“We understand

what it takes to deliver training

that makes a positive impact”

A welcome from our Chief ExecutiveSince opening its doors in 1967, Humberside Engineering Training Association (HETA) have always taken enthusiastic and highly motivated young people and trained them to be engineers for a range of companies across the region as well as delivering training solutions designed to up skill and retrain professionals within the engineering industry.

Our expertise centres around an ability to understand the needs of a business and to be able to design and deliver a training solution to meet those needs. More than that, we understand what it takes to deliver training that makes a positive impact.

Our apprenticeship programme offers a comprehensive recruitment process in which our candidates demonstrate a high level of competency, dedication and passion for engineering.

Our service also gives you the opportunity to train your staff beyond the Apprenticeship standard into higher education and onto a degree programme, as well as industry recognised competency qualifications.

I hope that you find this guide useful in understanding what HETA can do for your business.

We look forward to working with you soon

Welding Competency Assessments......................................................................................

A Competency Assessment is a great way to identify your current employees’ capability of performing specific job roles and tasks as well as and verifying their skills and expertise. If you are looking to upskill your workforce, it is a beneficial tool to recognise the skills they need to be able to perform a task. If you are looking to recruit, competency assessments is another useful tool identify the right candidate’s skillset you are looking for.

A robust way of doing this is to have the assessments conducted by a 3rd party unbiased Assessor to ensure the most honest and accurate assessment.

HETA have a large bank of tasks, ranging from 30mins to half a day that can be set up an used as assessment tasks to test ability levels of any sort of Engineer in roles from Operator to High End Technical Maintenance Engineers in Oil and Gas or Manufacturing roles. These tests are all observed, recorded and reported on by our experienced team of Instructors that all have years of their experience as Engineers themselves to ensure an accurate assessment is made.

We are always happy to design something that will meet with requirements you are looking for. We are also able to run assessment days where we can accommodate several people at once.

NVQ’s.................................................................................

Looking to upskill your current workforce? Or do you have skilled staff that now require a qualification? HETA offers Level 2, Level 3 and Level 4 NVQs in engineering. This gives your current workforce an opportunity to formalise the skills and training they have received ‘in house’ by enrolling them on an NVQ.

It can be achieved with minimal loss or disruption to work as it is a work based learning (WBL) qualification. There is no requirement to visit a training centre in order to achieve it.

The people best suited to enrol on an NVQ will already be performing a maintenance/or other Engineering role and simply looking to gain certification around the existing skills they have. It is achievable in as little as 6 months but is not restricted by time so can be done at the pace and availability of the candidate.

The gain for any company is to prove base line competence of their engineering team and also for the candidate to feel a valued member of the organisation. NVQs are available in all Engineering roles from Office based CAD/Design/Technical Services to the more traditional Maintenance (Elec/Mech/Instrumentation) and Manufacturing (Fab, Weld, Machining) roles.

Tailored Courses.....................................................................................

When it comes to training, we know that “one size does not fit all” - many organisations have specific training needs which are not always relevant, appropriateor met by traditional scheduled courses, so we take a different approach.

Our Tailored courses are a cost-effective way to ensure your teams have the specific, focused training that’s required for your business, delivered where and when you need it.

Whether you want a tailored product, covering aspects of current coursed, or require something bespoke, that is as individual as your business needs we can help.

.....................................................................................

What is an Apprenticeship?

An Apprenticeship is a real job with training, enabling individuals to earn while they learn and gain a nationally recognised qualifications. Hiring an Apprentice helps businesses to grow their own talent by developing a motivated, skilled and qualified workforce.

How do Apprenticeships work?

Typically an Apprentice attends HETA for one year, with the final two years working and training in the workplace. Employers provide on-the-job training, while off-the job training is arranged by us. We liaise with you as an employer to tailor the training plan to your business needs and assess the Apprentice’s progress on the job.

Who can apply for an Apprenticeship?

Anyone in England can apply for an Apprenticeship if they are aged 16 or over, eligible to work in England, not engaged in full-time education and have reached the minimum entry requirements.Apprenticeships are designed by employers for employers, which means you can be sure they’ll meet your needs. Apprenticeships are not just for new staff – you can use them to develop your existing staff too. Funding is available depending on their age.

Introduction to Apprenticeships

24

How much does it cost to hire an Apprentice?

Employing an Apprentice can be highly cost effective for businesses. Hiring an Apprentice provides the opportunity to train enthusiastic staff. Depending on your levy status, the training charges for an apprentice can be drawn down from you DAS account or as a co investor with the Government.

Your business will be responsible for paying the salary of the Apprentice, including the year they spend at HETA. As of April 2019, the national minimum wage is £3.90 per hour for Apprentices aged 16-18. This is also the rate for Apprentices aged 19 and over for their first year as an Apprentice. After this first year they are required to be paid the national minimum wage rate for their age.

25

All UK employers who have a total employee pay bill above £3m a year will pay the Levy. This includes public and private sector, charities and educational providers such as academy groups and universities. The Levy rate was set at 0.5% of your pay bill in the November 2015 Comprehensive Spending Review.

Your ‘pay bill’ is your total employee earnings subject to Class 1 secondary NICs.

Employers get a £15,000 fixed annual allowance to offset against the Levy payment. Employers who operate multiple payrolls are able to claim one allowance for the Levy.

An example: if you have a £3m pay bill, you have a Levy bill of £15,000 (at 0.5% of employer pay bill). The allowance is offset against this so your Levy payment is £0.00.

How does the government collect the Levy?

Payments are collected monthly by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) through Pay as You Earn (PAYE), alongside tax and National Insurance.

What can the Levy be spent on?

Humber ATA - who are we?

Due to increased demand by our client group, HETA have set up Humber ATA. Humber Apprentice Training Agency is a wholly owned subsidiary of HETA and can act as the employer for any Apprentices that client companies wish to engage with but are unable to employ directly.

Hosting an Apprentice through the Humber ATA enables companies to engage HETA Apprentices by reducing employment risks or associated overhead costs. Humber ATA will act as the Apprentice’s employer and the Apprentice will be placed with their ‘host’ company, to enable them to gain their Apprenticeship qualification.

Humber ATA will promote and support the delivery of a high quality engineering Apprenticeship programme through HETA involving companies who wish to use the services of an ATA.

Humber ATA supports the delivery of the HETA Apprenticeship programme by offering a number of services including:

• Recruitment and selection of Apprentices via the HETA recruitment process

Apprenticeship Standards Apprenticeship frameworks and standards.

The main differences:

The Institute for Apprenticeships is working with employers to create and develop new Apprenticeship Standards, in the aim to raise the quality of Apprenticeships.

A Standard contains a list of the skills, knowledge and behaviours an Apprentice will need to have learned by the end of their Apprenticeship.

Standards are occupation-focused; they are not qualification-led. The learning happens throughout the Apprenticeship and the Apprentice is assessed at the end. They need to prove that they can carry out all aspects of their job. They develop transferable skills and gain credibility too.

By 2020 Apprenticeship Standards will have replaces all the old Apprenticeship frameworks.92%
