OF THE

ROYAL MANCHESTER INSTITUTION,

1839.

MODERN ARTISTS.

" When a critic examines a work of any of the masters in poetry or painting, he may sometimes examine it by an idea of perfection in his own mind, which neither that nor any other human work will ever come up to; and as long as he compares it with this standard, he can see nothing in it hut faults and imperfections. But when he comes to consider the rank which it ought to hold among other works of the same kind, he necessarily compares it with a very different standard,—the common degree of excellence which is usually attained in this particular art; and when he judges of it by this new measure, it may often appeal' to deserve the highest applause "

DR. ADAM SMITH;—THEORY OF MORAL SENTIMENTS.

In the front of the picture, in a dark dress, stands Ken- of Fawdownside, who levelled a pistol at the Queen. On Kerr's right is Patrick Murray, of Tibbermuir, dragging Eizzio by the cloak from the apartment, towards the door of which Morton points with his sword, while Lord Lindsay draws back the green curtain. Behind the torch-bearer is the Master of Ruthven, and near him Lord Ruthven in complete armour. George Douglas grasps the prostrate Rizzio by the arm, while the Queen is held by Lord Darnley, at whose back stands the Countess of Argyll and Mary Seaton. Behind the ladies, a soldier marks the secret passage by which the conspirators entered the Queen's apartments.

" Near yonder copse, where once the garden smil'd, And still where many a garden flow'r grows wild; There where a few torn shrubs the place disclose, The village preacher"s modest mansion rose. A man he was to all the country dear, And passing rich with forty pounds a year, Remote from towns he ran his godly race, Nor e'er had chang'd, nor wish'd to change his place ; Unpractis'd he to fawn or seek for power, By doctrines fashion'd to the varying hour, For other aims his heart had learn'd to prize, More skill'd to raise the wretched than to rise. His house was known to all the vagrant train, He chid their wand'rings, but reliev'd their pain."

340 Queen Berengaria entreating Richard Coeur de Lion for the Life of Sir Keneth, of Scotland A. Perigal " Berengaria rushed at once to the side of Richard's couch, dropped on her knees, flung her mantle from her shoulder, shewing, as they hung down at their full length, her heautiful golden tresses : she seized upon the right hand of the king, &c. ' Send away that man—his looks kill me'.' muttered Berengaria.—' Begone, Sirrah!' said Richard. * What waitest thou for—art thou fit to look on these ladies?'—'Your highness's pleasure, touching the head,' said the man.—'Out with thee, dog!' answered Richard, ' a Christian burial.'
