Change

EU For An Ambitious

Global Agenda

Protect Nature

Protect 30% of EU land and sea

➢ Based on Natura 2000 and nationally designated areas

➢ EU wide target, take into account specific situation in MS

➢ Integrate ecological corridors to build coherent network

Strictly protect a third of these areas

➢ Covering areas of very high biodiversity value & important

for mitigation and adaptation to climate change, including all

primary and old growth forest

Restore Nature ✓ Legally binding restoration targets to be proposed in 2021

✓ No deterioration of protected habitats & species + positive trends for 30%

✓ Reversed pollinator decline

✓ Restored 25 000 km free-flowing rivers

✓ Remediated contaminated soil sites

✓ Agroecosystems: organic farming >25%; high-biodiversity landscape features >10%; pesticide

use and risk reduction by 50%, fertiliser use reduction by 20% and pollution reduction by 50%.

✓ 3 billion additional trees planted respecting ecological principles

✓ New Urban Greening Platform: the Green City Accord

✓ Halved number of Red List species threatened by Invasive Alien Species

✓ Reduced damage to seabed, bycatch

Enable Transformative Change

➢ Governance framework including

monitoring

➢ Unlocking financing

➢ Business engagement

➢ Knowledge, education

➢ Promotion of Nature-Based Solutions

• SDGs

• Green Diplomacy

• International Ocean Governance

• Trade Policy

• Climate Policy

• International cooperation

Greening urban and peri-urban areas

• Urban area doubled since 1992

• Importance of green urban spaces

• Aim: stop the loss of green urban ecosystems and

bring nature back to cities

• Call on European cities of at least 20,000 inhabitants to

develop ambitious Urban Greening Plans by end 2021

• EU Urban Greening Platform to be set up by the

Commission in 2021, under a new ‘Green City Accord’

with cities and mayors

To remember…

Next Steps

• Implementation of actions (Annex and more)

• Reaction from EP and Council, COR, EESC

• UNGA Biodiversity Summit Sept 2020

• CBD COP 15 early 2021, China
