Mrs. Lula (Lou) GarrisHinson died on Monday,June 5, 2017. Memorial services willbe held at 11:00 a.m. onThursday, June 8, 2017, inLilesville Baptist Church inLilesville. The family willgreet friends following theservice. Lou was the daughter ofCharles Robert and EllaJane Carter Garris ofLilesville. She is survived byAaron, her beloved hus-band and friend of 64years; three children, Jane,Ronnie (Melody) and Scott(Laura); grandchildren,Lianna (Chevis) Cuthrell,John Landen, and Christo-pher, Michael, Hannah(Christopher Cunningham)and Peter Hinson; great-grandchildren, Carter,Avery and Addie; niecesand nephews and theirfamilies. Lou’s sister MarthaJane Garris Atkinson pre-ceded her in death. Lou was a lifelongmember of Lilesville BaptistChurch. She enjoyed serv-ing on church committees,teaching mission studies,and the fellowship of herdearly loved JOY SundaySchool class that she taughtfor 40 years. She graduated fromLilesville High School in1947, completed pre-nurs-ing courses at Women’sCollege (UNCG), andearned her Bachelor’s De-gree in Nursing Educationat the Medical College ofVirginia (now VCU) inRichmond. After gradua-tion she worked as a nurs-ing educator at MCV fortwo years, as a nursing in-structor at Watts Hospitalin Durham, as an AssistantDirector of Nursing atHamlet Hospital, and as anurse in the private prac-tice of local physicians.
She was Director of Nurs-ing at Anson County Hos-pital, and helped establishand was Director of theLPN program at AnsonTechnical Institute. She taught Health Oc-cupations at Bowman(Anson) High School for15 years, and was sponsorof the Health OccupationStudents of America(HOSA) Club at the highschool. In her words, “Iwas always proud of mystudents who worked hardto learn, and set goals toachieve.” Many HOSA stu-dents won state, regionaland national awards. Louserved two terms on theCommunity Trustee Coun-cil of Anson CommunityHospital. She was a char-ter member of SigmaTheta Tau honor society ofnursing; a member of DeltaKappa Gamma (Tau chap-ter), and earned an Ameri-can Red Cross pin workingwith bloodmobiles andstate fair first aid centers. Memorials may bemade to the cemetery,building, or Elizabeth Leememorial funds of theLilesville Baptist Church,Liberty Hospice Services,Meadowview Resident Ac-tivities Fund, or anothercharity of choice. Lou and her family ap-preciate the loving care ofthe Meadowview and hos-pice staff, the LBC familyand friends and family,near and far. The arrangements arein care of Leavitt FuneralHome. Tommy was bornJune 2, 1924, in Wilm-ington, NC (NewHanover County), a sonof the late LemuelThomas Landen and the
late Mary Catherine Stew-art Landen. He was agraduate of New HanoverHigh School and received adegree in Mechanical Engi-neering from North Car-olina State University. Hewas a veteran of the UnitedStates Army, having servedduring World War II. Tommy worked for anumber of years with WRBonsal Company inLilesville and later retiredfrom Wade Manufacturingin Wadesboro. He was amember of Lilesville UnitedMethodist Church and at-tended First BaptistChurch, Wadesboro. In addition to his par-ents, Tommy was precededin death by his first wife,Nancy Ingram Landen andhis sister and brother,Annie Doris Landen Smithand Ray Stewart Landen. Surviving are his wifeFrances Lovette WilliamsonLanden; his children,Nancy Landen Getsinger(Bob) of Gibsonville,Lemuel Thomas “Buddy”Landen, III (Read) of New-port, NC and Mary LillianLanden of Baltimore, MD;his stepson William Frank“Billy” Williamson III ofWadesboro; his grandchil-dren, Merideth LandenGetsinger, Gregory RobertGetsinger (Kathryn),Lianna McDaniel LandenCuthrell (Chevis), John
