When The Filmmakers Guide to South Africa started 10 years ago, the local film industry was

a very different place, as the interviews within this

commemorative edition demonstrate.

The Department of Trade and Industry

(the dti) has been proud to play a role in a decade

of expansion and diversification.

The scale and profile of our projects has

increased year on year, as has our expertise and

infrastructure. Even our locations have expanded,

thanks to the recent launch of Cape Town Film

Studios and the massive construction boom

preceding The FIFA World Cup.

As District 9 and the boom in science fiction

and fantasy projects set here shows, South Africa

truly offers the universe in one country.

The South African film industry is currently

worth an estimated R2.65 billion in the Western

Cape, R1.1 billion in Gauteng, and R236 million in

Kwa-Zulu Natal.

By 2014, it is envisioned that South Africa will

be one of the leading producers of film and TV

content from Africa and the Middle East.

The South African government, through the dti, has actively invested in this sector to create

the necessary conducive environment for growth.

As such, we have developed a film production

incentive which is rated among the most efficient

in the world.

The dti regularly reviews this incentive with

industry. This led to the introduction of milestone

payments in 2009 and the doubling of the cap

in 2010, making South Africa a more attractive

production partner than ever before.

We congratulate The Filmmakers Guide to South Africa on their tenth anniversary edition

and look forward to the next ten years of growth.

In the pages that follow, we’ll outline some of the highlights from the decade.

There have been South African connections on some of the most important projects of the last 10 years, from The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, The Lord of the Rings and Slumdog Millionaire to The Hurt Locker, Wolverine and Avatar.

The highlights haven’t come bigger than the FIFA 2010 World Cup, the world’s most watched

sporting event. In addition to the massive global exposure, South

Africa is reaping the benefits from the construction boom that preceded the event: we now offer world-leading stadiums, airports, film studios and hotels to match our incomparable beaches, vineyards, mountains and wildlife.

From first world to third world to science fiction, South Africa offers the universe in one country.

YEAR OF THE CHAMELEON

America: The Story of Us premiered on The History Channel in April 2010 with a foreword from President Barack Obama, bringing the network a record audience of 5.7 million. The show was nominated for four Emmys - Non-fiction Programming: Cinematography, Picture Editing, Sound Editing and Writing. Ironically, the series was shot in South Africa, apart from some establishing shots lensed in the US.

This is just the most recent example of the South Africa’s chameleon-like ability to double as almost anywhere in the world.

America: The Story of Us wasn’t the only production with South African links featured at The Emmy Awards.

South African cinematographers Lee Doig and Mike Yelseth won for their work on Survivor, which featured 13 South African camera crew on its latest season.

The Prisoner, which shot in South Africa and Namibia, was also up for two Emmy Awards: Best Actor (Ian McKellen) and Outstanding Cin-ematography (Florian Hoffmeister).

Endgame received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Made for TV movie; Adrian Bailey and Robyn Keene-Young’s Swamp of the Baboons (aka Swamp Troop) was up for Outstanding Nature Programming; and Nike Human Chain was an Outstanding Commercial finalist.

Human Chain, shot partly in South Africa and starring local athlete Oscar Pistorius, also won a Bronze at Cannes Lions, where the country had a particularly good year.

Egg Films’ Kim Geldenhuys won a Gold for Selinah, an Ogilvy PSA for the Topsy Foundation, while Velocity director Keith Rose’s Allan Gray Legend; Bouffant director Dean Blumberg’s First for Women Insurance So Backwards; and Frolic Swimming Pool, shot here with Metal Tiger, all won Bronze. Productions filmed in South Africa were shortlisted for 33 Cannes Lions in 2010.

South Africa also featured at The Oscars. Moira Meyer was costume supervisor on Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker which won six Academy Awards, in-cluding Best Original Screenplay, Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing, Best Film Editing, Best Direc-tor, and Best Picture. Clint Eastwood’s Invictus was up for Best Actor (Morgan Freeman) and Support-ing Actor (Matt Damon), while Neill Blomkamp’s District 9 was up for Best Picture, VFX, Adapted Screenplay and Editing. In addition, local visual effects artist Ula Rademeyer was the lead texture paint-er on the Oscar and Golden Globe winning, Avatar.

2010 was a record year for the South African film industry, with more than 30 local features released.

Schucks Tshabalala’s Survival Guide to 2010 set a new record at the local box office, making R37.5 million.

As usual, awards followed South African content. Stefanie Sycholt’s Themba-A Boy Called Hope won six; Oli-ver Schmitz’ Life, Above All competed in Un Certain Regard at Cannes and won The Prix Francois Chalais; Uwe Boll’s Darfur won Best International Film at The New York International Film Festi-val; and Sophie Okonedo was nominat-ed for a BAFTA for Mrs. Mandela.

Service work continued to flood in. Pete Travers’ Judge Dredd 3D was the first shoot at Cape Town Film Studios,

South Africa’s new custom-built, Holly-wood style studio.

Other high profile shoots in 2010 included Dark Tide with Halle Berry; Machine Gun Preacher with Gerard Butler; Winnie with Jennifer Hudson and Terrence Howard; and Blue Crush 2 3D, as well as television series like Sky’s Strike Back; BBC’s Outcasts; The Lost Future, starring Sean Bean; and The Sinking of the Laconia for BBC and ARD.

2010 was synonymous with The FIFA World Cup, which won The Judges’ Prize at IBC for becoming the first global sports event to be broadcast in 3D.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter gave the World Cup 9/10. “Nobody in the world is perfect, but the organisation of

this first World Cup in Africa was pretty close,” he said.

The World Cup was aligned with the biggest brands in the world, who all came to Africa to shoot their commercials.

South Africa serviced jobs for the likes of VISA, Nike, adidas, ESPN, Orange, Pepsi, Guinness and Coca-Cola, working with award-winning talent like Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, Emmanuel Lubezki, Lance Acord, Danny Kleinman, and Chris Palmer, among others.

More importantly, the event launched South African culture to the world, who promptly fell in love.

South Africa has a strong stills industry, with local companies expanding into Croatia, Dubai, France, Greece, Mauri-tius, Mozambique, Namibia, Portugal, Spain, Thailand, and Zanzibar.

Our photographers have had a good year, winning awards worldwide.

David Chancellor came third in the People in the News: Stories category at The World Press Photo Contest.

At The Sony World Photographic Awards, South African Brent Stirton was a finalist in the Professional Photojour-nalism and Documentary: Current Affairs category, while Robyn Thompson and Lyndsay Nel were among 12 finalists for its Student Focus Award.

At The One Show, Chris Jordan won two Silvers and a Bronze for his Endan-gered Wildlife Trust campaign, while Andrew Verster Cohen won a Merit

Award for his Mars is no fun campaign for National Geographic Kids Magazine.

Guy Neveling’s National Sea Rescue Institute campaign was featured in the D&AD Design & Art Direction annual.

Robert Watermeyer was included in reGeneration 2: Tomorrow’s Photographer’s Today exhibition in Paris, France.

It’s not just our photographers who collected awards in 2010 though.

Curious Pictures won the Rose d’Or for Best Drama and Mini Series for Hope-ville, the moving story of an alcoholic father who tries to win the love of his son by fixing the local swimming pool.

At Tribeca, Bhekumizi Sibaya’s Father Christmas Doesn’t Come Here, about a young black girl who wants long, straight hair, won Best Short.

Lisa Henry and Shareen Anderson’s Saving Soweto, an eight-part documen-

tary series about the world’s largest hospital in Soweto, won Bronze at The New York Festival’s International Tele-vision and Film Awards.

At The International Wildlife Film Festival, Adrian Bailey and Robyn Keene-Young won Best Newcomer, as well as merit awards for Cinematography, Story-telling, Animal Behaviour and Ecosystem for Swamp Troop, about baboons in Bo-tswana’s Okavango Delta.

Into the Dragon’s Lair, directed by Craig and Damon Foster, was the runner up for The Best Camera Award at The International NaturVision Film Festival and winner of The Excellence in Under-water Cinematography Award at The Blue Ocean Film Festival. The crocodile thriller documentary was also up for two Panda Awards at Wildscreen, where Shoreline and Live Safari were also nominated.

The Durban FilmMart launched this year as a pan-African event in recognition that South Africa isn’t the only film industry on the continent making waves globally.

At Cannes Lions 2010, Egypt won three Silvers and five Bronzes.

At Cannes Film, A Screaming Man, di-rected by Chad’s Mahamet-Saleh Haroun, won the Jury Prize.

This acclaim isn’t new: Ousmane Sem-bene’s Moolade won Un Certain Regard at Cannes in 2004, while Haile Gerima’s Teza won the Special Jury Prize at Venice in 2008.

Nigeria’s booming local industry, Nol-lywood, produces more movies than the industry it’s named after, Hollywood.

At the end of 2009, Variety picked Morocco as their favourite international location, thanks to a CV that includes Babel, Gladiator, Alexander, Black Hawk Down, Kingdom of Heaven, Body of Lies, Troy, The Mummy and Prince of Persia.

Kenya’s growing CV is also impres-sive. Nowhere in Africa won the Best Foreign Film Oscar in 2003, while The Constant Gardener won Rachel Weisz an Academy Award in 2006. In the last decade the country also hosted Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life; The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen; The Wild Thornber-rys Movie; The First Grader; and In a Better World, Denmark’s 2011 Oscar submission.

Namibia welcomed Emmy winning Generation Kill and Emmy nominee The Prisoner, as well as Beyond Borders, Flight of The Phoenix and Tirza, The Netherland’s 2011 Oscar submission. With a dedicated film commission and plans for a state-of-the-art film studio, the region is set to continue to grow.

Forest Whittaker won the Oscar in 2007 for his role as Idi Amin in Last King of Scotland, which shot in Uganda.

Mozambique’s hosted the Oscar- nominated Ali and Blood Diamond .

After Asia, Africa is the world’s second largest and second most-populated con-tinent, home to over a billion people and even more untold stories. In the decade to come, this giant will no longer be sleeping.

What do these global experts have in common: Aardman Animations’ co-founder Dave Sproxton; former Pixar technical director Jessica Abroms; Howl’s Moving Castle casting director Ned Lott; leading British publicist Jonathan Rutter of Premier PR; and award-winning composer Trevor Jones?

They all visited South Africa in 2010 to share their expertise with the booming local film industry as part of Services Sector Educational Training Authority (SSETA) masterclasses.

These masterclasses are just one example of South Africa’s efforts to establish global best practice within the local industry.

SSETA, The Cape Film Commission

and AnimationSA launched The Animation Academy at The False Bay College’s Good Hope Campus in Khayelitsha, a 16-month pilot project to develop young animators in The Western Cape, which included 100 bursaries for underpriviledged students.

This followed The Animation Industry Development Initiative (AIDI), which has seen underpriviledged animators trained and placed in internships at leading South African animation companies, as part of an ambitious plan to create 10 000 jobs within animation by 2030.

SSETA also established an interna-tional reciprocity deal with Skillset, the sector skills council for the creative media industries in the UK. They are working together on skills maps, mutual accredita-

tion, and knowledge-sharing. Most recently, SSETA brought

Entertainment Master Class (EMC) to SA. EMC focuses on formats and the entertainment genre rather than drama. Their Cape Town module explored Entertainment Management.

Speakers included Zimbabwean-born Gary Carter, COO of Fremantle Media; leading researcher and trends scout Keri Lewis Brown; Anna Brakenhielm (Survivor); David Graham, CEO of Attentional; and PR expert Jill Franklin, managing director of Franklin Rae Communications.

With Durban FilmMart and Talent Campus Durban also playing important educational roles, our knowledge-base is improving every year.

FILM AND TELEVISIONPRODUCTION INCENTIVE

The South African government recognises the film industry’s potential. Its growth could have a huge impact on economic development, in terms of employment and exports, while also stimulating supplier industries.

Through The Department of Trade and Industry (the dti), the South African government has invested in this sector through a film production incentive rated among the most efficient in the world.

the dti has now increased its financial support by doubling the cap on its two incentives to R20 million ($2.87 million).

This follows consultation with film industry players, The Industrial Development Corporation, The National Film and Video Foundation, National Treasury and The Department of Arts and Culture, which indicated that the higher cap will be welcomed by all stakeholders.

While the existing incentives had been hugely successful, significant changes in international production made the larger cap necessary.

The recent economic downturn has meant a dramatic reduction in funds available for film production internationally. Fewer films are being made, with significantly lower budgets. This has led to

every major filmmaking region introducing highly competitive incentives to attract the remaining film dollars.

The Film Adjudication Committee accepted the proposal in May 2010, which was signed by the Minister in September 2010.

Unlike most incentives, the film incentive attracts a positive cashflow to the South African fiscus and is self-sustaining.

The initial Film and Television Production Incentive committed R370 million to 49 approved projects between June 2004- January 2008, generating R2 445 million in qualifying South African spend.

This was replaced by The Foreign Film and Television Production Incentive and The South African Film and Television Production and Co-Production Incentive, which have committed R630 million and approved 139 projects, generating R3 279 million in qualifying local spend.

Since launching its first rebate in 2004, the dti has committed R1 billion ($144m) to 188 approved projects.

The Foreign Film and Television Production Incentive is available to foreign productions with qualifying South African spend of R12 million. This provides a 15% rebate of the qualifying spend.

The South African Film and Television Production and Co-Production Incentive is calculated as 35% for the first R6 million of the Qualifying South African spend and 25% for the remainder of the spend for local productions and official treaty co-productions with qualifying South African spend of R2.5 million and above.

50% of principal photography must take place in South Africa to qualify.

The incentives are available for television films and series, as well as features, documentaries and animation.

To assist local producers in improving their cash flow, the dti allows milestone payments for bonded South African film and television productions and co-productions. Completion bond subsidies are also available for projects between R2.5 million and R10 million.

Productions over R10 million are normally required by financiers to have a completion bond, so no additional subsidy will be granted.

Since inception of the local and foreign incentive programmes, the dti has supported various award-winning projects and Hollywood box office successes, including Tsotsi, District 9, Invictus, Blood Diamond, and The Prisoner.

“We’ve always had an exceptionally good experience of the rebates; they’re hassle free and very reliable. The turnover from final submission to pay out

becomes more efficient with each film.” Vlokkie Gordon, Film Afrika

WHERE WERE YOU TEN YEARS AGO? We were four years old, working from a small, one-roomed office in Cape Town, but producing big budget commercials on a scale which one can only dream of today!

HOW HAVE THINGS CHANGED IN THE LAST DECADE? Email wasn’t that prevalent. There was a lot of faxing and mailing the old slow boat style. You weren’t uploading locations and casting to the web like we do now, so you needed a lot more time. You would paste up the locations in a book, make two copies, mail one and wait for weeks for your clients to receive it. Not to mention the posting of large umatic tapes of castings to all corners of the globe!

BIGGEST LEARNING CURVE? HD. It’s not as simple as people think, so we have been concentrating a lot on being at the forefront as formats change.

BIGGEST IMPROVEMENT? Huge leaps in technology.

HIGHLIGHT? Producing Warren Kushner’s SEAT commercial with John McEnroe, which won at Eurobest. And all the great people, the toys and the trips to places like Seychelles, Namibia, Tahiti, Zanzibar and Mali.

TEN YEAR GOAL? To continue to grow every year, but keep that boutique, family feel.

BE PART OF OUR FAMILY!

WHERE WERE YOU TEN YEARS AGO? Living in Johannes-burg with an office in Cape Town. Now the reverse is true. We were filming a feature, Malunde, with Stefanie Sycholt. Ten years later, we have just produced the multi award-winning and theatri-cally released Themba, again directed and written by Stefanie.

HOW HAVE THINGS CHANGED IN THE LAST DECADE? The world has become a smaller place, more global in terms of content, but there’s less finance and fewer options available for independent film nowadays.

BIGGEST LEARNING CURVE? Working with the Industrial Development Corporation and SABC. Understanding the markets our partners operate in and their needs. Taking into account the marketing and distribution requirements.

BIGGEST IMPROVEMENT? The view from our office at The Waterfront. We can step out and view the mountains and the ocean. The dti rebate incentive and Blackberries also get a big thumbs up.

HIGHLIGHT? Producing one of the largest budget television productions at the time – 2003’s Kingdom of Twilight aka Ring of The Nibelungs, which had a vast CGI component with a very large manufacturing demand all in South Africa, from period sets to props to wardrobe to wigs. We dealt with a demanding schedule which required a second unit that continued in the studio after the first unit wrapped, ensuring almost a 24-hour shooting day. The establishment of Table Mountain Motion Picture Studios, which we managed with Nico Dekker for two good and pioneering years. Annual trips to markets and festivals and accolades for meaningful or significant content. Receiving The Cinema for Peace Honorary Award 2011 for Themba – a boy called Hope.

TEN YEAR GOAL? To make memorable films, to create inspiring content, and to be leaders in the coproduction arena by bringing South African and notable stories to the screen. To be part of a sustainable industry and look at new opportunities.

WHERE WERE YOU TEN YEARS AGO? We were a new company with one director. We hadn’t even opened our service division yet.

HOW HAVE THINGS CHANGED IN THE LAST DECADE? The forever-fluctuating rand makes the service industry like a rollercoaster ride. Times were easy when the rand was very weak, but it had a negative effect with costs going up and summer being so busy. It is the good companies that have survived the strong rand and competition as new destinations have opened up. Now we work hard to remain competitive and offer the best service to our clients to keep them coming back.

BIGGEST LEARNING CURVE? Finding a good balance in running a business that is so seasonal. Our directors division dovetails nicely with service, affording us the luxury of being able to maintain a great production team, research department and accounts depart-ment, which makes the business a lot easier.

BIGGEST IMPROVEMENT? It has to be technology and the internet. What we can do with a Mac, a camera and a broadband connection is amazing.

HIGHLIGHT? In 2001, being included in The Gunn Report Top 25 Most Awarded Production Companies for the first time. We have been included a few more times since then, but the first time was special and something we hadn’t even considered. Kim being in Shots’ list of the 100 Most Creative Minds in 2007 and winning a Gold at Cannes Lions in 2010.

TEN YEAR GOAL? To be exactly where we are now, working with a great bunch of people who love what they do, doing great creative work with our directors and foreign production houses that we have built up relationships with over the years.

PHILOSOPHYIs one of service excellence. Driven by hands-on management with clear, transparent and rigorous financial control.

AFFILIATIONS• Camanol Film Productions: Production service company, BVI• Fiction Film & Television: Producer-financier: UK

WHERE WERE YOU TEN YEARS AGO? We were making Second Skin, a Darrell Roodt noir thriller starring Natasha Henstridge and Peter Fonda. This was the first movie aimed at an international audience with South Africans in all the key roles, other than a few of the cast. We’d just started co-producing with Germans and Canadians, who were the first countries to give South Africa a shot. Our first wholly American serviced film came the following year: Styx in 2001, which unleashed a chain of American financed movies.

HOW HAVE THINGS CHANGED IN THE LAST DECADE? Movies have got bigger while the budgets keep getting smaller! We used to work with crews of between 30 and 50. Now it starts around 80 people. Production had a more leisurely pace. You’d send off an agreement or letter by fax and get a response in two days. Now if you don’t respond within ten minutes, everyone gets nervous.

BIGGEST LEARNING CURVE? That we are managing people, not movies.

BIGGEST IMPROVEMENT? The introduction of the rebate. The skill of our crews, all round.

HIGHLIGHT? The satisfaction of seeing people grow within the industry, step into their power and find their voice. Everything else pales in comparison. We have received numerous international awards, including a Life Time Achievement from my peers. Yet it’s our movies I am most proud of – they outlive all the awards.

TEN YEAR GOAL? On a personal level, it’s about getting back to my roots as a writer and director by becoming more of a creative producer. On a company level, the challenge is to balance the need to bring in a new generation with remaining committed to those who have been with us since the beginning.

Grinder Films is Cape Town’s only dedicated tabletop studio: specialists in food, liquid and product commercials. Home to tabletop and performance director/DOP Rob Payton, the studio is available for both full-service productions and dry-hire rentals.

WHERE WERE YOU TEN YEARS AGO? Living and working in Munich as a producer, bringing tabletop work from Pepsico to Alche-my in Cape Town. Rob was shooting and directing documentaries and commercials in London. I was aware of his work but it wasn’t till I moved back to Cape Town and Rob emigrated here that we actually met. That’s when the idea for Grinder was born.

HOW HAVE THINGS CHANGED IN THE LAST DECADE? In the tabletop world, it has changed beyond recognition. We used to shoot high speed on PhotoSonics, which were un-wealdy beasts developed for military testing. They would churn through 1 000 ft of 35mm fi lm in 18 seconds and the lighting requirements were unbelievable. For a producer, it was nerve racking and a far cry from the Phantom Flex systems here today. Artistically there is now much more integration of product and live action, so we enjoy much more creative input.

BIGGEST LEARNING CURVE? Starting Grinder after being a photographer and producer all my life has been a near vertical learning curve – between us we need to keep on top of the ever-changing landscape of cameras, post, and shooting styles.

BIGGEST IMPROVEMENT? Digital cameras. You can see what you get on set. Risk and costs have come down and quality has gone up. The food technology and the substitutes we use have also improved greatly.

HIGHLIGHT? Having clients watch our showreel montage and ask if it’s lunchtime. That’s the emotion great tabletop’s supposed to evoke.

TEN YEAR GOAL? To become one of the most respected food and product facilities in the world – a real centre for excellence. To streamline productions so they do not split their shoots but fi lm their product and food shots at Grinder while doing the live action in Cape Town.

Metal Tiger Productions is a streamlined production company offering huge experience without the expensive frills. The core team, consisting of Liz O’Shaughnessy and Tracy Raubenheimer, does all the preliminary research to avoid unnecessary extra costs, with Liz doing all the budgeting herself. Metal Tiger has wonderful relationships with the top freelance crews and suppliers, bringing the right people on board for each job. The company also uses stringent accounting practices to ensure fast, efficient and transparent reconciling of all jobs. And, of course, as Noel Coward said, “Work is more fun than fun!”

WhERE WERE yOU TEN yEARS AGO? Running a very successful production house for someone else. I started Metal Tiger in 2004.

hOW hAVE ThINGS ChANGED IN ThE LAST DECADE? 20 years ago our equipment was pretty basic, whereas now we have cutting-edge technology, both for film and digital.

BIGGEST LEARNING CURVE? The big move to digital.

BIGGEST IMPROVEMENT? Running my own company. And video take off technology!

hIGhLIGhT? Every job has its own highlight. For example, in March this year we shot a spec commercial for Frolic Dog Food for Quad Productions, with absolutely no money, which went on to win a Bronze Lion in June for director Jerome Langlade and the Quad team. I think that being able to work with so many of the top people in the various creative fields is in itself always a highlight - tremendously exciting and invigorating!

WHERE WERE YOU TEN YEARS AGO? 2 000 was a great year for Moonlighting. We were recently extricated from a listed company and rejuvenated after the process. New producers came on board and we grew from there to be the company we are today. There is generally something positive that comes from trying times.

HOW HAVE THINGS CHANGED IN THE LAST DECADE? 10 years ago, we were the only southern hemisphere destination worth visiting, as South America hadn’t come online yet. The commercials service market was still growing. We are now in a mature market and have had to be a lot more competitive. Long form is on a strong growth path through, having added good government incentives to an already attractive shooting environment.

BIGGEST LEARNING CURVE? Reinvent yourself without moving away from your core product. Work smarter and continually improve. In the features market, we have had to become co-producers to gain access to the subsidy programs. Coming from a pure service-based business, it was a fairly radical advance.

BIGGEST IMPROVEMENT? System development, like an online order and bookkeep-ing system. We have built a flexible, responsive and highly skilled staff complement.

HIGHLIGHT? Our success expanding into Chile. We had learnt a lot from operating in Romania and used this to our best advantage.

TEN YEAR GOAL? To remain at the top of the pile in production services and find complementary, new ways to grow, like ReelPay, our payroll company, and Grinder, our tabletop company. To keep finding ways to manage that growth and keep all Moonlighting participants happy with their association with us.

Established nine years ago, Razor Sharp Films specialises in international production for commercials and stills, TV, fi lm and docu-mentaries. Razor Sharp Films offers quick, cost-effective solutions for each production with a team that is hands-on and professional from start to fi nish.

WHERE WERE YOU TEN YEARS AGO? I was helping run another production company. We were one of 20 in SA; now we’re one of 250, maybe 300. I started Razor Sharp Films in 2002.

HOW HAVE THINGS CHANGED IN THE LAST DECADE? We’re less reliant on Europe and are doing more business with emerging territories like Russia and India. We can do so much more here. Every year, South Africa has more and more to offer.

BIGGEST LEARNING CURVE? Business acumen; running my own company. Reinventing ourselves on a continual basis through the ups and the downs, through the rand getting stronger and the rand getting weaker, to keep people coming back.

BIGGEST IMPROVEMENT? Access to information. I can access so many more production companies now; everyone has an ID online.

HIGHLIGHT? We do victory dances every time we win a new board with a new client. Working with some of the best people in the world and meeting these amaz-ing creative people on every job. And making The Bird Can’t Fly and seeing it travel the world and win awards – I’ve wanted to make movies since I was a little girl.

TEN YEAR GOAL? To expand the company abroad. To diversify my business, so I’m making a few movies and doing more TV as well as servicing commercials and stills.

WHERE WERE YOU TEN YEARS AGO? A high-end VFX facility, servicing commer-cials and feature films, that completed the first D.I. in SA

HOW HAVE THINGS CHANGED IN THE LAST DECADE? Never the same job twice. While film remains the best origination medium, we have completely embraced the digital camera technology. Each shoot has a different camera and different work-flow.

BIGGEST LEARNING CURVE? The management of data and addressing the percep-tion that digital is quick. 3D stereo is going to be our next big leap.

BIGGEST IMPROVEMENT? The speed of moving data internally on networks and internationally. The tools to achieve realistic, crafted VFX as though the director shot them in camera.

HIGHLIGHT? So many, like Tsotsi, which won an Oscar for Best Foreign Film. So many people around the world were completely fascinated by it.

TEN YEAR GOAL? To make SA a post production capital of the world. We’ve hosted a World Cup; it’s time for a large, CG-intensive film.

WHERE WERE YOU TEN YEARS AGO? We were building the company on local retail work and only started moving into service work from 2003.

HOW HAVE THINGS CHANGED IN THE LAST DECADE? Ten years ago, we passed on a R26 million commercial with 500 horses that was the biggest commercial ever done in South Africa at the time. We’re blatantly honest, so we told the client we couldn’t do the job. Based on that honesty, he appointed us as his local representative and we helped them decide which company got the job. We’ve built up the company significantly since then and opened a branch in Dubai.

BIGGEST LEARNING CURVE? Teamwork within the framework of debate always wins.

BIGGEST IMPROVEMENT? Since Craig and Murray joined in 2001, we’ve kept basically the same team for a decade, so there’s a lot of experience and the confidence that comes with it. Email has made it incredibly easy to contact anybody, anywhere on the planet, whereas historically you would have to phone illusive agency producers and set up hard-to-get appointments.

HIGHLIGHT? A Sipchem job Jorge Rubia directed. That was technically as difficult as any commercial could ever be, but each and every member found their strength and just gelled. Straight after that, we did Nokia Walk of Life with Hadi, which won awards across the world, and we moved from a good reel to a great reel.

TEN YEAR GOAL? We’re shooting our first feature film this year and also working on a big studio family film set in The Okavango Delta. We’re also grooming young talent; we need people with fresh ideas, who challenge you over things they shouldn’t. We started as friends, we’re still friends, and we’d like to stay friends.

WHERE WERE YOU TEN YEARS AGO? We were two-years-old, the workload was huge, and there was more money around. I didn’t have any clue about self-preservation; I nearly killed myself.

HOW HAVE THINGS CHANGED IN THE LAST DECADE? My cellphone used to be the size of my laptop now, so technology has definitely changed. Digital is here. There’s so much expertise around now and people have specialised a lot more.

BIGGEST CHALLENGE? As a service destination, we need to keep showing clients something new – new talent, new locations. Keep it fresh.

BIGGEST IMPROVEMENT? Being online. You can back up everything you’re saying with images and references instantly, so there’s no confusion about what you’re saying. There’s so much you can do before the client even arrives.

HIGHLIGHT? Working with Wim Wenders. Whenever I get a board from a client, I’m happy. It means they’re coming back to me and to South Africa, so we’re doing something right.

TEN YEAR GOAL? To remain current. To make a movie, which I’ve never wanted to do until recently.

WHERE WERE YOU TEN YEARS AGO? We’d been in South Africa for five years. In 2 000, we took the company over from our German partners, so it was our first year on our own.

HOW HAVE THINGS CHANGED IN THE LAST DECADE? We’ve been able to spoil our foreign clients more and more. Cast, crew, hotel availability, transport, trailers, and general logistics – everything has become better and more professional.

BIGGEST LEARNING CURVE? To convert commercials crew into long form and combine the structure from the South Africa industry with foreign expectations, so they understand what you need and don’t need here.

BIGGEST IMPROVEMENT? The Department of Trade and Industry rebate scheme. It helped to position us as co-producers.

HIGHLIGHT? After more than 50 TV and event movies, it was a highlight to shoot both of The Three Investigators for the big screen, something we continued with Albert Schweitzer. But our biggest and most challenging project was The Sinking of The Laconia, a German/British production for ARD and The BBC.

TEN YEAR GOAL? We want to continue co-producing and servicing foreign work, but we have also started to develop our own scripts.

WHERE WERE YOU TEN YEARS AGO? In 2 000, Laurence Mitchell was head of the SABC in the Western Cape, while Gary Edwardes was running a business in Tzaneen and only dreamt about the film industry. Sasani Studios and The Refinery were based here. Condor Cape was only started in 2003 and Waterfront Studios, Condor’s partnership with The Refinery, began in 2006.

HOW HAVE THINGS CHANGED IN THE LAST DECADE? There was a big swing from film to digital. Three years ago we did 8 ½ million foot; we do six million now. But seven years ago, if we did five feature films that was a lot, whereas now we do 18 to 23.

“Waterfront Studios serves the full spectrum of post production – from the day you wrap the shoot until you send the finished commercial or put the movie up on a cinema screen. We’re the biggest and best one-stop post house in South Africa. No-one else has a creative team as large or varied as ours or our technological infrastructure.”

BIGGEST LEARNING CURVE? The move from film to digital. When HD was launched about 20 years ago, everyone said there would soon be no more PAL or NTSC, just HD, one standardised format worldwide. We did a rough calculation the other day and with the different manufacturers, the different frame rates, and the different CODECs, we came up with 600 variants. Every day, the workflow changes.

BIGGEST IMPROVEMENT? Bones Dailies took away the need to sync and log in telecine and allowed us to create a whole raft of deliverables.

HIGHLIGHT? Scorpion King 2: Rise of the Akkadian kickstarting us into long form VFX, which has continued with Hansie, Lost City Raiders, Bitch Slap, Lost Boys 3 and Dark Tide. Working on Allan Gray Legend for Keith Rose, which won The Loeries’ Grand Prix and a Silver at Cannes Lions. Acquiring Clockwork Zoo as a world-class 2D animation studio. Moving into online with NGage and Imagine. Creating live-enabled broadcast studios and helping Okuhle make HecticNine9 the biggest youth show in South Africa.

TEN YEAR GOAL? To be a people-centered facility, which revolves around the talent and the work, not just the technology. Our work needs to speak for itself.
