Look at the problems people face. Look at the pain, suffering, and hunger. Look at the neglect, the waste, the abuse. Everywhere I look, I see messed-up people, hurting people, lonely people!” The young man ranted and raved on and on. Finally, exhausted, he sat in the front pew and looked hopelessly at the cross. It’s tarnished surface reflected the dusty sunlight filtering in through the stained glass windows. “It’s all such a mess! This world you created is nothing but a terrible mess! Why even I could make a world better than this one!” And then the young man heard a voice in the silence of that dusty chapel that made his eyes open wide and his jaw drop. “And that is exactly what I want you to do.” It’s easy to identify problems that exist all around us. And sometimes we wonder why God doesn’t solve them all for us. But that’s why God created the church. That’s why God put you here---at this particular time and place. He has gifted you and given you the power to make a difference in the world. God has commissioned the church to be the hands and feet of Jesus in a broken world. G toriesSodAlmost 63 years ago Hank and Bonnie Nabers went to the County Adoption Agency in Memphis and filled out adoption papers to adopt a child. They had been to the a Catholic Orphanage where they were attracted to a fair haired little boy with a club foot, but were denied adopting because they were Methodist. After Hank and Bonnie left the Shelby County Orphanage the employee put their papers in the back of her desk and forgot about them. When this worker got pregnant and decided to quit working she cleaned out her desk and found my parents application papers to adopt. The worker then showed up on the Nabers doorstep and when Bonnie opened the door the worker said, “Mrs. Nabers would you like to keep Mary Jane for a while, her foster mom is sick.” I was 9 months old.

My mother took me and said, “This is our baby. We are keeping her.” When my dad got home from the dentist he asked whose baby was in the chair and my mother said, “That’s our baby!” I went with them to a church ice cream social that night.

My parents took me to baby doctors who discovered that I had Cerebral Palsy. The state took my parents to court stating adoptions of disabled kids couldn’t go through. My parents hired Raymond Sales as their lawyer and they were able to keep me. In 1972 Mr. Sales was Shrine Potentate and crowned me Shrine Princess at the Shrine Circus!

November is National Adoption Month. After the Holston Home for Children closed their Memphis branch in 2002, The Memphis Conference made the decision to continue with this needed ministry to children and families with the creation of a new and separate agency in 2003, called Hannah’s Hope.

This progressive agency, as a matter of both policy and principle, promotes each person’s abil-ity to develop to their maximum capacity. Hannah’s Hope honors the individual’s right to ac-ceptance, love and membership in a family. Services and programs offered by Hannah’s Hope will be inclusive of all persons without regard to race, color, creed, national origin, religion or age and will not promote any particular religious dogma.

As a missional agency of the Memphis Conference of the United Methodist Church, the Circle of Hope Pregnancy Counseling Ministry of Hannah’s Hope is funded, in part, by the budget of Outreach Ministries of the Conference. Office space is provided, in-kind, by Bartlett United Methodist Church in Bartlett, TN. Other expenses related to the pregnancy counseling ministry are covered by the generosity of individuals, groups, and congregations who join in the mis-sion of the agency to promote responsible choices for women in crisis pregnancy situations and families seeking to adopt. If you would like more information about Hannah’s Hope you can visit their website at http://www.hannahs-hope.org/ or call 901-327-5560.

The Day School sure did enjoy the Boo Out! Thank you for hosting a wonderful family friendly event for our little ones and the community. Also, thank you to everyone who helped contribute to our BOX TOPS for education drive. We have raised about $400 for the Day School just by bringing in BOX TOPS. We appreciate your help! Keep them coming.

We are in full swing celebrating Halloween and get-ting ready for Thanksgiving. Just wishing for some cooler weather! We are excited about our POW WOW coming up and all things fall.

We have already started tours for the 2017-2018 school year. If you have friends or neighbors that are interested in our program, send them our way so they do not miss out on a spot for next year. Thank you for supporting our ministry and loving the little ones that bless St. Luke's.

• Continue to pray constantly for St. Luke’s to be a place where our lives and our community will be transformed. Consistently pray for God to help us carry out the Great Commission and to help people know Christ.

• We are still seeking non-staff people to serve as the “point” person for various ministries. This person will also be asked to reach out to visitors who indicate a desire to find out more/engage with that particular min-istry (ie. Food ministries, rec ministries, young adult ministries, etc.). What better way to encourage others to get involved than with your passion and support for that particular ministry?• Walk the Neighborhood (Nov 19; 10 – 12 Noon)We need volunteers to walk!
