The focus of this month's newsletter is that we, the residents of Eden Isles, live in a great community
in which the positive attributes far out-weigh the negatives. With so many great things happening in our
community at this point in time, I'd like to take this opportunity to share some of the achievements our HOA
and other entities in our community have accomplished thus far this year.
Considering we are a waterfront community, Eden Isles is fortunate to have an extremely dedicated
team of very well-informed and astute residents working diligently towards the repeal or the delay of
implementation of the Biggert-Waters Flood Insurance Reform Act of 2012. Several of our residents are
exerting extreme efforts to increase awareness and activism around this issue with the goal of influencing
national, state, and local policy relative to the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) as well as
collaborating with many entities to exert pressure on the Corps of Engineers to take responsibility for our
increased storm surge risks and to take some corrective actions to mitigate this risk. More information is
forthcoming regarding what every household in our community can do to make our voices heard.
Since the beginning of 2013, crime in our subdivision has decreased. I am of the opinion that this is
at least partially due to our push to get to know our neighbors better through our social events such as last
month's luau and this month's upcoming Children's Day Out as well as via organized collaborative events
with law enforcement such as next month's Night Out Against Crime. Let's keep this positive trend going by
doing our best to become one of the most tight-knit communities on the North Shore!
Speaking of social activities, our annual Crawfish Boil and Luau were both great successes as will be
our next event the end of summer Children's Day Out which you can read more about in this edition of The
Eden Islander. Our hope is that these social events will continue to bring our neighborhood closer together
and that they will contribute to elevating our organization beyond the level of the typical HOA and ultimately
result in an HOA that has the feel of a neighborhood social club.
Stroll down any street in our community and one can clearly see that the effort and time spent on
code enforcement is paying off. Though there is still much to be accomplished, we can all take pride in the
improvements that are already evident. It is the responsibility of every homeowner to encourage adherence
to the codes of St. Tammany and the Eden Isles covenants. Enforcement of the Covenants and Codes of our
community is imperative if we are to maintain both the quality of life we enjoy and the value of our real-estate.
Our single largest financial obligation remains the maintenance of our common grounds. Even so,
this year our HOA has finally managed to allocate the budget necessary to give much needed attention to
the trees on Eden Isles Blvd. These trees essentially act as the front door into our neighborhood, and
unfortunately due to budgetary constraints they have been neglected for years. Taking the first steps
necessary to restore their beauty is a definite step in the right direction for the long-term beauty of our
community.
The success or failure of our community is going to be determined by us. When we pool our
collective talents, efforts, and creativity on behalf of our community, great things are possible. Please make
the decision to contribute to the perpetuation of "Waterfront Living at its Best" here in Eden Isles by
becoming active in and/or supporting the activities of our HOA.

EDEN ISLES HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION
GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING • JUNE 11, 2013
The meeting was called to order by Vice-President, Lou Sandoz at 7:10 p.m.
1. The membership said the Pledge of Allegiance.
2. Bob Beck, a Board Member in Oak Harbor, spoke regarding his
knowledge of events and changes in our area concerning flooding following Hurricane Isaac. More specifically,
two issues: The blocking of Highway 11; and Flooded I-10 exit. To summarize:
a. Blocking of Highway 11 the temporary solution is that the National Guard will put an engineering bridge over
the sandbags to allow residents on the South side of the levee to exit.
b. Flooded I-10 exit there will be 3 additional flap valve pumps placed (2 on Torres' side, 1 on our side) to keep
lake water out of that exit area.
c. B ob Beck commits to keeping Lee Longstreet, on behalf of Eden Isles, informed in the future.
3. Senator A.G. Crowe spoke concerning the recent Senate session and the rise of flood insurance rates.
a. David Vitter is well aware of the concerns in our area thanks to the team of representatives that we have
(Lee, Tom and John).
b. The MOSES underwater system used in Italy is being considered as a solution for our area in the long term.
c. Concerning flood insurance rates Senator Landrieu is working on a bill to block the increase of insurance rates.
d. The public is interested in the chain of events (what will happen when).
e. Senator Crowe advises residents to call/email authorities (with specific subject lines) to continue to press then
on helping our area.
4. Colin Minster reads the Minutes from the March General Membership meeting. A motion is made, seconded and
passed to accept the Minutes as written.
5. Ken Lanata gives the Treasurer's Report. A motion is made, seconded and passed to accept the Report.
6. Cindy F. advises the status of the street sign replacement/installation is back on course and will continue.
7. Security in the area has decreased. The police caught the guys that they believe were responsible for the vehicle
thefts/breakins in our area.
8. Denise B. advises that the EIHOA Luau will be August 10th at the NS Firehouse on Carr Drive. The cost is
$10/member.
9. Residents are concerned with having not received the Eden Islander. The Board advises that the member
responsible for the newsletter had a death in the family and the newsletter should be received soon.
10. Lou advises that the requests to the Architectural Committee have been few. There is currently one swimming
pool installation review underway.
11. The Architectural Committee is going to be more aggressive.
12. Board members met with Parish officials and collaboration between the Parish and EIHOA concerning code
enforcement and permit issuing will start. The Parish recommended that EIHOA be more aggressive in enforcing
the covenants.
13. The Board suggests to the membership that an attorney be retained and “put on record” on behalf of EIHOA to
handle issues in our neighborhood. The membership was in favor.
14. The Board will get pricing on a reader board for the entrances for notifying residents. In the meantime,
Neighborhood Alert signs will direct residents to the EIHOA website for urgent information.
15. The Board will consider installing “No jumping from bridge” signs.
16. The Commander of the Yacht Club gave information about the Yacht Club's sailing camp.
17. 50/50 was awarded. $55 to resident; $55 to EIHOA.
The meeting was adjourned.

FLOOD PROTECTION COMMITTEEAugust 2013 Update
The Eden Isles Homeowners Association Flood Protection Committee has been active over the
summer attending various meetings to:
· Reinstate the flood insurance grandfather clause
· Pursue storm surge protection for the Lake Pontchartrain Basin
· Mitigate damage caused by the Schneider Canal Levee
The committee's immediate and most pressing concern is the Bigger-Waters Act which
eliminates the flood insurance grandfather clause. The Eden Isles Homeowners Association has
joined with the Greater New Orleans Incorporated (GNO Inc.) coalition to reinstate the flood
insurance grandfather clause and keep flood insurance rates affordable. GNO Inc. has made
significant progress, but the fight is far from over and will continue to be an up hill battle.
In July, members of the Eden Isles Homeowners Association Flood Protection Committee spoke
before the Coastal Protection & Restoration Authority (CPRA) concerning the need for storm
surge structures at the Rigolets and Chef Menteur Pass. The CPRA agreed that structures to
keep surge out of the Lake Pontchartrain basin are needed and that they are trying very hard to
accomplish that objective. The Eden Isles Homeowners Association Flood Protection Committee
is constantly submitting letters and emails to various groups, politicians and the Corps
requesting action on surge control structures at the Rigolets and Chef Menteur Pass.
In August, members of the Eden Isles Homeowners Association Flood Protection Committee met
with Gina Campo, the new St. Tammany Parish Chief Operating Officer, concerning what can be
done to mitigate possible damage the Schneider Canal Levee will cause to our community.
Because of this project Eden Isles, parts of Oak Harbor, Clipper Estates, etc. are now technically
located outside of a flood protection district which in and of itself can affect insurance rates. Ms.
Campo said surge models are currently being developed and she will give us a status / progress
report in October addressing our concerns.
As always, we can do only so much. It is imperative that each and every resident keep these
issues alive by contacting local, state, and federal representatives and let them know how
important these issues are to you.
Research, reports, updates & corrections are continually posted on our website www.eihoa.org .
Look under “publications', “flood issues” and then “Eden Isles Flood Protection Committee”.

The Welcome Committee of the Eden Isles Homeowners Association needs your help. We are
having some difficulty ensuring that all new residents are properly welcomed into our community
and receive their welcome packs. This difficulty arises because the only way we have currently to
become aware of new residents is to obtain real estate sale addresses and when available names
from the Times-Picayune; unfortunately, they do not print every sale. In some cases, this can be
due to a new homeowner requesting the sale not be published. Additionally, for reasons unknown,
the Times-Picayune will sometimes not publish all the sales that are made available to them. So, if
you have a house near you that has just sold or into which someone has just moved, please reach
out to us and provide an address and if available the name and phone number of our new neighbor
so that we can properly welcome them into our community.
If you are a new resident (owner or renter), please contact me, June Collins by calling
985/646-0923 and I will see that you receive a welcome package containing valuable information
about your new community and the homeowners association that supports it. We strive to make all
of our residents feel welcome and well informed.Sincerely,
June Collins

Welcome Committee Needs Your Help
INSIDE THE ISLANDERThe focus of this month's Eden Islander is to reinforce the impact each of us can have if we will utilize our individual skills, talents, and resources collectively for the betterment of our community. This ideology is perfectly exemplified by the Eden Isles
Homeowners Association Flood Protection Committee. This is a "self-formed" committee of concerned residents of Eden Isles who have taken on the burden of advocating for flood protection and reasonable flood insurance rates on behalf of our entire community. These learned individuals have spent countless hours studying, researching, and basically becoming experts at understanding the complexities of storm surge and the impact the remedies put into place to protect the south shore are having on the north shore. In the not-too-distant future, they will be asking all of us to add our voices to their efforts and I'm hoping that by giving you this advanced notice, I can play a small role in preparing us all to be ready to help pull-through what they have initiated.
Next, I'd like to spotlight the Eden Isles Welcome Committee. It is made up of several resident volunteers who are not members of the HOA board but who are committed to ensuring residents new to our community are proactively provided with helpful and useful information regarding resources in our area. They also ensure that new residents personally meet at least one person in the neighborhood as soon after moving in as possible so they feel truly welcome. Why do this you ask? They would tell you that they do it, "Because it is simply the right thing to do."
Finally, this quarter's Eden Islander is packed with photos from social events that took place this summer as well as additional information regarding upcoming social events all planned by resident volunteers who are acting on their desire to live in a more connected, cohesive, and tightly knit community. It is often said here in southern Louisiana that Chalmette has historically been one of the most tightly knit communities Louisiana has ever seen. Being a transplant from St. Louis myself, I didn't witness this first-hand, but since Hurricane Katrina relocated many former residents of Chalmette to Eden Isles including our very own HOA president Raymond Frey, why not get a little of that reputation for ourselves? What if the end result of all that positive, cohesive, Chalmette energy moving here were to take root here in Eden Isles? I don't know about you, but I for one wouldn't mind being a part of the most tightly-knit community on the North Shore...how about you?!!
Let your little light shine in whatever way you can!
Best,
Sharon

Fall Yard of the MonthA Fall yard of the Month will be chosen in September. The
sign will go up around the 15th. Our Eden Isles Garden Club does not choose yards in the summer months because of hot weather. However this year we did see some lovely, welcoming front yards with colorful blooms and green grass, even in the hot vacation months! Thanks for keeping our sub-division beautiful.
We'll be cruising the streets soon!

Ever drive into our waterfront community expecting to find the serenity Eden Isles is famous for only to have that serenity obliterated by the presence of signs printed in BOLD RED LETTERING virtually screaming the phrase "NEIGHBORHOOD ALERT"? Ever wonder who put those signs there and why? In answer to your questions, those signs are placed by representatives of our Homeowners Association in response to situations impacting our neighborhood at large. Whenever events occur that our HOA board feels it is important to notify our residents about in the most timely way available, these signs are placed at our subdivision entrances.
Whenever you see these signs, the HOA board asks that you go to the www.eihoa.org website at your earliest convenience where you will find specific details regarding the most recent alert. Additionally, whenever possible, details of the alert will also be posted at our new Facebook page at www.facebook.com/EdenIslesHomeownersAssociation. Recent NEIGHBORHOOD ALERTS have been posted in regards to the rash of car burglaries of unlocked cars in our neighborhood and around Slidell. The most recent alert (the week of July 1st) was in regards to the presence and recent capture of multiple alligators in our waterways.
While our HOA continues to focus on its goals of building our membership rolls and accumulating contact information for every household within our community, this is the fastest means by which we can disseminate important information that is of a time-sensitive nature. So please help us to keep all of our neighbors better informed by passing information along to your neighbors who may not have seen the signs or checked the website. Also, if you have not already done so, please reach out to a member of our board (contact information included in every issue of The Islander) and provide them with your contact information (home/cell phone or email address) so that in the future we can develop a more direct means of getting important information out to the entire community in the most effective and timely way possible.

ALERTS
In the spirit of making this entire newsletter be all about our amazing community, the decision has been made to feature a photo submitted by a member of our community on the cover of each issue of The Eden Islander. This issue's cover photo depicts a beautiful sunset as the backdrop to the hot tub and boat dock of Thomas and Shiela Thompson! Photos like this one make the fact that printing this newsletter in color is not a feasible option financially a real tragedy! If a picture is worth a thousand words, color must be worth a million! No matter, as you can plainly see, in color or in black and white Eden Isles is in a word: BEAUTIFUL!!
What does your backyard, boat, dock, or backyard event say about living here in our island paradise? If you have a photo that will translate well in black and white and tell a story about life here in the isles, please submit it for consideration for a future cover of The Eden
Islander and who knows, maybe some of us will discover yet another reason to be so happy we live here! Submit photos electronically to Sharon at [email protected], but please include a meaningful message (including name and address) as anonymous links will not be opened for fear of computer viruses. Don't have the technology to send an electronic copy...no worries! Simply contact Sharon or another member of the board to arrange to have your hard-copy photo picked-up, scanned, and returned to you.

EIHOA Joins The Social Networking Generation! After several months of discussion and debate, the Eden Isles Homeowners' Association's Board of Directors
has decided to establish a Facebook page. The rationale behind starting this page is multi-fold:
1. To create a "social home" on the internet where members of our community can share and exchange pictures and other information of a social nature.
2. To utilize the power of social networking in an attempt to encourage a broader cross section of the residents in our subdivision to become active with our association.
3. To establish an alternative means of quickly disseminating information/alerts to the residents of our community, including the use of push notifications for those with the necessary technology who are willing to sign up to have notifications sent.
The decision to move forward with this initiative was not one that was taken lightly, and the final decision was made conditionally. Our Facebook page administrators will monitor ALL postings, comments, etc. prior to allowing them to be published until such time that the board is satisfied that it makes sense to allow unmonitored posting if that time comes at all. At any time, the board may decide to delete the page without prior notice if it becomes evident that the page is detrimental to the HOA's goals or the community's image.
If you are currently a Facebook enthusiast, the board asks that you stop by and "like" our page. It is our intent that as we become more versed in using Facebook, it will help us reach our goal of helping Eden Isles to become the most cohesive waterfront community the North Shore has ever known!

Comments:
A note about dues:
The parish does not maintain or fund the maintenance of the public spaces of our neighborhood, your homeowners association do es!
Monies collected are used for: cutting the grass in all of the public green spaces throughout the neighborhood, lighting, maintaining and providing
seasonally appropriate decorations for both main entrances, installation and maintaining street signs, managing the cost of repairs and utilities
associated with the security cameras, planting and maintaining the landscaping, managing the costs of neighborhood publications (ex. The Eden
Islander Newsletter/security alerts/posters), paying for postal service and postage, State fees reg arding the entity of the association, water testing
lab expenses, insurance and legal fees, quarterly meetings expenses, and basic funding for select neighborhood events.
NOTE: Board and committee members are non compensated neighborhood volunteers whose only interest is contributing to the well being of the
neighborhood.
Those who fail to pay dues hinder the HOAs ability to effectively maintain the neighborhood . The more homeowners that participate, the more
your association can accomplish. The current level of financial participation does not provide the HOA sufficient budget to cover the expense of
properly enforcing the covenants; this hurts us all ultimately via a detrimental impact on our individual and the neighborhoods collective property
values. Although the covenants are a legally binding part of each propertys deed, without sufficient funding the HOA can offer little assistance,
thereby the burden of enforcement becomes the duty of each individual homeowner. Your financial support and participation will allow your Eden
Isles Homeowners Association to better help you protect and enhance one of your single most important investments, your home!
