The exercise session

There are three parts to an exercise session:

• Warm-up, 5-10 minutes — prepares the body mentally and physically for exercise

• Main activity, at least 35 minutes — improves fitness, skills or match performance

• Cool down, 5-10 minutes — gradually returns the body to its resting state to avoid muscle soreness

Why warm up?

• By warming up, the body systems, muscles and joints gradually become used to working harder

• This gradual increase of stress on the body reduces the risk of injury

• The pulse and body temperature are also gradually raised to nearer the work rate

• Concentrating on the warm-up focuses the mind and can lead to an advantage over the opposition by producing a better start to a match

• It increases blood flow to the muscles and removes stiffness
