Why study the finished work of Christ? 1. It gives us assurance in a world that offers none. Heb 6:18,19 2. The key to the Christian life is not first doing but first resting in what Christ as already done. Heb 4 3. It is the right order of things: First position, then we walk in obedience, then we stand against the enemy. Ephesians 1-6 4. It motivates us to persevere in the faith and to do good works. Hebrews 12:1,2

What did Jesus mean when HE said it is finished? Did He mean His life was over? Or maybe it was what John had written earlier? John 17:4) I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do. Lets look at the event

Mat 27:45) Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness over all the land Mark 15:33) Now when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. Luke 23:44) Now it was about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.

Mat 27:46) And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is, My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me? Mark 15:34) And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is translated, My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?

John 19:28) After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, I thirst! 30) So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, It is finished! And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit. Mat 27:50) And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, (John 19:38 He said, It is finished!) and yielded up His spirit.

Mark 15:37) And Jesus cried out with a loud voice, (He said, It is finished!) and breathed His last. Luke 23:46) And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice (He said, It is finished!) He said, Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit. Having said this, He breathed His last.

Mat 27:51) Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; Mark 15:38) Then the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. Luke 23:45 Then the sun was darkened, (He said, It is finished!) and the veil of the temple was torn in two. and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split, 52) and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised;

53) and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many. 54) So when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God!

These are the events surrounding the words It is finished! 1. Darkness world wide. This always seems to be a symbol of judgment with God; Gen 15:12) Now when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and behold, horror and great darkness fell upon him.

13 Then He said to Abram: Know certainly that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, and will serve them, and they will afflict them four hundred years. 14 And also the nation whom they serve I will judge; afterward they shall come out with great possessions. Exodus 10:21) Then the LORD said to Moses, Stretch out your hand toward heaven, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, darkness which may even be felt.

Heb 12:18) For you have not come to the mountain that may be touched and that burned with fire, and to blackness and darkness and tempest, Joel 2:31) The sun shall be turned into darkness, And the moon into blood, Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the LORD.

Rev 16:10) Then the fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast, and his kingdom became full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues because of the pain. 2. Jesus cries out; My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me? 3. Then there is a series of loud cries in which He cries out, IT Is Finished.

There are a total of 7 times Finished is used in the gospels. Five times it is teleo (tel-eh'-o) Two times it is teleioo (tel-ei- oh'-o) There is a slight difference in the two words = to make perfect in character. = to end It is finished is = to make an end!

Out of all the times it is used in the gospels, it is only here where it is used different. All the others usages are aorist active but here it is a perfect passive. In all the others the individual finished the action in the past. In the perfect passive it means the individual is being acted upon and it is finished completely and the results are continuing on in full effect.

In other words; it is fully finished, it is now finished and there is NOTHING ELSE NEEDED EVER!

Rom 5:15) But the free gift is not like the offense. For if by the one mans offense many died, much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded to many. 16) And the gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned. For the judgment which came from one offense resulted in condemnation,

but the free gift which came from many offenses resulted in justification. 17) For if by the one mans offense death reigned through the one, Think about it:

19) For as by one mans disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Mans obedience many will be made righteous. John 1:29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! 2 Cor 5:19 that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, 1 John 2:2 And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.

20) Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more, 21) so that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

How sure is death because of Adam? How many times does it prove true? If death was sure 100% of the time and something else was much more sure, what would you conclude? Its sad but many live in doubt of Christs finished work. Are you sure your going to die? Are you sure that in Christ your going to live? Remember: it is much more sure! 100%

1Cor 15:22) For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive. 23) But each one in his own order: 1. Christ the firstfruits, 2. afterward those who are Christs at His coming.

1Cor 15:20) But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21) For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. Ever wonder what First fruits mean? Exodus 34:22 And you shall observe the Feast of Weeks, of the firstfruits of wheat harvest, and the Feast of Ingathering at the years end.

Revelation 1:5 and from Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn from among the dead, the ruler over the kings of the earth. To the one who loves us and has set us free from our sins at the cost of his own blood 6) and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
