Dear Friends,

On behalf of the Greater Newport Area Chamber, welcome to our scenic Northeast corner

of Washington and the western-most point of the Idaho Panhandle. We invite you to

explore the friendly communities of Newport, Oldtown, Diamond Lake, Cusick, and Usk.

You’ll find breathtaking beauty in rugged mountains and evergreen forests, and if you

love the outdoors, you’ll fit right-in with the locals. Summer is the best time to enjoy our

lakes and the Pend Oreille River Water Trail, where paddlers will get a fresh perspective

from a river’s point of view.

If you’re interested in history and culture, we invite you to learn about our pioneer,

timber, and mining history, and about our area’s first inhabitants, the Kalispel Tribe of

Indians. With festivals, fairs, car shows, and rodeos, you’ll find summertime fun every

weekend. And we think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the variety of friendly retail

stores, boutique shops, and restaurants.

We hope you enjoy your time with us.

Shopping

For such a naturally spectacular neck of the woods,

you might be surprised to know that the Greater

Newport Area is just as well known throughout

the region for one of the less “outdoorsy” forms of

recreation – shopping! Let us introduce you to a

sampling of our local retailers that make shopping

here a whole lot of fun.

Just for herIt all started a few years back when a few visionary shop owners

came together to launch Who Let the Girls Out!?! – a semi-

annual Saturday shop hop where hundreds of ladies from far and

wide descend upon Newport and Oldtown to enjoy the party

atmosphere (complete with complimentary sips, sweets and

photo booths), discover stylish finds and get their “passports”

stamped for a chance to win great gift certificates. Small town

retail therapy at its absolute finest. No surprise that WLTGO!?

was awarded “Event of the Year” for 2011. Although it’s only held

twice a year – in mid May and early November – the participating

shops are of course open year round.

While each shop has its own special something going on, the

darling of the bunch would have to be the Shanty Boutique,

Winner of 2011 “Business of the Year” and “Best Storefront” for

2011 & 2012. Located on Union Ave. in Newport, the Shanty is

a trendy, charming boutique offering fabulous clothing, home

décor and gifts complete with a cozy espresso bar. Once you’ve

stepped inside, you’ll feel like you’re visiting old friends each

time you return.

New to WLTGO!? and to Newport in general, is Bling & Sparkles

– a boutique specializing in customizable apparel that lets you

express your style with eye-catching, bling designs. Winner of

2012 “Best New Member”, Bling & Sparkles also dazzles with one-

of-a-kind handmade jewelry, fashion accessories, home décor

and souvenir apparel.

VintageAnd if you’re looking for something vintage, renewed,

salvaged, refreshed or eclectic, Foxwood Tea House hosts

two summer vintage events you don’t want to miss – Junk

from my Trunk salvage and vintage flea market and vintage

trailer show in June and Treasures on Foxwood vendor fair

in August.

Tech For your technological needs, whether smart phones, computers,

tablets, printers and all the accessories and wiring that go along

with them, downtown Newport’s Exbabylon caters to the

inner “tech geek” in all of us as well as offering service options

and tech support as well.

Customize your gearIf professional team sports jerseys, sportswear and embroidered

or engraved custom anything is your style then Country Lane

Embroidery is for you. Located in downtown Newport and

offering incredible prices and customer service, they bend over

backwards to get you what you want when you want it.

Everything I need, AND a smile!

Page 7: The Explorer's Guide to Summer Fun!

Home & GardenFor those who love to bake and cook, or just plain eat and drink,

The Kitchen Shoppe in Newport is a “must stop”. Typically

kicking off WLTGO!? with some special product demonstrations

and specials on the Friday night, this is where you can find all

the latest in cooking gadgets and accessories, not to mention a

fabulous wine selection. Every Friday the mouthwatering aroma

of freshly-made bread and baked goods will start your weekend

off just right.

And for your build it, fix it, paint it, lift it, demolish it and start over,

etc. tendencies, look no further than Albeni Falls Building

Supply, located just over the bridge in Oldtown. If you need it

for your home, shop or business, chances are they have it.

Inspired by the natural beauty of our area’s lakes, rivers and

forests, just over the bridge in Oldtown off Highway 2 you will find

Into the Garden, Up to the Lake. Offering embellishments

for home and garden, including original art, outdoor furniture,

vintage goods and garden tools with an emphasis on eco-

friendly and recycled products, you’ll feel completely relaxed in

their cozy and comforting setting.

VarietyYes, we even have the perfect shop for everyone in the family

– from young children to fishermen, teenagers to moms and

dads and even the more “experienced” sewers and quilters.

Ben Franklin Hometown Variety, located in Oldtown and

winner of 2012 “Business of the Year”. Offering apparel, health

& beauty, seasonal merchandise, housewares, stationery, toys,

crafts, fabrics and scrapbooking supplies, to name a few, Ben

Franklin truly offers it all.

This is just a sampling of our local retailers and

shopping events, designed to entice you to stay a while

and explore all that our shopping district has to offer

you. A full list of local chamber retailers can be found

in our Membership Directory, which we encourage you

to peruse. We may not be big city, big box, but we’re

full of local love that you can’t get anywhere else. Stop

and shop awhile, we know you’ll love us back.

More Shopping…

Found this shopping at Into the Garden, Up to the Lake. Cool!

Festivals & Fairs

Fun, wholesome, family events take place throughout

summer and early fall in the Greater Newport area, so

bring the kids, the cousins, and the grandparents and join

us at one of our many festivals, fairs, and celebrations!

RodeosIf you’re in the mood for some western sport, then dust off your

cowboy boots and hats to join us for the annual Newport Rodeo

in June, where you’ll watch cowboys and cowgirls compete in

traditional events like bronc riding, steer wrestling, roping, and

barrel racing. Then there’s the thrilling Bull-O-Rama in July,

where fearless cowboys sit atop bulls, each weighing nearly a

ton, with nothing but a slim braided leather strap to hang onto

for the rides of their lives. Both of these events are held at the

Newport Rodeo Grounds near downtown.

Each year we welcome our rodeo in a big way with the Newport

Rodeo Parade through downtown Newport. Kids will love

watching the parade floats, horses, classic cars, and fire trucks

roll by. More adventure awaits at the old time carnival during

rodeo weekend, which offers delicious food, fun games, and

vendor booths for shopping.

The quintessential American country fair, where you can watch

local kids show farm animals of all kinds and visit the exhibits of

our talented, community craftspeople, takes place at the Pend

Oreille County Fair and Rodeo in August at the Cusick

Fairgrounds.

4th of July CelebrationsCelebrating our nation’s independence doesn’t get any better

than here in the Greater Newport Area. We welcome you to

join us at one of our area’s festive Fourth of July community

celebrations. Start off with a pancake breakfast and parade

in Usk, or later in the day head to Diamond Lake for a boat

parade and fireworks show.

For an afternoon and evening full of family fun, visit the Kalispel

Tribe’s annual Fourth of July Celebration that includes

kids’ activities, a cook-out, and an awe-inspiring fireworks show

along the banks of the Pend Oreille River.

Our neighbors in Priest River host a celebration each July

highlighting our region’s timber history and rich northwest heritage,

complete with a huckleberry pancake breakfast, of course!

Activities

Motors & MoreAre you a fan of hydroplanes, trains, and automobiles? How

about lawnmowers, snowmobiles, and motorcycles? Well, we

have them all! For car enthusiasts, there’s the Hot Neon Nights

Car Cruise and the Show n’ Shine Car Show in Priest River

during their Timber Days Celebration in July. Bob’s Car Show,

always a favorite, comes to Newport City Park in September. If

motorcycles are more your style, then join us for Run Whatcha

Brung motorcycle drag races in July on the streets of Oldtown…

but be warned, it’s not for the faint-of-heart.

August brings thrilling hydroplane races to the Pend Oreille

River both in Oldtown and Ione. If you think snowmobiles are

just for winter fun, head to Ione’s Down River Days in July for

the jaw-dropping sight of snowmobiles racing across the Pend

Oreille River. Tired of seeing your lawnmower as a humdrum

yard maintenance tool? See what these machines can really do

by joining us in August at the Oldtown Lawnmower Drag

Races – a “must-see” for boys of all ages. In late July during

Down River Days, and again as the fall colors start to appear, be

sure to head up north to Ione to feel the rhythm of the tracks as

a passenger aboard one of the North Pend Oreille Valley Lions

Club train rides that take you through our rugged, scenic

countryside and across the Pend Oreille River.

FestivalsWith all the summertime excitement, if you’re in the mood for

something a bit more refined, we invite you to visit one of our

area’s festivals. CREATE Art Center hosts the annual Rhubarb

Festival each June, where you’ll enjoy a selection of garden

art vendors, artist demonstrations, children’s activities, adult

crafting, and a bake sale.

In July, the Pend Oreille Valley Lavender Festival, now

in its tenth year, is home to a juried show of high quality art,

craft, and horticulture products with 75 booths in a delightful

woodland park setting at Newport City Park. The event includes

live music by regional musicians, demonstrations, wine-tasting,

and micro-brews. Children will be captivated by lovely Lavender

garden fairies and can create their own works of art.

Get a firsthand experience of traditional Salish culture along

the banks of the Pend Oreille River during the Kalispel Tribe’s

Annual Pow Wow in August. There you’ll see traditional

dancing and drumming and can peruse vendor booths of

Native-American arts, crafts, and food.

Heritage Days, hosted by the Pend Oreille County Museum in

September, offers visitors a historical walking tour of Newport,

along with historical presentations, museum displays, arts and

crafts, and music.

Finally, the Newport Music Festival, held in September at

Newport City Park, offers a one-of-a-kind lineup of talented

Northwest regional performers of bluegrass, folk, progressive

Celtic, and classic country music.

Let’s roll.

The Greater Newport Area serves up tasty treats to satisfy

just about any craving including popular American classics

like pizzas and burgers, or for an international flair there’s

Mexican, Indian, Chinese, and with a reservation you can

enjoy a Victorian era inspired tea with scones.

American EatsFor the American classics, try Michael’s Café for a selection

of healthy and hearty food, delicious appetizers, flavorful

wings, and outstanding omelets. Michael’s O.P. is Newport’s

nightspot with a full bar, live bands and a DJ.

If you’re heading north, a must-stop is the Usk Bar & Grill

for Chef Frank Marmo’s phenomenal specials, often with

seafood or an international flair. The menu includes healthy

salads, handmade burgers cooked-to-order, salmon, and pizza.

Entertainment and live music will keep you coming back.

PizzaNothing satisfies a hungry family better than pizza, and

Westside Pizza in downtown Newport has the winning

combination of hand-made dough, premium meats, and the

freshest toppings. Satisfaction guaranteed. Pizza Factory

serves up made-from-scratch pizza dough and sauces, along

with appetizers, all served in a kid-friendly environment with

video games and a large seating area for the whole crowd.

International FoodsIf you’re in the mood for some international cuisine, try Rancho

Alegre, which is Newport’s popular Mexican restaurant serving

up delicious south-of-the-border favorites like tacos, enchiladas,

fajitas, and burritos, including seafood and vegetarian options.

The Golden Grill, located at the Golden Spur Motor Inn, serves

breakfast and lunch, including their “Indian special exotic lunch

and breakfast.” Golden China Restaurant serves Cantonese,

Szechwan, Mandarin and Hunan dishes; while the Foxwood

Tea House serves a five-course Victorian afternoon tea. And if

a river view and a cold beverage is what you’re after, Club Rio,

located in Oldtown on the bank of the Pend Oreille River, has a

patio that’s calling your name.

ProduceThere’s no time like summertime for fresh, seasonal produce.

Stop by Newport’s Farmer’s Market on Saturdays or visit

Bushels for a selection of refreshing fruit and produce that’s

locally grown. Freshly baked goods, breads and pantry essentials

can be found at both Bushels and The Kitchen Shoppe –

while you’re at it, weigh in on the “best bread and cinnamon

rolls around” debate. And if you’re packing for a picnic or camp-

trip, or just need to restock with some staples, visit Oldtown

Family Foods, which is a full-service supermarket with fresh

meats, hot deli, bakery, and an Idaho liquor store.

For a real small-town treat, visit Owen’s Grocery & Deli,

located just across the street from Centennial Plaza in downtown

Newport. Owens is home to a turn-of-the-century soda fountain,

espresso bar, deli, and salad bar.

Page 14: The Explorer's Guide to Summer Fun!

By now you’ve figured out that there’s no shortage of

activities to do outside during the summer months

in the Greater Newport area. But what about indoor

activities for the occasional cloudy day or when your

shoulders are still blistering from the weekend’s sun?

Don’t worry – you can stay active both indoors and out!

Keep fitThe Kalispel Tribe of Indians’ Camas Center for Community

Wellness is located on the reservation in Usk. The multi-million

dollar center is an incredible asset open for the entire community

and visitors to enjoy, featuring unforgettable indoor pools

(lap, kids, splash park, water slides, whirlpool), weight training,

fitness classes, climbing wall and full indoor gymnasium. It’s

no surprise that the Kalispel Tribe of Indians was named 2011

Community Partner of the Year for their outstanding support of

our community.

In Newport, just across from our Visitors Center, you’ll find Club

Energy, a privately owned 20,000 sq. foot full service health

and fitness facility providing the latest fitness has to offer. Their

certified trainers are second to none and the group classes

range from Zumba to Mat Pilates, kids self-defense, Spinning,

yoga and Kettlebells. You can also enjoy the free weights, cardio

equipment, racquetball and squash courts, fully equipped

Pilates studio, tumbling classes and stand up tanning.

BowlingIf you’re looking for more fun, less sweating, then put on your

bowling shirt and head on over to OK Lanes in Oldtown for

some good old fashioned bowling. There are even gutter

bumpers available for young children or the bowling challenged.

Food, video games and full bar on site as well so you can make a

day or an evening of it!

GamingFinally, if you’re stuck inside with only your smartphone,

tablet or computer to keep you company, try out some of

the free-to-play games published by Jawfish Games – the

industry leader in real-time multiplayer tournament games

for mobile and web.

Indoor Recreation

Strrrriiiiike!

Page 15: The Explorer's Guide to Summer Fun!

Go outside and play!

There is no shortage of local trails and active events

to get you outside enjoying our area’s glorious

summer weather.

Happy TrailsLace up your shoes and hike, mountain bike or jog the nicely

maintained Upper and Lower Wolf Trails nestled on the

edge of Newport, totaling about 5 miles. This series of easy trails

are suitable for beginners and so are perfect for families with

children of all ages complete with cedar benches for resting.

Nearly a mile of the Lower Wolf Trail is accessible to wheelchairs.

Scenic viewpoints along the lower trails gaze out over the Pend

Oreille River and all the trails traverse an open forest of Douglas

fir, ponderosa pine, grand fir and larch.

Down by the RiverIf being on, by or in the water is your thing, look no further

than the Pend Oreille River Water Trail. Each summer,

the north-flowing Pend Oreille River plays host to hydroplane

races (both in Newport and further north in Ione), snowmobile

races across the flowing river (at Down River Days), the Tri-

town Float Down in north county and the infamous Pend

Oreille Poker Paddle from Oldtown to Usk, now in its 32nd

year. Wrapping up the summer is the Newport Biayakathon,

where participants paddle and bike against the clock, starting

from Oldtown Rotary Park.

Hit the greensFor those who enjoy the fairways more than the waterways,

there are a number of golf fundraisers held at local courses

including the Newport Hospital Foundation’s Fore!, the

Health of It Tournament and the Kalispel Tribe of Indians’

People of the Pend Oreille Golf Tournament, both

held at Stoneridge in Blanchard. Later in August, the Greater

Newport Area Chamber of Commerce and the Priest River

Chamber of Commerce team up to put on their Challenge

for Charity Golf Tournament at The Ranch Club Golf

Course in Priest River, where teams compete to win prize

money for the local charity of their choice. All of these

tournaments are open to the public and we’d love to see you

out on the greens!

Break a sweatLast but not least, there are the events for the more hardcore

athletes. You know, the ones who like to run, bike and/or swim

and get those endorphins really flowing. Pend Oreille River

Valley’s Relay for Life is held through the night at the Newport

high school track in mid-August and is an inspiring event that

raises funds for and awareness of cancer research, treatment

and prevention.

There’s also the Diamond Lake 4th of July Half Marathon &

Mile Swim, the Great Northwest Fall Bike Tour starting

at TJ Kelly Park in Newport, the WACANID bike race along

the spectacular International Selkirk Loop and the Hospital

Foundation’s Autumn Bloom Fun Run held in Newport in

From one fisherman to another, you’ll enjoy fishing any

of our dozens of lakes and will find bass, northern pike,

and trout. For a real challenge, bring your fly pole. Stop

by Ben Franklin or Selkirk Ace Hardware to replenish

your tackle box, and if you need a Washington or Idaho

State fishing license, you can purchase those at Selkirk

Ace Hardware, too.

The RiverA unique feature of our little corner of the Northwest is the

north-flowing Pend Oreille River, and we invite you to grab

a paddle and your kayak to explore the Pend Oreille River

Water Trail. If you don’t have your own kayak, Bear Naked

Adventures can rent one to you. The geological formation of

the area is fascinating, and history buffs will enjoy learning

about early settler life and Native American points of interest.

Don’t forget your camera, because you’re sure to see wildlife

along the 70 miles of water trail between Oldtown Rotary Park

and Boundary Dam.

Some of the LakesBead Lake, at a little more than 700 acres, Bead Lake is a just

over eight miles north of Newport, has a boat launch, and a

forest trail along its shores. The lake features Kokanee, lake trout,

burbot, and northern pike minnows. Browns Lake, a little over

eight miles northeast of Cusick, has a surface area of about 90

acres, a boat launch, and hiking trail. Fisherman, this is your fly-

fishing only paradise for some beautiful trout.

Davis Lake, with a surface area of nearly 150 acres, offers

a boat launch and is just under 15 miles west of Newport.

You’ll find sunfish, largemouth bass, kokanee, rainbow trout,

and eastern brook trout. Diamond Lake, only eight miles

southwest of Newport with over 740 surface acres, has

largemouth bass, yellow perch, bullheads, rainbow and brown

trout. Diamond Lake is home to a thriving lakeside community

and offers a public boat launch, which is perfect for fishing and

water skiers alike.

Sacheen Lake, with about 280 surface acres and a boat

launch, is located a little more than 17 miles west of Newport.

Here there’s good fishing for sunfish, largemouth bass, Kokanee,

rainbow trout, and eastern brook trout.

Just for funHave little ones who want to cool off? Kids will enjoy

splashing and playing at Newport’s outdoor Spray Park

that opens this summer at Newport City Park. The park also

features a playground, skateboard park, picnic tables, and

plenty of shade.

If indoor swimming is more to your liking then visit the

Kalispel Tribe’s Camas Center for Community Wellness

in Usk. The center is home to a gem of an aquatics facility

offering fun for the whole family with a variety of pools,

including a children’s splash pool, and water slides – all

viewable from a relaxing hot tub.

Healthcare

We know you’ll always be careful while visiting our area,

but unfortunately accidents can happen – whether it’s

from over-exertion, too much sun or attempting outdoor

activities that might be a little outside your comfort

zone. But don’t despair, we have amazing local health

providers ready to get you (or your pet!) back up and at

‘em in a flash!

Healthcare ServicesRecognizing their strong commitment to our community, Newport

Hospital & Health Services was awarded Community Partner

of the Year for 2012. The Newport Hospital is a 24-bed Trauma Level

IV facility that offers many different services including: State-of-the-

Art 24 bed Acute Care, 24 hour ER, Diagnostic Imaging (Radiology),

Physical and Rehabilitative Therapy, General Surgical Care, 2

Wonderful Birthing Rooms with Private Jacuzzis and Laboratory

Services. Family Clinic, Assisted Living and Respite Care also offered.

But of course we are in a rural area and sometimes a trip to Spokane

is unavoidable. Northwest MedStar is a critical care helicopter

transport service and a vital part of our emergency response system

offering a membership program that defrays air transport costs not

covered by insurance.

Further north in Usk, the Camas Medical and Dental Clinic

provides competent and dependable medical and dental services

in a compassionate, friendly, and confidential environment. The

clinic is open to the public and offers: routine office visits, lab

services, x-ray, well child care, immunization, women’s health care,

referrals to specialists, pharmacy/prescription assistance for clinic

patients, after-hours nurse advice line, chiropractic care, physical

therapy/aquatic therapy and routine dental care and prevention.

Spa & MassageFor rest, relaxation and relief, look no further than Anastasia’s

Salon & Spa and A Therapeutic Massage, both located in

Newport. Because you deserve to pamper yourself with a massage,

facial, hair appointment, manicure or pedicure – or all of the above!

OptometryAnd after a day of sightseeing, if you find that you still can’t believe

your eyes, perhaps a visit to Newport Vision Source is in

order. They offer state of the art (and stylish!) vision products and

optometric services in a friendly and caring environment and work

closely with your primary care physician to coordinate total medical

eye care.

Public HealthOn the public health side of the equation, Northeast Tri County

Health District, with an office in Newport, offers a variety

of community and environmental health activities, including

immunizations, family planning, WIC nutritional education programs,

food safety and public health emergency planning and response.

PharmacyIf you need some help with some minor aches and pains, visit Seeber’s

- a retail pharmacy located in downtown Newport that even offers

free in-town delivery. Seeber’s also features daily living aids, braces,

ambulatory aids, cards & gifts, perfume, and even pool supplies.

For the dogsJust in case your pet is a little under the weather, Pend Oreille

Veterinary Clinic, located in Oldtown, is ready to serve you.

Offering medicine, surgery, grooming, pet food and supplies for

small and large animals, they’ve got you, and your pet, covered.
