The Estimates
QuestionToday my group decided to answer this question for the science fair: Who is better at estimating the unknown male or females?
The purpose of this project is to determine who is better at estimating the unknown, males or females. This is
important because we want to see if boy or girl thinking is better. We would
know who to go to if we needed an estimate.
Purpose
HypothesisOur hypothesis is that the girls will
be better estimators then
males. We believe this
because in our class girls get
better grades in math class.
Procedure
Materials
• Skittles• Snap cubes• Gram cubes• Marbles• Pencils• Jar
VariablesManipulated variable: male or female
Responding: estimate estimates
Constant- objects in jar for each trial-number of male and female estimators-size of jar
Directions1.Count the candy. Write the number
down. Keep number hidden2.Place candy in the jar.3.Have estimators estimate the same
number of candy in the jar. Record estimates.
4.Repeat steps 1-3 with snap cubes5.Repeat steps 1-3 with marble 6.Repeat steps 1-3 with pencils7.Calculate the average estimates8.Calculate the average difference
between actual and average estimates.

Average Difference Between Actual and Estimates
CONCLUSION
• Our hypothesis was incorrect. Males are better than females. The average difference between the actual and the estimate for males was 75.62. The average difference between the actual and the estimate for females was 75.94. We repeated this investigation again we would ask more people to estimate.
