Community Spirit Hendrika Green, Principal

Assemblies

Held FORTNIGHTLY On Even Weeks, Tuesday at 2:30pm Next Assembly Week 8: 14 June

It is with deep appreciation we thank our junior student, Logan ’s grandfather for his hard labour! His efforts were remarkable as he made and installed a grate over one of our drainage pits to assist in the prevention of loss of student’s hand balls and the excessive leaf matter entering the stormwater pits. With the heavy rains forecast over the weekend, it will sure get a true test! Thank you for your community spirit!

We give much thanks to Ruby, a junior student of our school, whose passion for the environment drove her to write letters to local shopping outlets, seeking support for the school environmental club. She was very successful, securing in excess of 40 packets of seed together with some fertiliser from our local Woolworths shop. Thanks Ruby, and thanks Woolworths. We look forward to seeing the benefits of the planting out of these seeds.

We congratulate Tye and Jake, who will be representing our school at the regional level for Cross Country. It is already a wonderful opportunity to work towards a personal best when competing at Zone level. We are proud of all of our students who continually strive to achieve, always aiming to improve themselves. For all members of our school, we promote that it is the personal competition which is most important—not whether they come first or last or anywhere in between. It is about improving yourself, and being the best that you can be— something you can be proud of - as after all, that is what you are in control of. We wish both our students all the best for their endeavours at Region and know they will be proud ambassadors for our school.

Come along to the school library and find out about our school reporting system, children’s goals and how you can best interpret what these are telling you about your child’s progress in school. All parents and carers are welcome .

With the new term the bank have released new rewards. The Mud Splat Handball and the Outback Pat Bag Tag are now available. In addition, the Wildlife Write Set from Term 1 can also be ordered. Collect 10 tokens to redeem an award.

A token is issued for each deposit made at school. Unfortunately tokens are not issued for deposits made at the bank. Additionally, the school banking system doesn’t allow bankers to pool their tokens with other bankers (but older siblings may be kind enough to order a reward for you).

As a reminder, please write your name, student number and deposit amount on your deposit slip.

If you forget your school banking on Thursday morning, just post your deposit book in the slot in the office before the line-up bell rings on Friday morning.

If you have question or concerns, please chat with Kelly Bilek, Cherylyn Hare (0404 405 201) or Michael Tarman, or pop a note in with your next deposit.

Don’t forget to bring in the loose change that you do not need to help our students get valuable resources for their classrooms.

Throughout the school year, teachers focus on developing skills to building positive relationships among peers— some children learn these through experience and others need to be taught these skills specifically in order to apply them. The focus of our teaching points will last for blocks of two weeks, and will be placed in the newsletter. For the first few weeks of school, however, we will be focussing on the development of friendships.

Parents, we ask that you too go through these skills with your children, and discuss the dos and don’ts. Perhaps you can

ask them if they have tried some of the strategies and what the result was. Children learn best when they are supported

from both school and home with a consistent message. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Citizenship can be defined as membership of a group. It allows certain privileges and also comes with obligations to follow the rules of the community or the groups. Citizenship also means the relationship between the person and the community to which

they belong—not just in following rules and procedures, but also in following the moral and social code.

Being a good citizen of Engadine Pubic School means more than basic rights and responsibilities, it involves quality of character,

behaviour and interactions with others in community. We want our students to be active, informed and responsible citizens .

A good citizen is one who :

Cares about the feelings and rights of others

Shows concern for the safety and well-being of others

Stays informed about issues and voices their opinion /votes

Conserves resources and follows the 3R’s (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle)

Uses their skills to make a better community

The benefits students may gain from being a good citizen include:

Self-confidence and resilience to deal with everyday occurrences—like a disagreement with another

Gives them voice in their school community

Enables them to make valuable contributions to the world in which they live

Prepares them for the ups and downs of being an adult in the working world.

Being a good citizen takes an effort which is valued by peers, staff and families alike.
