Welcome to the first edition of the Ecton View of 2019 and as usual there is alot going on this month. I am personally looking forward to ‘swimming withmen’.. on 8th February at the village hall!We have a few new folks in the village most have dogs or just like walking so Ihave included a map of the footpaths we have criss-crossing the village. Please make sure you stay on the official paths and keep to the CountryCode. It will be only a few weeks before we have lambs back in the fields andwe don’t want any incidents.I can also tell you that a further 4 incidents of fly tipping have been reportedto Norse & the Borough Council. In all cases names & addresses were foundamongst the rubbish. So hopefully these people will be prosecuted and fined! We have had some more ‘Ecton Bag’ photos in, keep them coming, from nearand far.

Rector’s Letter February 2019

On 14th February we celebrate St Valentine’s Day, a day connected with loveand the joining together of couples. It is a day that is very special to Derickand me as it was the day, in 1986, when we got engaged and yes, he did godown on one knee.Little is known about St Valentine. Born in the third century he was a priestand possible a Bishop of Terni in Italy. He was martyred for his faith aroundthe year 269 at Rome by the Emperor Claudius. The connection of Valentine’s Day with love can be traced back to a PaganFestival of the 14th Century and in Medieval times it was the day whentraditionally, according to proverbial wisdom, the birds would choose theirmates “On St Valentine’s Day, all the birds of the air, in couples do join”.For Christians, St Valentine’s Day can also be a reminder that we have aloving God who created the world and loves us unconditionally, and the FirstSunday Praise and Worship Service this month will focus on God’s love. Heldat St. Nicholas Church, Great Doddington on Sunday 3rd February at 4pmthe service takes place in the coffee area of the church. The service is for about an hour and includes prayers; a Bible reading andshort reflection, with the opportunity for people to share their own thoughtsand something of their own Christian journey. Modern worship songs aresung, using a power point presentation. At the moment we are using recordedmusic, but if there is anyone who plays a guitar or keyboard and would like tojoin us and lead some of the songs, you would be most welcome. If you havenever been to the service before, why not give it a try?Amid all the uncertainty and changes we are experiencing in our country atthis time, it is good to be reminded that we have a God who loves us, a lovethat can be seen all around us, not least as the birds find their mates and thecold earth once again brings forth abundant new life.

Yours in Christ,Revd. Jackie Buck

R.O.C.K. Club FundraisingOver the Christmas period I ran a variety of activities to raise funds for theR.O.C.K. club, the social club for adults with acquired brain injuries in theNorthamptonshire area that I help to run. Many of you know of Headway, anorganisation that concentrates on occupational rehab and support for adultswith brain injuries, well we focus on social and leisure events for the samegroup of service users.

Much of that fundraising has been supported by residents and friends ofEcton village. The activities included selling wreaths and Christmas floristryand running workshops for the same, and the Ecton village Christmas quiz(which on its own raised £850 for the R.O.C.K. club and village churchcombined). Altogether, it amounted to £2,367.84, way more than I anticipatedand all thanks to local support. As well as covering all the catering coststhrough the year, we have been able to purchase a new sound system fordiscos, quizzes, bingo and the like. There is also sufficient to help towards thecosts of other entertainment for the club.

I would like to offer my profound thanks to all those that supported me, andeveryone that wished me well in my efforts. We had our Christmas dinner forthe beneficiaries of the club at the Marriott hotel on the 17th December and Iwas able to pass on the good news at that event.

I hope that everyone that supported the village events that went towards theR.O.C.K. club enjoyed themselves, I plan to run similar events for Christmas2019.

Thank you – Alistair McCarter

St Mary Magdalene fundraising initiative.Open House held on Friday 30th November 2018 at the Old Chapel,West Street, Ecton.

Thank you to everyone who contributed gifts for the Goody bags orgave me a financial contribution towards the purchase of refreshments.Lots of us enjoyed a really splendid time, people coming and goingthroughout the day, sitting round the fire in my little chapel, chattingwhile drinking lots of sherry and eating about 150 mince pies betweenus. It was a bit like the story told in all four Gospels of the Bible aboutthe feeding of the multitude, because when we had all enjoyed a veryhappy and sociable day I was able to have enough left over to give Kathyseveral Goody bags for her skittles evening at the Three Horses raisingmoney for the Prostate cancer charity, three dozen mince pies for theVillage Hall Coffee Morning and still had enough left to go down to StChristopher's Care Home with mince pies and sherry for theindependent living residents there on the Saturday before Christmas. We all enjoyed a very happy time and together we turned my £5 noteinto £494. A very big thank you to everyone!
