The Creation of Writers Block Workshop
By Connor Toseland
Everyone has a creative side right? At some point in
your life you have a shot at creating a short story or imagine some sort
of creative scene for a movie or book, it is true. For me the past three
years have been just that, I’ve tried to create scenes for stories, movies
and even a few games. But throughout that whole time there was al-
ways something missing; peers. People who had the same creative-
ness, those who wanted to make stories or scenes and put them on
paper for others to read.
Aside from family I know that it is difficult to find people who
appreciate the time and effort that has to be put into making
something out of the purest of fantasies, that is why I asked the
Student Services at Shuttleworth College if a group could be created
solely for those that want to let their creativeness grow with others that
have the same passion. Not everyone will be the same, which is a fact
of life. We all have different tastes, but we each have our own unique
opinion to give. And that is what Writers Block Workshop wants for
others to give.
With the debut of Writers Block Workshop it felt as though a small
amount of creative magic could be left with the college after I leave at
the end of this year. Being able to put something back into this
amazing place makes me realise that once you mind is set on
something, no matter what it is, that thing will always be within your
grasp.
It may have been raining but all enjoyed the cross college football tournament at Shuttleworth College! All teams played each other resulting in a Bedford v Kempston final, with the plumbers from Kempston being the overall winners. The day also saw a girls match played in the sports hall, disability and foundation students also participating in a football session, and also the chance to have a tour around animal care, including feeding the pigs! More pictures on the next page…..
Many thanks to Bedford Borough Council Sports Development Unit and Beds FA, who supported the event.
DISCOVERY : reliving films from the past by Han Quintrell
Discovery: Chaplin (15)
Long before he donned the titanium suit, Robert Downey Jr ran into quite a few
problems with the law – we all know about that. What less people know is that it was
during this time that he received his first Oscar nomination. Seriously; before everything
went a bit manic and the franchises started to devour him alive Robert Downey Jr was a
serious actor. So serious that, at just 27, he portrayed the most famous funny-man to
have ever lived.
This is one of those films that takes you on an extreme ride, packing the significant
moments of one man’s 88 years spent here into two hours and leaving you feeling as if
you’ve spent the entire time out your seat. You don’t have to have an interest in biopics
to enjoy Chaplin. You don’t have to give a single toss about old cinema. You don’t even
need to have seen an original Chaplin film. All you need is a vague awareness that he
was the guy with the ‘tash and the cane and a night of nothing to do. Trust me; I saw
Chaplin when I was eight years old and I’ve been obsessed with cinema ever since.
Still not convinced? Try this: towards the end of this film something remarkable takes
place. Chaplin, in his eighties, watches some old footage of himself in his heyday. Only,
he doesn’t – Downey’s performance was so good that instead of reshooting the famous
clips the director decided to just use the original footage. You could say it has to be seen
to be believed; only it’s very hard to notice.
Just sit back and allow your eyes to be opened to an incredible story which is largely
true (it is a movie, after all) and tremendously acted. You really won’t forget it; let’s over-
look all the rubbish people normally say and hope you take me truly when I tell you that
there’s really something here for everyone. It’s a 15 for a reason…
