An Interview with the Architect:
Shane Plazibat
Both Plazibat and Azure share a fondness for the clean aesthetic, straight lines and open
spaces of mid-century architecture. The lead architect talks about how this style
has informed the design of Emerson.
Mid-Centurymeets
New Century
Q — When we think of the classic mid-century look, we think of the minimalist houses which lined golf courses in Palm Springs in the 1950s. How have you updated that style for Minnippi?
One of the things that interests me is creating architecture that deals with the climate we live in. So we’re taking that mid-century ethos, and adding ideas of tropical design and 208 architecture.
Q — This is a unique site. How has it informed the design?
The residences are surrounded by a landscape of bushland on the west and north, with the golf course on the east. On that side, there is just a low-lying fence, so it’s a boundary, but not a visual impairment. We wanted to blur the line between the golf course and our property, to add to the sense of space through the vistas.
Q — There is also a connection to the internal garden?
That’s right. Each residence has its own internal green courtyard which is surrounded by glass. This is an unexpected space, because it doesn’t reveal itself immediately when you enter. But its advantage is that it allows natural light to fi ll the living spaces from two sides.
Q — Coming back to the mid-century aesthetic, how has that style’s use of tones and textures inf luenced you?
One example would be the stone base around the exterior, which was used by many of the architects we admire from that period. It’s a material that has a timeless quality to it and still looks great today. Now a rigid interpretation of mid-century design can be quite austere, and we wanted to bring more warmth into our homes. So that’s why we have timber cladding on the outside, and timber fl oors running through the interiors. The lushness of the landscape also softens some of the mid-century design elements.
Q — So the architecture takes on its own identity?
Exactly. It’s more than a homage. Ultimately we’re creating living spaces with fl exibility for the people who will live here. It’s a family home I’d be happy to live in now, and which I know will still look great in another 50 years.

Function & Form
A natural sense of fl ow between the gardens, through the living, dining and kitchen areas, is a hallmark of mid-century design, updated here with very generous areas.
Large expanses of glass in the living room provide clear lines of sight to the private outdoor terrace and
green expanses of the golf course beyond.
