Bond Bryan’s latest project at the University of Nottingham has now received planning permission. After completion, which is envisaged for Summer 2016, the Technology Entrepreneurship Centre will house key local businesses as well as national enterprises, such as Big Data & Digital, Advanced Manufacturing, Aerospace and Energy. Companies based in the new Centre will be able to take advantage of the University’s leading centres of excellence in these areas and the ready supply of high quality postgraduate students. Matt Hutton, lead designer and associate director at Bond Bryan Architects said: “Our brief was to create a building that encourages and supports innovative forms of collaborative working and learning. We envisaged that this would increasingly require more adaptive and flexible spaces that offer a range of potential working, meeting and learning environments ranging

from structured group discussions and facilitated presentation areas, through to more informal self-study areas. A key element of the building proposal has therefore been to develop a concept that offers the ability to create a diverse mix of spaces, from large open plan areas to more cellular offices and specialist practical zones.” Bond Bryan’s solution has been to create a simple, relatively deep plan building form that makes maximum use of the limited available area on the site to control the height of the building and create efficient floor plates.

An atrium heart- space is cut into this simple form, not only enabling daylight to penetrate the floor plates, but crucially allowing views across the building, visually linking the activities on the different floors and creating a range of spaces; from contained single storey spaces for smaller scale and

cellular activities, through to double and even triple height open plan spaces where necessary. Externally the design seeks to create a distinctive and exciting building typology delivered within an economic solution.

It reflects the historical significance of the site whilst simultaneously replicating the modern contemporary surrounding buildings, providing a high quality statement building for the University. On working with Bond Bryan, Robert Scott, Operations Director at the University of Nottingham Innovation Park commented: “We were Immediately impressed with the imagination and innovation of the Bond Bryan design proposal, as it has a real WOW factor. It is great to find a very professional design team, who were able to interpret our requirements and changes as the design evolved.

The University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir David Greenaway, said: “This is outstanding news for the University. The new Technology Entrepreneurship Centre will provide space for start-ups and early stage businesses. Entrepreneurs will be able to access expertise from across the University, which will help them develop innovative new products and services and give them a crucial competitive edge.”www.bondbryan.com

The Royal Institute of British Architects’ (RIBA) London region has revealed its ‘RIBA MIPIM UK Visitor Lounge,’ designed by architecture practice, Draisci Studio. The temporary structure WA in place through the duration of MIPIM UK at London’s Olympia.

Draisci Studio, who won a design competition organised by RIBA Competitions, designed the eye-catching and vibrant visitor lounge occupying a large 200m² area in a prime position in the Olympia exhibition hall. Utilising flat pack modular boxes made from honeycomb cardboard that were simple to assemble, the result is a considered space that is welcoming, warm and stimulating for visitors. The design incorporates sustainable and reusable elements, while waste is minimised once the structure is dismantled.

The lounge, which is open to all delegates as a place to take a break from networking or hold a meeting, highlights the partnership between RIBA and MIPIM UK, whilst also promoting a newly published report from RIBA called ‘Client and Architect: Developing the Essential Relationship.’

The special report, one of the legacies of Stephen Hodder’s two-year RIBA Presidency, provides practical advice from clients and architects about how to improve their services and unlock greater value. RIBA London worked with the RIBA Journal, Herman Miller, Dufaylite and Techniker as supporters of the project. www.ribaj.com www.architecture.com/ribalondon www.draisci.com

Marmox Soundboard Brings Harmony To New Neighbours In Kensington Apartment Building

The excellent acoustic insulation properties of SoundBoard, manufactured by Marmox, has restored peace and quiet in an exclusive West London apartment building, where two flats were being knocked into one. The refurbishment and integration of the adjoining dwellings has been carried out by main contractor, LDB Construction.

LDB identified the Marmox SoundBoard as an ideal panel to use in overlaying the concrete subfloor, prior to installing electric underfloor heating coils. SoundBoard offers both acoustic and thermal insulation properties and helps prevent damage to cabling.

This build up was then covered with high quality timber flooring in some rooms while marble tiles featured in the rest. All of the SoundBoard panels measure 600 x 1250 mm, while the two different board thicknesses were used to address a step in the floor height between the adjacent apartments, which had to be brought level when the spaces were linked.

The 8.0 and 12.0 mm thick versions of the boards weigh 1.8 and 1.95 kg respectively while they offer a minimum 17 dB sound reduction and can be specified as part of the Robust Detail, Appendix D solution to impact sound transmission. They are readily cut or shaped with a knife to fit any room layout and in addition to their acoustic performance, SoundBoards provide thermal transmittance figures of 0.35 or 0.39 W/mK for the two different thicknesses. www.marmox.co.uk

The Perfect Interior For Preservation

The recently completed Herefordshire Archive and Records Centre for Herefordshire Council is a 3,350sqm scheme comprising a concrete repository over three floors and two-storey timber framed building housing offices, public search rooms and education facilities. It incorporates clever architectural design and building construction technology together with high performance materials.

The facility includes Troldtekt acoustic panels, made with 100% natural wood fibres. The panels’ benefits include high sound absorption, high durability, natural breathability, low cost life

cycle performance and sustainability. Herefordshire Council’s brief for the centre required sophisticated energy solutions and reduced running costs which the preservation and safeguarding of historic documents requires.

Danish manufactured Troldtekt acoustic tiles are specified throughout the UK and Europe and can be delivered as either FSC or PEFC certified panels. They are manufactured using 100% natural wood fibres and their benefits are high sound absorption, high durability, natural breathability, low cost life cycle performance and sustainability. Troldtekt sustainability has also been recognised with certification at Silver level within the Cradle to Cradle concept and earns gold on 4 out of 5 criteria in the Cradle to Cradle certification version 3.1. www.troldtekt.co.uk

James Latham Supplies Walnut To Create Superb StaircaseThe UK's biggest independent timber and panel product distributor, James Latham, has supplied 2.2m3 of Super Prime Walnut for the construction of an elegant staircase, which is now the focal point of a luxury new build residential property in Louth at the foot of the Lincolnshire Wolds.

The Super Prime Walnut was specifically chosen for its wonderful warm appearance to complement the striking panes of glass on the staircase which were selected to create the sense of open space.

Lincs Design Consultancy (LDC) were commissioned by the owner of the property to design this luxury home and were briefed to create and build a contemporary and luxurious dwelling.

The leading, multi-discipline Louth consultancy specialise in creating synergy between architecture, planning and sustainability so they were the perfect choice for this project.

A key part of the design brief - set by LDC and led by Associate, Chris Burkitt - was to construct a contemporary house with outstanding joinery features. GW Clark Joinery of Hull was appointed to focus on the installation of the staircase and after two weeks of meticulous bespoke carpentry, which demonstrated phenomenal craftsmanship, they produced this stunning centrepiece to the home.

GW Clark’s brief was to ensure that the staircase appeared to have glass seamlessly pouring out of the Walnut, with all the joints and aluminium being completely concealed. The result more than achieved this and they also used a lacquered finish rather than oiled as the lacquer is harder wearing and easier to maintain and keep clean.

In addition, they clad the staircase with the same Walnut planks but decided against matching nosing as they wanted to create a rustic floating appearance.

Richard Clark, owner of GW Clark Joinery, chose James Latham to supply the Walnut and said: “We needed to find a company that we could rely on to provide high quality products and adhere to our timescales. I’ve worked with James Latham for many years and for us they were the natural choice. As well as providing the material on time they were also on hand to offer technical support and knowledge as and when we required.”

Mitch Jackson, Timber Sales Representative at James Latham Leeds said: “This stunning staircase is a great example of how Super Prime Walnut can be incorporated into a project to create a high quality luxurious finish. We are delighted with the end result which looks amazing and we are looking forward to working with GW Clark on future projects.” www.lathamtimber.co.uk

Altro Flooring And Wall Cladding On Cutting Edge Of Excellence At New University Science CentreAltro flooring and wall cladding are providing a total, high-level solution of hygiene, safety and contemporary style at a new state-of-the-art science and engineering centre at the University of Wolverhampton. Designed and equipped to offer cutting-edge teaching and research facilities to future scientists, the new £25m Rosalind Franklin Building has been fitted with Altro WhiterockTM hygienic wall cladding, AltroScreed QuartzTM resin flooring, and Altro Designer TM 25 safety flooring.

The bronze-clad building was designed by architect Berman Guedes Stretton. Their vision was to create a contemporary structure that would support modern learning and revitalise the surrounding area. The architects’ Principal Director, Gary Collins, explains how they realised this vision. “Science and technology is a huge growth area at the university, both in terms of student demand for courses, and also because local industry in that field is on the up. This meant the university wanted to invest in a teaching and research facility that could meet this increasing need and provide the most sophisticated, state-of-the-art experience, both in terms of structure and the resources and equipment inside.

“The products we used needed to meet a number of criteria. Wall cladding for the labs had to be hygienic, easy to maintain and have real impact to complement our design for a modern contemporary space. Altro Whiterock is the industry standard for this type of requirement, and we and the scientific community know and trust it. We specify it all the time, so this was our number one choice.”

Altro Whiterock hygienic wall cladding is a cost-effective, durable, grout-free, water-tight smooth hygienic wall cladding system designed for building environments that are required to meet strict hygiene standards. The panels provide a stain resistant, wipe-clean surface with no gaps or cracks for bacteria to hide in. It is extremely impact resistant and ideal for tough areas. It meets current EU Directives on health and hygiene.

Gary Collins adds: “We specifically wanted resin flooring for the ground floor and reception area. It needed to be durable, ideal for heavy traffic areas, robust and resistant to chemicals, yet also attractive, decorative

and contemporary in its look. “We went to Coventry Transport Museum with Altro and the main contractor Kier to take a look at the AltroScreed Quartz resin flooring fitted in reception, to see for ourselves how it could work in practice. We were very impressed that it was both tough and attractive, and easy to clean. As part of that same visit we also asked Altro to give some guidance about safety flooring for the labs and upper floors of the Rosalind Franklin Building. The brief was to find a product that was hard-wearing, hygienic, one that could resist chemical spillages and be very safe underfoot, but with a contemporary design that would fit in with our vision.

“They showed us Altro Designer 25 and it ticked all the boxes. We were particularly impressed that it can be hot welded to produce flooring that is impervious to dirt. Plus, at 2.5mm thick, it can stand the test of time against heavy footfall, and resist chemicals in the lab.”

AltroScreed Quartz is a solvent-free system in which blended decorative quartz is bound with clear epoxy resin and finished with clear seal coats. The product provides a high-strength, chemically resistant decorative floor surface that can be coved and laid to drainage falls. It is available in nominal thicknesses of 4mm to 6mm. It has low slip resistance and is ideally suited to medium-duty production areas, entrance lobbies, offices, shops, circulation areas and laboratories. It has a closed surface texture that reduces dirt retention, making it easy to clean and maintain. The floor was sealed with Altro Screed Seal Rapicure Plus, providing additional slip resistance.

Altro Designer 25 is a 2.5mm thick hard-wearing safety flooring that includes coloured quartz crystals in striking base colour to enhance any interior scheme. Easy to lay, it can be hot welded to produce an unobtrusive and impervious floor, minimising the ingress of dirt and helping to maintain hygiene standards. It also boasts long-term durability and excellent slip resistance, which make it ideal for medium to heavy-duty environments. www.altro.co.uk

Probably The Best Saltless Water Softener In The World

People have been copying Aquatiere’s saltless water softeners over the past few years and have achieved limited success. Unfortunately the customer who expects ‘soft water’ was often disappointed by the fact that the softener did not perform as they expected. Aquatiere was the first UK company to use pre-crystalisation resins such as TAC and WAC to stop scale forming in pipework and equipment and market this as a saltless water softener.4 years of R&D later Aquatiere has now produced a product that meets customers expectations. The new Pureau range of saltless water softeners actually produce soft water using ion exchange. Resins – Simply softer water!www.aquatiere.co.uk

Stelrad believes that a radiator shouldn’t simply be functional, it should add aesthetic appeal - so now it is offering a range of highly reliable, high performance, good looking radiators to grace any bathroom or kitchen under its Aqua Series branding. It is offering within the Aqua Series its Decorative collection – five stylish yet cost effective radiator designs and secondly, its Designer collection – six product options that help deliver distinction to a room as well as warmth and comfort.www.stelrad.com

Coastal Hotel Brings Events And Conferencing Into The 21St CenturyAs part of a modernisation and extension of Headlands Hotel, Torquay, partitioning experts Style was specified to install three Dorma Moveo moveable wall systems, delivering flexibility to the space and maximising the opportunities to host a wide variety of events, meetings and conferences. “The moveable walls replace solid walls and windows”, explains Kim Furness, representative for Duchy Hotels which owns Headlands. “The high quality partitioning systems offer excellent privacy between the divided areas and have increased the potential revenue from the lucrative business and wedding events markets.”

This elegant Torquay hotel is situated in one of the most beautiful parts of Torquay on the English Riviera, sitting majestically on the headland looking out to sea. It is set in two acres of magnificent grounds and offers stunning views across Torbay with numerous coastal walks nearby. Working alongside Chillcott Designs, Style was contracted to the moveable walls as part of a significant refurbishment and extension to the Grand Lounge.

Replacing a large external window, Style recommended installing a DORMA Moveo glass partitioning wall, ensuring plenty of natural light throughout the Grand Lounge even when areas are divided. For added privacy, the partitions are fitted with integrated vertical-rising blinds. A simple yet brilliantly clever solution, the blinds rise from the bottom, rather than drop from the top, which means privacy can be provided whilst retaining space above eye level for light.

“This is the first UK installation of Dorma’s vertical-rising blinds’, comments Chris Winwood, Style’s Area Manager for the South. “By raising the blinds just above head height, no-one can see into the room, but light can still come in. It’s one of those obvious ideas that’s really rather ingenious!”

Style also installed two sets of DORMA Moveo semi-automatic partitioning systems, further dividing the Grand Lounge for smaller gatherings. Making it quick and easy to divide an area, all three Moveo partitioning systems incorporate semi-automatic technology. As each panel is slid effortlessly into place, an electrical circuit is initiated, automatically expanding rubber seals to precisely the correct level to create a firm seal for wall strength and maximum acoustic privacy of 50dB for the glass system and 49dB for the other two.

“The potential business from events is obviously important to future success of the Headland Hotel,” confirms Julian Sargent, Style’s Group Managing Director. “The new partitioning walls represent a good investment in the long term, greatly increasing the number and variety of meetings, private dining events as well as conferences and weddings that they can accommodate.”

Pendock Facilitates Fast-Track Toilet Refurbishment For Virgin Trains At Wolverhampton Station

The UK’s rail franchise companies always strive to ensure the travelling public do not suffer undue delays as a result of any work on the network - an ethos reflected during a demanding refurbishment project carried out within one of the Midland’s busiest stations where Pendock, the specialist encasement manufacturer, was the chosen supplier for high quality panels and partitions. The project focussed on the existing male and female facilities located alongside Platform 1 at Wolverhampton Station, which is operated by Virgin Trains and just as for the company’s sleek, torpedo shaped carriages, Pendock Washrooms was required to supply all of the toilet cubicles, privacy panels, doors and laminate faced vanity

units in Virgin Train’s familiar livery of Pearl White and Dusty Jade Graphix. The full height aluminium floor to ceiling posts for the three Ladies and two Gentlemen’s cubicles were meanwhile finished in a titanium coloured polyester powder coat (PPC). Ease of cleaning and durability of the finishes are imperative in such high usage situations and Pendock’s Ultimate Range of cubicles were chosen which not only offer extremely robust surfaces, but are fabricated with integral safety hinges mounted to the pilasters to give additional safety and security. www.pendock.co.uk

The winning property is the vision of Giordano Hadamik Architects (GHA) – established in 2012 by husband and wife, architect Daniele Giordano and engineer Nadine Hadamik. They designed the half-subterranean house to achieve Passivhaus energy performance values, with a carbon-zero target. It features a living turf roof, local stone facades and oak flooring, all reflecting the external natural environment. But the chief visual stand-out is the extensive Imago cornerless panoramic glazing, providing breath-taking views over the pool, patio and beyond across the Gulf of Genoa.

Daniele Giordano of GHA says the Imago Lift & Slide Doors and glazing played a key role in the project, maximising views and light. Large openings from floor to ceiling are designed to create an effect of continuity between inside and out.

He explains: “All the Accoya® wood frames are integrated in the structure to visually disappear, both from the outside through the natural stone cladding and the timber flooring and from the inside through the suspended ceilings and the incorporated timber furniture or plasterboard cladding to the walls. In the living room the large 6m span of Imago cornerless glazing, with a 1.5m return, becomes one of the most significant points of the

house. The hidden frame enhances the effect of lightness and transparency, framing views of the pool, the big oak tree, the patio and into the valley and the sea.”

The Imago Lift & Slide Doors system also contributed to helping the property reach Passivhaus standards. To minimise any possible thermal bridge, Climatech GRP composite thresholds are laid on cellular glass board insulation, achieving a high mechanical strength, while the top and the side of the fixed glass frame are fully framed by insulation.

The lift and slide wide span door which leads onto the patio functions as a filter zone, allowing a visual continuity of the internal exposed concrete wall to the external stone wall. Imago’s unique UNI-V central interlocking profile provides a highly weatherproof and insulated seal to the outside.

Even in British weather which means large doors stay closed for most of the year, Imago’s slim design means its impact is not lessened. There are no multiple frames to break up the view, creating a light-filled space. On top of this, using Imago provided a 40 percent reduction in glazing costs thanks to AGB’s clever engineering. It has created a simplified system which offers top-quality performance with less components for reduced costs and a stunning finish.

With self-build projects in the UK now accounting for almost 10 per cent of private sector completions, and the sector identified as a key market for bespoke, innovative products1, Imago Lift & Slide Doors combine the beauty of natural timber with calm, minimalist design. Installation and joinery companies who target the premium market will find Imago panoramic glazing a particular attraction for homeowners and designers.

AGB has everything architects need, with easy to download drawings and specifications which can be added straight into the design project. Manufacturers are given all the high performance test certification required to produce beautiful, fully CE compliant, Imago doors.  Little wonder, then, that Imago has been selected by the ADI Index to rank alongside such breath-taking Italian design icons as Ferrari, Stone Island clothing and the Illy espresso machine.

Impressive New Glassolutions Look For Rochdale InterchangeA recently opened landmark transport interchange in Rochdale which features extensive structural glazing by GLASSOLUTIONS has caught the attention of the industry’s leaders by picking up a string of awards in recognition for its architectural and engineering excellence. Glazing for the internal and external façades and shop frontages for the Rochdale Transport Interchange was designed by GLASSOLUTIONS to create a frameless, glass-to-glass appearance and achieve visual consistency across the project.

GLASSOLUTIONS was brought in at the planning stages of the £11.5m project. They introduced Wicona, who put forward the WICTEC 50SG option, based on one single system and common components, tooling and processes to simplify specification and reduce time and costs in fabrication and installation.

The outer glass was 6mm SGG PARSOL® grey body tinted toughened safety glass, which provides essential solar control to help deliver a comfortable internal environment. The cavity is 20mm air filled with Wicona SG toggle

insert. Inner glass was 9.5mm SGG STADIP PROTECT® clear laminated safety glass. The project was funded jointly by the Department for Transport, Transport for Greater Manchester and Rochdale Borough Council.

The building was designed to be highly transparent, with an enclosed single concourse creating a dramatic cornerstone feature to the town for visitors and daily users. The project has successfully delivered an enhanced experience for users, with exceptional passenger facilities, and is one of Europe’s first hydroelectric powered transport interchanges.

It has since been recognised with the award for Lancashire Regional Project of the Year at the North West Regional Construction Awards, and the award for Best Medium Project at the North West Structural Awards, organised by the Institution of Structural Engineers. CMS Windows Provide Fyne Views To Scottish RetreatA luxury west coast of Scotland retreat has opened a new spa and leisure complex featuring windows, doors and curtain walling manufactured and installed by CMS Window Systems.

The £10 million development by Portavadie Estates includes a 16-metre indoor pool, outdoor spa pools, two Scandinavian saunas, fully equipped gymnasium and spa, café and the largest heated outdoor infinity pool in Scotland.

The state-of the-art spa and leisure centre powered by local sustainable technology on the shores of Loch Fyne, Argyll, was designed by architects Stewart Associates, and complements the existing marina development and leisure offering.

The glazing specification by CMS ensures the new facilities enjoy stunning floor to ceiling views across Loch Fyne and beyond to the Isle of Arran, bringing nature right into the facility and flooding the building with light.

CMS manufactured and installed all the thermally enhanced curtain walling and windows for the building envelope – these were created using a combination of the advanced SCW+ system, Senior Hybrid Systems and the SPW600 system. The project also involved installing Metal Technology P50 louvres, colour coordinated in RAL 7015 with a matt finish.

The glass specification incorporated toughened glass with a low E coating, and in areas facing the water, BIOCLEAN self-cleaning glass was used to help maintain a high quality appearance in the long term. The glazing also incorporated glass spandrels in places, coloured to RAL 7021 to maintain consistent aesthetics.

CMS was appointed by construction company and main contractor Ashleigh (Scotland) Ltd following a competitive tender. Euan Clark, Commercial Director at Ashleigh (Scotland) Ltd said: “As the design evolved, CMS were a key part of our tender discussions, providing cost and specification advice against client and design team proposals.

“Communication was key to the success of the project and CMS was very good at keeping us informed of any variations including costs, which we were able to pass to the client’s representatives and keep them aware of any cost implications against design changes.

“CMS was extremely collaborative on this project, working well with us and the design team. Having an effective supply chain – with each company meeting their objectives – played a huge part in the successful delivery of this fantastic development.”

The Portavadie Estates project is typical of the high quality contracts that CMS Window Systems undertakes for clients across the UK. Its full service, BIM-ready capability ensures architects and contractors benefit from a highly efficient supply chain, which includes fabrication and installation of all supplementary components such as metal cills and flashings in-house. www.cmswindows.com

Romag’s BIPV Chosen For Battersea Dogs & Cats HomeRomag’s Building Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) panels have been installed as part of new £4.8million kennel block development at the Battersea Dog & Cats Home in London, which was opened by Her Majesty The Queen earlier this year.

This new concept in building integrated photovoltaics combines renewable energy generation with a glass laminate design to enable the PV cell to blend sympathetically into the fabric of the existing building.

The PV system was integrated into a canopy running the entire 145m length of the new kennel block, with the canopy incorporating several changes of height along the length of the installation. Not only were the BIPV panels able to meet load requirements, the size of the panels allowed them to be seamlessly incorporated into the architect’s initial design brief and vision.

Ablaze Green Energy Solutions Ltd, the main contractor for the installation, commissioned Romag to produce a specification for both BIPV panels and more traditional glass units. 1800mmx1200mm BIPV panels were selected which achieved the required electricity generation performance characteristics.

In addition, traditional glass sections were produced as ‘in-fills’ for sloping canopy sections where the canopy height was required to

change. ‘Dummy’ panels were also incorporated once the required energy generation target yield was achieved through the BIPV units.

Steve Rose, Director at Ablaze, said: “Romag met our requirement to use a UK based, well-established and highly regarded company for this significant investment. The entire system was initially designed with the Romag product in mind to ensure everything went smoothly together.

“A recent visit to site revealed that the system has already produced nearly 50% of the expected annual yield in just over four months of operation, the PV element is already proving to be highly effective.”

Romag is a UK pioneer in BIPV, with over 15 years’ experience in this market as well as over 70 years of glass laminating experience and expertise. Romag was established in 1943 and has built a strong reputation around the globe for manufacturing high quality bespoke photovoltaic laminates in a range of shapes and sizes to meet individual client aspirations.

Projects for the installation of skylights, facades, windows, covered walkways, spandrel panels and roof lights are regularly undertaken by Romag. More details at www.romag.co.uk

Daylight Leads In Leeds College

The new campus for Leeds College of Building was designed by architects Fuse Studios as the result of winning a major design competition. Using its skills to seamlessly integrate architecture and interiors, Fuse has fulfilled the College’s brief to promote the use of modern materials and construction methods, so the new project becomes an educational demonstration in its own right, as well as supporting BREEAM excellence. Materials specified included the diffused daylighting Kalwall cladding and roofing system.

Consistent with the winning design was a desire for internal transparency between all areas and a naturally-lit teaching environment which would not generate excessive solar heat gains. At the same time, it was recognised that too much glazing could distract the students, so the solution was to use translucent Kalwall.Derek Whitehead, Deputy Principal, Leeds College of Building, comments “We’re really pleased we went with the Kalwall solution for this project. The extra daylight really enhances the space and makes it very airy, light and bright. This has the benefits of not only reducing our energy consumption on one hand but, more importantly, creates a pleasant ambient light which enhances the health and well-being of our students and staff.”

Widely specified for educational projects and unlike conventional glazing, this system limits external views while admitting high levels of diffused daylight without shadows and glare or the stark contrasts of light and shade. Even on cloudy days, the interior is flooded with natural daylight, which means less artificial lighting and, because Kalwall is highly insulating, energy costs are reduced. Kalwall is distributed in England, Wales and Northern Ireland by Structura UK, a leading supplier, fabricator and installer of glass curtain walling, rainscreens, glass atria, windows and other architectural glass building products. www.structura-uk.com/kalwall

The Ins And Outs Of A Revolving Door

The revolving door is a common sight amongst larger commercial buildings and in many places where there is a high foot fall. The revolving door, usually consists of three or four doors known as wings which are spaced at an eqi-distance from each other around a central shaft. These wings rotate in a circle inside of a cylinder. The size of the cylinder can vary from small, allowing for just enough space for a single user to a larger size which allows enough room for several people, pushchairs or luggage to fit in.It is a well-established fact that the revolving door holds many advantages over the more traditional hinged door. Not only are revolving doors more energy efficient than regular doors but they help to keep the cost of heating and cooling to a minimum. When the users of manual doors open a regular door a large amount of air can escape the building. The installation of a revolving door can help to eliminate this and the amount of air that escapes whilst the door wings of a revolving door circulates is minimal. In this way, drafts are reduced and your lobby area is kept at a comfortable temperature. Another key feature of the revolving door is that they allow more people to enter and exit buildings at a quicker rate. A high frequency mobility hotspot can benefit greatly through the installation of a revolving door as it allows for people to enter and exit a building at the same time without any collisions. A more traditional door results in one person to wait whilst another passes through.Architects often opt for a revolving door to assist with the soundproofing of a lobby area. When in use, a revolving door will help keep out unwanted street noise and will eliminate the sound of slamming doors. They are also the preferred method of entry solution especially within a more confined space as a revolving door will often make a building seem much larger and more majestic in appearance. www.boonedam.co.uk

New Façade From Schueco Has Vents That Are Fully Concealed

New from Schueco UK is the FWS 60 CV concealed vent façade, a state-of-the-art aluminium system for floor-to-ceiling ribbon windows where it is not possible to distinguish from the outside which vents open and which vents are fixed.

This revolutionary innovation, which also has the added benefit of maximising light transmission through the façade, is achieved by merging the vent with the load-bearing structure. Even from inside, the only indications of an opening unit are a flat slimline shadow gap and the presence of the window handle. Moreover, to ensure safety in use, an almost invisible all-glass Juliet balcony can be integrated into the areas which have opening vents.

Also ideal for punched openings, the Schueco FWS 60 CV façade counteracts the prevailing trend of meeting the demand for ever greater levels of thermal and sound insulation by using ever larger window profiles. Instead, the system has been designed with face-widths that are elegant and narrow and yet its inbuilt engineering excellence means that it delivers impressive Ucw values as low as 0.85 W/m2K (with a glazing U value of 0.7 W/m2K) as well as an extremely high level of functionality.

A high-performance external, centre and internal gasket system enables the Schueco FWS 60 CV to satisfy stringent wind-load and weather-tightness requirements, while a side-hung or turn/tilt opening vent option and a choice of two basic depths give the façade useful design flexibility. With burglar resistance up to RC 2, the Schueco FWS 60 CV façade is the ideal system for enhancing the thermal performance and visual appearance of both new-builds and existing commercial properties. ESG Help To Create The Perfect Penguin Viewing ExperienceThis summer saw Bournemouth Oceanarium open their new £1.6m penguin exhibit. This ambitious project is the largest expansion in the centers history and was over 5 years in planning. The build saw the size of the center increase by over a third with the centre piece of the new building, a penguin beach enclosure that allows visitors to get up close to the new Humboldt penguins on display.

The designers wanted to allow all visitors to the exhibit to have as clear a view as possible to the penguins on display, in particular the thousands of small children that pass through the center. Traditionally the walls of such an exhibit were made of a solid material meaning children had to be lifted to the top of the wall to see the display. The solution was to use toughened laminated glass balustrades to line the perimeter, allowing even the smallest visitors to clearly see the penguins on display.

When glazing contractors Beaumont Rose were deciding on the specification of glass, they knew that it had to be strong enough

to prevent breakages that could injure visitors or the penguins on display, as well as being able to remain as free as possible from general scratches caused by the 250,000 plus annual visitors allowing for the best possible viewing experience. ESG were happy to supply 21.5mm clear toughened laminated panels to fit into Beaumont Roses bottom rail fixings, as well as a notched and drilled panel to create a gate for the keepers to enter the enclosure.

Scott Sinden, Managing Director of ESG, said ‘We are extremely pleased to have been chosen to supply our glass to yet another animal exhibit, it’s a testament to the quality of our glass and its strength that we are supplying another job where these factors are paramount. We know the superb workmanship of Beaumount Rose will ensure that glass installation is keeping to the high standards the rest of the project has been finished to’. www.esg.glass – 01376 520061www.beaumontrose.co.uk – 0208 879 1056

JIS Adds New Rye Tilting Rail To Sussex Range Of Heated Towel RailsTaking bathroom elegance and comfort to a new level, JIS Europe Ltd., has launched a new offering under its Sussex Range of heated towel rails.

The Rye Tilting Rail has been designed to resemble a sleek, ultra modern ladder, leaning casually and lightly against the wall in a clever design twist. Indeed, the spaced out slats arrangement has negated the old problem of trying to force a plump, fluffy towel between the often too small gaps typical of competing brands while at the same time favouring the minimalist fashion favoured by many interior designers nowadays.

The Rye range of towel rails is available in three different heating formats: these being electric only, dual fuel and the ability to be utilized solely with central heating. The rails are also suitable for open plumbing systems.www.sussexrange.co.uk

Caesarstone has unveiled five, stunning new colours for this autumn/winter. Three of the colours – Statuario, Symphony Grey and Urban Safari – will be exciting new additions to Caesarstone’s pioneering Supernatural series of colours, whilst Raw Concrete, a semi-matt, putty coloured quartz and Vanilla Noir, a dramatically dark colour, will join the Classico Collection.

Launched just three years ago, Caesarstone’s Supernatural Series, with its focus upon emulating the aesthetic appeal and tactility of natural materials, and in particular, marble, has been exceptionally well received. The range is acknowledged as having set a new ‘blueprint’ for quartz and the new colours are being launched as a direct response to demand from retailers, designers, architects and consumers alike. As with Caesarstone’s existing colours, the new palette provides an incredibly realistic, yet highly versatile alternative to marble and natural stone that can be specified throughout the home to stunning effect. Colours are perfectly in keeping with the current mood for muted, timeless shades – see the warm earthiness of Urban Safari or the cool, contemporary aesthetic of Symphony Grey. Vanilla Noir has a dark, opulent density that makes it perfect for industrially influenced kitchens, whilst Statuario with its elegant, soft grey veining will surely become as popular as Caesarstone’s 2014 hit, Calacatta Nuvo. Raw Concrete, meanwhile, belies its name with a warm, urbane appearance that is beautifully aligned with the current vogue for pared down, modern rustic room schemes.

A Refined and Sophisticated Engineering ProcessAs with all Caesarstone quartz, the new colours might embody the beauty and tactility of natural materials down to the very last detail, but that is where the similarity ends. The result of a refined and sophisticated manufacturing process, Caesarstone has championed the design and production of superior quality quartz.

Versatility, Durability… Peace of MindUnlike marble and many natural materials, Caesarstone’s quartz is completely non-porous. This means it can be used for myriad applications throughout the home – including within bathrooms, wet rooms and shower rooms. It is also so durable and resistant to wear and tear that it can be confidently used for flooring. And unlike marble, a spilled glass of red wine, olive oil or beetroot is unlikely to trouble a Caesarstone work surface. Ditto heavy pans, scratchy scourers and even ‘creative’ kids.www.caesarstone.co.uk

Aluprof Helps Specifiers Gain BREEAM PointsAluprof are aware of the need to gain a high level of BREEAM points in todays’ new and refurbished building projects. Not only does a building become more sustainable with a high BREEAM pass, potential clients are also seeking buildings which share their companies corporate responsibility towards the environment.

Aluminium is key in this lifecycle analysis as it is virtually 100% recyclable many times after its first use. Where possible, any chemical or carbon releases during the product manufacture and lifecycle is kept to an absolute minimum. With high performance finishes such as powder coating, aluminium systems can have a very long and useful life with low maintenance, often well in excess of alternative building envelope fabric. Coupling the long working life of Aluminium with its high efficiency thermal breaks, further emphasises the material as a specifiers first choice for product sustainability.

BREEAM (Building Research Establishment’s Environmental Assessment Method) is a now a global environmental assessment method, with four hundred and twenty five thousand buildings certified BREEAM ratings and two million registered for assessment since it was first launched in 1990. BREEAM sets the standard for best practice in sustainable building design, construction and importantly operation.

A BREEAM assessment uses a set of performance measures, which in turn are set against established benchmarks, that evaluate a buildings’ specification, design,

construction and use. Up to 119 credits are awarded across ten categories based on the outcomes of the assessment. Depending on the overall score, the building is then rated as a Pass, Good, Very Good, Excellent or Outstanding BREEAM rating. The ten measures are, Management, Health & Wellbeing, Energy, Transport, Water, Materials, Waste, Land Use & Ecology, Pollution and Innovation.

Aluprof systems have been designed and developed with BREEAM credits at their heart. Many projects in the UK and Europe are now BREEAM rated projects which are already successfully utilising Aluprof products and it is with that important experience, Aluprof can assist the specifier in meeting their sustainability goals.

As well as Aluminium providing credits in the Materials and Health & Wellbeing categories, Aluprof’s advisors can further assist the specifier in meeting the requirements of the Mat 5 responsible material sourcing category, thereby achieving up to a further three credits. Aluprof are currently ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 18001 accredited. Using advanced thermal modelling of high thermal performance aluminium windows and curtain walls can help the specifier achieve up to a further 15 credits within the Ene 1 category. Aluprof are also able to work with the specifier to quickly develop additional features and benefits to gain further credits within Innovation category.

The importance of a close working relationship between supplier and the specifier will help generate points within the BREAAM process and it is Aluprofs’ aim to be one of the most sustainable aluminium systems suppliers in Europe. Aluprof UK head office and extensive distribution centre is located in Altrincham, Cheshire. Systems are designed, fabricated and installed by selected, specially trained companies, to ensure each fabricated product meets Aluprof exacting standards.www.aluprof.eu

Stannah - Ace Tailor Of Lifts For Tight SpacesWhen it comes to tailoring passenger lifts to fit tight-squeeze spaces, Stannah Lift Services was the lift company of choice for Coastal Housing Group in their Bethesda Court social housing complex in Swansea, Wales.

The Stannah team removed the existing 4 hydraulic passenger lifts and separate motor rooms (installed in 1994 by other lift manufacturers) and replaced them with gearless-traction, motor room-less, 6-person passenger lifts.

Critically, each 450kg lift had to be tailored to fit exact shaft dimensions, maximising the space available. With a 5mm tolerance, design and manufacture had to be spot on – which it was, and all achieved within 16 weeks.

Gloucester Opens Its Gateway To Mapei’s Eco Products At Britain’s Greenest ServicesA Mapei decorative floor system has been installed at Gloucester Services Southbound, which is an environmentally-friendly service station on the edge of the Cotswolds. The main building is constructed from local stone and timber, and features an arched grass-covered roof set to receive BREEAM excellent rating. Three individual Mapei products were specified, alongside porcelain tiles and vinyl sheeting, throughout a 1,324m2 area. Designed by AFL Architects, all floor works were carried out by Polished Concrete Designs for main contractor, Buckingham Group Contracting Ltd.

Gloucester Services Southbound is the second phase to the Gloucester Services Northbound known as ‘Britain’s greenest motorway services’. This joint project was delivered by Gloucestershire Gateway Trust and Westmorland Limited (Westmorland Family are also behind Tebay Services in Cumbria).

The charity, Gloucestershire Gateway Trust, has already generated income from its Northbound service station and will further generate income and support for nearby target communities and charity partners in Gloucestershire and Stonehouse. The site includes extensive landscaping along with electrical vehicle charging stations and capacity to switch to

bio-fuel pumps. A farm-shop also features at the site, stocked with local produce, in place of fast food outlets. Within the main building, around 1,800 m2 of screed containing Mapei’s Topcem fast-drying hydraulic binder was laid over insulation and underfloor heating.

The screed was then overlaid with Mapei’s Primer SN to provide a key for Mapei’s Ultratop in anthracite, a decorative coloured flooring system designed to give a polished concrete appearance. The petrol station was also completed using Mapei’s Ultratop system, again in Anthracite.

Gloucester Services Southbound opened its doors to the public in May 2015, is located on the M5 Southbound - between junctions 11a and 12. For more information on Mapei products and training days, please visit www.mapei.co.uk, email [email protected] or tel. +44 (0)121 508 6970.

Steadmans Warns Economic Growth Figures Show Importance Of Northern Powerhouse Being Delivered

Building products manufacturer Steadmans has said latest UK economic growth statistics make it more vital than ever that the government delivers its so-called Northern Powerhouse. The overall 0.7 per cent UK expansion in the period to June was due to the service sector, as manufacturing output fell by 0.3 per cent. Liam O’Hara, development director, said: “Although Steadmans is weathering the present climate well, these overall figures underline how important initiatives like the Northern Powerhouse, which will help rebalance the economy away from the service sector and the South-East, could be.” www.steadmans.co.uk

Granite Transformations Franchise Conference Previews Brand TransformationGranite Transformations, the home improvements brand owned by the international Trend Group, held its most important and best-attended UK franchise conference ever, last month. Franchise owners and their partners from around the national network, prospect franchisees, head office support staff from Tunbridge Wells and senior corporate executives from Florida, including Trend CEO Andrea Di Giuseppe, all took out time for the conference, held at Sarah Beeny’s magnificent Rise Hall.

The event provided the launch pad for the UK element of a major global rebranding programme, which will see the small yet significant brand transition from ‘Granite Transformations’ to ‘Trend Transformations’, first through a year-long pilot project, then a subsequent national rollout. The Group CEO offered his personal vision for the new brand, with its wider product portfolio, while senior directors from top rebranding agency, FutureBrand, outlined the practicalities.

Guest speakers included Daily Telegraph business columnist, John Timpson CBE, and top interior designer and television presenter, Julia Kendell, who provided market insights from an independent perspective. TV and newspaper property guru Sarah Beeny hosted the event, chatting with guests and posing for pictures. Chaired by Danny Hanlon, Chief Operating Officer of the UK and North American operations, and organised by his colleague Sam Gent, newly appointed European Brand Manager, the 2-day function was staged at the hall, where Trend and Granite Transformations finishing products and craftsmanship are much in evidence.

The venue was also notable for an absence of mobile phone and wi-fi links, which contributed directly to a more convivial atmosphere and relaxed networking amongst colleagues, away from the day-to-day pressures of the office. Among the highlights of the event were the annual presentations to the top network performers, with the coveted Franchisee Of The Year title going to Ipswich business owners Steve Leech and Darren

Cribb, following an extended period of double-digit revenue growth. They, together with GT Cambridge franchisees Peter and Henry Morrison and GT Cheltenham/Bristol owner Matthew Bird, received recognition for conspicuous monthly sales achievement, with special President’s Awards. Early UK franchise adopters Gavin and Sally Whittaker of GT Tunbridge Wells, again took the prize for highest annual revenue.

Highlighting the importance of glass mosaic and agglomerate hard flooring under the new branding strategy, Ferhan and Aisha Rasul of GT Swansea were presented with the Cactus Award for Trend product sales, which included a major flooring installation in Cardiff. Presaging yet another tranche of additional franchise recruits, Jason and Kelly Ball of GT Banbury gained the New Start-Up Award, for the most successful first twelve months. Meanwhile, recognising his franchise’s success in bathroom installations, Matthew Bird was also invited to talk to fellow franchisees about the additional revenue opportunities presented by interior projects of this kind.

The conference was sponsored by sink supplier Blanco Germany, media agency All Response Media and digital marketing specialist Motionlab, with support from BA Components, SpaceandPeople, the BFA, KeraKoll, PVL vehicle wrappers and other suppliers, all of whom were allocated display space within the hall and given a chance to talk with those attending.www.gtfranchise.co.uk

Portaloo Launches New Guide To Specifying Accessible Toilets And WashroomsPortaloo, part of the Portakabin Group, has launched a new guide to help facilities and estates managers specify toilets and washrooms for people with disabilities, including those who are unable to use standard accessible toilets.Regulations are in place requiring building owners and service providers to make reasonable adjustments to their premises to cater for people with a wide range of disabilities. Buildings have to be accessible and toilet and washing facilities should be adapted for a range of users. “The lack of fully accessible toilets simply denies people with severe disabilities the right to freedom, mobility and community participation”, says Mark Fielding, Regional Manager at Portaloo. “Hundreds of thousands of people need these extra facilities in public places to help them enjoy the day-to-day activities that many of us just take for granted. Our team has a wealth of expertise in the provision of accessible and fully accessible toilet and washroom facilities. This new guide shares that knowledge and experience to help raise awareness of the key specification considerations and encourage more organisations to provide accessibility in the built environment – from public services and transport to leisure and sport.”

The guide can be downloaded from the Portakabin website and offers practical advice about:

• The different types of accessible toilet – for users of standard-sized wheelchairs and fully accessible toilets designed for people with severe disabilities and their carers

• What legal obligations must be met when providing toilets for disabled people – the guide considers the recommendations of the Changing Places Consortium and the requirements of the Equality Act 2010, Disability Discrimination legislation and Building Regulations Part M

• Who needs to provide accessible toilets and washrooms• Key factors to consider when installing or altering toilet and washroom

facilities for disabled people including size, design and layout; toilet, washbasin and floor specifications; the need for an adult-sized changing table, ceiling hoist, privacy screen and assistance alarm, and access considerations

• Implications when converting existing premises and for installing a new accessible toilet building

• Criteria for selecting a supplier of accessible toilet facilities, such as quality assurance, extent of service provision, product quality, site surveys, customer service commitments and how to compare quotations.

To meet the growing demand for fully accessible toilet and changing facilities, Portaloo has recently launched www.portaloo.co.uk/accessible-plus" Portaloo Accessible Plus – the UK’s first self-contained, semi-permanent toilet and shower building for wheelchair users and their carers which is available for short or longer-term hire. This building has been specifically designed to provide more comfort, dignity and privacy than any other interim facility currently available.

To download a copy of the new guide, see www.portaloo.co.uk/accessible-guide.

British Timber – The Truly Sustainable SolutionTom Barnes of Vastern Timber discusses the many advantages of choosing British timber and takes a look at three areas where Britain leads the way.It is widely understood that wood is amongst the most sustainable of building materials. The very process of growing trees delivers numerous environmental benefits, and once harvested a tree can be replaced simply by planting another. Once a timber product has reached its end-of-life, it is often reusable by chipping or pulping, and if not, timber is totally biodegradable.

However, it is not always fully appreciated that there are different degrees of sustainability when talking about timber. Issues such as the management of woods and forests, as well as the carbon footprint incurred during transport over long distances all impact on the degree of sustainability contained in a piece of wood. And of course there are the social communities that are either impacted by bad forestry practice, or which are reliant on the timber industry.

By choosing British timber you know that you are choosing the most sustainable option. The UK woodland and forestry industry has excellent standards and in choosing British timber you are helping to support further improvement as well as supporting communities that rely on the timber industries.

Sustainability is not the only advantage to be gained from choosing British timber, especially hardwood. Oak remains the most iconic of British hardwoods and has been used in construction for centuries. Original oak beams continue to support structures more than 500 years old. The traditional popularity of English oak can largely be explained by the availability of the trees and durability of the wood. As a natural building material, oak is extremely hard to destroy; large sections will resist fires intense enough to melt metal and will flex to accommodate the natural movements of a building.

English oak is considered to be the strongest of the oaks because it has a more interlocking grain than oak from continental Europe, which is characteristically more mild and straight grained. While imported oak can often be cheaper, there is a sustainability price to pay if the wood is imported. There is also a great deal of difference in design flexibility. Local British sawmills are easy to access, and as well as the option to inspect timber and cuts before choosing, the designer will benefit from more flexibility in cuts from their local sawmill, especially curved and shaped wood. Of the other native hardwoods, sweet chestnut is proving increasingly popular for external cladding.

Vastern Timber recently triumphed at the national Build It Awards, with the company’s Jointed British Sweet Chestnut Cladding securing Best Cladding System. The product delivers the aesthetic of oak, as well as specification choice and environmental benefits. The wood comes from well-managed, sustainable sources and makes for a beautiful and superior cladding system.

British sweet chestnut cladding is hard-wearing, strong and durable, and relatively light when compared to other hardwood cladding, making it ideal for exterior use. Additionally, sweet chestnut is known to be a very stable timber, resulting in less movement, distortion or splitting. It has a similar golden colour to oak, but with stronger grain and occasional dark brown mineral streaks and will weather to a natural silver colouring if left untreated.

Vastern Timber is also a key partner in a team developing the first commercially available thermally modified British timber. Thermal modification involves using intense heat to change the structural properties of wood. The combination of high heat and steam ‘cooks’ the sugars and resins out of the wood, leaving nothing for mould, fungus and bacteria to feed on, resulting in significantly higher levels of durability than non-modified timber. The thermal modification process involves no chemicals and does not rely on impregnating the timber. Unlike most other treatment processes, thermal modification reaches to the core of each piece, rather than simply treating the surface.

Depending on the intended use of the thermally modified hardwoods, both the temperature and the modification period are varied. For external use, where durability is important, the wood is ‘cooked’ at a higher temperature and for a longer period.

The thermal modification process results in products that are significantly more stable than non-modified timbers, meaning they expand and contract less when faced with changes in ambient temperature and humidity, making them a superior solution for a range of uses. Additionally, the superior stability results in significantly less cupping and distortion when used outside. The full modification of thermally modified hardwood allows for cutting and re-working without a loss of performance and without the need for additional treatment.

Through quality and innovation, British timber will continue to be the superior choice, especially for those looking to ensure full sustainability in their designs and projects. www.vastern.co.uk

Nationwide Platforms introduces ‘Intelligent Secondary Guarding’ innovation

Nationwide Platforms has become the first access hire company to develop and introduce a secondary guarding system designed to prevent a trapping or crushing incident before a collision can occur. SkySiren® PCS™ (Pre-Crush Sensing) represents a major step forward in powered access safety. It automatically stops a mobile elevating working platform (MEWP) boom before the operator comes into collision with an object that could lead to a trap or crush incident. The system is the first in the UK to offer a double protection barrier against trapping and crushing incidents, creating a new level of guarding, which its designers have called ‘Intelligent Secondary Guarding’. SkySiren® PCS™ combines Nationwide Platforms’ pioneering SkySiren® secondary guarding device with a new system called Pre-Crush Sensing, which uses ultrasound sensors to detect objects that present a trapping or crushing hazard for the operator. As well as preventing trap and crush collisions before they can happen, the system has other key benefits. It warns operators about potential hazards, so they are more alert in high risk areas.www.nationwideplatforms.co.uk

An Ace Idea - With The Potential To Solve The World’s Housing Shortage

An innovative modular building system which has the potential to plug the shortfall in low-cost housing and schools, not just in Britain but across the world, is using expanded polystyrene (now known across Europe as airpop™) at the centre of its unique patented design. In its most recent project, the Acermetric building system has just slashed costs and build-time at Coppice Primary School in Chigwell where a two-storey multi-purpose 466m2 “Centre of Excellence” was assembled in around 13 weeks on site by just four builders lifting panels by hand and installing the elements with a single tool!

The Acermetric system comprises a range of interlocking panels each of which is effectively a sandwich of grey EPS with the option of the outer board material specified according to the building needs. Together with window and door cassettes, the full range of elements extends to around forty shape options which, when locked together and linked to patented roof support beams and columns, allow more than a million combinations of high-strength, three-dimensionally stable structures – a ‘lego-like’ system capable of creating a building of virtually any shape, size or design. According to the company’s calculations, the system could easily accommodate buildings up to ten storeys high, is suited to areas prone to ground movement and even to earthquake risk, and has undergone stringent UKAS testing covering strength, fire resistance, acoustic protection, thermal insulation and longevity.

Chairman of the BPF EPS Group David Emes said: “There are many building systems which take advantage of airpop™ but this is one of the most innovative we have come across. It’s an ideal building material for modular or elemental systems because it can easily be cut or moulded to shape during the manufacturing of the elements and has built-in BBA Approval, BRE Certification, BRE Green Guide A+ rating and many wider industry accreditations. It also comes closest of any modern building material to fulfilling the 60-year performance life target set by the UK Building Regulations”.

On 26 September 2015 The Energy Related Products (ERP) Directive, incorporating Ecodesign and Energy Labelling Directives for water heaters (Lot 2) comes into force, meaning that water-heating products sold in the UK will need to meet minimum energy performance criteria in order to be legally placed on the market, and will require an energy label.

“The Energy Labelling Directive offers transparency to specifiers, installers and end users who will now have a clear guide for choosing the most efficient units available,” says Tony Gittings, Managing Director of Rinnai UK.

“Rinnai now brings to market the most expansive range of A-rated appliances, that have load profiles suitable for both domestic and commercial projects. Our appliances range from load profile(s) for small domestic models to XXL sized commercial units,” says Gittings.

Rinnai is also set up to offer installers expert help with system labelling. The onus of labelling in this scenario falls on the installer, rather than the manufacturer, who will be responsible for system labels for those installations that combine a water heater with renewables, for example.

Rinnai has been working well ahead of the deadline for ERP and took delivery of its coveted A-rated labels in July. To get to that stage, Rinnai had all its appliances tested twice. The first test was carried out at the Rinnai headquarters in Japan, where units underwent rigorous interrogation by the company’s expert engineers and then again by notified body who awarded the rating.

“An energy efficient continuous flow gas fired hot water system, whether teamed with renewables technology or used on its own, actually has a lot to offer as we move towards the Government’s carbon reduction goals. Rinnai Infinity units have been developed to exceed all current demands and lead the field in this respect. As seen with the launch of the Rinnai HDC1600i which has been introduced to adhere to the low-NOX requirements of ERP in 2018.

“And don’t forget, the A-rating applies to a unit in use under specific test conditions – ie when fuel is being used. As an ‘A-rated’ Rinnai unit only uses fuel when water is being drawn it doesn’t suffer any standing losses, making the system more efficient than any stored hot water system.

“In effect, an A-rated Rinnai continuous flow water heater, will always have an advantage in efficiencies over A-rated storage systems, as there is no standing losses or any need to re-circulate and re-heat water to avoid stratification,” Gittings explains.

When these Rinnai water heaters are paired with solar thermal technology and the latest intelligent controls are used for ultimate renewable heat optimisation, even higher efficiencies can be achieved, Gittings adds.

Rinnai’s advanced engineering and attention to detail has resulted in the complete range of Rinnai Infinity water heaters being given the coveted A-rating. It shows an energy efficient continuous flow gas fired hot water system, whether teamed with renewables technology or used on its own, actually has a lot to offer as we move towards the Government’s carbon neutral goals. Rinnai Infinity units have been developed to exceed all current demands and lead the field in this respect.

Gittings concludes: “It is great news that Rinnai has recognition in the form of the A-rating across all our appliances – domestic, light commercial, heavy duty and industrial. It shows we are well on the journey to assist with the greening of industry with our continually improving efficiencies. However, there is still a way to go for the industry to develop even more superior energy efficient technologies - which is why Rinnai is looking at new developments with an eye to October 2018 when the next tier of legislation is due.” www.rinnaiuk.com

Renewable Technology At Core Of The Omnie Collection

Heat pumps remain a relatively nascent technology in the UK market, meaning customers should seek to purchase properly integrated systems from manufacturers with a proven track record.

The Omnie collection by Timóleon brings

together just such an offering, which includes high performance air to water heat pumps as well as a compatible selection of underfloor heating systems and fully compatible control options.

The 6 to 9 kW LWD models have been developed to offer high efficiency and very quiet operation as well as a long low maintenance working life. The LWD is intended to be located close to a property while the internal module contains the hydraulic unit with the expansion vessel, back up heater and circulator. If the predicted load demands the installation of two heat pumps, the internal HMD hydraulic unit will provide the necessary control functions for the cascade arrangement.

The Omnie range also features an LW ‘monobloc’ model that is designed to be located away from the building. Almost as quiet as the LWD alternative, the 12 to 35 kW LW heat pumps produce a noise level of 51 dB at one metre distance.

Not all air source heat pumps are suitable for use in the UK’s moist temperate climate, either in respect of their performance or their durability, but the LWD heat pumps under the Omnie brand are corrosion protected and designed to both generate high COPs (Coefficients of Performance) at lower temperatures, and to minimize defrost cycles when the weather is freezing. www.omnie.co.uk

Prestige Johannesburg Office Development Stays Cool With SE Controls

A new prestige office development in Sandton, Johannesburg is using a combined smoke and natural ventilation system, involving automatic window vents in the building’s elliptical glazed central tower, which is actuated and controlled by an integrated solution from SE Controls Africa.

As part of this process, the building’s 12 storey elliptical central tower features a fully glazed external facade within an aluminium lattice structure, which incorporates an automatic window and vent opening system to provide natural ventilation and overnight cooling, as well as smoke ventilation in the event of a fire.

To achieve the necessary level of versatility and control required for the automated vent system, SE Controls supplied 49 SECO N 24 25 twin chain actuators with a 350mm stroke length together with 7 SHEVTEC® control panels and manual control points, which were networked using the company’s OSLink network cards. An external weather station was also installed to provide an information feed on ambient conditions into the system.

In normal operation, the windows open and close automatically, to provide cooling and a supply of fresh air, but in the event of a fire this is over-ridden and vents are opened to allow smoke to be vented, enabling escape routes to be kept smoke free.Further information can be obtained by visiting www.secontrols.com or calling +44 (0) 1543 443060.

Trend Clears The Air At Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS TrustReducing hazards to patients and staff from airborne contaminants, dust and harmful microorganisms is a fundamental requirement within hospital operating theatres. So when Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust wanted to make its ventilation systems more efficient and effective it asked Trend Control Systems to configure its Building Energy Management System (BEMS) to maintain air quality and save money.

Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust’s operating theatres were being ventilated even during long periods when they were empty. ‘Setting back’ is traditionally considered the best way to maintain high levels of air quality and reduce the potential for airborne contaminants, dust and harmful microorganisms to proliferate. It involves lowering the temperature and reducing the supply and extract air volumes by a small amount when the theatre is not required. This ‘standby mode’ also allows the theatre to be brought up to full operating conditions in a relatively short period of time.

However, Health Technical Memorandum 03-01 (HTM 03-01): Specialist Ventilation for Healthcare Premises Part A, Design and Validation, section 6.23, states, ‘Many ventilation systems may be completely shut down when the area served is not in active use. Alternatively, where there is a need to maintain a background condition, the ventilation output can be reduced by setting back the system.’

With this in mind, Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust contacted Trend to discuss how its existing BEMS could help transition from setting back to a full shut down position when the operating theatres at Rochdale Infirmary and Fairfield General Hospital Bury were not in active use.

Of most concern was the fact that once the ventilation system was switched off the theatre would have no way of removing any environmental contaminates caused by people entering and leaving the rooms. Similarly, under certain environmental conditions, any warm moist air trapped inside the ductwork after the system is turned off could become a source of contamination.

The team and Trend proposed a plan that would address the Trust’s health and safety concerns, while initiating significant energy savings and operational efficiencies. As contaminates usually come from people entering and leaving the operating theatres, it was important to make sure that the system is activated whenever traffic exceeds certain defined parameters. Peter Moore, Key Account Manager at Trend, states, ‘We

decided to install passive infrared (PIR) movement detectors that could be fully integrated with the BEMS. To address the cleaning issue, we suggested that the ventilation system should run at no less than half speed prior to undertaking any tasks and remain active for a period after completion.’

The BEMS has been configured to fully control how the air handling units (AHUs) operate. The AHUs have an occupancy time profile in conjunction with the PIR technology in some instances, but purely PIR control in others – the latter scenario is gradually being introduced across all the operating theatres, as it has been found to be more effective.

Where the AHU has a time profile in place, it maintains the operating theatres as occupied for that set period – outside of this period the PIRs maintain the space as occupied when movement is detected. After a period of 30 minutes where no movement has been detected outside of the occupied time period, the AHU then shuts down. However, any subsequent movement detected by the PIR reactivates the AHU for a minimum period of 30 minutes. In locations that only have PIR technology, the AHU is activated for a minimum of 30 minutes from the start of each detected movement.

It was also felt that operating the system in conventional set back mode in the winter months would be useful in preventing water systems within the plant freezing and stopping ice forming on filters. Meanwhile, limiting the minimum temperature inside the theatre to 15°C minimises the risk of condensation forming and allows the room to be restored to full operating conditions within a reasonable time.

John Allwork at Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust is delighted with what’s been achieved and concludes, ‘Our BEMS has once again proved invaluable in helping us become a more energy efficient operation. The health and safety of patients, staff and visitors is of paramount importance to us and it was vital that our desire to fully shut down the ventilation systems in the operating theatres had no negative implications. Not only has this been achieved, but we are now able to save around £30,000 a year in energy costs.’ www.trendcontrols.com

Mega Protects Historic Museum FloorFounded in 1683, the Ashmolean Museum is the most significant museum of art and archaeology in the UK and welcomes more than a million visitors each year.

Oxford based flooring firm, ACH Flooring, regularly recoats the original herringbone floors in the City’s Ashmolean Museum with Bona Mega. Cleverly formulated to use oxygen as a crosslinker, Bona Mega delivers the performance of a two component lacquer in the convenience of a one pack product and is designed to offer high wear and chemical resistance in domestic, commercial or public environments. A sustainable, NMP free lacquer, Mega provides the museum’s maintenance team with a durable, easy to clean surface. Bona Cleaner and Bona Polish are used for ongoing maintenance of the floors.

ACH’s Kevin Smith said “We have been using Bona lacquers since the 1980s when the company’s core products included Pacific One and Pacific Stong. Today we like using Bona Mega for commercial and domestic projects because of its fast drying times, it has no smell, and for the finished look. Also our mops and brushes can be easily cleaned. We’ve been using it now for many years and have never had any problems with it.”

The museum team wanted a soft sheen to the surface so Kevin recommended using one coat of Bona Prime Classic followed by three coats of Bona Mega Silk Matt to achieve this. Bona Mega is available in four sheen levels including Extra Matt that combines a hard wearing surface with a very natural, almost ‘invisible’ finish to the surface. Bona’s technical team is available for support on site or over the telephone to assist you with your wood flooring project and to ensure the surface meets your client’s aesthetic and performance criteria. The company is also a RIBA approved CPD provider and offer a seminar on how to specify finishes for wood floors. Further information is available at bona.com

Introducing BiosolarDeciding between a green roof and photovoltaics (PV) has been a question faced by many industry professionals over recent years when designing a flat roof; however these two technologies are no longer mutually exclusive options with the introduction of biosolar roofs…

WHAT IS BIOSOLAR?A biosolar roof is the successful combination of biodiverse and extensive green roofs with photovoltaic systems, delivering a duality of technologies for environmental advantage and increased profitability for your client or building owner.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?Biosolar roofs deliver all the benefits of green roofs and solar power in a synergy of technologies that maximises PV output and the footprint for the green roof:

• Cooling effect of vegetation increases solar output by up to 5%• Green roof element acts as ballast so waterproofing is not penetrated• Entire roof qualifies as biodiverse green roof by maximising area for

vegetation• Shade tolerant species thrive under PV creating more diverse flora

and fauna community

WHAT ARE THE APPLICATIONS?Although designed primarily for new build applications where this synergy of solutions is often required to meet planning and BREEAM requirements; the biosolar system can also be retrofitted on many existing roofs without the need for any structural modification to the building. The construction industry has long been calling for rooftop solutions that include a duality of technologies for environmental advantage, and a biosolar roof delivers just that providing reciprocal benefits from the PV module and green roof components.

Bauder BioSOLARFlat roof manufacturer Bauder was the first company to introduce green roofs to the UK market over 30 years ago and it has now developed its own innovative PV mounting system for biodiverse and extensive green roofs, Bauder BioSOLAR, which was launched at the inaugural ‘European Biosolar Roof Conference’ that took place September 28th at City Hall in London. The event was supported by the Mayor of London and featured many expert speakers from across Europe - who are already successfully delivering PV and green roof technology.

The Bauder BioSOLAR system uses the substrate and vegetation to provide the ballasted installation mechanism, removing the need to penetrate the waterproofing to secure the mounting units to the roof and simultaneously makes the most of the available area for vegetation, enabling the entire roof to qualify as a biodiverse green roof.

A key feature of Bauder’s unique system is that the front edge of the polycrystalline PV panel is raised 300mm above the finished green roof level, allowing light and moisture to reach beneath the panels whilst ensuring the mature vegetation will not shade the panels and can be easily maintained. The mixture of sunny, shaded and sheltered areas together with a variable depth of FLL compliant extensive substrate gives a matrix of different habitats that allow a broader range of plant species to thrive, and a rich foraging environment for bees and insects.

The BioSOLAR solution also delivers advantages to the building, as the cooling effect of the vegetation and water held within the green roof system preserves the ambient temperature around the PV array, which in turn increases the solar output by over 5% (studies in Germany have shown that PVs work most efficiently with a temperature of around 24°C). The PV mounting frame features a 100% recycled high-density polyethylene base board and consists of just three components - a quick fix angle support, profile module rail and module fixings – that make for an extremely quick and simple installation process.

Bauder can work with you throughout the entire project delivery process; from the initial consultation and site survey through to the monitoring of the installation and handover to the client with a full guarantee. You will also receive support designing the PV array and green roof construction, and a bespoke specification package for every element of the roof that includes detail design and wind uplift calculations.

With Bauder able to supply and install all of the waterproofing, green roof and PV elements it gives you total confidence that this energy efficient and cohesive solution is the right one for your clients, with single point responsibility for all the roofing components. To find out more information about BioSOLAR roofs contact Bauder on 0845 2718800 or alternatively visit their website www.bauder.co.uk

Kemper System Roof Will Mature At Cheadle Care HomeResidents at a new care home in Cheadle, Cheshire, will be able to enjoy the greenery of the building’s parkland setting on their roof terraces thanks to a green roof installation from Kemper System.

Constructed and operated by Care UK, Abney Court is located in the historic grounds of Abney Hall and will provide round-the-clock residential and specialised care, including provision for residents with dementia, palliative care and end of life care.

The contemporary building features a flat roof and a balcony at first floor level and Kemper System’s solvent free Kemperol 2K-PUR cold liquid-applied system has been used to provide the waterproofing membrane for all areas of the roof and balconies.

The root-resistant and U/V stable waterproofing system also forms an integral part of the green roof build up installed on selected areas of the roof terraces as a feature that connects the new development with its natural surroundings.

Comments Stuart Hicks from Kemper System: “The effectiveness of the Kemperol 2K-PUR waterproofing membrane used to create the watertight barrier between the roof substrate and the green roof system is the most critically important element of the specification. The membrane is flexible enough to cope with any post build ‘settlement’, tough and durable enough to cope with the planting medium and has a sufficiently long service life to make the green roof viable.”

Comments Kevin Cawston from Cawston Roofing: “The use of areas of green roof on this very modern building has created a synergy between the care home and the grounds.

“Using the same waterproofing membrane for the green roof build up as we did for the rest of the roof made management of the installation much simpler and the planting will provide a living feature that changes with the seasons.”www.kemper-system.co.uk

The store is also part-powered by 600 solar panels - a first for Marks & Spencer.

With 1,340 free car parking spaces, extensive pedestrian and large service areas, the design of the surface water drainage scheme was a major consideration for main contractor, Caddick Limited. Over 1,700metres of Hauraton RECYFIX® drainage channel were eventually installed by ground workers Howard Civil Engineering Limited during the three month installation process.

1,500metres of RECYFIX® PLUS 100, 150 and 200 channels fitted with Class D400 ductile iron HEELSAFE gratings secured with bar and bolt locking were used in the main car park areas. The size installed depended on the areas to be drained – for example, the larger sized channels were installed in the 80metre runs so fewer outlets were needed. The paved pedestrian areas

were drained with over 200 metres of RECYFIX® PRO 100 drainage channels fitted with Hauraton’s FIBRETEC® gratings. The material PA-GF, used to make the FIBRETEC® grating, was especially developed by Hauraton; the tough, UV resistant, fibre reinforced moulding offers high stability and huge strength for its weight.

Complying with loading category Class C250 (BSEN 1433) the grating can easily take the weight of commercial delivery vehicles. The design is a real innovation as its non-corrosive material provides a visually appealing surface finish that retains its black colour. The FIBRETEC® C250 HEELSAFE grating was specifically designed by Hauraton R & D engineers to enhance the flow of water into the channel. The slots are super smooth, elliptical openings with the moulded bars having slightly raised triangular bosses along their outside edges.

As well as providing an elegant appearance, the feature ensures surface water is directed into the slots. This configuration also helps eliminate any cross-flow over the grating. The RECYFIX® PRO and PLUS channel component is made from tough, 100% recycled Polypropylene - Polyethylene (PP-PE). The channels arrive on site with the gratings factory fitted. www.drainage-projects.co.uk

Global Logistics Leader Specifies Hydraulic Dock Levellers From Stertil

Specialist loading bay equipment and industrial door manufacturer Stertil Dock & Door Products has installed a series of 11 hydraulic dock levellers for a worldwide logistics company. As a top ten global provider of supply chain solutions, the logistics company operates a UK network of strategically located ambient and temperature controlled warehousing facilities. The company’s Amber Park warehouse in South Normanton, Derbyshire occupies 200,000 sq ft and offers 21,000 pallet locations. As part of an upgrade to the site, it was decided to replace 11 outdated levellers with an installation of Stertil XP 2521 hydraulic dock levellers.

Between 60 and 80 rigid lorries and articulated vehicles with trailers are loaded and unloaded in a typical working day at the Amber Park site. These operations are undertaken safely and swiftly by the 6000kg capacity XP 2521 dock levellers which feature an ingenious

telescopic extending lip. Simple, precise positioning of this lip onto the rear of a vehicle’s deck enables loading by pallet truck right up to the rear doors thereby ensuring maximum use of available space.Although the original dock levellers had been installed by another supplier around 15 years ago when the site was built, they have been maintained for many years by Stertil Dock Products as part of an ongoing maintenance contract. The success of this relationship was a major factor in Stertil being approached to tender for the replacement levellers. www.stertil.co.uk

Trespa Sets The Right Tone For Uni Student BlockA city-centre student block for Liverpool University has been clad in more than 5000 sq m of innovative high performance laminate cladding that provides a clean-cut modern appearance while echoing the façades of nearby historic buildings.

Crown Place is a 1500-bed student accommodation project in three blocks grouped around a central courtyard. Popular with students because of its

proximity to the city centre and the University’s main teaching blocks it welcomed its first intake last September.

Drawing on a materials palette of the surrounding University buildings, Manchester-based architects Lewis and Hickey opted for Meteon® cladding panels from Trespa UK for the inner elevations of the blocks which face onto two central plazas that act as communal areas from which the buildings are accessed.

“The façades of the three blocks facing outward onto the street were to be in a GRC, reflecting the

stonework of the nearby Metropolitan Cathedral and the Reilly Building. The courtyard facades were also to be of the same tone, maximising the light reflectance to illuminate the courtyard bedrooms”, says architect Philip

Daniels. “Trespa® panels were the logical choice for the internal courtyard facades, offering a cost-effective option that maintained dimensional and aesthetic stability over time, and would weather well.”

The design of the Trespa® facades, using approximately 2000 panels, was to use irregular panel sizes with staggered joints providing a softer, more organic effect, again referencing the stonework of the university buildings. A graduation of tones, using four colours, was also selected, starting with darker panels in Mid Grey at the base of the building, and becoming progressively lighter with Silver Grey and Winter Grey and eventually White towards the roofline.

Daniels explains: “This plays on the natural distribution of light, and gives the perception of the courtyard becoming wider at the top, avoiding a ‘canyon’ effect. The panels were riveted to vertical aluminium rails and rivets were capped with colour-coordinated caps which were imperceptible from ground level once the building was complete.”

Trespa® Meteon® is a decorative, high-pressure compact laminate with an integral surface manufactured using Trespa’s unique in-house technologies that utilise dry-forming and electron beam curing. It is the company’s leading family of architectural panels for façades and exterior applications, created – as with all Trespa products - in close collaboration with architects, designers, installers, distributors and end-users.

The panels, 8mm thickness were specified for the Liverpool University project and perform exceptionally well outdoors with neither sun nor rain having any significant effect on the surface. www.trespa.com

Omnie Ground Source Heat Pumps Serve Six Bathroom Rural Redevelopment

The redevelopment of a former lock keeper’s cottage in Somerset, being replaced by a 850 square metre spacious modern family home, is making use of two ground source heat pumps from Omnie to provide not just space heating, but also hot water for the property’s six bathrooms, kitchen and utility. The site isn’t connected to mains gas and the heat pumps provide a cost effective way to provide low temperature heating without having to bring in mains gas or rely on fossil fuels or high temperature heat sources. The design of the building is very contemporary and offers large open plan areas which is ideally suited for UFH and low temperature heating. Because of the properties size/ building form and high specification of insulation, glazing the heating loads are low and therefore suited for efficient heat pump design operating at 35-40 degreesº flow temperature. This is further enhanced by a PV array, which provides electricity to the heat pump operation storing the energy in the large buffer and hot water cylinder. The architect has made good provision for a large plant room and service access to different parts of the building, this is key to integration of good heating system, which the clients are very impressed with. With five bedrooms and six bathrooms, demand for hot water is potentially high and the pair of Omnie SWC 140S ground source heat pumps are suitably sized to meet the heating and hot water loads, harvesting free warmth from pipe runs laid across an adjoining field. www.omnie.co.uk

Schöck Solution Combines Architecture With Horticulture The striking façade of this building in Berlin is the concept of Sergej Dott, a locally-based pop art painter who chose medicinal herbs to represent the building’s use as a major medical centre.

The Treptow Medical Centre, named after the district in which it is located, is a 19th century listed building and recent refurbishment work has seen the interior transformed into twelve surgeries and a pharmacy. The final flourish of the restoration activity is the addition of the pop art herbs, each one metre in diameter, up to twelve metres high and 600kgs in weight, all grouped around three sides of the building.

To incorporate them into the structural design, additional steel beams had to be installed inside the building at varying floor levels and Lorenz Linnhoff, whose engineering firm carried out the structural planning for the building comments: “The optimum solution for fastening the giant flowers to the building envelope was the Isokorb KST, which made it possible to transfer the load of the flower installation via the steel beams to the load-bearing building”.

The KST has been developed to create thermal breaks in steel structures, where the modules are used to transfer tensile forces and pressure/shear forces. With this application the product is used only for the latter purpose, as on this occasion it has to perform a structural function rather than ensure thermal partition.

Each flower is connected by two KST modules at the top of the stalk and their modular capability meant that off-site pre-fabrication was possible, helping to reduce on-site costs. Two head plates were welded to the stalks off site and another two head plates attached to the main steel structure with the KST modules bolted to them.

Then flower stalk was then lifted into position and the two plates simply bolted to the exterior connections of the KST units. The community arts and culture scene in Treptow wil benefit too, as each of the herbs is to be sponsored, with the proceeds donated to various art institutions.

Portakabin Group Awarded UK’s Largest Ever Off-Site Contract In The Education Sector – £44M Riverside Schools CampusThe London Borough of Barking and Dagenham has awarded what is believed to be the largest ever off-site contract in the education sector, to the Portakabin Group – a £44 million project to deliver an innovative three-school campus.

The 23,000sqm Riverside Schools scheme is one of the largest school projects now under construction and will provide additional places for one of the fastest-growing school-age populations in the UK. The campus will have capacity for around 2,700 children from 0-19 – integrating provision for nursery, primary, special needs, secondary, and sixth form.

The Portakabin Group is main contractor for this pioneering project. The contract has been awarded by the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham (LBBD) via the Council’s local education partnership (LEP), Thames Partnership for Learning. The project is procured by LBBD and funded by the Education Funding Agency (EFA). The architects are Surface to Air

and the three free schools on the campus will be operated by the multi-academy trust, Partnership Learning.

Constructed using a Yorkon off-site solution for the curriculum areas, the scheme will accommodate a 10-form entry secondary school, a 630-place primary school, a special educational needs (SEN) school, and a nursery. It will also offer extended provision outside school hours and for wider use at weekends and in school holidays to contribute to the local community.

Commenting on the project, Roger Leighton, Chief Executive of the multi-academy trust, Partnership Learning, said, “We have had a very good first-hand experience of the Portakabin Group’s off-site solutions as our schools currently occupy two earlier phases on a site near the planned Riverside Schools campus. We have been really impressed with the quality of the finished buildings, the speed of construction, and just how far off-site technology has now advanced.”

“The Portakabin Group makes good use of architectural design to the benefit of the users and to enhance the internal environment. As an example, our strong preference is for 75sqm classrooms which are significantly larger than the 56sqm classrooms required by the Department for Education. With careful design and planning, use of a Yorkon off-site solution gives us the flexibility to achieve this and for almost the same budget – which is a very key benefit.”

Simon Ambler, Director of the Portakabin Group, said, “We expect this project to change the face of off-site construction in the education sector. It demonstrates really well how Yorkon building solutions can be used to meet the urgent provision of school places – and for a scheme of this scale and complexity.”

“It illustrates our capabilities as a main contractor, our flexibility to deliver part of the building at an earlier stage whilst remaining on site, and whilst working to an extremely tight programme. We are absolutely delighted that this is our seventh project for the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham Council which is further evidence of the quality of our buildings and the greater certainty and value our services can deliver.”

The use of off-site construction will significantly reduce the programme time. The project has been scheduled to complete the primary and SEN facilities at an earlier stage, in time for the start of the 2016/17 academic year to meet the urgent demand for places in the Borough. The rest of the campus will be completed late Spring 2017.

The Riverside Schools scheme is being developed in the Barking Riverside regeneration area, which is close to Barking town centre and part of the Thames Gateway development. Early phases of substantial housebuilding have already been completed with further plans for 12,000 new homes increasing the need for education provision. The overall vision is for the creation of a vibrant new community with design-inspired public spaces and amenities.

Greyfriars Colchester – Hotel Of Grande Luxe

Built in the late 18th century on the site of a Franciscan Monastery, GreyFriars was an extraordinary family home with a stunning Georgian façade. After a few changes of use, it went up for sale in 2007.A period of several years followed, during which the new owner, OMC Investments Limited, sought planning

permission to convert this Grade II Listed building into a luxury hotel. A key issue to resolve was the problem of the old windows, not only causing heat loss, but admitting the ingress and egress of noise. Set to become a hotel of grand luxe, it was of paramount importance to provide the guests with a peaceful and comfortable stay.

Secondary glazing can virtually eliminate drafts trapping an insulating layer which reduces heat loss. It also has the benefit of noise reduction; Selectaglaze’s products can attain sound reductions to 45dB when fitted with an air gap of 100mm.Selectaglaze fitted over a hundred units using nine different systems. Some of the windows were curved which needed to be carefully designed and some carefully treated to allow access to some beautiful original stained glass for cleaning and maintenance. The majority of the windows were fitted with 6mm toughened glass, but in one particular area 10.8 Stadip Silence was used for noise containment to prevent disturbing people outside of the building. Marmox Multiboards Feature In Goodenough Bathroom Contract

The total refurbishment of 64 guest bathrooms within a club, located on one of London’s most fashionable garden squares, has featured the use of Multiboards, manufactured by Marmox Limited to offer an ideal backing board for wetroom environments.

In total Marmox supplied some 1000 square metres of Multiboard in the 2500 x 600 (Longboard) and 1250 x 600 (Standard board) options; at 12.5 and 6mm thickness respectively. The upgrade of the en-suite bathrooms within the Goodenough Club was completed over a 19 week period earlier this year.

The joints between the boards were covered using Marmox self-adhesive waterproof tape which enables contractors to tile directly over the top; though in

this instance the tilers opted to apply a thin skim of the adhesive across the entire surface. Marmox Multiboards are manufactured from extruded polystyrene or XPS and offer a range of positive physical characteristics in addition to being fully waterproof.

They are both light to handle and easy to cut, while still being able to carry substantial loadings if employed as part of a flooring build up. They further offer good acoustic as well as thermal insulation performance. www.marmox.co.uk

100Brett Landscaping Assistance Helps To Challenge Perception Of Space At Hayes Development

A recently constructed retail development in Hayes, West London has had its striking public access area and car park design fulfilled using a combination of high quality paving products, manufactured and supplied by Brett Landscaping.

The new development’s pathways, access and parking areas have been created using original designs by leading landscape architects, the terra firma consultancy, in a project designed to change conceptions of what a car park and public access area can typically be. A combination of paving materials from Brett Landscaping, including Piatto in Dark Granite, Silver Granite and Yellow Granite, have been installed.

“With the vast space they often occupy, car parks can be perceived as inhospitable places, so at Hayes, we wanted to create a different feel; incorporating planting and visual interest into the design and reducing the interpretation of a big car park to a more ‘human scale,’” explains Alison Galbraith, terra firma’s Associate Director. “To accomplish this, we designed a landscape whereby the main tarmacadam was ‘broken up’ using 300m² of Brett Piatto Yellow Granite around the parking bays, together with tree planting to help challenge the perception of the space. And the concept put into practice, has been highly effective.”

The hard landscaping of the development has been achieved using Brett Piatto Dark Granite (500m²) and Piatto Silver Granite (1100m²) across the public realm together with Piatto Yellow Granite (300m²), materials which have been distributed through regional merchant, EH Smith.www.brettpaving.co.uk
