Welcome From The ELC Board Chair
On behalf of The ELC Board of Directors, leadership, staff and Summer Meeting
Planning Committee, welcome to Detroit: Motown, The Motor City! I don’t think
there is one of us who has not moved to the sounds of Motown or taken a ride in one
of the cars produced by this great city.
Detroit is the largest American city situated on the border with our northern
neighbor Canada. Designated as a small French trading post at the turn of the 18th
Century, the introduction of the automobile at the beginning of the 20th Century
lead the city to experience explosive growth. The need for hundreds of thousands of
workers created The Great Migration of blacks from the South, and during the 1940s
more than 50,000 black workers settled in the city with their families.
Like many urban areas, Detroit experienced industrial and economic decline during
the 1970s as global competition, a decline in manufacturing and other factors
reduced its population and tax base. For decades the city struggled to find its footing
and is now on the way to recovering with a diverse economy that also includes
financial services, gaming and a wide range of entrepreneurial endeavors and
technology-based start-ups.
We are pleased you could join us for stimulating discussions on how black business
leaders can participate in strengthening the cities and communities where we live
and work. You will hear from experts about how to support urban revitalization and
ensure black ownership, influence and control.
Please use this opportunity to network with your fellow members, leadership and
guests. Be sure to take full advantage of the meeting agenda and our recreational
options as well. Enjoy this time we have together as you explore the city.

Dear Friends:
On behalf of the citizens of the City of Detroit, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to The Executive Leadership Council 2016 Summer General Membership Meeting. The Summer Meeting Theme - “Impact 2016: The role of business leaders of color in the revitalization of our cities.”
I am excited that you have chosen our city to host your event. As you will witness, we are on the verge of a comeback and our resurgence is evident in the new businesses, restaurants and events hosted in our city. The thrust of this collaborative meeting is to target economic development initiatives and supplier diversity programs as well as provide insight from entrepreneurs, small business owners and program administrators who will illustrate how their partnerships serve as a catalyst to provide access to capital. And equally as important, how they can serve as advisors and support systems to launch, grow and sustain black businesses in the city of Detroit.
I should also mention that during your stay, please take the time to experience Detroit and its history through all of the unique attractions our city has to offer like the Motown Historical Museum, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the historic Fox Theatre and other cultural attractions. Our international riverfront, with scenic views of our city and neighbor to the south, Windsor, Ontario, is also a must see attraction.
Again, I welcome you on behalf of the citizens of Detroit and I applaud the efforts of the organizers, volunteers and participants for their positive contribution towards this event.

This special event will feature a board readiness coaching session led by the Heidrick & Struggles Board Practice Group who will offer helpful tips and advice to cohort members for how to become and remain “board ready.” The event will also feature a panel discussion with Huron Capital’s senior leadership team. The panel will provide insights for navigating the world of private equity and seeking leadership opportunities on portfolio company boards.

Alicia Boler-Davis
Since November 2014, Alicia Boler-Davis leads GM’s global efforts to provide customers with the best overall service and experience in the industry, as well as market-leading connectivity and infotainment products and services. Her scope includes GM’s nearly 20-year-old
OnStar safety, security and services brand, which recently passed 1 billion customer interactions. She also leads GM’s Urban Active team, which is developing solutions to capitalize on the future of personal mobility, including car sharing. She is a member of the Executive Leadership Team and reports to GM CEO Mary Barra.
In February 2012, Boler-Davis was named U.S. vice president, Customer Experience. Later that year, her role was expanded to vice president, Global Quality and U.S. Customer Experience. Under her leadership, GM fundamentally redefined customer care and its interaction with customers through social media channels and Customer Engagement Centers.
Boler-Davis began her GM career in 1994 as a manufacturing engineer at the Midsize/Luxury Car Division in Warren, Mich. During her career, she has held positions in Manufacturing, Engineering and Product Development, including becoming the first African-American woman to be a plant manager at a GM vehicle manufacturing plant. She also served as a vehicle line executive and chief engineer.
Numerous organizations have recognized Boler-Davis for her professional accomplishments and community service. Fortune magazine named her as one of the 10 most powerful women in the automotive industry, in 2013.
Boler-Davis has a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Northwestern University and a master’s degree in engineering science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Speaker Biographies
Michael E. Duggan
Michael Edward "Mike" Duggan is mayor of Detroit, Michigan. He is an attorney, prosecutor, and businessman. He was elected mayor in 2013, after receiving 52% of the primary vote as a write-in candidate and 55% of the vote in the mayoral run-off in November 2013. He ran
with the campaign slogan "Every neighborhood has a future" and on a platform of financial turnaround, crime reduction and economic development.
Beginning in 2004, Duggan was president and CEO of the Detroit Medical Center (DMC). He was in this position when the formerly nonprofit DMC was sold to publicly traded Vanguard Health Systems in 2010.
Duggan graduated from Detroit Catholic Central High School. He received a bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan in 1980, followed by a J.D. degree from its law school in 1983. A Democrat, Duggan was an appointed and elected official in Wayne County, Michigan, beginning in 1986 as Wayne County's assistant corporation counsel. He was deputy County Executive from 1987 to 2001 under Edward H. McNamara and was elected prosecutor in 2000.
Linda Forte
Linda D. Forte is senior vice president of Business Affairs and Chief Diversity Officer for Comerica Incorporated and member of Comerica’s senior leadership team. She is responsible for defining and driving business strategies that establish Comerica as a leader in diversity and work life practices and has achieved national
recognition for the bank’s diversity efforts. Forte also is responsible for the Comerica Charitable Foundation, Corporate Contributions and Civic Affairs, overseeing corporate giving and community involvement programs.

On behalf of the citizens of the City of Detroit, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to The Executive Leadership Council 2016 Summer General Membership Meeting. The Summer Meeting Theme - “Impact 2016: The role of business leaders of color in the revitalization of our cities.”
I am excited that you have chosen our city to host your event. As you will witness, we are on the verge of a comeback and our resurgence is evident in the new businesses, restaurants and events hosted in our city. The thrust of this collaborative meeting is to target economic development initiatives and supplier diversity programs as well as provide insight from entrepreneurs, small business owners and program administrators who will illustrate how their partnerships serve as a catalyst to provide access to capital. And equally as important, how they can serve as advisors and support systems to launch, grow and sustain black businesses in the city of Detroit.
I should also mention that during your stay, please take the time to experience Detroit and its history through all of the unique attractions our city has to offer like the Motown Historical Museum, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the historic Fox Theatre and other cultural attractions. Our international riverfront, with scenic views of our city and neighbor to the south, Windsor, Ontario, is also a must see attraction.
Again, I welcome you on behalf of the citizens of Detroit and I applaud the efforts of the organizers, volunteers and participants for their positive contribution towards this event.

Rodrick Miller
Rodrick Miller is a results-oriented leader with over 10 years of experience in economic development, strategic planning, trade and foreign investment, and project finance. His skills as a negotiator, policy expert, and corporate strategist have been honed in over 10 countries.
Currently, Miller is serving as President & CEO of the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation (DEGC). The DEGC is a private, nonprofit corporation devoted exclusively to supporting Detroit’s economic development by providing technical, financial, negotiation, and development assistance to the City and the private sector business community. Previously, Miller served as the founding president and CEO of the New Orleans Business Alliance (NOLABA), the official economic development organization responsible for ensuring the long-term economic vitality and driving job growth for the City of New Orleans. Prior to that position, Miller served as the Executive Vice President of the Baton Rouge Area Chamber where he managed day-to-day operations, developed strategic initiatives, and helped deliver on the firm’s $20M capital campaign.
Before moving to Louisiana, Miller was Vice President of International Economic Development for the Greater Phoenix Economic Council (GPEC) where he managed international development activities, which included foreign direct investment attraction and increasing the region’s international competitiveness.
Miller holds a Master of Public Policy from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government and a Bachelor of Science degree in international business from St. Augustine’s College. He also gained a Graduate Diploma in Finance from the Monterrey Institute of Technology (ITESM) in Mexico while completing a Fulbright Fellowship. He enjoys playing the piano, reading, and spending time with his son. Miller is fluent in Spanish and proficient in Portuguese.
Sherwin Prior
Sherwin Prior was named Managing Director, General Motors Ventures, LLC, effective September 1, 2010. Before this appointment, he worked on the micro-cap to mid-cap growth platform for NorthPointe Capital, LLC in Troy, Michigan. Sherwin also worked for Morgan Stanley Investment
Management in New York as a Senior Associate where he was responsible for investments in the industrials and consumer discretionary sectors of the economy.
His previous experience also includes General Motors Retail Holdings, where he was a Financial Acquisitions Analyst responsible for the valuation of dealerships; JP Morgan Chase where he was a Commercial Credit Analyst in the Asset-Based Lending Group; and Stout Risius Ross Valuation Consultants where he was responsible for appraising middle-market companies and real estate.
He received a bachelor of business administration degree in finance from Eastern Michigan University and his master of business administration from the University of Michigan.
Michelle Sourie Robinson
Michelle Sourie Robinson is president and CEO of the Michigan Minority Supplier Development Council (MMSDC). Robinson brings a wealth of experience, having spent thirteen years at Home Depot where she created their first supplier diversity department and supporting strategy, before founding Give & Receive, a non-
profit organization that connects individuals and corporations to various charities.
In her role at Home Depot, Michelle also led the varied functions in support of the company's multi-billion dollar Government Services Administration contract. As she and her team drove this strategic business focus, her primary responsibilities included the sourcing and development of women-owned, minority-owned and small businesses, the training and support of over 400 product and service buyers, as well as multi-level outreach activities on behalf of the entire Home Depot enterprise.

Faye Nelson
Faye Nelson is vice president, DTE Energy and Board Chair & President of DTE Energy Foundation. DTE Energy (NYSE: DTE) is a Detroit-based diversified energy company involved in the development and management of energy-related businesses and services nationwide. DTE Energy’s operating units include an electric
utility serving 2.1 million customers in Southeastern Michigan and a natural gas utility serving 1.2 million customers in Michigan. The company’s portfolio also includes non-utility energy businesses focused on power and industrial projects, midstream services and energy trading.
Nelson leads the public affairs group for DTE Energy and the DTE Energy Foundation. In this role, she is responsible for civic and community related initiatives and investments throughout the DTE service area, including the coordination of volunteer efforts by DTE employees. Nelson is also charged with leading all activities of the DTE Energy Foundation, a separate philanthropic organization funded by DTE Energy. She formerly served as president and CEO of the non-profit Detroit RiverFront Conservancy, the organization charged with developing the public space on the Detroit riverfront. Prior to joining the Conservancy, Nelson served as vice president, Governmental Affairs for Wayne State University, where she led the development of the Wayne State University Research and Technology Park, now known as “Tech Town.”
Nelson earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Mercy College of Detroit and a law degree from the University of Detroit School of Law. She serves on the board of directors for Compuware Corporation, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Henry Ford Health System and Health Network Board, Midtown Detroit, Inc., and the Parade Company. Tonya Allen
Tonya Allen, a serial “idea-preneur,” serves as the Skillman Foundation’s president & chief executive officer. In her current role, Allen aligns the complexities of education reform, urban revitalization and public policy, so that these sometimes divergent areas of work come together to improve the well-being of Detroit’s
children. She serves as the architect of the 10-year, $100 million Good Neighborhoods program. She orchestrated the development of a $200-million, citywide education reform organization called Excellent Schools Detroit, and a high-school improvement strategy has resulted in 15 new college-preparatory high schools.
Before joining the Skillman Foundation in 2004, Allen worked as a program officer for both the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation and the Thompson-McCully Foundation. She founded and was the executive director of Detroit Parent Network, a parent membership organization dedicated to improving educational options for children, and led the Annie E. Casey Foundation’s Rebuilding Communities Initiative in Detroit.
She holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology and masters’ degrees in social work and public health, all from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. She serves on numerous boards and committees, both local and national, including The Funders Network for Smart Growth, Grantmakers of Children, Youth and Families, Council of Michigan Foundations and Association of Black Foundation Executives.
She’s married to husband, Louis, and has three daughters, Phylicia, Brianna and Alanna. Together, the couple owns and operates a Christian entertainment company, Highly Favored Productions.

Roderick Gillum
Roderick D. Gillum is a Principal in the Detroit, Michigan, office of Jackson Lewis P.C. His practice concentrates on corporate strategies related to crisis management, labor relations, and legal risk avoidance, including managing strategic labor and personnel planning in the context of workforce restructurings, class actions, and corporate reorganizations.
Prior to joining Jackson Lewis, Mr. Gillum was a senior member of the General Motors Company (GM) Legal Staff, where he rose to become Secretary to the GM Board of Directors, and, later, Vice President, Corporate Responsibility & Diversity. In this dual role, Mr. Gillum was at the forefront of the company’s diversity strategies relative to both internal human resources as well as external relations with vendors, minority dealers, and national civil rights and political leaders. Previously, Mr. Gillum was the Chief Personnel, Benefits and Labor Attorney at GM’s Legal Staff, where he was responsible for all personnel, health care, benefit plans, labor relations and workers’ compensation legal matters, and he oversaw a combined litigation and workers’ compensation budget in excess of $15 million.
Prior to his role as Chief Personnel, Benefits and Labor Attorney, Mr. Gillum was Vice President, General Counsel, and Secretary for GM’s Saturn Corporation. Before joining GM, Mr. Gillum was an Attorney with Region 7 (Detroit, MI) of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).
Wendy Lewis Jackson
Wendy Lewis Jackson is interim co-managing director for the Detroit Program. She co-leads The Kresge Foundation’s efforts to revitalize Detroit and to strengthen its social and economic fabric. Her work supports organizations providing economic opportunity for low-income people and addresses the needs of vulnerable children and families.
Prior to joining Kresge in 2008, Wendy was a program director for Children and Family Initiatives and executive director for education initiatives at the Grand Rapids Community Foundation in Grand Rapids, Mich. She taught at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Mich., and has co-authored and assisted in the publication of several reports and publications that address community needs and problem solving.

Hiram Jackson
Entrepreneur and publisher Hiram E. Jackson is Chief Executive Officer of Real Times Media and publisher of the Michigan Chronicle. In 2003, Jackson became part of an ownership group that purchased the Michigan Chronicle and several other newspapers from Chicago-based Sengstacke Enterprises Inc., which
resulted in the formation of the multi-media company, Real Times Media, LLC.
Jackson began his career in a management training program at Ford Motor Company and worked in the corporation’s labor relations department. He resigned from Ford in the early 1990s and co-founded New Center Collision, which marketed auto body repairs to corporate fleets. In 1994, Jackson sold his share of New Center Collision and used the funds to buy DMC Technologies, Inc., a low-voltage cabling and wiring firm, where he served as chairman and chief executive officer. He then established GlobalView Technologies, LLC and Genesis Energy Solutions in 1998, and purchased the Wixom, Michigan-based Clover Technologies, Inc. in 2001.
Jackson has served on several Detroit area boards including the Detroit Zoological Society, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, First Independence Bank CDC, the Detroit Branch of the NAACP, and the Boys and Girls Club of Southeastern Michigan. He is a member of Governor Rick Snyder’s Office of Urban and Metropolitan Initiatives Advisory Group, and was elected to the board of directors of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) in 2013.
Jackson received his B.S. degree in industrial and labor relations from Cornell University in 1987.
James Lowry
James H. Lowry is President of his own private consulting firm, James H. Lowry & Associates and currently a Senior Advisor for The Boston Consulting Group (BCG). Lowry is a nationally recognized workforce and supplier diversity expert and pioneer. He encapsulates his 30 plus years of experience in the field of minority
business development in his new book, Minority Business Success: Refocusing on the American Dream, co-authored with Leonard Greenhalgh of Amos Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College for Stanford University Press. In his previous role as BCG’s Senior Vice President and Global Diversity Director, Lowry led the BCG’s workforce diversity, ethnic marketing and minority business development consulting practice. Prior to joining BCG in 2000, Lowry had his own firm, James H. Lowry & Associates (JHLA), which was established in 1975. In 1978, JHLA prepared the first major study on minority business enterprise development for the U.S. Department of Commerce entitled, New Strategy for Minority Business. It was the precursor to the creation of the Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA). In 1980, he prepared another study for the Department of Commerce entitled Minority Business in the 80’s. Lowry was the first African-American to join McKinsey & Company in 1968. He rose to Senior Associate for McKinsey & Company, serving in London, New York, Washington, D.C., Chicago and Dar-es-Salam, Tanzania. In 1972, he assisted in the development of a semi-private sector strategy for the Republic of Tanzania. He began his career in various positions with the U.S. Peace Corps including Associate Director in Lima, Peru.
He is a graduate of Grinnell College (BA), University of Pittsburgh (MA) and Harvard Business School (PMD).
Quintin E. Primo III
Mr. Primo serves as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Capri Investment Group, a group of affiliated companies providing real estate investment management services globally to pension fund and other institutional investors. Active in the real estate industry for over 30
years, he has challenged conventional wisdom in developing new markets for investment. Under his leadership Capri was an early investor in US institutional property markets and is now expanding internationally in the emerging regions of Africa, India and the Middle East. He is co-chairman of the Primo Center for Women and Children, was founding chairman of the Chicago Alliance to End Homelessness, and

John Rhea
John is a proven leader in both the private and public sectors. Possessing a 25-year track record, John has worked in a range of industries, including consumer goods, financial services, and real estate, consistently demonstrating an ability to increase revenues; recruit and build teams; lead organizational change and
transformation efforts; and align strategy with operational execution.
John is currently Senior Advisor to The Boston Consulting Group and Founder and Managing Partner of RHEAL Capital Management, LLC, a real estate investment and development firm specializing in multifamily rental housing and mixed-use development. John also serves on the board of directors and chairs the audit committee at Invitation Homes (a Blackstone portfolio company), which owns and manages 48,000 single family rental homes across the United States. From mid 2009 to early 2014, John served as a senior appointee of New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, advising on housing policy and economic development initiatives. As Chairman & CEO of the New York City Housing Authority, John led 11,700 employees and managed a $3.0 billion annual operating budget and a $2.5 billion capital program to provide a range of services to 650,000 tenants.
Prior to the Bloomberg Administration, John was a managing director and group head at both Barclays Capital and JPMorgan Chase & Co. advising on more than $100 billion of transactions. John also worked at PepsiCo, Inc. and began his career in the public finance industry.
John is currently a director of Red Cross Greater New York and University of Detroit Jesuit High School. He is the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including being named 100 Most Powerful People in New York Real Estate and 75 Most Powerful Blacks on Wall Street. John is a graduate of Wesleyan University and received his MBA from the Harvard Business School.
Geri Thomas
Geri Thomas is the Principal of GPT Consultants. The firm delivers thought leadership and strategic insights on diversity and inclusion programs and practices that provide a recognized advantage in the marketplace.
In 2016 after 46 years, Thomas retired from Bank of America where she
was the Chief Diversity Officer and Georgia State President. She served as the chief strategist and leader for diversity and inclusion globally and reported to the Chief Executive Officer. Under her leadership Bank of America was recognized as one of the leading firms in diversity and inclusion. She received the prestigious Firestarter Award from Re-gender in 2014 for her work in gender equality.
As Georgia President, Thomas was responsible for growing market share and delivering the full power of Bank of America to individuals, companies and institutional investors. She also oversaw the corporate social responsibility strategy in Georgia, including philanthropic grants and community development lending and investing.
Thomas serves as a director of the Executive Leadership Council and is a trustee of the Woodruff Arts Center and the Georgia State University Foundation, where she was named a distinguished alumni.

the city of Detroit. Prior to joining Quantum Reach, John was a Fortune 100 senior executive, overseeing P&L units up to $5 billion in revenue for Aetna and UNUM Corporation.
With over 25 years in the healthcare industry, John’s experience also entails international exposure while serving as Head of a Canadian company based in Toronto for five years. Brian DemkowiczBrian is the managing partner & co-founder of Huron and a member of the firm’s Investment Committee. He is responsible for leading and managing the firm.
Brian has extensive experience in executing middle-market acquisitions, recapitalizations, restructurings,
growth financings, and divestitures, closing over 100 transactions valued at over $1.0 billion. Brian began his private equity career at Heller Equity Capital Corporation, the private equity arm of Heller Financial (now GE Capital), where he was responsible for sourcing, closing and managing middle-market buyout transactions as well as operational restructurings. In 1996, Brian left to pursue transactions in a more entrepreneurial setting utilizing an operational approach, establishing Huron in 1999.
He earned a B.S. in Accounting from Purdue University and an M.B.A. from the J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University. He serves on the boards of numerous Huron portfolio companies, as well as various industry, civic, educational and charitable organizations.
Brian is an avid guitar player and once met George Harrison in an airport lounge. His experience in assessing and managing risk helped him survive bungee jumping in New Zealand and running with the bulls in Spain.
John HigginsJohn joined Huron at its inception and is responsible for sourcing, evaluating, executing and managing investments made by the firm. John is a member of the firm’s Investment Committee.
His experience includes guiding privately-held middle market businesses through sale, buyout, recapitalization, strategic alliance, and
debt and equity financing transactions in North America and Europe. Prior to Huron, John was an investment banker with P&M Corporate Finance, LLC, a boutique firm specializing in buyouts, and Vector Securities International, Inc., a full service investment bank specializing in the medical device, biotechnology and healthcare information technology arenas.
He earned a B.B.A. and a Masters of Accounting from the University of Michigan. He currently serves as a Director of Ronnoco Coffee, LeadingResponse, Drake Automotive Group, Dynamic Dental Partners, Earnest Bros. Logistics, Spring & Sprout, and Six Month Smiles.
John is an avid skier and Michigan football fan. He has attended at least one home game every year since 1977. He also finished his high school basketball career shooting 100% from the three-point line.
David KowalWith over 25 years of food and beverage (and particularly coffee) experience, David is a key part of the Ronnoco team.
David currently serves as the President of Champion Foods – an Ilitch Holdings Company. Champion Foods is a manufacturer of both branded
and private label products headquartered in New Boston, Michigan. Prior to Champion Foods, David was President and Chief Executive Officer of Distant Lands Coffee Company, a private equity backed and vertically integrated specialty coffee company in Washington. Prior to Distant Lands, David served as President of Dawn Food Products. Prior to that role, David held several leadership positions in management, operations and sales & marketing for Dawn Foods and The Pillsbury Company.
He earned a Master of Management from the J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University and a B.A. from the University of Michigan. He serves as a Director of Ronnoco Coffee.
David is an avid 'beer league' hockey player. He has played in leagues everywhere he lived which includes places like Chicago, Minneapolis, Seattle, England and Michigan.
