Yogesh and Suchna Shah met through common friends and after courting for some- time, took the plunge. This was when Yogi (as he fondly called) was handling his fam- ily business and Suchna was a cabin attendant with an in- ternational airline. “I was  based in Mumb ai and Suchna was in Singapore. Apart from our love for each other, one more thing that we had in common was our love for travelling. We got married in 2001 and founded the Back- packer Co, which is an ex- tension of our passion for travelling. ‘Backpackers’ are FOR CAREERS IN THE FAST LANE PURSUING A BUSINESS  WITH A PARTNER HAS A DIFFERENT HIGH  AL TOGETHER, BUT WHEN THAT PERSON IS SOMEONE YOU LOVE,  AN EVEN GREATER LEVEL OF ENTHUSIASM PERSISTS.  VINNIE BH ADRA TALKS TO TWO SUCH COUPLES WHO HAVE QUIT THEIR RESPECTIVE CAREERS TO SET UP SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS VENTURES THE ENTREPRENEURIAL CUPID encourage d to see the local sights, taste the local cuisine, make use of the local trans- port; in short, experience the place as the locals do. Suchna moved to Mumbai from Sin- gapore, post marriage. Even  before we st arted this busi- ness, we always had friends who would approach us to design and plan their holi- days for them. So we thought, why not make it our business? And today, we are proud owners of this company,” Yogesh says.  THE ECONOMIC TI MES NE W DE LHI G TUESDAY G 27 APRIL 2010 Ask him about the risk they took by quitting their respective careers and start- ing their own business, he gives a pat reply, “It was the two of us; yes, there is a risk in a new venture and that too as niche as backpacker travel, but we had each other for support and confidence and we just went ahead with it and there was no looking  back.” “It is great to be working with my wife as my business partner; I do not have the is- sue of trust unlike when you’re working with another partner. I am the creative person in the team of us two and Suchna is the more practical one as she handles all the administrative and fi- nancial work. So basically she wears the pants in the  business. The cardinal rule that was set down before starting the business was that there will be no inter- mingling of roles; the person doesn’t interfere or try to overpower the other with suggestions and the one most important rule is that ‘never take work home’,” he says. He adds, “We give each other enough space too. We have our individual night-outs where she hangs out with her girl- friends and me with my guy buddies. Also, one of us is travelling for a chunk of the month. So all in all, we do not have an overdose of each oth- er too.” working with a designer. As destiny would have it, they met through common friends in 1999 and at that time, Shane also needed someone to paint his first collection. So they teamed up and as they say rest is history. They got married in 2001 and were still work- ing with separate entities. After they had their baby daughter, that’s when they realised they should go into  busines s togethe r rather than work for someone else; so in 2004, the Pea- cock label was launched. The designer duo, Shane and Falguni Peacock, is an apt example of couples who have turned entrepre- neurs, post marriage. Be- fore their marriage, both were working profession- als who never thought that they would start their busi- ness together one day. Shane was working as an exporter and Falguni was “It was our passion for our work and love for each other that we decided to start the label together. It made more sense as we were working in the same field but for different peo- ple. However, it is not as simple as starting your  busines s with yo ur partn er. Maybe, the implications are not as much, but it takes as much hard work as with anyone else. You have to shoulder your share of the responsibility PARTNERS IN GROWTH PARTNERS IN SUCCESS F or a growing number of couples, running a business together offers the best of both worlds: pursu- ing a professional dream with someone you love and respect, while also getting a chance to spend more time with them. Imagine your life partner being your business partner as well. However, working with your spouse takes more than it meets the eye. There are many couples who say this is the  best th ing that has hap pened t o them and the ir mar riage. Nowada ys, you can see a rise i n the number of couples who have given the corporate jobs a miss and instead, prefer to start something of their own, post marriage. SUCHNA AND YOGESH SHAH FALGUNI AND SHANE PEACOCK and can’t take your partner/spouse for granted,” she men- tions. It does take a little working on, as you have to understand that even after the work day is over, you go back to that same person. But for Shane and me, that was not a problem. “It was like an unsaid rule that work arguments and problems will not  be taken home a nd we are mature enough to handle the other petty problems.  because we kee p the real and true fact in mind and that is that we love each other too much to be both- ered by such things and also our work should never suffer  because of our p er- sonal differences. I personally feel that it is more volatile working with your spouse as a business partner than a friend or business associate. There has to be a cer- tain level of maturity in both the partners to handle the implica- tions.”Ask her about the space issue and she replies, “Well, you see, it is the way you perceive it. When we are at work, we are working professionals and nothing more so we get so involved in that role that it is not possible to think I am spending too much time with my hus-  band or the othe r way round and at times, when I do sit and think about it, I feel happy and lucky that I can actually spend a major chunk of my time with the person I love the most. So isn’t that an added advantage,” asks Falguni. Con- cluding the interview, Falguni says, “Neither of us can keep telling the other person dur- ing an argument that you don’t know the amount of work I have or the work pressure as it is equal for both of us. Also, this has given us an easy way to work on our relationship and make it strong.” So, for the young working professional couple of India Inc, transfer your commit- ment and love for each other into mon- ey making business models and be suc- cessful copreneurs. www.siu.edu.in I T7! . ?
