Success! Success! Success!

Our first co-conference with the International Kinesiology College was incredible. The theme, Oneness, set the tone and our two organizations were up to the challenge!

In particular, the mingling of others from related fields provided an enriched learning environment. Participants were able to compare and contrast the different modalities. The content was wide and varied, while the opportunities for personal and professional growth were expansive.

The opening circle included traditional Hungarian dancing and costuming. Each night offered a different celebration: a live band for dancing, drumming, and a horse farm. Participants from the conference were welcomed with opened arms by the local people and businesses of Kecskemét. Our conference sponsor, Zsuzsanna Koves, even organized a walking tour of the town that ended at city hall, including a meeting with the city’s mayor.

As new friendships were forged, and languages learned, interest in future co-conferences emerged...

The success of the event was inspirational and exciting possibilities for collaboration remain. In the meantime, mark your calendars for the 2012 Annual Conference in Colorado, USA.

Hope to see you there!Kari Coady, Executive Director

THE EDU-K UPDATE SEPTEMBER 2011

Think outside the box! Be creative! Build Brain Gym® combinations!

The annual conference in Hungary last month was filled with creative uses of Brain Gym! This month’s “tips and tools” is sharing a couple of innovative ways Brain Gym is being used around the world.

Consider incorporating Brain Gym into your workout routine, which was one of the conference breakout sessions. The number of parallels between The 26 and what is done in a gym will surprise you. And give your brain a workout by combining movements—could you hold Earth Buttons while squatting?

Martial Arts and Brain Gym was another movement-based workshop. The Cross Crawl is quite active within many martial art forms. Rhythm is important from within and when working with a partner!

And we danced…partner dances require the use of all Three Dimensions. Where am I in space? Where is my partner? Can we organize our movements and avoid running into others? Are we able to sidestep when necessary? How is our directionality?

There were workshops on awakening the senses and Brain Gym—organized games—echo songs, rhythmic activities, playful explorations.

The 26 are a starting point! Don’t allow them to be the ending point.

Take their intention and move forward into new territory knowing you can always return to the basics! Have fun!

The Essence of Movement

As I make my way through a long list of potential topics for this column, I find myself pulled in many directions! There’s so much to investigate, and a wealth of ideas to ponder. I decide to slow down, and drop deeply into the simple and vast subject of movement.

In the Edu-K world, movement is clearly our baseline for discussion and teaching—what more can I possibly contribute to the conversation?

Yet, it turns out there is a great deal to share, including the handful of perspectives listed below. They come from the worlds of art, science, music, dance, education, and philosophy.

This month I will quiet my own commentary and invite you to simply consider movement from a different angle. And I always look forward to hearing any about new connections you might make!

All creative activity begins with movement. (Joseph Zinker)

Music is the expression of the movement of the waters, the play of curves described by changing breezes. (Claude Debussy)

Movement not only speaks through an object, a living organism owes its final form to it; movement leads to growth and structure. (Rudolf Laban)

Learning is movement from moment to moment. (Jiddu Krishnamurti)

Awareness changes how we physically move. As we become more fluid and resilient so do the mental, emotional and spiritual movements of our lives. (Emilie Conrad)

Nothing happens until something moves. (Albert Einstein)

All that is important is this one moment in movement. Make the moment important, vital, and worth living. Do not let it slip away unnoticed and unused. (Martha Graham)

Ask Dave

Dave administers and answers questions posted to our website message board, “Ask Dave”. To visit or post a question click here.

Question:

Do Brain Gym exercises work for high muscle tone children also or it works only for low muscle tone children? Are they effective even for children of age above six as by then their brain would have matured?

Dave’s Answer:

Few researchers in the area would argue that the brain is completely mature by age six and there is growing research to support the idea of lifelong neuroplasticity. That said, I have seen clients, some older than six, with high muscle tone, especially "toe walking", achieve more appropriate tone. Sometimes this happens after only one Brain Gym® session, though it usually takes more than one session, especially to make the change permanent.

Brain Gym Story Cindy Goldade & Alanna Kennedy, MN

Frazzled from getting lost, she arrived full of apologies and thrust money at me stating she was not going to take up any more of my time. I suggested perhaps becoming disoriented was part of the balance and she was already in the Pre-Activity. Eyebrows went up and a nod came forth. We backed up to goal setting in order to move forward with the balance.

A couple of days later the following was in my inbox: "My dear, the result of the balance is one for your Brain Gym career book. After you and I met, I was able to finish the last Chapter...How do you write the last five pages of an eight year project?...I did not realize until my

"lost and disoriented" adventure to your office that I was in trouble and intimidated to cross the finish line. What will life be like now?...If I write again it will be because I want to. It will be from my heart and not for a grade. I think that is what really scared me. Thank you for your help and patience.”
