TinyTalk Baby Signing classes

TinyTalk Baby Signing classes, have been running on the Island for over 4 years with Emily Pritchard running it for two of those years. Mummy to Daisy aged 6 and Poppy aged 3, Emily first realised the benefits of Baby Signing while living in Nottingham after having her first baby.

“I just loved the TinyTalk class structure of learning everyday Baby Signs (based on British Sign Language) through singing everyday nursery rhymes and songs with the second half of the class being social time with toys for the babies and a cuppa and biscuits for the Mums - a lovely time to get to know people while the babies play!” she added “how amazing is it to be able to communicate with a child who is not able to communicate through speaking yet but you can still share thoughts and feelings with them? Just a fantastic opportunity not to be missed!”

Winners of the winter competition with Isle of Wight Steam Railway.

I’m writing to say a massive thank you for the tickets our son, Owen, won from the Family Directory for admission to the Santa Special at Isle of Wight Steam Railway.

On 21st December 2011 Owen, then aged 2 yrs 7 months, invitied his best friend, Scarlett, then aged 2 yrs 9 months, along for the trip. Both children had a wonderful time, enjoying a trip on the train from Havenstreet through to Smallbrook, then passing back through Havenstreet to Wootton before returning to visit Santa at Havenstreet. Both children received lovely gifts from Santa, although they were both a little nervous at meeting him!! They also enjoyed Mr Randini’s magic show and the fairground ride whilst the adults enjoyed a mince pie and mulled wine! All in all a very enjoyable family day out.

Havenstreet Railway winner Elliot Davie

We had a fabulous time at Havenstreet on the 23rd December thanks to The Family Directory. We had a cosy steam ride snuggled up in a warm carriage - the steam was spectacular in the cold weather and we enjoyed watching it drift by. After our train ride we watched Randini’s magic show and got confused by his tricks whist rain pelted down onto the marquee - thankfully it didn’t leak! Finally we went into Christmas land which was beautiful and then to visit Santa.

He was lots of fun and told us to leave 10 pieces of carrot out for the reindeer and him because he was going on a diet - apparently the reindeer find him tricky to pull if he eats a mince pie in every house he visits!

Eco Island now has Eco Swimming Pool !

The Jane McGregor Swimming Academy has gone Eco friendly, which also means skin friendly, eye friendly, hair friendly and lung friendly. At the Safe Harbour Swimming Pool on The Strand in Ryde thousands of the Islands babies and young children have learnt to swim with Janes expert and unique teaching program. The warm therapeutic pool

has now been converted into a state of the Art salt electrolysis system, making it one of the safest, healthiest, and most environmentally friendly pools on the Island.

The system is controlled by a micro-processor controller as used to measure drinking water in the public water systems. This probe monitors the water quality every 10 minutes. The system produces drinking quality water which is natural, odourless, soft and skin friendly. With its warm and therapeutic temperatures it makes it the most ideal pool for babies and young children to learn to swim. Safe Harbour pool is also the first pool on the Isle Of Wight to use this new state of the art pooltronix system.

Over many years the Jane mcGregor Swimming Academy has worked extremely hard to make sure that the quality and service it offers for baby and children’s swimming lessons along with hydrotherapy is of the highest standard and quality of anywhere in the country. Jane is a highly qualified ASA (Amateur Swimming Association) teacher and STA (Swimming Teachers Association) tutor who has been teaching babies and young children for the past 20 years and has become an expert on the subject. Jane has received several prestigious awards of excellence from the Amateur Swimming Association and has been recognised for her emphasis on teaching babies and young children every aspect of staying safe in and around water. Jane’s philosophy is not to produce Olympic swimmers “although that would be a bonus”! But rather to ensure that every child she teaches not only has a love and confidence in and around the water but learns to respect it and be aware of the dangers associated with it. Her aim is to make sure that every child would know what to do if ever they accidentally fell into the water which is especially important here on the Isle Of Wight where our children are surrounded by water and beautiful beaches every single day.

To experience the warm therapeutic Eco friendly waters of The Safe Harbour pool and to have your child taught by some of the most experienced teachers and expert programs anywhere in the country you can contact Jane on 563139

Louise Hart from Calbourne Classics - Lamb Lollies!

IW Lamb Lollies with a parmesan crust and served with Sticky BBQ, Green Pesto & Mint Jelly dips. A recipe by Louise Hart & Jenny Baird from The Dairy Deli Farm Shop in Shalfleet

I am a firm believer that children get fed up of all the rules associated with eating a meal, and this often puts them off eating the food. Sometimes it’s Okay to forget protocol and let them ‘feel’ the food. This recipe is ideal to let kids unleash their senses, specifically touch and taste. This recipe requires no measuring or weighing, just let the children taste away while concocting the dips and crust. Take a fresh rack of Isle of Wight lamb, available to order from The Dairy Deli Farm Shop.

1. Find a slightly stale piece of unsliced bread and let the children grate it with a normal cheese grater (less washing up than a magimix!), then mix in about a third the quantity again of grated parmesan.

2. Let the children brush on to the lamb some runny IW honey & then sprinkle on the breadcrumb mix.

3. Put the lamb in the oven at about 180 for 25 - 30mins. Depending on how well done you like your lamb to be cooked. Our children like it pink!

4. Pour roughly a cup of Tomato ketchup, 3 tablespoons of light brown sugar and a dash of Worcester sauce into a bowl and let them stir and taste to their hearts content. Put dip in fridge to cool.

Whilst waiting for the lamb....

5. Next take 2 table spoons of green pesto and stir into approximately 6 tablespoons of crème freiche. Again feel free to adjust accordingly, our children like a strong pesto flavour so we would probably add up to 4 table spoons of pesto.

6. Also put out a big bowl of Mint Jelly dip to acquaint the children with the usual lamb accompaniment.

Finally steam some trees (broccoli) making sure you have cut them with long enough stalks for little fingers.

7. Once the lamb is done, place all the dips on the table and split each rib into a ‘lolly’ making sure you do this in front of the children as they love to see the origin of their plate. Serve with broccoli andfreshly baked bread rolls.

8. Let them dip all the food in the dips and never mention the word cutlery!

Priory School moves to Whippingham

Martin Castle Head of Mayville High School

My first experience of the Isle of Wight, and Portsmouth, was on a family holiday just after my 11th birthday. For me school was something that happened in Canterbury, a small state school of about 200 pupils. Independent education where I lived meant striped trousers, winged collars and boaters!

I wanted to be at teacher from the age of 14, and my journey has been influenced by many. My dad who made me understand the value of education, Mr Gladwell, who made me want to be a teacher, Pat Smart who made me a better teacher, my son who put everything into perspective and my wife who made me see the world in a different way.

I re-arrived in Portsmouth via schools in Bedford and Durham moving from a teacher of Y4 to running English and History departments in large junior and prep schools and as housemaster in a boarding choir school. Being Headteacher at Mayville High School, though is the best job I have ever had.

I am proud that at Mayville every child is a valued member of our community and at the core of Mayville’s philosophy is the knowledge that it is the happy child who learns. Mayville is a place that aims to find how your child shines and allows them to do just that. I am proud to be a part of this.

Oh and my favourites: blue (& pink), neck of lamb stew, Stevie Wonder, ‘Goodbye Mr. Chips’, the Lake District, my allotment, going to work and the occasional very cold Chablis or a pint of mild!

(See advert inside front cover).

Fiveways Ryde School

How many friends can fit in a box at Fiveways? It’s not a box; it’s a boat on a stormy sea; it’s a rocket flying to the moon; it’s a submarine, diving down deep! It’s the house made of bricks by the Three Little Pigs and the wolf is on his way! Our big box can be whatever we want it to be!

There is always something different to be curious about when we get together each day. This term we have been exploring hot homes and cold homes. Our chilly fingers have built igloos out of ice cubes! We have hoovered and polished, washed and scrubbed and made our own breakfast too. What jobs can you do to help in your home?

If you would like to know more about Fiveways, please call us on 01983616272 or visit our website

Priory School, founded in 1993 out of the Junior School at Upper Chine, the oldest independent school on the island from the last century, moved in February 2012 to its new home at Whippingham, one of the most historic buildings connected with education on the Isle of Wight, built by Queen Victoria to the designs of Prince Albert in 1864.

The growing numbers of staff and workers on the Osborne Estate prompted Prince Albert to look at proving education for their children. Literacy levels at the time were very low.

The pioneer of so much in terms of public education in the 19th Century - the Great Exhibition of 1851 stands out - Prince Albert designed the school to replace the National School that stood on the site at Whippingham since 1848 and had been an initiative of the Vicar of St Mildred’s.

These origins - church concern and public philanthropy - are very much in accord with Priory School’s own Christian ethos which sees education, certainly in England, as arising out of the view that all of us are the children of God, and of equal dignity and worth. The motive to educate and develop stems directly from that understanding.

Hordle Walhampton SchoolLymington

Inside-out learningThe children in Hordle Walhampton School’s Nursery and Kindergarten classes are really enjoying their new Early Years’ Outdoor Area which allows them to choose and move freely, and safely, between the classroom and the outside. The classroom doors open on to this fantastic new facility at 9.30 each morning and remain open throughout the day allowing the children to individually decide whether to stay in the classroom or to go outside.

With its fantastic sun and shade structure and a whole host of exciting areas and materials to interest and attract the children, the Outdoor Area is now playing an important part in the children’s development and learning progress. Activities are now child-led and staff report that the children are learning to make choices for themselves as well as developing new skills and behaviour patterns.Taking over a month to construct and costing over £25,000, the Outdoor Area contains a sandpit, herb & lavender sensory garden, digging area, building blocks, water tray and a tree bench, plus plenty of space in which to run around.

“This is a truly fantastic facility and so important for the children’s development,” said Ms Richardson, acting head of Early Years. “We have seen a real improvement in their concentration, communication and confidence and it is lovely to see free-flow working so well and bringing such benefits.”

For further information on Hordle Walhampton’s Pre-Prep and Prep School is on their website; www.hordlewalhampton.co.uk orcontact Mrs Suzanne Wright, registrar, on 01590 613300 and [email protected]

Pre-Schools & Nursery Schools

Boost your child’s confidence with Kumon’s maths and English study programmes

Harry Vernon, a former maths teacher at Sandown High School has often found that confidence plays a big part in how children perform in maths. Some children have the intellect and ability to do well but lack the confidence to fulfil their potential.

At the Kumon study centres in Sandown and Cowes we help build the students’ confidence. Each child is individually assessed and then given an easy starting point in the programme to build confidence and self esteem. The beauty of Kumon is that each student is able to progress through the programme at their own rate. They progress quickly through topics which they find easy and spend the time they need to on more challenging topics.

YMCA NurseriesYMCA nurseries are dedicated to providing excellent care and learning through play for babies and children under 5. We have 7 nurseries across the south east with 2 fantastic nurseries on the island; in Shanklin and Newport. Both nurseries are firmly embedded within their local communities and are easily accessible on main commuting routes with plenty of space for parking and safely dropping children off. Our Shanklin nursery is in a beautiful seaside location at YMCA Winchester House and our Newport nursery is in the pretty grounds of St Marys on Parkhurst Road.

Our qualified and experienced staff seek to be inspirational role models for children. We will assess your child’s individual interests and develop them through activities tailored to your child’s needs. Both nurseries have large outside spaces for children to explore and play safely outside and we take full advantage of our environment with regular walks and trips to local parks and the beach. Through these activities, children are able to learn about safety and they are encouraged to explore and talk about the environment. YMCA is committed to supporting families and the local community and offers a range of discounts for siblings and public sector workers. Robin Hill Garden ShowChildren’s Scarecrow Competition at the Isle of Wight Spring Garden Show 2012.

This year the Isle of Wight Spring Garden Show has teamed up with the Isle of Wight County Press and ‘The Entertainer’ toy shop to present a kids competition that will really get the little ones thinking creatively! This exciting competition, open to all the Island’s children between the ages of 4 and 14, challenges them to transform their favourite celebrity , fictional character, T.V or sports personality, into scarecrow form!

Your scarecrow could be as big or as small as you wish and you can use whatever materials you’d like – we want to encourage mums and dads to help their children to re-use and recycle old clothing and other house-hold items, so your project needn’t be expensive and it can put some of your old junk in the attic or garden shed to good use… The number one aim is to make your scarecrow as fun and as unique as you can so it stands out above the rest of the competition!

There are 2 classes, 4 - 9 years and 10 - 14 years. All you need to do to enter is bring your scarecrow along with you to the garden show before 1pm on Sunday 29th April. Children will love to climb the towering keep, imagining themselves as medieval soldiers as they march the battlements and survey the surrounding lands. Don’t forget to visit the donkeys, generations of which have lived at the castle since the 16th century when they were brought in to work the treadwheel in the well-house. See daily demonstrations and find out why each has a name beginning with J’.

Carisbrooke Castle provides a great family day out reaching into the past and providing opportunities for tranquil relaxation. Fishing PartiesWant a children’s party with a difference?

Get the kids outdoors in the countryside learning something new and exciting at Nettlecombe Farm

Fish at well-stocked lakes in a peaceful rural setting in the heart of the rolling South Wight countryside. Your children’s fishing party starts with a safety briefing and includes fishing tuition with qualified, experienced coaches, plus certificate and a half price voucher for a day fishing ticket at Nettlecombe Farm. Optional extras include fishing themed party bags, trophies and prizes for catch of the day. Once the kids have enjoyed fishing they are free to explore the farm and meet the animals including reindeer, alpacas, donkeys, giant rabbits and emu.

There are also play areas and football pitches where children can play before having birthday tea and cake in the newly renovated activity barn.

Cupcakes & tea I decided to take my absolute love of making (and eating) cupcakes and started my own company so I can share my delicious cupcakes with everyone. For me, sitting down with friends a cupcake and a cup of tea is what happiness is made of.

I make all my cakes fresh to order so you can be sure of mouth-watering goodness. I use the best and freshest ingredients and as much as possible I use natural colours and flavours. With delicious swirls of butter cream and simple designs, they would compliment any party or celebration. Wedding cupcakes can be supplied with a topper cake too.

So if you fancy a cupcake party (adults too!), an indulgent box of 6 or a part box of 600 look no further than Cupcakes & Tea.

Mite Allergy Prevention StudyOver the last few decades there’s been an increase in the number of children with asthma, eczema, hay fever and food allergy.

We still don’t know why more individuals are developing these diseases. We know that children born into families with asthma and allergic disease are at a higher risk of developing allergies.

The purpose of this study is to see if we can reduce this risk. One way to prevent the development of asthma and other allergic diseases is to stop babies becoming allergic to common allergens such as house dust mite. During infancy the immune system is still learning what’s harmful. By exposing babies to a common allergen, such as house dust mite, we hope to be able to teach their immune system that it’s harmless, therefore preventing the development of allergy to it.

To be effective we believe we need to act very early in life, well before the baby reaches their first birthday. If we’re correct, this should reduce the development of asthma and other allergies in later life.

If this can be proven to work, we’ll be able to apply this preventive measure to other children who are born with a high risk of developing these diseases.

Little Laura Nanny Agency Little Laura’s Nanny Agency is here to help parents find qualified, experienced trustworthy nannies and babysitters. Little Laura’s was set up in 2003 to meet the ever growing demand for local nannies and babysitters. We have placed numerous child carers in a range of diverse roles, be it full time, part time, temporary due to unexpected circumstances or simply a babysitter for the evening.

Little Laura’s is a Nanny Agency with a good register of nannies, personally interviewed by us, and references are checked without exception. Little Laura’s understands that entrusting somebody new to look after your children is a daunting prospect for any parent, which is why Little Laura’s takes the time to understand the requirements, and the sort of person you are seeking to help locate the right nanny or babysitter for you. As an experienced childcare professional, Anna understands the needs of parents and their children. Children need a carer who is responsible, confident and energetic.

Anna Segal trained at Isle of Wight College of Arts & Technology to gain her NNEB Diploma in Nursery Nursing. Anna has been a nanny for over 17 years now and continues to keep in contact with the various families she has worked for. Anna aims to provide families with reliable nannies and babysitters, who are trained and/or have experience.

Little Laura’s does not provide details of any current positions on our register without having satisfaction of the applicants suitability and criteria. All nannies are either CRB checked or in the process of being checked.

Can you make a difference to a young person’s life ?Do you feel you can make a huge difference to a young person’s life by becoming a foster carer? The Island has many youngsters in foster care, but also suffers from a lack of carers, in particular for teenagers. People are often put off becoming involved in fostering. There are many myths out there which people could think disqualifies them from becoming foster parents. They may believe not being married or being gay or out of work means they cannot become involved. That is not the case, and the fostering and adoption team can offer good advice and dispel any concerns. Sadly it is not always possible for all children to be with their natural family, so foster carer’s make a huge difference to people’s lives and many of us may not realise just how important they are. It is vital the Island has a good base of foster carers, so that children in need of care do not have to leave the Island. Foster carers have the full support of the Fostering and Adoption team, whose dedicated staff are on hand with support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. To find out more call 01983 525790.
