NIGHT - DANNY’S HOME

DANNY, A 22 year old university student sits in his

apartment in the dark illuminated by only the light of his

PC monitor playing World Of Warcraft

Danny is supported by his relatively wealthy father and has

no job, and never had a job in his life.

Danny’s father GEORGE a widower, he is a dentist and a

socialite, he calls his son in the middle of the night.

DANNY

Hello

A DEEP SMOOTH VOICE is heard on the other end.

GEORGE (V.O)

Hello Daniel, how are you?

Daniels eyes are fixated on the screen, he is holding the

phone between his ear and shoulder and is barely able to

hold it in place.

DANNY

Fine.

GEORGE (V.O)

Good, how is university?, how’s

everything?

DANNY

Ah!, you shit face!

Danny suddenly jolts because he is killed in-game, the phone

falls down on the floor, Daniel tries to retrieve the phone

which he does after a brief moment.

GEORGE (V.O)

Excuse me?!

DANNY

Oh sorry dad, im so sorry dad,

hello dad? can you hear me?

GEORGE (V.O)

Yes, yes Dan I can hear you.

DANNY

Sorry I’m playing a game, I keep

dying its so annoying.

GEORGE (V.O)

Oh, I see, don’t worry.

DANNY

So whats up dad?

Danny slowly walks to the refrigerator, opens the door and

grabs a cold canned drink

GEORGE (V.O)

Well I have something important to

talk to you about.

DANNY

Oh, what about?

Danny is back in his seat playing the game, holding the

phone between his ear and shoulder whilst opening the canned

drink

GEORGE (V.O)

Well you see I have arranged a

meeting about a job for you.

DANNY

Oh dad, what did you do that for?

Danny jolts again and places his drink on the table, he sits

straight back up and proceeds to hold the phone properly

with his hand

GEORGE (V.O)

(SIGH)

Well I’m sorry Dan but I am old, I

am not going to be around all the

time, who is then going to pay for

your rent?, your food? your

clothes?

DANNY

Oh, come on dad stop being to

dramatic.

GEORGE (V.O)

No Dan, this is the truth, and I

would hate to see you like this for

ever.

DANNY

I will eventually get a job dad,

don’t worry, I promise.

GEORGE (V.O)

No Dan, you have been saying that

every time I try to speak to you

about it, enough is enough, and im

afraid that I will have to cut you

off, you have one month, find a job

or risk the consequences.

DANNY

That’s a bit excessive don’t you

think?

GEORGE (V.O)

You might argue, but it is

absolutely necessary, you have been

flaunting money on ridiculous

things Dan, £600 on a new computer

monitor?

DANNY

But I could be more responsible,

I’ll return it, I promise, I’ll

make it disappear, like Amelia

Earhart.

GEORGE (V.O)

That’s not funny and that’s not the

point Daniel!, you need to move on

in life.

DANNY

Okay, okay that was cruel, so there

is no chance for negotiation?

GEORGE (V.O)

No.

DANNY

Not even a tiny bit?

GEORGE (V.O)

No Dan, now will go?

DANNY

Yes, yes, just promise me you won’t

speak to me about it again, will

you give me that at least?

GEORGE (V.O)

I will if you promise to go.

DANNY

I’ll see what I can do.

GEORGE (V.O)

I need an answer now Dan, this is

important.

DANNY

Okay, okay I was just messing

around. So what is the job anyway?

GEORGE (V.O)

I will send you the address, you

will know when you get there.

DANNY

Okay fair play, well I guess thank

you dad, I need to go now I need to

finish this game.

GEORGE (V.O)

You are absolutely welcome Dan, see

you soon.

DANNY

Bye.

GEORGE (V.O)

And Dan?

DANNY

Yes dad?

GEORGE (V.O)

Good luck.

Daniel gets a text message after a little while, it’s from

his father and contains the address for the meeting. Danny

is surprised beyond belief when reading the address, he

looks at it for an extended amount of time.

DANNY

Wow, how the hell did he manage

that?

DAY - UNIVERSITY CAFETERIA

A relatively full cafeteria in the big university complex

people are dining and conversing.

DISSOLVE TO:

DAY - UNIVERSITY CAFETERIA

Danny is standing in a queue to purchase his drink and

sandwich.

CAFETERIA CLERK

That will be £5.50.

DANNY

There you go, thanks.

CAFETERIA CLERK

Yeah, have a good day, next!

Danny continues to the table area and pulls out a chair and

proceeds to eat his meal.

CINDY, a class colleague is sitting in the table in front of

Danny’s table, he stands up and goes over to her table.

DANNY

Hey Cindy.

CINDY

Oh hey Dan, how are you.

DANNY

Good, good... hey let me ask you

something, would you ever agree to

get a meeting about a job just

because you knew the boss?

CINDY

Hmm, I don’t know, it depends,

I mean if it is a low paying job I

wouldn’t mind, but if it’s

something bigger then I would mind.

Cindy starts to look through her bag and takes a menthol gum

pack out, she proceeds to give Danny two gum cubes and takes

none for her self.

Danny takes the gum cubes and looks at them with a puzzled

expression on his face, he proceeds to eat then and

continues to talk to Cindy.

DANNY

Is that right? well lets say for

instance its a job at a globally

known studio.

CINDY

Are you kidding, yes of course, I

think people with the best

experience should be considered

first.

DANNY

Huh, I gotta say I agree with you a

hundred percent.... well this

settles it then, im not going to

the meeting.

CINDY

Oh my god, were you talking about

yourself?

DANNY

Nothing goes past you lassie, yes

of course I was talking about

myself!

CINDY

Well, what is the job anyway?

DANNY

It’s an internship.

CINDY

Well Dan, think of it this way, if

you think you can do the job well,

then what’s the problem? (BEAT) do

you think you can handle the job?

DANNY

What?, are you kidding? of course I

can.

CINDY

Then I don’t see a problem, if you

think you are qualified then its

fine I guess.

DANNY

Maybe you’re right, I have to go, I

have along day ahead of me.

CINDY

Good luck, say hello to Sean for me

if you see him.

DAY - UNIVERSITY LIBRARY

Danny leaves the Cafeteria and goes to the Library to kill

some time before he leaves for the job interview.

As he is browsing books he notices his good friend, SEAN.

Sean is Danny’s childhood friend, they rely on each other

and have always been close since they were little.

DANNY

Hey buddy what are you doing here?

SEAN

Oh hey Dan, nothing im just writing

some new material, im opening at

the comedy club tonight.

DANNY

Nice, Cindy says hey by the way.

SEAN

Cindy?

DANNY

Yeah, Cindy why? (CHUCKLES) oh

right haha, I just remembered .

SEAN

Hey at least I’m interested in

someone.

DANNY

Well I’d rather be alone, anyways

my father called me yesterday.

SEAN

Oh yeah? about what?

DANNY

He basically called and gave me an

ultimatum, either find a job or he

would not send any more money.

SEAN

Wow, he is asking way too much, and

by the way how is he expecting you

to find a job? I mean you’re

SEAN (cont’d)literally the laziest person I

know.

DANNY

Well thats the strange part

actually, he arranged a meeting

about a job.

SEAN

Oh yeah? where?

DANNY

Mayer Gold.

SEAN

Are you kidding me? how the hell

did he manage that?

DANNY

(CHUCKLES)

I don’t know, he must know some

very interesting people.

SEAN

He sure does (BEAT) so are you

going to take the job?

DANNY

I’m not sure, I just think its kind

of morally wrong you know, I mean

some poor fella could have lost his

spot because of me.

SEAN

Ahh screw him, this is a once in a

life opportunity, seize it!

DANNY

I don’t know.

SEAN

Well Dan, I’d hate to break it down

for you, but if you don’t go you’ll

end up homeless.

DANNY

Don’t you think I know that? that’s

why I am seriously considering this

job.

SEAN

I don’t see the problem, you’re

just making excuses.

DANNY

You know you’re being an ass right?

SEAN

Im just saying.

DANNY

Hey by the way does my breath

stink?

Danny suddenly inhales and breaths heavily directly on

Sean’s face.

SEAN

WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT?

DANNY

Nothing, I was just checking, I

think Cindy thinks my breath

stinks.

SEAN

Why?

DANNY

Well you see, we were talking, then

she suddenly whips out a pack of

menthol gum, gives me two and whips

the pack back in her bag again.

SEAN

Hmm, I don’t follow?

DANNY

She gave me two, and did not take

any for her self.

SEAN

So?

DANNY

Shes implying my breath stinks!

SEAN

That’s because it does, anyways I

really need to finish this.

DANNY

(SIGH)

Alright man, see you later.

Sean suddenly stands up and calls Dan from afar and shouts.

SEAN

(SHOUTING)

HEY DAN! REMEMBER THE MEETING! IF

YOU DON’T GO, I SURE WILL!

People in the library suddenly start to look at Sean

annoyed, a group of people at a nearby table make ’shh’

sounds.

AFTERNOON - METRO TRAIN/ STUDIO BUILDING

Danny leaves the university and proceeds to the Metro

Station to go to the job interview and arrives.

Danny enters the building and is approached by a woman

asking what he is looking for.

FEMALE RECEPTIONIST

Hey, who are you looking for?

DANNY

Oh, hey, im here for the meeting.

FEMALE RECEPTIONIST

What meeting sir?

DANNY

Well my father told me that there

would be a meeting about a job of

some sorts here today.

The female receptionist rolls her eyes and proceeds to talk

to Dan.

FEMALE RECEPTIONIST

Oh (BEAT) I see, follow me.

Danny noticing this looks at the receptionist eyes wide open

in disbelief.

They arrive at the building elevators and enter one of the

carts whilst elevator music is playing in the background.

DANNY

Elevator music huh?.

The female receptionist looks at Dan and smiles slightly in

repose.

DANNY

Have you ever wondered why they

have those? I mean whats the

purpose? do they think that it will

distract us from the fact that we

are suspended in a metal box

through a concrete tube and could

fall any minute?

The Female receptionist looks unamused, they finally arrive

at the 22nd floor where the go out and arrive to the waiting

room.

FEMALE RECEPTIONIST

Okay mister Maurer, wait here and

someone should come in a minute.

Daniel enters the Waiting room where two other men are

sitting and waiting.

Daniel is called in after a short while (before the two

other men) by a tuxedo wearing man.

MALE ASSISTANT

Mister Maurer, this way please.

DANNY

Alright.

Dan enters a room with four relatively old men well suited

and seated behind a huge table.

WILLIAM

Hello Daniel, take a seat.

DANNY

Alright.

WILLIAM

So (BEAT) you are Daniel, your

father tells me many things about

you.

DANNY

Innocent until proven guilty, am I

right boys?

Danny looks at the other men and winks.

WILLIAM

(CHUCKLES)

No no, nothing of the sort,

although he did mention something

strange to me some time ago, he

said that you have never had a job,

is this true?

DANNY

Oh, he told you? well then guilty

as charged.

WILLIAM

But how come? you are young, I

started this company when I was

your age, I worked weekend’s

holidays and even in the summer, so

when your father told me about you,

I was shocked and interested.

DANNY

Well there shouldn’t be any shock,

I mean a lot of young people don’t

have jobs these days.

WILLIAM

Really? do you know any?

Danny looks puzzled, he straightens himself up on his chair

DANNY

I, I cant think of any right now

but im sure there are many out

there, I mean we are not a rare

breed.

WILLIAM

Daniel, you may be right, but there

are not many of them, do you know

why?

DANNY

No.

WILLIAM

Because most of them realize that

they do not wish to be in their

30’s unemployed(BEAT) anyway I take

it you are interested in the job

now that you have shown up?

(CONTINUED)

Page 14: The End Justifies The Means - final draft (1) (1)

DANNY

Well considering I am getting

evicted by my own father I would

say I am very interested yes.

WILLIAM

Unorthodox, but it seems to work...

so the details of the job is easy,

bring us a short comedy sketch in

three days, if we, the board and I

find it funny then you will get the

internship, how does that sound?

DANNY

Well this is hardly Sofie’s choice,

so yes I would say this sounds

good. But I honestly thought I

already had the job, I didn’t know

I had to write anything to get it.

WILLIAM

Daniel, your father means a lot to

me - that’s why you’re here. When

he told me about you I did

everything I could, do not waste

this opportunity.

Danny leaves but stops just before leaving and turns around

facing William.

DANNY

William, how do you and my father

know each other?

WILLIAM

Just put it this way,I wouldn’t be

here if it wasn’t for your father,

he...

You know...

DANIEL

SEAN

The job Dan, the damn meeting how

did it go?

DANIEL

Oh that, yes it was alright.

SEAN

It was alright? thats all?

DANIEL

What do you want me to say? it was

great, fantastic.

SEAN

Come one Dan, be serious, how was

it?

DANIEL

Well, he basically told me to write

a comedy sketch and deliver it in a

few days.

SEAN

That’s fantastic, so did you write

anything yet?

DANIEL

No, I’m watching some Seinfeld,

I’ll do it later.

SEAN

Wait a minute, I have an idea, we

could write it together!, you and

me, imagine how good it would be.

the name on his screen, his fathers name is on the screen,

he picks up the phone and walks to the small kitchen area.

DANNY

Hey dad whats up?

GEORGE (V.O)

Hello Daniel, how are you?

DANNY

I’m good, whats up?

GEORGE (V.O)

Good, well I am calling to check on

the meeting you had today, did you

meet William?

DANNY

Yes I met with William.

GEORGE (V.O)

What did you talk about?

DANNY

Well, as you well know he offered

me an internship, I just have to

write a funny comedy sketch.

GEORGE (V.O)

Will you write it?

DANNY

Well I have been thinking about it,

and I just don’t know whether

writing is (BEAT) me, you know?

GEORGE (V.O)

Do you have any idea how hard it

was for me to get you this meeting?

DANNY

I know...

Danny is interrupted by his furious father.

GEORGE (V.O)

Stop saying you know, because that

is exactly what you don’t know, you

have not been honest with me, I am

trying my best to help you out and

you are pushing all my efforts

away, please tell me you are at

least going to try will you?

DANNY

Alright, but is this really fair?

is it fair that I should get this

opportunity because you know the

boss?

GEORGE (V.O)

Dan, normally I would say its not

fair, but in your case it is, in my

eyes it is fair, you have always

been indecisive, this is the only

option you have left me.

DANNY

I guess I know what you

are talking about dad, I’ll try,

don’t you worry, take care.

Danny hangs up the phone and carefully throws the phone on

the couch.

SEAN

So what are you going to do Danny?

DANNY

I need you to leave buddy, I need

to start writing.

SEAN

YES BABY THAT’S THE SPIRIT!

DANNY

Yeah, yeah, yeah get out I need

peace and quite.

SEAN

Alright man call me if you need any

help.

DANNY

Sure see ya.

Daniel picks up his laptop and places it on his work table

and starts to write.

MIDNIGHT - DANNY’S HOME

We cut to Daniel sitting on his chair fixating his eyes on

his screen, looking exhausted whilst all the lights are shut

off in his small apartment only the screen light is visible.

DANNY

It’s something.

Daniel saves his work and goes to sleep.

MORNING - DANIELS APARTMENT

Daniel is awoken by hard knocks on his door, he wakes up

slowly whilst the knocking is still persistent, he goes over

to open the door.

DANNY

Just a minute!

The knocking becomes more and more annoying and louder.

DANNY

Good lord who is it!?

SEAN (V.O)

Its me buddy open up!

Danny open’s up the door.

DANNY

Hey, what time is it?

SEAN

It’s 9 in the morning, why?

DANNY

Nothing I was just wondering why

someone would wake a person up this

early on a damn weekend.

Sean seems ecstatic and energetic.

SEAN

Daniel, I have something to ask

you, and please just listen okay?

DANNY

Sure just let me make some coffee

and wash up okay? will you give me

that at least?

behind the door of the bathroom.

SEAN

So the thing I was going to ask ya.

Danny washes his face and brushes his teeth and exits the

bathroom.

SEAN

I was thinking, could you ask the

guys at Mayer Gold if they could

take a look at my comedy material?

or maybe meet with me?

DANNY

(SARCASTICALLY)

Wow I cant believe you’re asking me

this.

SEAN

I know its too much to ask but I’m

desperate Dan.

DANNY

Look, I don’t think I can do that,

I already got this meeting just

because my father knows the guy, im

not going to ruin or take away

anymore chances.

SEAN

Come on Dan, please, it could

really increase my chances, you

don’t know how hard im working, I

need a break.

DANNY

I’m sorry Sean, I don’t think I can

do it.

SEAN

Okay, but just think about it at

least?

NIGHT - DANIELS APARTMENT

It is night time and Daniel is still playing PC, the plastic

cups are overflowing his table, food crumbs are all over the

table, the lights are off and the monitor screen light is

the only light in the apartment that is shining.

The door knocks.

DANNY

Just a minute!

The door knocks again more aggressively.

DANNY

Two seconds, im in the middle of

something important!

A voice from behind the door is hear, the voice is

recognizable.

SEAN

Dan for heavens sake open up!

DANNY

Alright alright, on my way!

Daniel leaves his PC involuntarily to open up the door

knocking over some of the plastic cups in the process.

DANNY

My god what a mess.

SEAN

What took you so long?

SEAN

I said have you been playing that

game all day?

DANNY

Yeah, I’m playing with this guy

from the Netherlands, hes

hilarious.

SEAN

So while I was working all day, you

sat down and enjoyed your time

playing that stupid game? wow you

really have it good buddy.

DANNY

Well its all coming to an end soon

anyways, so whats up, do you need

anything or are you just here to

chill?

Sean looks at Daniel with a puzzled look, not knowing what

to answer, he struggles to come up with an answer.

SEAN

Well, I came here to see if you

changed your mind.

DANNY

About what?

SEAN

The thing.

happened?

DANNY

Nothing, I thought about it and my

answer is no.

SEAN

Why are you doing this?

DANNY

Sean, I will not say this again, I

will not ask them, I just wont.

SEAN

Oh I see, you want the golden goose

for your self huh?

DANNY

Golden goose? don’t be silly.

SEAN

No, Dan you don’t know how it feels

to work hard and not have it pay

off, you’ve never worked on

anything before, you wouldn’t know,

you have always been a pampered

brat.

DANNY

What’s wrong with you? why cant you

just accept the fact that I will

not ask them?

SEAN

Because I cant Dan, I just cant,

you have no idea, no idea what so

No I do, I have a pretty good idea

actually, because imagine if it was

Danny decides to run after him to apologize.

DANNY

SEAN! WAIT!

Sean turns around and stops whilst Danny runs towards him.

SEAN

What do you want Dan?

DANNY

Listen, the truth is I just wanted

to justify what my father is doing

for me by denying you the same, I

don’t know what to do, I don’t know

what im doing.

SEAN

Listen Sean, if we can do the damn

job, then what is the problem? the

only way this could be wrong is if

we were both untalented and

unskilled, do you understand?

DANNY

I guess I do, it makes more sense

now to be honest.

SEAN

So what now? what does this mean?

DANNY

Well I guess im dropping your name.

SEAN

(SIGH)

Thank you.

DANNY

Anyway, do you want to come up with

me? we could watch some movies.

SEAN

Sure.

Danny and Sean head up to Danny’s apartment.

I was thinking about writing a new

sketch.

SEAN

Now? the meeting is tomorrow you’ll

never make it on time.

DANNY

I have the other sketch anyways, I
