THE FAULT IN OUR STARS
The two main characters of this novel are Hazel
Grace, a cancer fighting teen, and Augustus Waters
who is currently NEC. (NEC – no evidence of cancer.)
The setting of this story primarily takes place in
Amsterdam, the home of Hazel’s and now Augustus’
favorite author, Peter Van Houten; Author of Imperial
Affliction, a book which ends mid-sentence.
THE FAULT IN OUR STARS
In the beginning of this novel, Hazel Grace attends a cancer
support group meeting. There, she meets Augutus Waters, a
very handsome teenage boy who had cancer but eventually
fought it. In the canccr support meeting, the attendees start
talking to one another and when Augustus is asked what he
is afraid of he answered, oblivion. Hazel’s response and
stated thoughts silenced Augustus but also made him admire
even more than he did when he first laid eyes on her.
THE FAULT IN OUR STARS
Some of Hazel’s response to Augustus:
“There will come a time when all of us are dead …
No human beings remaining will ever remember that
anyone ever existed or that our species ever did
anything. … And if the human oblivion worries you, I
encourage you to ignore it. God knows that’s what
everyone else does.”
THE FAULT IN OUR STARS
The Protagonist – The protagonist of this story is
primarily Gus although Hazel could be considered a
protagonist also. With that being said, Gus is the
protagonist because although he knows Hazel has
cancer and that his cancer could possibly come back,
he doesn’t let it hold him back. He always looks at
the best in things and not the worst.
THE FAULT IN OUR STARS
The Antagonist – The antagonist of this story is Cancer and Peter
Van Houten.
Cancer is an antagonist because it has damaged many people in
this story. Whether they actually have the cancer or not. Cancer not
only affects the cancer victim, but also their loved ones as well.
Peter Van Houten is an antagonist because when asked for an
ending by Hazel and Gus, he blows up in their face and also allows
alcohol to control him and ruin his relationships with the only
people that cared for him.
THE FAULT IN OUR STARS
Conflict occurs in this novel when Hazel and Gus go
visit their favorite author in Amsterdam, Netherlands
for a conclusion to the novel that ends mid-sentence.
Upon arriving, they realize the author, Peter Van
Houten, is an alcoholic who cannot control his anger.
After stating their thoughts, Hazel and Gus leave to
go sightsee Amsterdam with Van Houten’s assistant
while he sits and realizes what he’s done to himself.
THE FAULT IN OUR STARS

THE FAULT IN OUR STARS
“One doesn’t like to throw around phrases like
“instant classic” lightly, but I can see The Fault in
Our Stars taking its place alongside Are You There
God? It’s Me, Margaret …” - Time
“Green shows us true love…and it is far more
romantic than any sunset on the beach.” -New York

THE FAULT IN OUR STARS
Personally, this book is one of the best books I’ve
ever read. Not only did I cry multiple times, but it
also made me laugh. This book is a book where you
can read it over multiple times and never get tired of
it. John Green is a fantastic writer and I am a big fan.
