The Prayer Before Mass Come Holy Spirit, quiet my heart and my head, as I gather with my family, friends and neighbors to celebrate Mass. Quiet the thoughts and distractions that will keep me from worship. Open my mouth in prayer and song. Open my ears to hear God’s Word. Open my eyes to the mystery of the Eucharist. Open my heart to receive Jesus with love. May I go forth strengthened to take the Mass into my life this week. Amen.

Parish Information

ELECTRONIC GIVING! You can set up electronic account for making regular offerings, then notify the Parish office if you would like to stop receiving envelopes. Go to our website: www.saintcatherinewichita.com to set up your electronic donations, and follow the online instructions.

The magi followed the guiding light of a star to the newborn king, and upon their arrival they placed their gifts at His feet. These wise men may not have fully understood who Jesus was, but they gave us a good illustration of stewardship in action. Herod, on the other hand, is a false steward. He seeks information about Jesus, but only for his selfish gain. On this Epiphany Sunday, it would be wise to reflect on your own practices. Do you seek signs, like the star, that will lead you to the newborn king? Do you lovingly place your gifts at his feet? Let us be authentic in our stewardship in 2018!

“Who Are You Following?”

The Baptism class for January will be Monday, January 8th.

"Then they opened their treasures and offered Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh." What a wonderful example the Magi give us in their visit to the infant Jesus. First of all, they demonstrate profound faith in God's word, spoken through the prophet Micah: "And you, Bethlehem ... from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel" (cf. 5:2). Embarking on a long and difficult journey,

they trust that they will find this newborn king of the Jews in Bethlehem as the prophecy announced. On their arrival at the home of the Holy Family, the Magi also give us an example of profound humility. These important men, to whom kings

look for guidance and advice, do not hesitate to bow down, to "prostrate themselves" and give homage to a tiny babe. Putting their own position out of their minds, they reverently worship the infant Lord even as he sits on the lap of his mother. The generosity of these three "kings" is also evident as they open their treasure boxes and give to the poor child the richest of gifts. Traditionally, we understand the gold to symbolize the earthly kingship of Christ, the frankincense to represent his divinity, and the myrrh to stand as a symbol of the anointing he will receive upon his death. Finally, the wisdom of these men is evident in their decision to return to their country "by another way." Understanding the threat that King Herod posed to Jesus, they followed a plan that would help keep the divine child safe even though it meant inconvenience to themselves. Faith, humility, generosity, and wisdom. These gifts are the real legacy of the Three Kings. Today, let us ask God for the blessing of having these gifts in our lives.

SURVIVING DIVORCE The Office of Marriage/Family Life sponsors a session of the “Surviving Divorce” program THIS week: Mon., Jan. 8, 7– 8:30pm in the Multi-Purpose

Rm, St. Catherine of Siena Catholic School. This 12 week series/program was created to bring hope and healing to divorced and separated Catholics. The Cost is $35 which includes a “Personal Survival Guide”. Register: 425-0595 or [email protected].

It was the Sunday after Christmas at St Peter and Saint Paul's Church in Borden, Kent, England. Father John was looking at the nativity scene prior to packing away the figures when he noticed the baby Jesus was missing from the scene.

Immediately, Father John turned towards the vicarage in order to call the police. But as he was about to do so, he saw little Harry with a red wagon, and in the wagon was the figure of the little infant, Jesus.

Father John walked up to Harry and said, “Well, Harry, where did you get the little infant?”

Harry replied honestly, “I took him from the church, Father John.”

“And why did you take him?” asked Fr. John.

With a sheepish smile, Harry said, “Well, about a week before Christmas I prayed to little Lord Jesus. I told him if He would bring me a red wagon for Christmas, I would give Him a ride around the block in it.”

WE NEED YOUR HELP! We need your help in taking down the Christmas trees, wreaths and garland
