m. carucci: Planning and design have never been very close to me.nevertheless, ever since i’ve been a farmer, i’ve discovered that you can’t do much goodwith the earth without good planning skills. i don’t like planning, though whether ilike it or not i have to do it more often now: starting with my cascina Barbàn project, from the effective design stage of the farm to the planning of summer and winter crops, which is different every year. aside from this, i try my best to intensely live in thepresent, today, now. We are used to continuously thinking about the future, but we havelost the ability to understand and perceive what is happening today.
f. iacometti: Ko.Ji.Ku. also played a role in your private lives, acting as a conduitfor friendships, external collaborations, trips and even romances. In your career, to what extentdoes being an artist affect your private life, either positively or negatively, and vice versa, how much influence does your private life have on your artistic work?
e. stocker: While i write these replies, my newborn son is sleeping next tome, and i ask myself how long he will sleep for and whether i’ll be able to reply to allthe questions before he wakes up. this is the real structure: i already like the idea thatmy son will create a disturbance in my life (perhaps i’m too methodical).
it is very important to me to have a method - and this is true both of my workinglife and private life - however, it should allow for both structure and non-structure: the logicaland the illogical. this mental procedure is very close to my way of thinking about aesthetics:a coexistence of predictable elements with other unpredictable ones, a method that includesa hint of a paradox.
Wabi: Private lives, the context of an art collective and the dynamics within the grouphave a clear effect on our ideas, our expressive approach and our involvement in the designand creation of the works. our work is inspired by various different kinds of very humanlearning experiences: it is life itself that offers us an infinite range of stimuli and theopportunity to express ourselves without formal restrictions. the artistic experience influencesour lives in that it requires a constant investment in terms of time and personal engagement, but above all because it is a continuous process of dialogue and growth.
m. carucci: i don’t think one can make a distinction between private life andartistic life. i feel i am a farmer and an artist at the same time. i work the land whilstthinking about a piece of writing or a song. it is not right to make distinctions: an artistis an artist even when he is brushing his teeth. di un semplice metronomo contrapponeva iltempo della vita dell’uomo a quello della musicaa suggerire diverse possibilità di vivere e in-tendere il tempo, non solo misurandolo e in-seguendolo freneticamente, ma contemplan-dolo nella sua relatività.
jacopo mazzonelli’s solo exhibition launched the col-
laboration between ko.ji.ku. and the galleria studio
44 in genoa. the trentino artist draws inspiration from
the fusion of art and music. the return to the primitive,
the prototypal, the primary model, as suggested by
the exhibition’s title, was reflected in the pure elemental
forms - triangles, circles and squares - created by
plays of light and shade cleverly orchestrated by the
artist to provide the entire project with an environmental
and installational dimension.
in the half-light, the visitor was invited to follow a
route divided into five sections and dedicated to
five musical instruments: in Pavane for a dead
child, a spinet - a musical instrument from the 17th
century – transformed into a kind of coffin, evoked
strong emotional reactions; in Vexations pistol car-
tridges replaced musical notes in an ironic reference
to erik satie’s composition of 1893, the first minimalist
piece of music; in Etim, an anagram of ‘time’, a
bow stripped of its function marked an abstract
time; in Diapason an oversized instrument made of
heavy metal was leaned against a wall under a beam
of light; in the video 40.208 the double projection
of a simple metronome compared musical time to
time as measured by a human lifespan, suggesting
various ways of experiencing and thinking about
time, not just by measuring it and frenetically chasing
it, but by contemplating it relatively.

this exhibition brought together seventy three pho-
tographs taken by twenty three different photographers
aged between 18 and 35. they were selected via a na-
tional competition. the theme of the exhibition was
expressed in its title, borrowed from the renowned
film by marco ferreri The Grande Bouffe (1973). the
aim was to stimulate reflection on the problems con-
nected with consumer culture, refuse and waste and
the possibility of transforming waste into a bio-com-
patible energy resource to combat the inexorable self
destruction that takes place in the film. the photographs
on show composed an articulate and varied picture
of contemporary consumer society. at the same time
they also started an open and proactive debate that
encouraged dialogue and criticism: they were not
just simple records, but instead condemnations of
illegal social, building and environmental practices as
well as proposals for solutions interpreted and driven
by different languages and themes.
the initiative was supported by a scientific committee
composed of several lecturers from the university
of genoa (franco sborgi, leo lecci, elisabetta Papone
and Paola valenti) and was set up with the support
of the archivio d’arte contemporanea (adac)
(archive of contemporary art) of the university of
genoa, the g.a.i. (giovani artisti italiani - young
italian artists) and the civic museums. it was also
made possible thanks to the fundamental contri-
bution of sponsors: ansaldo energia (main sponsor),
Publifoto (technical sponsor), erga edizioni (editor
of the catalogue). the exhibition was housed in
three prestigious public exhibition spaces in liguria
- the Palazzo rosso in genoa, the Palazzina delle
arti in la spezia and the castello della lucertola in
apricale - and was accompanied by a catalogue,
which was divided into seven themes: places, in-
dustrial archaeology, society, things, metaphors,
scraps, refuse and waste and energy resources.
the photographs are currently stored in the Pho-
tographic archive of Palazzo rosso.

event in genoa that opens the doors of the historic
Palazzi dei rolli to the public, ko.ji.ku. introduced
rossoscuro - formed of designers ilaria bassoli (1981)
and marco merulla (1983) - and their work New York
Symphony: specially created for the atrium of Palazzo
giorgio centurione. the installation aimed to evoke
the skyline of new york by arranging nine cardboard
lamps of different heights within the space. the plays
of light created in this way gave life to an imaginary
symphony evoked by the city, which was received in a
kind of suspended silence. the lamp - according to
rossoscuro - is a reflection on “the intimacy of our
homes and the way in which people inhabit the city”.
the installation was made possible thanks to the

the second exhibition held at the galleria studio 44
brought together nine illustrators who were asked
to graphically interpret the ironic and biting short
story, L’uomo che teneva il parcheggio by filippo
balestra. marika marini used layers of coloured
paper to illustrate eight episodes, positioning the
paper around the outline of a tree created using
the same technique; valeria salandin summarised
the story into two panels characterised by curious
protruding details and roberto ferreccio translated
the essence of the narrative into a sequence of
dials. elena di Palma’s detailed and simplified scenes
were inspired by the black and white films of buster
keaton and the two-tone figurative flashes by ilaria
demonti created an excellent counterpoint for
Pietro nicolaucich’s bright, colourful and lively
forms and chiara tassinari’s soft pastel works. lastly,
next to the rigid lines of sissi magnani’s figures
sewn onto canvas, morof interpreted the story in
his own strongly expressive language. the illustrations
were complemented by a live reading of the story
by theatre performer milena lo giudice.

small black nails applied onto painted white panels,
which were then hung on the longest walls in the
space. black cotton thread was then attached to
these nails to connect the letters from one wall to
the other. the resulting geometric projections in
the space created plays of fullness and emptiness.
it was however the presence of the viewer that
formed the central element of the work: only with
his physical and mental interaction could the work
be considered as complete. Whilst this type of in-
teraction was experimented with here for the first
time by the artist, the installation conceived especially
for the space adjoining the gallery, the tunnel, was
more in line with the artist’s usual operating meth-
ods: a completely white environment was ideally
crossed by orthogonal grids that were only visible
in segments due to the presence of small pieces of
wood painted black. the equilibrium of the lines,
which were intentionally interrupted, challenged
the viewer’s perception of the work. the design
stage and the artist’s ideational process were also
presented to the public via several preparatory
sketches of the installations.

to inaugurate the 2010-2011 art season on the oc-
casion of start, the group opening of all art galleries
in genoa, ko.ji.ku. decided to host the internationally
renowned artist esther stocker, for her first exhibition
in genoa and her third in italy. the title of the exhi-
bition makes reference to maurice blanchot’s essay
The essential solitude (in L’Espace littéraire (The
Space of Literature), 1955), in which he states
that the author/artist detaches himself from his
work at the moment he conceives of it, precipitating
himself into a condition of absolute solitude that
compels him to begin a new piece of work, in an
infinite process of “commencement”. taking this
concept, the artist created an installation with the
same title in the largest space in the gallery: the
phrase La solitudine dell’opera (the solitude of
the work) was transcribed, letter by letter, using

Wabi (Working against building ignorance) is a collective
formed of five architecture students and graduates
united by a strong ideological intent: the struggle
against “ignorant” building and the development of
architecture based on quality. the exhibition, which
clearly outlined their beliefs, was divided into two sec-
tions: the first section involved a reflection on and re-
reading of Le città invisibili (the invisible cities) by
italo calvino in the form of fifty five plaster tiles made
using the silt-cast, technique, a procedure that makes
use of natural materials such as earth, wood, and
common objects, allowing for reduced manufacturing
costs and no environmental impact. the tiles created
an abstract narrative in which the text was translated
into new iconic symbols.
the second section offered an imaginary vision of the
future. the installation was formed of a room filled
with various objects, furniture and furnishings that
were completely white and anonymous containing
digitally processed postcards. these were images of
monuments and squares from some of the most fa-
mous sites in the world (the great Wall of china,
Piazza san Pietro in rome, the costa smeralda, the taj
mahal, bora bora, amsterdam, london, stonehenge,
etc.). though still recognisable, they were given an
unusual appearance that could be traced back to hy-
pothetical climatic, faunal and floral changes. these
postcards from the future aimed to act as a warning
of the importance of sustainable architecture and
stimulate awareness of environmental issues: “famous
and representative places become - according to
Wabi - images of a future that is not apocalyptic but
just different. other technologies, other resources,
other ideas. new and, why not, old. for better or for
worse it is our needs, our desires and our potential
that model our space, our behaviour and our rela-
tionships”.
the real and the imaginary, the material and the im-
material, become the extremes with which Wabi ex-
presses the concepts underlying their work: respect
for and interaction with the environment, poetic con-
cepts as part of architectural design and the responsible
development of urban areas and the landscape.
on the opening night of the exhibition theatre
performer milena lo giudice read several excerpts
from calvino’s book.

the theme the photographers invited to take
part in this group exhibition were asked to reflect
on was taken from the essay by the californian
anthropologist jared diamond Guns, germs and
steel. A brief history of the last thirteen thou-
sand years (1997), which uses a brief excursus of
the history of mankind to explore the reasons
behind progress and the formation of more ad-
vanced civilisations in europe and north america
with respect to those in africa or australia. the
conclusion the american anthropologist arrives
at is that geographical, ecological and territorial
differences are responsible for the greater or
lesser progress of any given population, thus de-
termining its history.
using this concept as a starting point, the exhibition
reflected on the impact of habitat (town, work, en-
counters, experiences), on the construction of peo-
ples’ personalities and characters. if the concept is
true, if the environment forms the individual, this
raises several questions: in which specific way does
the “h factor” - the habitat - influence each one of
us? to what extent does the environment form
the individual? does the individual not also mould
his environment and profoundly affect that which
surrounds him? the photographs made especially
for this exhibition project attempted to answer
these questions.

in tajikistan. once they had crossed the finish line,
the proceeds from the sale of the team’s equipment
(including the car) and the sum raised before and
during the trip was given to sworde-teppa, an as-
sociation that provides aid to the country’s poorest
children. the exhibition presented the most signif-
icant photographs taken during the adventurous
trip: landscapes, encounters, stories and culture,
with commentaries by Pierdomenico baccalario.
the title Photostan, which means “the place of
photos”, referred to the countries that hosted the
roof of the World rally, many of which have the
suffix “stan”, “place”, in their names. the theme of
the exhibition was connected with the experience
of the trip as a process of discovery and the en-
richment derived from an encounter with “the
other”, as well as a reflection on personal and
cultural identity.

Trrr was alessandro sciaraffa’s first exhibition in
genoa and saw the artist create a site specific
project in which objects, drawings and sounds gave
life to an unusual sonorous dialogue centred on
the sound of spinning tops in movement and
evoked by the exhibition’s onomatopoeic title.
When preparing for this project sciaraffa attached
graphite points to spinning tops in his studio and
let them spin over paper and metal surfaces. the
artist then associated the resulting marks with
sounds - recorded previously - produced by the
spinning tops in contact with the same surfaces.
during the exhibition these sounds, played in loops
on speakers and subwoofers, reactivated the “musical
score” transcribed into the drawings on the gallery
walls to create a kind of “random symphony”.

this installation was formed of bottles of different
shapes and colours, filled to different heights with sea
water. next to these, several hair dryers were switched
on by light sensors as visitors walked past them, chan-
nelling the hot air into the bottle necks and generating
- based on the different bottle widths and water
levels - different and alternating melodic tones. the
soundscape was completed by a light aroma of
seawater generated by heating the water. enveloping
the spectator in an alchemy of sensations, the sound
amplified the perception of the water’s change of
state, creating a personal and poetic interpretation of
a sea breeze. the fulcrum of the turin-based artist’s
work is the study of energy and the forms in which it
manifests, and the process of the water’s change of
state becomes just a part of a change that affects the
entire cosmos, reality in a constant state of meta-
morphosis. the piece cannot therefore freeze the
moment, time, the future, in an attempt to make it
eternal or immortal, but it must instead become part
of the flow of life: “we – says sciaraffa - are able to
measure changes in things in order to relate them to
time. however, time is an abstraction that we arrive at
exactly by observing change”.
