PEACE LUTHERAN CHURCH June 7, 2020

WELCOME!

We love that you are here today! We are glad that you have joined us to celebrate the saving love of the Triune God. Our service is printed for you in its entirety in this worship folder.

Restrooms are located in the hallways to the right as you exit the worship space, as well as across the hallway as you enter the school hall.

Quiet room – If you have a young child or nursing infant and are in need of a quiet place which still allows you to see/hear the service you may use the library in the back of this worship space.

TODAY’S FOCUS Today we celebrate “the Festival of the Holy Trinity.” The noun Trinity and the adjective Triune are derived from the Latin for “Three in One.” Although you will not find these exact words “Triune” and “Trinity” in the Bible, yet what they summarize and teach is proclaimed throughout God’s Word. Indeed, you need not look any further than the first two verses of Scripture to find this truth that while there is only One God, yet there are more than one distinct persons in the one and only Divine Being—indeed, three distinct persons in one Godhead—Father, Son and Holy Spirit. As we’ll confess today, each is equal in glory and coeternal in majesty, but there is only one God!

This divine mystery is beyond the ability of our limited reason to grasp. However, we do not celebrate the Holy Trinity today to try to understand this incomprehensible truth, but rather to be reminded who our God is and what He has done for us. He is our Creator, Savior and Sanctifier. He is the God who has loved us and saved us because his undeserved love for lost sinners is every bit as big and amazing and beyond understanding as He himself is! Therefore let us listen to His Word and by His Spirit’s power believe and praise the great Three-in-One, our Savior God!

THE ATHANASIAN CREED Today we use selected portions of the Athanasian Creed as our confession of faith for Trinity Sunday. This creed is named after St. Athanasius, a staunch defender of the Christian faith in the fourth century. It was prepared to assist the Church in combating two errors that undermined Bible teaching. One error denied that God’s Son and the Holy Spirit are of one being or Godhead with the Father. The other error denied that Jesus Christ is true God and true man in one person. The Athanasian Creed continues to serve the Christian Church as a standard of the truth. It declares that whoever rejects the doctrine of the Trinity and the doctrine of Christ is without saving faith. The section of the Athanasian Creed we use today is the portion that confesses the Bible’s teaching about the Triune God. This portion serves as a very fitting confession of faith for Trinity Sunday. A translation of the entire text of the Athanasian Creed may be found on pages 132-133 in Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal.

WHAT DOES THAT MEAN AGAIN? Below are some common words we use in Scripture and Worship but that we likely do not often use elsewhere. Therefore, their definitions are given from the glossary of the 2017 edition of Luther’s Catechism. Redemption – Christ’s work of ransoming all people from the slavery of sin, death, and the devil by paying the price of his blood, suffering, and death. Repentance – A change of mind about one’s sin. The Bible uses “repentance” in two senses: 1. Sorrow over sin and desire to stop sinning; 2. Sorrow over sin and faith in the forgiveness of sins. Sanctify – Set apart. The Holy Spirit through the means of grace sets us apart from the unbelieving world by calling us to faith in Jesus. The Holy Spirit sets us apart more and more from the sinful behavior of the world by strengthening our faith. Praise – 1. To speak joyfully and admiringly about God’s goodness; 2. To commend someone for their actions. Worship – Any thoughts, words, or actions that we direct toward God as a way of praising him or praying to him.

GOSPEL LESSON Matthew 28:16-20

16The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had directed them. 17When they saw him, they worshipped him, but some hesitated because they were uncertain. 18Jesus approached and spoke to them saying, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19Therefore go and gather disciples from all nations by baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and by teaching them to keep all the instructions I have given you. And surely I am with you always until the end of the age.”

ATHANASIAN CREED (selected portions)- See the inside back cover of this worship folder for more information on the Athanasian Creed

Now this is the true Christian faith: We worship one God in three persons and three persons in one God, without mixing the persons or dividing the divine being.

For each person - the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit - is distinct, but the deity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is one, equal in glory and coeternal in majesty.

What the Father is, so is the Son, and so is the Holy Spirit. The Father is uncreated, the Son uncreated, the Holy Spirit uncreated;

the Father is infinite, the Son infinite, the Holy Spirit infinite; the Father is eternal, the Son eternal, the Holy Spirit eternal;

yet they are not three who are eternal, but there is one who is eternal,

just as they are not three who are uncreated, nor three who are infinite, but there is one who is uncreated and one who is infinite.

In the same way the Father is almighty, the Son is almighty, the Holy Spirit is almighty; yet they are not three who are almighty, but there is one who is almighty.

So the Father is God, the Son is God, the Holy Spirit is God; yet they are not three Gods, but one God.

So the Father is Lord, the Son is Lord, the Holy Spirit is Lord; yet they are not three Lords, but one Lord.

Page 9: The Festival of The Holy Trinity - peacewels.org

9

For just as Christian truth compels us to confess each person individually to be God and Lord, so the true Christian faith forbids us to speak of three Gods or three Lords.

The Father is neither made nor created nor begotten of anyone. The Son is neither made nor created, but is begotten of the Father alone.

The Holy Spirit is neither made nor created nor begotten, but proceeds from the Father and the Son. So there is one Father, not three Fathers; one Son, not three Sons; one Holy Spirit, not three Holy Spirits.

And within this Trinity none comes before or after; none is greater or inferior, but all three persons are coequal and coeternal, so that in every way, as stated before, all three persons are to be worshiped as one God and one God worshiped as three persons.

Whoever wishes to be saved must have this conviction of the Trinity.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

Triune God, you are the one eternal God, whose Name we praise forever. We could not have known you, our only Savior, if you had not revealed yourself to us as Father, Son and Holy Spirit—three persons, yet one God. Remove from us all unbelief and grant us humble faith as we contemplate this high and holy mystery. Scatter those who are wise in their own arrogance, and give us a simple, childlike trust to worship you as Trinity in Unity and Unity in Trinity.

God our Father, open our eyes to see the gifts you pour down on us daily—purely out of your own fatherly love and care. Lord Jesus our Savior, help us believe that all you did, all you suffered, and all you endured you did for us, to rescue us and set us free. Creator Spirit, through Word and sacrament, help us grow in understanding the breadth and depth and height of the love of God. Make us firm in our resolve in our battle with our sin. Be our strength so we show ourselves to be your children: faithful in prayer, constant in hope, fervent in love and eager to bring your message of peace through Christ to our world.

Special Prayers

We bring these requests to you Lord and pray confidently as you have taught us:

Page 13: The Festival of The Holy Trinity - peacewels.org

LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

PRAYER FOR GRACE

O Lord, our heavenly Father, almighty and everlasting God, you have brought us safely to this new day. Defend us with your mighty power, and grant that this day we neither fall into sin nor run into any kind of danger; and in all we do, direct us to what is right in your sight, through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord.

Amen.
