WELCOME from the fEstivaL teamThis is the 45th Auckland Folk Festival and we’re very pleased that you’ve been able to join us for another weekend of music, dance and fun. The festival has a great line-up this year and there truly will be something for everyone. Our main artists come from widely different musical backgrounds but are all wonderful entertainers and will hold you spellbound as they tell their stories through music and song. Our dance programme is eclectic and this year features a Taiwanese and French dance troupes, ad hoc performances in the village and a maypole, among much else!

The Festival will Get the Show on the Road with a stellar line-up on Friday evening while you wind down from the week and get into the groove for the weekend. We have a wide range of food available and the festival market will be open for you to try musical instruments and indulge in a bit of retail therapy.

The ever-popular Come-all-ye’s and blackboard concerts will be vibrant as ever so if you want to play, find the organisers and put your name down! A special event this year is a Phil Garland tribute concert, featuring some of New Zealand’s favourite singer/ songwriters and hosted by the inimitable Chris Priestley and Roger Giles.

We had a record attendance in 2017 and the festival is evolving, with your support. We’ve added more colour and better facilities and believe that we’re building a great festival. You will notice some changes to the site which we hope will improve everyone’s experience at the festival. We are extremely grateful for the support of a Foundation North grant for the 2018 event. The committee are all on-site over the weekend and are keen to make this a great one for all of you. Your feedback is important so please feel free to tell us what you think.

AND TO MAKE FESTIVAL LIFE MORE PLEASANT FOR ALL:Auckland Folk Festival is committed to recycling. We therefore ask for your support by using the separate waste bins provided, and take non-recyclable materials with you when you leave the site.• Black rubbish bags are available at the gate upon request for locals to carry non-

recyclable items home for disposal.

• We have not hired the whole showgrounds so please keep within the boundaries shown on the site map.

• Please wear your wristbands at all times to show you have paid for your ticket.

• For everyone’s comfort ALL VENUES ARE SMOKEFREE.

• In the main marquee please keep all chairs behind the rope boundary so “floor-dwellers” can get a good view.

• Do not leave blanket, chairs etc in marquees to “pre-book” your space. These may be moved at any time.

• Please ask permission before recording or videotaping any performer.

• Do not leave valuables unattended – especially in tents.

Open fires are not permitted anywhere on site; nor are pets as farm stock are grazing nearby. Please read and abide by the camping safety rules attached in this booklet.

Parents please make sure your children are aware of the above, especially the “Out of bounds” areas.

AT NO TIME ARE CHILDREN ALLOWED IN THE SHEDS. After the festival a survey will be emailed out for feedback, alternatively feedback may be sent to [email protected]

Thank you for your co-operation

The East PointeRs CANADAThere’s a reason, beyond their dazzling musicianship and wildly entertaining live shows, that The East Pointers have connected with audiences right across the globe, making new, original roots music the hippest, most vibrant thing going. Fiddler/singer Tim Chaisson, banjoist Koady Chaisson and guitarist Jake Charron have spent the last two years touring Canada, the US, the UK, and Australia in support of their award winning album, Secret Victory. In 2016, they won ‘Touring Artist of the Year’ at the Music PEI Awards and ‘Ensemble of the Year’ at the Canadian Folk Music Awards. Their sophomore album, What We Leave Behind, produced by songwriter/producer Gordie Sampson, was released in September 2017. What We Leave Behind carves a new path for The East Pointers, as they continue to blur the lines between traditional and popular music and develop a devoted fanbase around the globe.SATURDAY 3:00pm, In Concert, Main MarqueeSATURDAY 11pm-Late, Late Night Concert, Village StageSUNDAY 8:00pm-Late, Showcase Concert, Main Marquee

Nadia Reid New zeAlandThrough cavernous lows, blissful highs and globe-trotting adventures, music has been by Nadia’s side the entire way. Whether in New Zealand’s familiar rugged beaches and mountains, brutally windy Wellington, her hometown harbour Port Chalmers or the untrodden territory of faceless hotel rooms or the jungle in Kuala Lumpur, every episode of loss, heartbreak, and disappointment glimmers throughout. Fresh from completing a U.S and European Tour and being named a finalist in the 2017 APRA Silver Scroll Awards, we are delighted to have Nadia at the Festival who is sure to bring a new wave of folk music into our midst. Lonely HeartsTring USANourished by deep roots in the expansive canon of traditional American music, The Lonely Heartstring Band embodies the modern American condition—an understanding and reverence for the past that informs a push into the future. This multi-talented group of musicians is a classic Bluegrass quintet—always far greater than the sum of its parts.Combining soulful instrumental virtuosity with soaring three-part harmonies, their growing repertoire of original songs and composi-tions showcases not only their considerable talents, but a dedication to meaningful roots-conscious music. They’re particular kinds of songs, breaking through the genres and boundaries with strong and feminine punk elements alongside country and folk.SATURDAY 5:00pm, In Concert, Main MarqueeSUNDAY 8:00pm-Late, Showcase Concert, Main Marquee

ESTHER SWIFT United kingdOmLikened to Kate Bush, Eddie Reader and Joanna Newsom, Esther Swift is one of the UK’s most innovative and exciting contemporary harpists, playing music that pushes the boundaries and capabilities of her luscious and versatile instrument. Having travelled extensively around the world touring with her music, her composition, songwriting and performance is profound and daringly vulnerable, whilst drawing on her love of the Scottish tradition, jazz, blues and minimalism in her genre defying style.SATURDAY 1:00pm Harp Workshop, WorkshopSUNDAY 10:30am In Concert, Main MarqueeSUNDAY 8:00pm-Late, Showcase Concert, Main Marquee

HUW WILLIAMS New zeAlandHuw Williams began his career as a singer songwriter, one that attracted the likes of Fairport Convention to cover his songs. Huw and his dry, hilarious humour returns to the Auckland Folk Festival to bring some some well-crafted and finely-honed songs on his guitar as well as the chance to learn some clog dancing steps. Many songwriters could take a lesson from his brilliant chord progressions and his thoughtful and entertaining lyrics, but his magic touch just about seals it and cajoles the listening public to come back for more.SATURDAY 11:00am, In Concert, Main MarqueeSATURDAY 8:00pm-Late, Showcase Concert, Main MarqueeSUNDAY 10:00am Welsh Clog, Main Hall

Long time blues picker Neil Finlay and Tui award-winner Garry Trotman have teamed up with harmonica ace Craig Bracken and slide guitar wizard Glenn Ross Campbell to bring you blues songs from the 1920s to the 1960s that will soon have you smiling, swinging and swaying, singing along and dancing up a storm.SATURDAY 2:00pm, In Concert, The MillSUNDAY 1:00pm, Jam Band Workshop, WorkshopSUNDAY 8:00pm-Late, Showcase Concert, Main Marquee

KLEZMER REBS New ZealanDKlezmer Rebs are a seven-piece Wellington band formed in 2002 that plays (mostly) klezmer music, an engaging style of world/folk music born out of the Yiddish/Jewish culture of eastern Europe in the 1800s and 1900s. The Rebs’ music appeals to everyone. While many of their songs are sung in Yiddish, they also perform partisan songs from Italy, Russian folk tunes, French chansons, Latin cowboy love songs, Argentine Yiddish Tangos and 1940s swing vocal songs. Their own quirky, politically charged multi-lingual originals are some of the most popular crowd tunes. The Rebs are a performance band – full of story songs and interaction with the audience. The songs are portrayed dramatically as well as aurally.SUNDAY 6:00pm, In Concert, The MillSUNDAY 8:00pm-Late, Showcase Concert, Main Marquee

Their uncanny vocal blend and performances that are liberally laced with strong, emotional melodies and lyrics, they explore what resounds in the head, heart and soul of the folk roots movement.. Tony’s velvety vocals and finger-style guitar accompaniment guarantee beautiful layers of melody. A balladeer at heart, he has long been associated with folk clubs and festivals in London and New Zealand. Vic adds dynamic guitar, bodhran or dulcimer, and brings her spell-binding voice to their special brand of harmony. In 2014 she was gifted the Frank Winter Memorial Award for young talent at the Auckland Folk Festival, where her love of traditional music started.SUNDAY 4:30pm, In Concert, Village Stage

NEIL BILLINGTON New ZealanDNeil Billington has shown he is one of the leading exponents of the harmonica to come out of New Zealand, and combines a rare capacity for the traditional blues harmonica and the less typical chromatic harmonica. He is equally at home whether playing in the ‘Chicago-style’ of Little Walter, or the more sophisticated jazz sensibilities of the Belgian jazz great, Jean ‘Toots’ Thielemans. Neil has appeared with everyone from NZ jazz maestro Rodger Fox’s big band, through to jazz combos and electric blues bands, and folk and roots groups. Neil’s own band, The Neil Billington Band, is a regular favourite in NZ’s capital city, Wellington. Neil Billington has a remarkable versatility on a demanding instrument, showing at times a formidable virtuosity with a deep soulfulness that comes from playing the music he loves.SATURDAY 4:30pm, In Concert, Village StageSATURDAY 8:00pm-Late, Showcase Concert, Main MarqueeSUNDAY 4:00pm, Harmonica Workshop, Workshop

Ethno is a global movement for young musicians within the folk/traditional/world music scene and has been around since 1990. Now existing in over 13 countries with a solid international network, it is now time to bring it to New Zealand! Ethno will open young

musicians to a global network of passionate, open minded people who want to celebrate and share music and culture.

Ethno is a camp that brings musicians to live together for a week and share their music through workshops and work together as an ensemble, preparing for a final performance. Authentic traditional teaching techniques are emphasised through the peer to peer

democratic learning approach that is particular to Ethnos around the world.

The first Ethno New Zealand took place on Piritahi Marae on Waiheke Island from the 20th and 29th of January 2018, culminating in performances on the island and at the Auckland Folk Festival. Musicians attended from all over the world such as New Zealand,

Australia, Tonga, India, Sweden, Estonia, The Netherlands, Chile, Congo, USA and Ghana.

Ethno New Zealand will bring the world to New Zealand and take New Zealand to the world.

TINY TOWNTiny Town was designed and built by Coastella Music Festival directors Paul Brown & Gerry Paul (of T-Bone Trio) to give festival goers the thrill and intimacy of their very own private show. Gerry reminisced that some of the most memorable shows of his touring life were in tiny venues to very few people. The audience got to know the band, the band got to know the audience and everyone in the room went away with an unforgettable experience. The pair decided to bring that concept to life and converted a ten foot shipping container into a mini theatre fully kitted with a stage, lights, red velvet curtains, a black and white checked floor, a sound system and rounded off with vaudeville style exterior art work. Tiny Town has the capacity to take around five audience members seated and up to three musicians, exploring audience and musician proximity in a whole new way. Auckland Folk Festival is excited to have Tiny Town at our 2018 Festival. It will be opened at various times through the weekend and can be found alongside the Tower, a short distance from the Village and the Mill. Main guests and many other surprises will await you within but you’ll have to lineup and discover for yourself.

SECOND HAND NEWSSecond Hand News is a website dedicated to the Auckland Folk Music community, featuring a folk music gig guide, interviews with local and overseas musicians and album reviews.

These elements come together to create both a potent foot stomping rhythm and a captivating music and stage presence never experienced before. REB FOUNTAIN6 years in the making, Reb Fountain’s album Little Arrows is rich, full of songs about grappling with relationships, both personal and institutional. The album began in the music den of her Grandmother’s home in Vancouver. Full of musical instruments, trinkets and photographs,Reb found solace and reflection in this familial space. Little Arrows is a beautiful, creative collaboration between three gifted songwriters - the late Sam Prebble, Dylan Storey and Reb. Irrespective of the time it took to develop, Little Arrows seems to be fit for purpose right here, right now. Reb manages to transcend folk, punk Americana, and fill the well of the political with heart and soul.

CANDICE MILNERFrom the seemingly sleepy hollow that is the port town of Lyttelton, Candice, at 18, has released a stunning debut album Lyttelton Records, Evergreen. She has been songwriting and recording since the age of 14, her first single “Helping Hands” supporting CanTeen NZ. Since then, she has been performing all around New Zealand, impressing audiences of all ages.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSWe would like to express our heartfelt

appreciation of the people who present workshops and other sessions. The energy

and commitment they bring to their projects are truly awesome and their contributions to the festival add immeasurably to the overall excitement and enjoyment of the weekend.

We are also deeply indebted to the many volunteers who work so diligently to keep everything running smoothly. The festival

simply could not happen without the wonderful people who help set up and break down the

festival, man the gate, maintain and clean the site, look after our guests and patrol the

grounds. A great big thank you to all concerned.

Tips fOr Safe CampinG:We want your Folk Festival to be enjoyable and remembered for all the right reasons so here’s some handy tips, from the experiences of others, to reduce the main risks when camping, whether it’s in a tent, motor home or caravan.

PrevenTion oF Fire: Open fires are not allowed anywhere on the Kumeu Showgrounds. A fire can destroy a tent in 60 seconds and can spread rapidly to nearby tents etc. So, make sure you ALWAYS: Have a small fire extinguisher, bucket of water or sand handy; just in case check your LPG gas cylinder or canister and cooker connections for leaks before you use them; soapy water brushed around the connections will produce bubbles if there are leaks. DO NOT use the cylinder or cooker if there are leaks. Turn off the gas at the cylinder when you have finished cooking. Keep cooking stoves and barbecues about 1 metre away from tent or gazeebo walls. Watch the stove when you are cooking. Cook outside your tent in a well ventilated area-the carbon monoxide produced from LPG burners and charcoal BBQs can build up in poorly ventilated spaces and kill people inside the space. Use torches in a tents; never use candles or smoke cigarettes inside your tent. Know how to escape from your tent if there is a fire; if you only have one exit be prepared to cut your way out of the tent if necessary.

GeneraL safeTy:Wherever possible try and keep tents and caravans at least six metres (six adult paces) apart; this helps with easy movement around tents and helps reduce the risk of fire spreading. When pitching your tent, remember to look up to ensure there aren’t any split, loose, dead or overhanging tree limbs above. This is especially important if there has been recent high winds or if high winds are forecast. If in doubt find an area away from trees to pitch your tent.It can help you and others to avoid tripping over if you tie fluorescent streamers or LED lights to tent guys. REMEMBER Fire is the major hazard, do all you can to reduce the risk to yourself and others.
