Are pilot-scale CO2 storage projects the way forward for CCS in Europe?

In Europe, demonstration projects designed to test the feasibility of an integrated CCS chain at a large-scale, and planned for 2015, are facing major challenges which may result in significant delays or even cancellations. To ensure that CO2 storage research continues to move forward, small-scale pilot projects may provide an alternative and/or complementary solution. These would be lower cost, quicker to implement and provide a strong focus on specific topics. Typical questions addressed in our forum will be “What can we learn from pilot projects that we cannot do at larger scales?”, “What can we learn from pilot projects that can directly be applied to commercial scale implementation?” and “Should we design pilot storage projects on sites which could later become full-scale storage facilities?”.

We expect extensive discussions assessing the need and added value of small-scale pilot storage projects compared to large-scale demonstrations, the critical issues that need to be addressed, and whether goals can be achieved in time. A large number of proposed sites will be presented and discussed in terms of specific aims, with intervening panel discussions and ample opportunity for participants to express their views. Key stakeholders including regulators, EU representatives, industry and the research community will attend in order to ensure that different perspectives are aired.

Major elements of the open forum include: • Status of large-scale CCS demo projects in Europe and worldwide • R&D current status, research needs and strategy • Proposed new pilots and focus on issues addressed • Public perception and how to communicate about small pilot sites • Discussion sessions

Major elements of the knowledge sharing workshop on international cooperation include: • On-going and planned international collaboration initiatives • Key results from European projects Discussion on CCS research worldwide, filled

gaps and key issues

Who should attend: policymakers, public authorities, industrial stakeholders, regulatory bodies, NGOs, engineers and scientists, research councils,

EC representatives, Members of European Parliament, etc. Basically, anyone concerned by the geological storage of CO2

CO2GeoNet The European Network of Excellence on the Geological Storage of CO2

CO2GeoNet is the European scientific body on CO2 geological storage. It currently comprises13 public research institutes from 7 European countries, and brings together over 300researchers with the multidisciplinary expertise needed to address all aspects of CO2 storage. With activities encompassing joint research, training, scientific advice, information and com-munication, CO2GeoNet has a valuable and independent role to play in enabling the efficientand safe geological storage of CO2. CO2GeoNet was created in 2004 as a Network of Excellencesupported by the EC FP6 programme for 5 years. In 2008, the Network became a non-profitassociation under French law.Visit CO2GeoNet’s website at www.co2geonet.com

CGS EuropeThe Pan-European Coordination Action on the Geological Storage of CO2

CGS Europe is a networking project that pools together the expertise of 34 key researchinstitutes in the area of CO2 geological storage across 28 countries (24 European MemberStates and 4 Associated Countries). Funded by the EC FP7 programme, it builds upon the net-working and integration experience of CO2GeoNet with the ultimate goal of providing anindependent, scientific, pan-European platform and reference source where national,European and international experts, institutes and regulators can access the most up-to-dateresults of CO2 storage-related studies, share experiences and good practices, discuss theimplementation of regulations, identify research needs to face upcoming challenges, andbuild new projects.Visit CGS Europe’s website at www.cgseurope.net

6th CO2GeoNet Open ForumVenice, San Servolo Island, 9-11 May 2011

The CO2GeoNet Open Forum is a unique opportunity forstakeholders and major players in the CCS arena to meet andinteract directly with Europe’s largest group of researchers on CO2

geological storage.

This is all the more true this year, with the involvement of the CGSEurope project: the “Pan-European Coordination Action on theGeological Storage of CO2” that brings together the CO2GeoNetAssociation and 21 other research institutes all with CO2 storageresearch experience, thus covering 28 countries (24 EuropeanMember States plus 4 Associated Countries).

The 2011 Open Forum will offer a complete overview of CO2

storage developments in Europe at different levels:• latest scientific results and studies;• scientific investigations related to CCS demos and pilots in

Europe;• a dedicated regulatory workshop on scientific issues related

to the implementation of the European Directive on CO2

Storage.

Who will attend: Decision-makers, Public authorities,Industry, NGOs and Scientists from Europe and abroad
