The Collect of the Day Celebrant God be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray.

O God, by the leading of a star you manifested your only Son to the peoples of the earth: Lead us, who know you now by faith, to your presence, where we may see your glory face to face; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

First Reading Isaiah 60:1-6 The people are seated.

A Reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah.

1Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD has risen upon you. 2For darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the LORD will arise upon you, and his glory will appear over you. 3Nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn. 4Lift up your eyes and look around; they all gather together, they come to you; your sons shall come from far away, and your daughters shall be carried on their nurses’ arms. 5Then you shall see and be radiant; your heart shall thrill and rejoice, because the abundance of the sea shall be brought to you, the wealth of the nations shall come to you. 6A multitude of camels shall cover you, the young camels of Midian and Ephah; all those from Sheba shall come. They shall bring gold and frankincense, and shall proclaim the praise of the LORD. Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

Children's Choir Anthem Three Kings Michael Bedford Three kings came on camelback, three kings came riding, on a journey far from home, in God’s love abiding. Bringing precious gifts with them, they came from afar led across the desert bare by a shining star. Just as they brought peace and light to the baby boy, let us bring our hearts to him, filled with love and joy. -Bedford

Sequence Hymn What Star Is This, With Beams So Bright Hymnal, #124 The people stand.

The Holy Gospel Matthew 2:1-12 Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ according to Matthew. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. 1In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, 2asking, “Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage.” 3When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; 4and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. 5They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet: 6‘And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel.’ ” 7Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. 8Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage.” 9When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. 11On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure

chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. 12And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road. Deacon The Gospel of our Savior. People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The Doxology Sung to the tune Old 100th Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise God, all creatures here below; praise God above, ye heavenly host: Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. The Nicene Creed We believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,

Page 8: THE FEAST OF THE EPIPHANY(TRANSFERRED) 9:00 a.m.Sunday ... · your heart shall thrill and rejoice, ... In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise

eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation

he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Celebrant The peace of Christ be always with you. People And also with you.

The Holy Communion Offertory Sentence The Celebrant says

Walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself for us, an offering and sacrifice to God. Ephesians 5:2

Celebrant Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Facing the Holy Table, the Celebrant proceeds

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Almighty God, Creator of heaven and earth.

Because in the mystery of the Word made flesh, you have caused a new light to shine in our hearts, to give the knowledge of your glory in the face of your Son Jesus Christ our Savior.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

The People stand or kneel.

The Celebrant continues

Holy and gracious God: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and maker of all.

Jesus stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Savior Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper Jesus took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Celebrant and People

Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

The Celebrant continues

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, Almighty God, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling Christ's death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.

Page 12: THE FEAST OF THE EPIPHANY(TRANSFERRED) 9:00 a.m.Sunday ... · your heart shall thrill and rejoice, ... In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise

Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.

All this we ask through Jesus Christ our Savior. By Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty God, now and for ever. AMEN.

The Lord’s Prayer As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray,

People and Celebrant Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins

as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial

and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power,

and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.

ARE THE HOLIDAYS A DIFFICULT TIME FOR YOU?

Are you finding yourself sad, in pain, depressed, or alone during the holidays? Are you bereaved by the memory of a loved one who is not here to share the joy of the season with you? There are many reasons that we might find the holiday season the most painful time of the year. St. Mary’s lay Stephen Ministers are here now and all year to walk with you and make sure that you are not alone. Stephen Ministers provide trained Christ-centered pastoral support to people in times of crisis. You will find more information on Stephen Ministries in the pew racks every Sunday. If you, or someone you know, might benefit from a Stephen Minister, contact either Rev. Erickson or Rev. Judson.

POCKET PRAYERS We gather at St. Mary’s Church on Sundays and for special events as we pray, sing, share Communion and fellowship together. As we leave St. Mary’s, we begin a new week of work, play and all the parts of our busy lives. We need to remember, though, that God is with us, not just on Sundays, but every day and night, always. And to remind us of His love and presence with us, we will have available “Pocket Prayers” to carry with you in your pocket, to post somewhere at home or to share with a friend or stranger. Look for the pocket-sized prayers on the Welcome Table following Sunday services. If you would also like to contribute prayers, please contact Deacon Nancy Bryan at [email protected]. May the peace of God be with you always.
