Ever read one of those “How ToWrite A Bestseller” books? No? Meneither. Nor do I intend to. I’mafter bigger game, you see. I wantto write a phenomenon. A freak. Abestseller that pulls down theshorts of other bestsellers andgives their chubby paper bottoms apalm-stinging spank.

Alas, before I realise, there comes a seminal momentwhen I realise I’ve had a little too much to drink...Absinthe...and I begin to drift.

I peer into the darkness, waiting for Ana Silvera...

waiting, I foolishly believe, to be underwhelmed...

HUSH...she’s so little...a sparrow, dressed all insparkle black, beautiful as string picking fingers, check her tuning all in a flurry of magical trance...

Modern Masterpieces13 December - 22 January 2011

We present two contemporary artists creating workin the traditional medium of painting: Katie Tunn andMark Metcalfe.

Poking fun at what we consider vulgar and how weappreciate things with age, local artist Katie Tunnexhibits her series of recognisable National Gallerypostcards, altered with paint to include some of thetrappings of modern consumer society. How do wefeel about these symbols of our modern consumerculture invading such revered works and would theold masters have included them if they had beenpainting today?

Mark Metcalfe’s paintings reflect a preoccupationwith memory and nostalgia, where an image canposit a peculiar melancholy or sense of the uncanny, through a memorialization of the past. Metcalfe’spaintings, prints and sculptural works are densewith memory and cultural emblems we canrecognise, whilst equally implying a new andperhaps foreign language of myth and allegory.

Martina Lindqvist and Tim SullivanUntil Sat 18 September

Jerwood Photography Prize 2008 Winner MartinaLindqvist's project A Thousand Little Suns isinfluenced by an interest in spatial psychology, andmore precisely the emotive effects of landscapes andforested wilder land. It takes a contemplative look atthe northern landscapes of Ostrobothnia in centralFinland, which during the autumn and winter monthsshould be shrouded by an impenetrable darkness, butinstead finds itself lit by a thousand glowing lights. The lights are neither natural nor intentional, but a by-product of an armada of industrial sized greenhousesscattered around the area, changing it into somethingweird and alien - something that seems impossible tothe rational mind.

Aidan McNeill:Non-Native Invasive and the Ha-Project

Mon 1 November - Sat 11 December

Canadian artist Aidan McNeill’s photography series'Non-Native Invasive' investigates species placed onthe English DEFRA list for control and eradication.Beautiful images of the condemned plants aredisplayed with photo-montages of UK controlledspecies.

Aidan’s photographic work deals with geographyand is anchored in history and portraiture. Herpractice is about collective experience; what it is tobe human within a period of technologicaldominance and how that affects or displaces certainlandscapes and activities.

Showing in the Micro-Gallery is a slide show of TheHa-Project, a collaborative online dialogue ofphotographic images between Aidan and Finnishartist Hanna Korhonen.
