Castlegar labour disputeThe CuPe Local 2262 workers who

keep City of Castlegar services running are one step closer to taking job action. The Local is holding strike training for its members this week. mediated talks broke down on July 15. More Jumbo legal actionNelson-based non-profit society

West kootenay ecoSociety filed an Amended Petition this week respect-ing its legal challenge to the incorpo-ration of the Jumbo Glacier mountain Resort municipality (“JGmRm”). The Amended Petition asks the bC Supreme Court to quash the incor-poration of the personless municipal-ity, and strike down the legislative amendments which purport to allow the creation of such an entity.

West kootenay ecoSociety and other organizations are encouraging concerned citizens to camp at the Jumbo Road in August and September for the purposes of monitoring any ongoing development. The organization claims that the proposed developer has not met the 195 legally-binding commitments as part of its envi-ronmental approval. The environmental Assessment office is investigating these complaints, and encourages the public to assist in monitoring compliance.

On Thursday, Aug. 7, informa-tion was received by Nelson Police Department that fraudulent festi-val tickets were being sold for $300 and when the purchasers attended the music festival they were being advised by festival staff that the tick-ets purchased were not valid.

The Nelson Police Department conducted an investigation which resulted in two further incidents of fraud and the arrest of a 35 year-old female and her 49-year old partner, both from Nelson. both parties are facing multiple charges.

The police are continuing an active investigation into this matter. Anyone with information that could assist in in this investigation is requested to contact the Nelson Police Department at 250-354-3919.

During the early morning hours of Saturday, Aug. 2, .the Nelson Police Department received a complaint that a car and a person were missing. The incident was explained to police as follows. The vehicle operator drove to a location near the downtown core where he parked to off load some of his belongings into a residence. He left his female passenger to sleep in the front seat. The keys were left in the vehicle ignition. much to the chagrin of the vehicle owner, when he came back to collect another load of belongings, the vehicle was gone, passenger included!

The passenger reported to police that she had been asleep in the front seat of the vehicle when she was awoken by

someone touching her on the back. She did not recognize the male driver, so she asked him who he was. The male stated to the passenger, ”Don’t worry, i’m your daddy”. He then drove on. When the vehicle stopped to allow pedestrians to cross the road, the passenger wisely disembarked. The unknown male driver simply exited the vehicle and walked away.

The Nelson Police Department was notified approximately one hour after the incident took place. An investiga-tion was immediately launched and a person of interest was soon identified.

The Nelson Police Department are recommending to lock your unat-tended vehicle and don’t leave your ignition keys in an unattended vehicle. Not even for a moment!

During the middle of the day on Sunday, Aug. 3, a Nelson driver was shocked frightened when she sud-denly saw a male on a bicycle veer into her lane heading straight toward her vehicle. She found herself an uninvited and unwilling participant in a vehicular game of chicken. The participants were a 5000 pound auto-mobile versus 25 pound bicycle.

At the last possible second, just prior to impact, the bicycle rider veered around the onrushing vehi-cle, narrowly avoiding a collision. Astonishingly, as the male rode past her vehicle he spat onto the wind-shield and then again into the open window of the vehicle. The driver was shocked and disgusted.

Fortunately, she recognized the bike rider and called out his name. He returned to the scene and apologized for his vile outburst. He offered to clean his spittle from the interior of her vehicle. The apology was not accepted.

The complainant told police the name of the spitter. An investigation was initiated and police are on the lookout for the spitter.

During the morning hours of Saturday, August 2, the police were requested to assist a home owner with an animal in the basement of their home. The caller reported being able to hear an animal scratching about in the basement. The noise and thought of facing a wild animal made the caller wary thus the police were summoned.

The responding Nelson Police officers could not hear the scratch-ing noise that had been reported. As per their training, the officers pushed into the basement to investigate the unknown. After rooting through the basement for about ten minutes a cardboard box under the stairs was identified as the source of the noise. The box was isolated and carefully opened. inside the box the officers located a lone house mouse.

The mouse box was transported to outdoors where the mouse was freed into the yard. one of the officers remarked that the mouse appeared to be in remarkably good health after the harrowing ordeal.

Police Reports: ticket fraud, vehicle and passenger theft, “wildlife”

Friday, Aug. 1, at 4:18 a.m. the Nelson Fire Department responded to a report of a fire under a porch. both on duty members responded immediately.

upon arrival of the first crew, fire was observed. The first arriving crew’s primary objective was to extinguish the fire. The fire was extinguished quickly using 50 gallons of water & crews

checked for any possible extension and found none.

The fire appears to have originated under the steps of the front porch and is suspicious in nature.

in all, two firefighters responded to the incident with one fire engine. No injuries were reported as a result of this incident. Damage is estimated

at $5000. As we are in the wildfire season

Nelson Fire Rescue would like to take this opportunity to remind the public to reduce coniferous vegetation from within 3 meters surrounding your resi-dence. And to ensure you have working smoke alarms in your home.

Non violence is the only permanent solution

By Nelson Becker

Whatever we do we must constantly search for a nonviolent solution to the different crises that are in the middle east and other

parts of the world. i live in Nelson, and i am physically

although not emotionally, detached from world conflicts.

i know it is “easy” for me to express the need for nonviolent solutions, as i’m not living under the threat of thousands of bombs dropping around me. i don’t know what to say to the child who sees such atrocities

around them. The violence that exists in the middle

east and elsewhere is based on revenge and fear. Neither justifies violence. There are those who place blame on one side or another. i think it’s all past blame. it does not matter whether one side has killed 2,000 people and another side as killed 60 people, life is life.

you might ask me, what is the nonviolent solution? i have only partial answers but i know that there is always a nonviolent solution to our conflicts. Violence only asks for escalating violence.

i sometimes imagine the bully twisting somebody’s arm until you say, “i believe you”. but you can be sure that if you convince somebody of right or wrong through violence, you haven’t convinced him or her of anything except that you are violent.

i am touched by the latest meme around the song ?Happy? done by Pharrel Williams. People all over the world are using that song as the soundtrack their own videos. i am including a version that was made in israel and one that was made in Gaza. it is very clear that we are all the same. All we want is happiness.

For years man has strug-gled with the

eternal question: paper or plastic? For many of us paper is the obvious choice when it comes to grocery bags. but is that really the case, or is plastic getting a bad wrap (pun not intend-ed)?

Plastic is generally more convenient and even more easily reusable, as opposed to paper which breaks far more easily but is also more environmentally friendly. one fact you may not be aware of is that its easier for the stores to produce the plastic variety

of bags, yet environmen-tal groups tend to pressure the larger grocery stores to offer the more environ-mentally friendly alterna-tive. Also worth mention-ing is that the production of paper actually emits air pollution, significantly more then the production of plastic.

So which is better? Well it’s really up to you, going paper may be more envi-ronmentally friendly but plastic is cheaper to make which could be the dif-ference in a smaller store being able to maintain operations. make whatev-er choice suits you.
