Hello T-birders, wow it's November and Thanksgiving is just around the corner. The first thing
that I want to bring up is that the November meeting at West Valley College has been changed to the 3rd
Friday of the month, November 18th. WVC is closed for Veterans Day and that's why we had to make the change. Please
mark your calendars.
If anyone has any suggestions for possible Blunderbird candidates please let me know. We still have 2 more
months for possibilities for this infamous award so if anyone knows about any humorous happenings that occurred in
2016 please give me a call or email me. I would love to hear what happened and I can probably use some reminders of all
that you remember. This is not squealing on someone it's helping me out. The Awards Dinner will be on Saturday,
February 4, 2017 and we will be going over all the fun things we did in 2016. I am looking forward to seeing all of you so
please look in this month‘s Fan for further details on the Awards Dinner.
November is also the month when we vote on our 2017 Board since we don't have a December meeting, and this
year I am happy to again announce that we did not need a nominating committee because the entire 2016 Board will be
your 2017 Board. Thank you again to the entire Board. We will still have an election at the November meeting to make it
all official.
I would also like to thank two special people who lead us every year in two very special events. Jill Schwab is
again leading the "Senior Bag Stuffing Event" on Thursday, December 8 and Don Reisinger is again leading us in
the "Toys For Tots Fly-by" on Saturday, December 10. Please look in the Fan or contact Jill and Don for details on these
two great events. These types of events are what make SCVT SO SPECIAL.
That's about it for now. See you at the November 18th meeting and Happy Thanksgiving to all of you. There is
still time for some great California weather so Let's Keep Driving.

December 8, 2016 – 10:00 A.M. 3 Plaza View Lane, Foster City
This is a community room at a big apartment complex right next
to Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, and across from Carl’s Jr. at the last turn off to Foster City before you cross the bridge on 92. Plenty of parking across the street in a vacant lot (waiting for construction). I have not had confirmation from the agencies and will keep everyone posted as I hear from them. See you all in November.
Thanks for all your help!!! — Jill Schwab

Secretary
Since the parade will occur prior to the November meeting (November 18th don't forget), I need to get your go/no go from you so I can set up the details for the parade organizers.
The parade route will be the same.
However, the staging areas are being changed due to a conflict with an event at SAP Center. We will most likely stage on the east side of Highway 87. In the past, staging has been on Santa Clara Street in front of the center and in the parking lots on the west side.
Details will follow for those who are supporting the parade.
Lunch, if you wish, at Peggy Sue's. Traditionally, there have been a number of restaurants that offer veterans a free meal if you can provide proof of your service. That is another option.
There is also a post parade event at Santana Row as there was last year.
The flyer for the parade follows.
So email me at [email protected] or call me at 650-722-3194 to let me know if you will participate.

As a very young girl in the 1960's the dream was to own a classic car. The
problem was, which one? There were so many that I found attractive, that
took my breath away. But as I grew older, 10, 12 and up, a list of preferred
models began to emerge and I began to write "the list" of cars I'd like to
own. That little Ford Thunderbird sure was cute and affordable for that
stage in my life so it made it to the top of the list. In my early 20's I began
the search.
On the first date with the man that would become my husband, at the San Mateo antique show, there it was! A 1955 Ford
Thunderbird. I exclaimed, "There it is!" Marty said, "There what is?" I told him the story of how I had been looking for
a T-bird for a few years. Yes, he was surprised to say the least. It had been born on March 5, 1955, it had a new Torch
Red paint job and the interior had been re-done. I also learned the car had been mechanically restored. I was able to speak
with the owner, took the car for a drive, took it to a mechanic for a thorough inspection (not just any mechanic, Marty's
son), and negotiated a price. The day before Thanksgiving, November 26, 1986, 30 years ago, I drove my dream home.
Yay!
Now known as TWTE BRD, "he" brings a smile to my face to just see him* sitting in the garage with his blankie on. But
the biggest grin appears while I drive him.
As a lover of classic cars, I look at them as pieces of art and would like to make it my mission in life to beautify the
highways of America by driving only classic cars.
Some people hang Picasso's and Rembrandt's on their walls, I like to display my idea of art in a garage (would prefer a
huge warehouse but alas that isn't to be). But I was beyond thrilled when nine years ago we were able to give TWTE
BRD a brother, Norman the Nomad.
As much as I love my two classic cars, the greatest joy we've had of owning them is to have been introduced to the Santa
Clara Valley Thunderbird Club (by Joanne Nakanishi and Daryl Morford). We are so appreciative of the many
friendships we have made, the events and activities we have enjoyed and we thank everyone for making SCVT such a
wonderful club and look forward to many more years of fun, fun, fun.
* All my cars are male because they don't always behave as well as they should.

We are planning a tour to the John Muir and Port Chicago National Park sites in Martinez for 2017.
The date will depend on availability and schedule. It might be on a Thursday or Friday if Saturday is unavailable. Details will be forthcoming. At an "interest" hand-raise survey at the October Club meeting, the response was so large that a lottery might have to be held for the limited slots.
- A Ranger Rick Production
John Muir, the conservationist lived in this home. A ranger led tour will describe the restored house and show us his "scribble den" where he wrote articles and books on nature.
In 1944, an explosion, the equivalent of 2,000 tons of TNT, killed 320 men loading ammunition. Most were black. The Navy called their refusal to continue that work "mutiny" and led to a court marshal and prison sentences for many.

Her husband was a manager at the Ford Dearborn plant where T-birds were built. He received a new T-bird every year from the first year up through the ‘60’s.
SUNRISE ASSISTED LIVING DISPLAYS
On October 22nd
, SCVT‘s first display at Sunrise Assisted Living in San Mateo consisted of seven Classic Tbirds (one 1955,
four 1956‘s and two 1957‘s). Parking was somewhat restricted but we got all of the Tbirds parked allowing wheel chairs and
strollers to navigate without problems. As the enthusiastic residents viewed our cars I saw large smiles on happy faces,
especially the ones that took the opportunity to sit in our cars. Following the
display we enjoyed a nice lunch, soup or salad and choice of a hamburger or a
Rueben sandwich, ending it all with cookies and ice cream.
On October 29th
, SCVT‘s first display at Sunrise Assisted Living in Sunnyvale
consisted of fifteen Classic Tbirds (three 1955‘s, six 1956‘s and six 1957‘s). As
with the Belmont and San Mateo Sunrise displays it was rewarding to see the
residents moving among the cars and enjoying our Classic TBirds. The weather
cooperated by providing a few hours of sunshine, a welcome break in the series
of rain we saw earlier in the week with more to come. Following the display we
enjoyed a nice lunch consisting of hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad, all the
trimmings and, of course, beverages.

This tech tip appeared in the Oct. `15 edition of the Valley Classic Thunderbird Club newsletter.
Tech Corner
[Ed. — At a club meeting some time ago, the subject
of loosening a stuck steering column adjustment collar
came up. I recall Bill Mann suggested that it
sometimes comes down to wrapping the collar with an
thick towel to protect the collar‘s finish and turn the
collar carefully with a large pipe wrench. Better check
with him first before attempting this idea if you don‘t
know which way to turn it.]

A bit of history you may not have known
Hours after Pearl Harbor was bombed on Sunday,
December 7, 1941, the Secret Service found themselves in
a bind. President Franklin D. Roosevelt was to give his
'Day of Infamy' speech to Congress on Monday, and
although the trip from the White House to Capitol Hill
was short, agents weren't sure how to transport him safely.
Al Capone's 1928 Cadillac V-8 "Al Capone" Town Sedan became the President's Limo in December 1941.
At the time, Federal Law prohibited buying any cars
that cost more than $750, so they would have to get
clearance from Congress to do that, and nobody had
time for that. One of the Secret Service members,
however, discovered that the US Treasury had seized
the bulletproof car that mobster Al Capone owned
when he was sent to jail in 1931. They cleaned it,
made sure it was running perfectly and had it ready for
the President the next day.
Mechanics are said to have cleaned and checked each feature of
the Caddy well into the night of December 7th
to make sure that it
would run properly the next day for the Commander in Chief. And
run properly it did. It had been painted black and green to look
identical to Chicago's police cars at the time.
To top it off, the
gangster's 1928 Cadillac
Town Sedan had 3,000
pounds of armor and inch-thick bulletproof windows. It also had a
specially installed siren and flashing lights hidden behind the grille,
along with a police scanner radio.
Pictured at right during his ―salad days,‖
the previous owner would have been
pleased to know his car sold at auction in
2012 for $341,000.
