle Project, John wanted to do something for his church where he is very active in his youth group . John wanted to give back to those who had blessed him in so many areas . He decided to remodel the youth room adding new paneling and custom painting . Also, hand-made letters were made to place a Bible verse on the wall . Although John was not experienced with carpentry and painting, he did not let that get in his way . He sought out the advice and training from men who possessed those skills and learned from them and used that knowledge to complete his project . The skills he learned throughout his Eagle Project will benefit him for the rest of his life .

His Journey to Eagle all of the way from Wolf cub to Eagle Scout has made a lasting impact on John . He has been around men of character in Troop 157 . Thanks to these dedicated volunteers of Troop 157, especially Mr . Payne as scoutmaster, for helping John reach his goal .

He is currently a senior at Lubbock Christian High School . He was chosen Student of the Month his freshman and senior year and Outstanding Band Student his freshman and sophomore year . He plays percussion for Lubbock Christian’s concert band and is in the marching and jazz band . He has participated in the TAPPS state band contest the past three years where Lubbock Christian has received top honors for their concert, jazz and ensemble performances . He played on the varsity football team and also participated in baseball and track . Preston is a member of Green Lawn Church of Christ . For the past nine years, he has been involved in Leadership Training for Christ which is a national organization that encourages and trains young people to actively lead in their church, family, and community . He has participated in bible bowl, chorus, drama, puppets, service, song leading, speech, bible reading, daily devotional, and leadership challenge . During the summer, he volunteers at the church benevolence center and has served as a staff member at the church’s summer camp . This past July he went on a mission trip to Houston where the youth were responsible for leading inner city children in a vacation bible school . This proved to be one of Preston’s favorite church trips . He also participated for several years in a work camp

in Arlington, Texas that involved mowing yards and painting houses . Upon entering first grade, Preston joined Pack 276 in Grand Prairie, Texas . As a cub scout, he earned the Loving Servant award and as a Webelos, the Arrow of Light . Favorite memories include a trip to the USS Lexington, camping out at NASA, and spending the night on the baseball diamond at the Ball Park in Arlington . He also enjoyed the annual summer camps at various locations, including his favorite which was in Colorado . In 2005, he joined Troop 703 in Mansfield, Texas where he earned his Life rank . He also served as troop scribe, assistant patrol leader, and den chief . Preston was fourteen when our family decided to move to Lubbock, and after visiting several troops, he joined Troop 157 in 2010 . While the move was certainly a challenge, it did not hinder his desire to achieve his goal of Eagle Scout . Preston has applied to the United States Air Force Academy and hopes to pursue a career in engineering . He first became interested in the Academy when his Boy Scout Troop stopped by there while camping in Colorado . He also aspires to become an officer in the United States Air Force . For his Eagle Scout Leadership project, Preston planned and organized the installation of playground equipment at Lubbock Christian School . A school representative suggested the project, and while considering other projects, Preston decided on the playground project because of his love and appreciation of Lubbock Christian and the impact that the playground would have on present and future elementary students . The process proved to be a huge undertaking, but with the help of peers and adult leaders, Preston successfully completed the playground . He learned many new skills and lessons while working on this project, but most importantly, he learned from his mistakes and has a better realization of his ability to lead . He takes great pride in watching the young children enjoy their new playground and wants to thank all scouts, leaders and family members who assisted with the project . Preston has always had a kind, generous spirit . He has been very blessed to have many admirable, influential people of all ages in his life through Boy Scouts, church, school, and family who have encouraged him to use his caring spirit to benefit others . Many have given their time, support and guidance to help Preston reach his goal of Eagle Scout . Preston would like to thank his previous and present leaders, Cubmasters Randy Sullivan and Keith Weaver, and Scoutmasters Larry Smith and Brad Payne . He would also like to thank Kevin Pauwels and Scott Voland for their counsel and guidance while transitioning to a new troop . Preston would like to express a special thanks to Scott Scarborough . Scotty’s encouraging words and actions prodded Preston along through every stage of the final project . Lastly, he thanks his family, friends, school leaders and church leaders . Because of their influence, prayers, patience, and love, he was able to achieve his goal of Eagle Scout .

He enjoys

playing basketball for the Westerners and is in his second year at the varsity level . John Michael is also involved in Student Council, National Honor Society, and Youth Entrepreneurial Leadership/Interact organization where he serves as president for the second year . John Michael’s eagle project was completed at the South Plains Wildlife Rehabilitation Center . He visited the center in elementary school and wanted to help the center because of the work they do for animals . The center volunteers must give water to the animals each day . When the weather was cold, the faucets in the yard would freeze, and the volunteers would have to carry water in buckets rather than use the hoses . John Michael’s project included replacing three yard faucets with frost-proof water hydrants . In addition to the hydrants, John Michael and his team also improved the aesthetics of the area by placing stepping stones around each hydrant . The center volunteers are very appreciative of the hydrants and the ease of getting water to the animals .

John Michael is very appreciative of the work and dedication of the adult leaders in Troop 157 . Their guidance and encouragement was instrumental in his reaching his goal of Eagle Scout . He would also like to thank his family for their continuous love and support .

Braden’s project included digging out the nine foot by fifteen foot section of the rocky driveway the gate swung over to open and replace the rocks with a brick driveway . As a result of the project, the gate now swings freely and is no longer being damaged by the rocks and the center has a nice brick drive area .

Braden would like to thank his fellow scouts and the adult leaders of Troop 157 for their guidance and encouragement throughout his journey to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout . Gib’s scouting career began in 2005, as he entered the fifth grade at Roscoe Wilson . He holds the things that he has learned through scouting at great value . Throughout Gib’s 6-year career in scouting, one of his favorite things about scouts has been attending Summer Camp on Lake Murray in Ardmore, Oklahoma . During his summers at camp, Gib served as the Aquatics Director in 2010 and 2011, as well as the Assistant Camp Director in 2011 . Gib currently serves as Troop 157’s Senior Patrol Leader . Additionally, he has maintained various other responsibilities within the troop, including Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Scribe, Patrol Leader, and Quartermaster . For his Eagle Project, Gib installed trash cans and gravel in the Lubbock High School Parking lot . This repurposed area helps to alleviate trash problems that have become evident following the administration of a new school rule that prohibits students from having food and drinks in class .

Gib is currently applying to college and hopes to fulfill his aspirations by pursuing a degree in International Commerce . He plans to utilize the important things that he has learned in scouting during his university years and beyond .

Gib would like to thank everyone who has been involved in his past six years of success here at 157: including his parents, brother, family, Mr . Payne, Dr . Joe Hancock, his fellow scouts, as well as all of the adults who give their time to ensure the success of the troop . Without their help and commitment to scouting, this rank could not have been accomplished . He also wishes to thank all of his friends and family who helped with his Eagle Project, as well as those who agreed to write letters of recommendation on his behalf .

At Lubbock High, Manning is currently taking all AP classes, including two AP History courses . He was inducted into the National Honor Society during his junior year . pursuing a career in the State Department after college .

Manning is also on LHS’s Varsity Golf Team . He played golf from a very early age, but began seriously honing his game in the sixth grade . Manning is the third generation in the Pope family to be in scouting: his father earned the rank of Eagle Scout, and his grandfather the rank of Life Scout . Manning joined Troop 157 during his fifth grade year . By far his favorite part of scouting is the amazing camp experience in Ardmore each summer, where many great skills were acquired and many great memories were made . He was tapped into the Order of the Arrow in the summer of 2009 .

Manning’s Eagle Project began with his love of golf and the desire to share his passion with younger, less privileged kids . The first part of his project was to conduct an equipment drive to collect ten sets of golf clubs to donate to The Boys and Girls Club . He then planned and conducted a two day Golf Clinic for The Boys and Girls Club, which included recruiting and training golf instructors, securing the donation of a logo’d t-shirt for each participant and a banner for the event site . The equipment drive went so well that he was also able to additionally give each clinic participant their own set of golf clubs to take home with them .In addition, the relationship he developed with The Boys and Girls Club director led to an ongoing joint effort between the LHS Golf Team and The Boys and Girls Club, in which the LHS golf team currently volunteers every other Friday by mentoring the B&GC kids while teaching them golf .

In addition to golf, Manning has a real passion for history and geography, which began as soon as he could read and talk . He is a passionate reader on all social studies topics, and because of this interest, loves to travel . So far, his travels have included a trip to San Miguel de Allendre, Mexico where he attended Spanish classes (along with perfecting other skills such as the art of bargaining at the market and taking pictures of “local color”); and to Florence, Italy where he presented an eager audience (his family) with an oral report on the architecture of Brunelleschi’s famous dome .

Manning would like to thank the adult leaders in Troop 157 for their numerous contributions on his journey to Eagle Scout . Brad Payne, Dick Gosdin, Jerry Vance, Charlie Needham, Scott Voland, Joe Rapier, Chuck Smith, and numerous other individuals were key to helping him achieve his goal of Eagle Scout . Manning would also like to thank Steve Massengale of Advanced Graphix, and Tom Vermillion and Jon Ward of The Boys and Girls Club of Lubbock who generously aided him in his service project . He would like to especially thank his family and friends who have supported him through the years with patience and love, and especially to his mother, Denise, who was his “side kick” throughout his whole scouting journey . To all of you, thank you .
