On December 15, families gathered together for our annual Tree of Remembrance ceremony. This special occasion is a time to reflect and remember those residents who passed away the previous year. Each name is called and, following a moment of reflection, the family is invited to come forward and hang a personalized placard on the tree. The family is then presented with a keepsake ornament engraved with their loved one’s name. Close to 100 people attended this year’s event. Hors d’oeuvres and drinks were enjoyed by all following the ceremony.

A Resident Profile is not featured in this issue. February will feature two such profiles as well as pictures from our resident holiday parties. Thank you!

Anna Maria of Aurora resident Sally Springer celebrated her 100th birthday on December 17 with family and friends and a most delicious “Hough Bakery” cake**. Sally is a spunky gal, always smiling and always happy. She looks forward to celebrating the different holidays throughout the year, and dresses accordingly. We are fortunate to have shared in this special day with Sally, and wish her continued happiness and good health. May God bless you!
**The legendary Hough Bakeries, a Northeast Ohio staple for almost 70 years (1903 to 1972) is alive and well again in Beach-wood, Ohio. Former head baker and keeper of all the secret recipes, Archie Garner, continues to offer all these delectable “deli-cacies” we all know and love at his bakery, Archie’s Hough Bakery.
Sally is a big fan of St. Patrick’s Day! Looking good, Sally!

Congratulations to our Kensington Employee of the Month, Diamond Byrd, Dietary Aide. Diamond was nominated by a resident at KCC. Diamond is always working hard and is very pleasant to interact with. She is always willing to lend a helping hand with a smile on her face! Thank you for providing our residents with great dining experiences, we appreciate you! Keep up the great work!

Congratulations to our Anna Maria Employee of the Month, Ebony Wilson, LPN. Though Ebony has only been with us a few months, she has proven time and again just how much of a team player she is. Ebony displays positive energy and attitude, and one will consistently find a smile on her face. She does what is best for one and only reason we are here – for our residents! It is truly an honor to have such a great nurse on our team! Congratulations, and keep up the good work!

INDEPENDENT AND ASSISTED LIVING
Five, four, three, two, one….Happy New Year! Assisted living residents celebrated the new year a bit earlier, like at 2pm! Much easier to celebrate at this time than at midnight! Along with wonderful entertainment, residents enjoyed delicious desserts and sparkling cider. Oh, and of course noisemakers and hats!
They say that teamwork is dreamwork, right? When creating a collaborative piece of art, all hands are necessary to properly complete the project. Assisted living residents created a mosaic in the form of a peace dove, and though the work was tedious, the finished product is beautiful! The mosaic is on display in the Wellness Center; come check it out! (Note: these mosaic kits, Stick Together, are sold on Amazon in a variety of designs).

Resident Ginny Richner helps out entertainer Tom Todd with the hand motions to “Up on the Housetop.” Ginny did an awe-some job; she’s signed up again for next year!
Therapy dog Bowie begs independent living resident Nina DeWitt for one of her homemade dog treats. According to Santa’s list, Bowie was a good boy this year, so Nina treated him to not one, but two dog treats!
Weekend Activity Assistant Alice Hesmondhalgh right, playing cello stopped by with her string ensemble from Aurora High School to play a few holiday songs. Very talented group. Thanks for stopping by!

The holiday season would not be complete without a visit to Ernie Quesenberry’s house. Ernie, a bus driver for our assisted and independent living resident, hosted a lovely evening at this house in Streetsboro. Residents enjoyed viewing all his amaz-ing decorations, sharing holiday memories and being treated to some delicious holiday fare. Many thanks for a fantastic and festive evening.

A local Cub Scout troop stopped by one fine evening to sing a few holiday songs. Their angelic voices certainly put a smile on many a face!

What started out as just something “fun to do” has turned in a more serious endeavor. After months of practice, the Anna Maria of Aurora Chorus (comprised of our assisted and independent living residents) performed a most beautiful Christmas concert for family, friends, and employees. The Mormon Tabernacle Choir might be in a for a bit of competition!

Norwood residents spent a lovely afternoon in Kirtland, Ohio, touring the Nativity Exhibit at the Historic Visitors Center. This amazing exhibit showcases over 500 nativity sets from around the world, depicting how different cultures celebrate Christ-mas. It’s truly a sight to see. In fact, this exhibit is one of the North American Bus Association’s “Top 100 Events in North America.” Fortunate to have something like this right in our own backyard. The exhibit runs daily through the month of December.

Ginger with her granddaughter. So happy! Busy little bees!
The great-granddaughter of IL resident Ginger Otcasek stopped by with a few of her friends to spend an afternoon coloring with Grandma (and a few of the other residents). The smile on Ginger’s face says it all.
Assisted living residents had a ball bringing wooden snowmen and candy cane ornaments “to life” with a variety of differ-ent-colored paints. Too cute!

An uplifting, “feel good” evening of singing, dancing, and words of praise… courtesy of Agape Ministry, Cleveland chapter. Agape is a Greco-Christian term referring to love, and this ministry is on a mission to help people fall in love with a loving Sav-ior. Many thanks for sharing the “love” with us!
We love our “out to lunch” outings, and last month, we enjoyed lunch at the Cowboy Food & Drink and Aladdin’s, both in Bainbridge, as well as Fischer’s Café & Pub in Peninsula. The Cowboy features Tex-Mex food, and is famous for their smoked ribs (cooked and smoked on premises). Aladdin’s offers fresh, made-to-order Lebanese-American entrees like hummus, shish kabob, and pitas. Fischer’s offers home-cooked meals, just like mom used to make! So delicious. Let’s see where we dine next month!

Rest in Peace, Martha Moore
Last month, one of our Norwood independent living residents passed away after a brief illness, and we all were deeply saddened by the loss. Her family asked that we share the following letter, as they truly appreciated the wonderful care Martha received here at the Campus of Anna Maria.
Our mother, Martha Moore, moved into her independent living apartment in February of 2018. Although initially nervous about the move, she adjusted quickly and fell in love with her new home. She was treated like family right from the start and often told us how kind the staff was. Always social, she was delighted to participate in the many activities provided. She enjoyed meals with her friends, and even enjoyed a few Happy Hours. In the week prior to her death, we were all treated with compassion and kind-ness and offered many hugs of condolence. We were told repeatedly if there was any-thing we needed, just ask. Our family was your family and we can never thank you enough. We will always be grateful for the gentle, competent care Mom received in her final days, and for the kindness that was extended to us. Mom was an amazing, wonderful, loving woman who will be greatly missed. We rest easier at night knowing her last few years were spent somewhere where she was so happy to call home, and we sincerely thank you for that!

ANNA MARIA / KENSINTON
A beloved tradition here at the Campus of Anna Maria is for our employees to purchase small gifts for our residents. Santa’s Elves (aka activities gals) distribute these gifts on Christmas Eve morning, roaming the halls spreading laughter, good cheer, and merriment to all. It’s truly wonderful to witness the big smiles on our residents’ faces as they open their gifts. PRICELESS! Many thanks to those employees who participated in this special activity.
Using their winnings from Bingo, Kensington at Anna Maria shopped for Christmas gifts for their family members at the “secret” Santa Shop. This very popular event features lovely items like holiday decorations, word search books, candy, lotions, perfumes, and other small gifts, all very reasonably priced. Residents appreciate this wonderful opportunity to “shop” for loved ones.

Crafting is one of the favorite activities with the residents at Anna Maria and Kensington at Anna Maria. Crafts during the month of December centered around holiday themes, of course. We crafted adorable items like sock gnomes, paper snow-flakes, candy canes, and cookie tins with hand painted lids. The latter were passed out to our employees as a “thank you” for all of their help. Many thanks to our activities staff for all of their wonderful and creative crafting ideas.

Anna Maria and Kensington residents lent a helping hand in decorating both facilities for the holiday season. They sure did a great job, and we appreciated the extra set of helping hands!
People come from far and near to attend one of the Christmas concerts at Parkside Church in Bainbridge. It is truly an amaz-ing production. Anna Maria and Kensington residents were lucky enough to score a few tickets for one of the evening con-certs.
It’s Beginning to Look a lot like…. Christmas!

Little Lola stopped by to visit her mom (Activities Director Bridget Sassa), looking absolutely adorable in her holiday tutu. Lola is a beagle / King Charles mix, adopted by Bridget from the Wooster dog shelter. She is eight years young and full of love. Stop by anytime, Lola!
When an employee reaches a certain milestone with years of service, this achievement is recognized by administration with a congratulatory cake and a service pin (to wear proudly on his or her name badge). Two Anna Maria employees achieved five years of service during the month of December: Carey Huffman, LPN (South unit), and Julia Stratton, STNA. We are proud of the fact that more than 60% of our work force has achieved five or more years of service. Congratulations!
Looking Good, Lola!
Congratulations!

A few weeks ago, employees were encouraged to wear any sort of “ugly Christmas sweater.” Many met the challenge head on! Not sure which sweater is the ugliest? Though our employees work hard, it’s always nice to throw in a bit of fun!
Way to go, Team Campus of Anna Maria! Employees collected over 150 lbs of non-perishable goods which were donated to the Volunteers of America (Aurora branch). These items helped replenish the empty shelves and helped feed many a hungry family this past holiday season and beyond. Donations are needed year-round, not just during the holidays. We hope to hold similar food drives in 2020 and exceed 150 lbs. ***** The Family Tree Home Care division of Anna Maria collected personal items and toiletries for women’s homeless shelters in the area. Enough items were collected to fill two large boxes. THANK YOU!

January is National Blood Donor Month! To find the nearest blood drive, check out redcrossblood.org. One local drive is Wednesday, January 8, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 342 S. Chillicothe Rd., Aurora, from 1-7pm.
January 1 - Happy New Year! What’s your resolution for 2020? Make certain it’s realistic, and take small steps in achieving your goals! January 6 – National Bean Day! What is your favorite type of bean? Baked beans? Jelly beans? Kidney beans? Vanilla bean? Beans are known as the “musical fruit” due to a particular sugar called olio saccharide, which is not easily digested by the human body, resulting in, you guessed it, gas! January 13 – Watch the two top college football teams, LSU and Clemson, battle it out in New Orleans (Mercedes-Benz Superdome) for the title of national champion. Catch all the action on ESPN at 8pm EST (who agrees that OSU should be playing, not Clemson…)January 20 – Federal holiday celebrating the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. January 23-26 – The best big-air snowboarding, skiing, and snowmobiling are headed your way from the Winter X Games in Aspen, CO. January 25 – The Year of the Rat! Chinese New Year begins!
On This Date:
January 4, 1936 – Billboard magazine publishes the first pop music chartJanuary 7, 1927 – The basketball team later known as the Harlem Globetrotters plays its first gameJanuary 16, 1919 - The 18th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution prohibited the manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquorsJanuary 29, 1845 – Edgar Allen Poe’s narrative poem “The Raven.” It first appeared in the New York Evening Mirror
