Welcome to our July-August edition of “The Edge”. We are so happy to have been able to recently ease some of the necessary restrictions put in place during COVID-19. Our residents once again have access to their beloved Pinnacle Country Club and we can start planning to commence some of the activities they have been missing.

COVID-19 has given many of us some time to think about all the things that usually fill our day-to-day life and what things matter. For many of us, we’ve realised that in the scheme of things, some of those things just don’t matter. There are lots of positives that have come from lots of extra time spent at home. Some people have taken up new hobbies and done lots of home cooking. Some people have taken advantage of that extra time at home and cleaned out that cupboard or shed, or landscaped that scrappy bit of garden. People have learnt the value of getting to know a neighbour and how just a wave can make a big difference to someone who’s feeling lonely during isolation.

The Palm Lake Group has been resilient during this time with very little disruption to our staffing. Our residents have not been forgotten with delicious homemade soups and meals being delivered to their doors and early morning bus runs into the supermarkets. The Palm Lake Group has also provided masks and hand sanitiser to residents which has been warmly welcomed.

Our Sales Team have been busy with our first event post-COVID-19 in mid-June, where two small groups of VIP guests experienced a wonderful morning and afternoon tea in the Pinnacle Country Club and had the opportunity to see our new display homes in Stage 5.

COVID-19 did provide some changes to the Sales Team as Louise King was moved into the Construction Admin arm of Palm Lake Care. We wish Louise well in her future endeavours! We also have welcomed a new part-time member to the team - Hope Habben. Hope brings with her a wealth of experience both in over-50s sales and in the local real estate market. Please feel free to drop into the Sales Centre and say hi to her!

NEW HOSPITAL ON THE CARDS

Did you hear that Darling Downs Health will redevelop its Baillie Henderson Hospital campus, north of the Toowoomba CBD, to cater for an ever-increasing population across greater Toowoomba? The redeveloped hospital will be at the centre of a masterplanned health and knowledge precinct at the 75-hectare site, whichhas a history of providing health services since the late 1800s. The Darling Downs Health region is a large and diverse geographic area covering some 90,000 square kilometres. Darling Downs Health provides public hospital and healthcare services to nearly 300,000 people across 29 facilities and plays a local role in learning, research and innovation providing various clinical placements. Check out the proposed plans online and have your say. Visit www.health.qld.gov.au/darlingdowns and click the “Our Projects” link.

While it’s the smallest of our three-bedroom designs here at Palm Lake Resort Toowoomba, our architects and design team have utilised the Palm Lake Group’s more than 40 years of experience in building community lifestyle resorts and packed our Majella home full of features. As you enter Majella, Bedrooms 2 and 3 can be found at the front of the home and share an opulent bathroom. As you walk down the entry hallway and pass the laundry/garage access, another key selling point for Majella is that it boasts loads of storage. There are cupboards galore for linen and cleaning equipment, as well as under-bench and overhead cupboards in the laundry and all these storage cupboards in the garage. The epoxy floors in the garage come standard, as do the 10 solar panels on the roof, fully ducted air conditioning, our clever Odyssey ventilation system, a 3000-litre water tank, screens all round and a security screen to the front door. Moving into the living room, high ceilings draw the eye up and make this area feel very spacious. The kitchen, with its over-sized island bench, sets the scene for those who enjoy baking or cooking for friends and family. And don’t forget the convenient study nook located nearby the kitchen, helping keep you on top of your home administration. From the kitchen, you are lead out to the alfresco area, which is fully under roof with ceiling fan, gas bayonet for your barbecue and external power points. Forget the mower - Majella offers very low maintenance living, giving you more time to concentrate on those things you enjoy most in life!Lastly, at the back of the home is the master bedroom. Cleverly located away from the other rooms to offer its inhabitants privacy, this suite has a functional walk-in robe and a spacious ensuite. This bedroom will also accommodate a queen- or king- bedroom suite and is a sanctuary at day’s end. There’s little doubt why Majella is so popular with Palm Lake Resort Toowoomba homeowners. Inspect it today. This is your time.

WE RAISE A TOAST TO OUR MAJELLA DISPLAY HOME, WHICH WAS NAMED AFTER THE MAJELLA WINERY IN COONAWARRA, SOUTH AUSTRALIA, AND HAS PROVEN TO BE OUR BEST-SELLING DESIGN TO DATE.

DOWNSIZING YOUR FAMILY HOME DOESN’T MEAN GIVING UP ON A BACKYARD THAT IS THE ENVY OF YOUR VISITORS. WHETHER YOU’RE PLANNING TO ENTERTAIN FAMILY AND FRIENDS OUT THERE OR JUST WANT TO CREATE AN OASIS FOR YOURSELF, THERE ARE SO MANY WAYS TO EASILY TAKE A COMPACT BACKYARD TO THE NEXT LEVEL.

Our newest Palm Lake Resort homes are filled to the brim with luxury fittings and finishes as well as clever design elements that make them such coveted and comfortable abodes. But even in our low-maintenance downsizers, don’t think you can’t extend their awesomeness beyond the internal walls – there’s a brilliant backyard just waiting for your creative touch! And if there’s one state of our country that offers a climate for backyard bliss, it’s Queensland. Here are some ways to capitalise on your Palm Lake Resort home’s backyard space and make it an area that you and your visitors enjoy spending time in:

GO GREEN It’s the obvious thing but a lush, green garden is ever so welcoming. Speak to your local nursery staff about what types of plants suit your home’s position (closely observe how the sun falls on your various garden beds before you head to the nursery) and also take into account how green your thumb actually is. Choose hardy plants if you’re a plant newbie, to avoid disappointment! A simple irrigation system is worth the expense when setting up your garden – many systems can be controlled via an app on your smartphone when you’re away on holidays. Layering your plants is also important – choose a few taller feature specimens, add mid-level lushness and then also consider groundcovers for full effect. Choosing a few key varieties and planting them enmasse can have greater impact than a random assortment of loads of different plants. When done, mulching your garden beds is equal parts function and form, finishing off the project neatly.

GAME ON You don’t need a huge backyard to have a huge amount of backyard fun – in fact, there is a whole range of yard-friendly games on the market. Classic Bocce can’t be beaten. All you need is a Bocce set and you’re on your way! Lawn bowls lovers will love Bocce as the objective is similar: get your team’s balls closer to the pallino (the first ball put into play) than the other team’s. Alternatively, you may want to invest in a Finska set. This game involves throwing a wooden block at a cluster of 12 wooden

cylinders, which are marked with the numbers one to 12. Your score is based on the total of the numbers on the cylinders you knock over. The first to exactly 50 points wins, but if ‘accidentally’ you score above 50, your score drops back to 25 and you start accumulating points again. You can even seek out jumbo backyard versions of those classic indoor family games like Jenga, chess and Yahtzee.

GROW YOUR OWN A small vegetable patch can reap big rewards, especially when it comes to the pride felt when eating your own homegrown produce. Even the smallest of garden beds can be utilised for a veggie patch or you could group together a few larger decorator pots filled with premium potting mix. Lettuce is an easy veg to grow that is also quick to reach harvest. There are also many dwarf tomato varieties that grow to roughly 50cm, which is prefect for a small veggie patch. Shallots, French beans and spinach are compact growers. Beetroot and onions don’t take up too much space and are fun for the kids to dig up when mature. Snow peas will only need a small climbing frame from Bunnings to produce glorious results. Preparing your ground is key – use rich composted soil. Water and fertilise regularly for fast results. This is one project that’s perfect to share with the grandies – for the educational aspects as well as the bonding. And it’s always good to work with your likeminded neighbours to ensure a wide variety of produce is grown which can then be shared around.

WRIGGLING WONDERS If you’ve committed to a veggie patch, another cool addition to a small backyard is a worm farm. For around

6 7

$150, you can set yourself up with a neat and compact worm farm and all the things you’ll need to support your new little wriggly pets. Worms will compost your kitchen scraps while also producing worm ‘tea’ fertiliser and the richest composted soil for your plants. When a worm farm is working efficiently, there’s no smell. And they will sit unobtrusively in a shady spot in your yard. It’s another one of those backyard beauties that the grandkids will LOVE! And, trust us, your neighbours will want some of your magic worm tea for their gardens too – bottle it up and share it around!

MOVIE MAGIC Recreating the magic of the cinema in your own backyard on a balmy night is as easy as one, two three (and this is a sure-fire way to impress the visiting grandkids!). One: Purchase an inexpensive portable projector. Two: Set up a large white sheet or find a suitable light-coloured external wall. And, three: Add some comfy seating. Your ‘screen’ can be as simple as pegging up a white sheet against a fence or you can go next level and invest in a fancy projector screen that can stand on its own. You’ve probably got outdoor furniture to shuffle around and utilise, or you can source some outdoor beanbags for the kids. Throw on some snuggly blankets and cushions, and don’t forget the popcorn and choc tops (for extra movie magic), then sit back, relax and enjoy a private screening of your family’s favourite flicks.

GARDEN ART Another way to bring wow factor to your backyard is via garden art. There are endless options but have you considered:• Decorative screens/panels (widely available at

hardware stores) which look great installed against a

plain fence or among plants• Statues and sculptural figures, subtly installed among

the greenery for a surprise ‘pop’ of interest• Water features - the sound of gentle running water is

soothing and relaxing• Paint a feature wall – they aren’t just for inside!

TAKE A SEAT A commonly overlooked element of backyards is seating. Create places to stop and take in the vista you’ve created. The more unexpected, the better. Maybe you can install a bench near your veggie patch that doubles as storage for a few small garden tools? Or position a couple of chairs and a small table to overlook the water feature? Sitting among the plants in your backyard, with the sun on your back, is proven to be amazing therapy.

FIRED UP Some Australians head indoors when the cool weather sets in but you can (and should!) enjoy your outdoor area all year ‘round with the help of a backyard fire pit or brazier. They are readily available from hardware stores, come in many designer styles and are priced from as low as around $80. Find a spot to set up your fire pit with no overhanging branches, fences or other flammable structures in close range. From campfire cinnamon roll-ups to baked potatoes and the simple classic toasted marshmallows - the possibilities are deliciously endless when it comes to cooking things with your firepit. Invite your neighbours around or enjoy the crackling flames in solitude with nothing more than a good red to keep you company. Responsible fire pit owners know that they can only be used when there are no local fire bans. Be sure to check for the latest council updates in your area before firing up.

BIG PLANS ̈̈

WHEN THE HOUSEWIVES OF PALM LAKE RESORT TOOWOOMBA ARE MISSING THEIR HUSBANDS, THEY KNOW EXACTLY WHERE TO START LOOKING FOR THEM – BUT DON’T THINK THE RESORT WORKSHOP IS JUST FOR THE BOYS…

Palm Lake Resort Toowoomba’s Activity Centre, which incorporates the popular resort workshop, is the place to see sparks fly – and we aren’t just talking about the conversations between married couples when husbands go missing for hours on end! Jokes aside, the Pinnacle Residents’ Workshop is a magnet for all those homeowners – males and females - who like to get creative with their hands. As an example, in the past week, the workshop has seen homeowners making creations for their gardens, doing various home maintenance jobs and there’s even a homeowner who utilises the workshop to make titanium jewellery. Workshop coordinator Bill Jacklin says the resort facility recently saw a welcome upgrade, with walls constructed around the welding bay to cordon it off from the rest of the space, in an effort to reduce noise and fumes for fellow workshop users. A motor mechanic by trade who spent the most recent portion of his career as a manual arts teacher, Bill says the workshop is a safe, welcoming space for all.

“Residents have to go through an induction process to be able to use the equipment,” Bill explains. “We also have a buddy system where any experienced members are happy to be called on to assist new workshop users.”

Bill is quick to admit that although the space sees a lot of practical action, it’s also a wonderful meeting place that acts as a social magnet for likeminded residents. The jug is usually on all day as homeowners gather to chat and compare notes.

Bill himself says he’s there at the workshop every day and treats it as his “home away from home”. “I’ve basically got a bed there!” he jokes.

As an extension of residents’ own home garage workshops, this facility offers a range of equipment. You’ll find everything from a modern SawStop table saw and a mig/stick welder, to cut-off wheels and 4” angle grinders, to a wide selection of woodworking and metalworking hand and power tools. You’ll remember the resort’s impressive award-winning float in the most recent Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers? It was constructed by a team of workshop members (and decorated with an amazing array of flowers grown by dedicated resort grounds staff). Bill says that it’s taken 18 months or so to set up the workshop, with Palm Lake Group supplying the bulk of the equipment and resident raffles etc supplementing the purchase of specialty bits and pieces. He encouraged any residents who hadn’t taken the time to wander through the facility to stop by. The jug will most definitely be on.

IT FEELS A WORLD AWAY FROM THE COAST SHE KNOWS AND LOVES, BUT ROSEMARIE BRYANT IS ENJOYING HER TREE-CHANGE AT PALM LAKE RESORT TOOWOOMBA, AND LIFE IN THE GARDEN CITY, MORE THAN SHE THOUGHT POSSIBLE.

THE ULTIMATE

TREE CHANGE ̈̈

Moving from six acres on the coast at beautiful Brunswick Heads to a home in an over-50s lifestyle community in the inland “Garden City” Toowoomba is what some might consider a ‘big move,’ but Rosemarie took it all in her stride. A self-declared coastal girl, Rosemarie had lived by the beach for most of her life and loved every moment of it. But after having her daughter and her daughter’s young family come down from Toowoomba, weekend after weekend, to help her manage her Brunswick Heads house and sprawling garden, Rosemarie decided that a Toowoomba tree-change was the logical next chapter in her story.

“My husband and I used to come up here often to visit our daughter and we would always attend the Carnival of Flowers, so Toowoomba already felt like a second home to me,” says Rosemarie. “I looked around at houses and didn’t fall in love with any, but as soon as I came to Palm Lake Resort Toowoomba, I just knew.”

From there, things moved quickly. Rosemarie sold her home at Brunswick Heads much faster than she had anticipated, but the Palm Lake Resort Toowoomba team helped her move into an existing home in the resort while she waited for hers to be completed. And since moving into her permanent home in February 2019, Rosemarie has wasted no time turning the space around her home into a flourishing garden.

“I wanted to be able to look out over beautiful flowers from my windows, so I had a landscaper come in and do up the space alongside my villa,” says Rosemarie. “Now, I’ve got a nice walkway that I can use to get around and I live out there quite a bit.”

Rosemarie and her late husband were in the motel business, so there was always a garden to tend to. “He would do all of the hard work, and I would tell him what to do,” Rosemarie jokes. And while her husband was fond of his veggie garden, Rosemarie prefers growing beautiful flowers, particularly roses – though she admits that she feels a little out of her depth in

this new, much cooler climate. Her top gardening tips? Ask plenty of questions at the local nurseries, and hope for the best.

“It’s so much cooler here than what I’m used to – we didn’t really have winter in Brunswick Heads,” says Rosemarie. “I’ve found that I only need to water my flowers a couple of times a week, whereas down on the coast you need to water every single day.”

For Rosemarie, time spent in the garden is meditative – she loves relaxing and drifting into her own world while she plants, digs and prunes. Along with the community, who have welcomed her with open arms, it’s being able to tend to her love of gardening that has helped Rosemarie settle into her new, albeit different, life at Palm Lake Resort Toowoomba.

“I have everything here,” says Rosemarie. “The facilities are beautiful and the security is a great comfort, which is what you need when you’re by yourself. Everybody is likeminded here, too – we all just want a peaceful, quiet life. If you want to go out and have drinks there is always a neighbour to do that with, and if you want to stay home and potter around your garden you can do that, too.”
