Listening / Reading | | Listening Make Way for the Cow Ambulance Service!

Three Words | Help Listen / Read the news story below and check your understanding. Choose the correct word from the three choices!

291 Make Way for the Cow Ambulance Service! 1

A new ambulance service has been 1: launched/started/ended in the state of Utter Pradesh in north-east India. These brand new ambulances will be equipped with up-to-date medical facilities and include the latest technology, on-board doctors and specially trained drivers. So far this does not seem to be a very 2: strange/good/unusual or interesting news story right? Well maybe not, because these ambulances are a little different as they are not designed for people, but for…3: cattle/animals/cows.

2

The new ambulance service will exclusively treat severely injured cows and is the latest idea to help improve the health and wellbeing of these animals, which are considered 4: holy/special/sacred by most Hindus, the largest religion in India. So far the ambulance service, which is funded by the NGO Gau Vansh Raksha Trust, has received around 200 calls. This means that the five ambulances operated by the trust have been attending approximately 5: 25/50/75 cows a day.

3

Why is the cow such a sacred animal in India? Well that is down to the Hindu faith in which the animal is depicted as a 6: paternal/maternal/idolised figure, who provides life sustaining milk and thus helps to take care of the people. It is considered respectful for a true Hindu to feed cows first before even eating their own breakfast.

4 However the new ambulance service has been criticised as unnecessary and argue that the money would be better spent on providing 7: free/better/wider medical care for some of the poorer citizens of Uttar Pradesh, a state with a population of 199 million people. Yet, even if that happens the protected status of the cow in India is set to continue. Only last month Gujarat State raised the criminal sentence for 8: stealing/slaughtering/eating cows to life imprisonment.

5 Cows are such an iconic and important figure in India that the current Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, won the 2014 General Election campaigning for a national 9: ban/law/prayer on cow slaughter. In April 2017, the Indian Government outlined a plan to provide a unique ID Number to each of the country’s 190 million cows. This is so as to prevent Indian cows from being smuggled across the border to 10: Nepal/China/Bangladesh, a largely Muslim nation, that does allow for the killing and eating of cows.
