ENW 298 Introduction

This week’s English News Weekly podcast reports on an

unusual news story from England – where schoolboys have gone

to school wearing girl’s skirts. This was not because of a joke,

or a fancy dress day to raise money for charity. The 30+

schoolboys were protesting against the uniform rules of their

school. Why did they wear skirts? What happened to the boys

afterwards?

Last week a rather strange event happened at a school in Devon, a county in

South-west 1: _______ – teenage boys turned up at school wearing skirts. This

up at 08:45 to begin their school day wearing skirts. In response Amiee Mitchell

between 11 and 16, said, “ We recognise that the last few days have been exceptionally

hot and we are doing our best to enable our students to be as comfortable as possible.”

argument. Sort of. The Isca Academy backed down and said that boys could start

to wear shorts, but only from 2018 onwards. For the rest of the school year –

uncomfortable, the school rejected their request. One mother whose 14 year-old son attends the

school said, “He wanted to wear shorts, but was told if he did, he would be in trouble”. The head-teacher then

said jokingly that if the boys were so hot they could wear skirts as that was allowed under the school rules.”

4 So, the next day five boys did just that and turned up to school in skirts – borrowed from sisters or
