The Endless Summer Farms Story Endless Summer Farms facility was originally built as a joint venture between the City of Silver Bay and the University of Minnesota – Duluth to demonstrate an environmentally sustainable and economically viable method of food production in a cold climate. Hydroponics is the technique of growing plants in water; aquaponics (the culture of fish). Both of these techniques combine in an efficient closed-loop food production system with a minimal discharge or exchange of water. The environmental benefits of this technique are that it uses 70% o 90% less water than conventional soil growing and that fertilizer runoff does not escape into our lakes, rivers, and aquifers. The facility was built to commercial standards with a cost of construction for this 9000 SF controlled environment agriculture facility in the $1,500,000 range. Approximately 3250 SF of the building can be used for growing fish and support facilities for the plant production. The remaining 5400 SF of the facility is greenhouse area.

Endless Summer Farms grows, processes & distributes fresh produce year-round, including chopped & shredded lettuce, head lettuce, spring mix, spinach, basil, tomatoes, and strawberries. Customers have included Zup's Food and Nacho Business in Silver Bay, Super One Foods in Two Harbors, Lemon Wolf Cafe and Cove Point Lodge in Beaver Bay. Potential new customers could include schools, veteran and group homes, additional grocery outlets such as Super One, Whole Foods, Aldi markets in Duluth, MN and Superior, Wisconsin, as well as supermarkets and restaurants in the Lutsen and Grand Marais, MN areas. These markets offer a major opportunity to meet the trend of consumers who want to purchase locally grown food. Consumers now want to know where their food comes from, want freshness, as well as want to support the local economy. The Silver Bay Business Park is one of very few parcels situated along Hwy 61 that is properly zoned for development and served by municipal water and sewer. The hydroponic/aquaponic facility was built to commercial standards and is housed in an approximately 9000 SF building. Four conjoined greenhouses occupy +/-6000 Sf of the complex. The plants are grown in ten large troughs in the greenhouse, each with +/-210 SF of surface area, for a total of 2100 SF of growing area.

There are no other hydroponic or aquaponic facilities in the immediate area of the Silver Bay facility! Endless Summer Farms offers the opportunity to feed the rising demand for produce grown in climate-controlled environments that doesn't need to spend days on the road from California or Mexico. Opportunity Zones provide tax incentives for private investment! The City of Silver Bay may also consider tax-increment financing (TIF) availability. Opportunity Zone “Investor Timeline” and “Program Deadlines” are found at the end of these details. Take advantage of this opportunity to supply needed fresh produce to northern Minnesota residents!
