The Epiphany of the Lord January 5, 2020 They opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. — Matthew 2:11b

LIGHT OF THE WORLD Epiphany can be understood as an extension of the Nativity of the Lord that we celebrate on December 25. While at Christmas we celebrate Jesus’ coming as the long-awaited king and Messiah of the Jewish people, on Epiphany we celebrate the revelation that Jesus is the Savior and Light of all nations—Jews, Gentiles, and all people. The star shines so brightly that it attracts magi who come from far distant countries to worship Jesus. They are not Jews, yet they are drawn to the Light of the world. The letter to the Ephesians reveals that the Light of the world was for the Gentiles as well as the Jews—Christ gathers all people into the light of his love. The reading from Isaiah also describes a gathering of diverse peoples, but this time it is to the light that emanates from the people of God. TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Rise up in splendor, Jerusalem! The LORD shines upon you and the glory of the Lord appears over you (Isaiah 60:1-6). Psalm — Lord, every nation on earth will adore you (Psalm 72). Second Reading — The mystery has been made known that the Gentiles are coheirs, copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel (Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6). Gospel — Magi from the east arrived, saying, “Where is the newborn king of the Jews?” (Matthew 2:1-12).

RCIA—The RCIA session for Thursday, January 9, is THE SACRAMENTS: BAPTISM AND CONFIRMATION to be facilitated by Terry Abeln and Lynn Tate. For Catholics, the word sacrament might convey a sense of ritual and

religious experience. But for those not familiar with the Church, the idea of a sacrament can be puzzling. What is a sacrament? How do sacraments work? Do I really need all this ritual? Can’t I just have a simple relationship with God? These are some of the questions we will be discussing.

2020 Calendars: Parishioners, please make sure you pick up a 2020 calendar. They may be found in the vestibule of the church.

2020 CATHOLIC CHARITIES APPEAL Our Catholic Charities Appeal will

begin at the end of this month. Many thousands in our diocese depend on Catholic Charities to meet basic needs. The basic pledge is $576 per year or $48 per month. Many in our Christ the King Parish can and do pledge much more. Every contribution helps! Please, over the next few weeks, prayerfully consider what you can give. Please be generous. We need a response from each family at Christ the King.

Ladies Sodality Meeting...All ladies of the parish are invited to the first Ladies Sodality Meeting of 2020 on Tuesday, January 7th at 12:30pm. Visitors and new members always welcome!
