PEOPLE ON THE WAY

Martin Luther King, Jr., renewer of society, martyr (January 15, 1929–April 4, 1968) Dr. King is remembered as an American prophet of justice among races and nations, a Christian whose faith undergirded his advocacy of vigorous yet nonviolent action for racial equality. A pastor of churches in Montgomery, Alabama and Atlanta, Georgia, his witness was taken into the streets in such other places as Birmingham, Alabama, where he was jailed while protesting against segregation. He preached nonviolence and demanded that love be returned for hate. Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, he was killed by an assassin on April 4, 1968. Though most commemorations are held on the date of a person’s death, many churches remember Dr. King near his birth date. Our nation will pause to remember him next week. Why not join in this remembrance by participating in the National Day of Service on Monday, January 20th here at our church?

THE ECUMENICAL PRAYER CYCLE focuses the prayers of Christians week by week, so that over the year all the countries of the world are prayed for. This week we pray for Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Yemen. We are thankful for:

Those who continue to pursue peace in the midst of ethnic strife and terrorism;

The faithfulness of Muslims in expressing their faith and working with others;

Christians who practice their faith even when they are a small, often discriminated minority.

For more information about the Prayer Cycle, visit the website of the World Council of Churches: www.oikoumene.org

OUR MISSION PARTNERSHIP PRAYER CYCLE FOR 2020 We pray for the churches and pastors of Baltimore Presbytery.

Make check payable to “First Presbyterian of Howard County.” Donations for postage can be dropped off in the church office. All can participate! Thank you!

PER CAPITA FOR 2020 is $36.00. The “Per Capita” is each church member’s share of the expenses of the larger church – the Presbytery, the Synod and General Assembly of the PCUSA. Our congregation is required to pay this amount for each member of the church. First Presbyterian Church of Howard County is faithful in fully paying our congregation’s apportionment. A contribution of $36.00 from every member would mean $20,520 which could be put to work in other ways in our congregation’s ministries this year. Have you paid your per capita? Thank you to those who have paid already!
