AIRTV is a project born in Barcelona, Spain, from the lack of video channels dedicated to the residencies of artists. The phenomenon of artists residencies is growing fast and worldwide, reducing the areas without such

places.

AIRTV aims to map all those amazing creative spaces and present each of them with a video of introduction. It would greatly help artists, art lovers, but also the residencies to differentiate one from another. We do believe

in the unique set of skills, people and services that residencies offer to promote art and culture, and the power of images to reach larger audiences.

The project also comes from a passion for traveling and an urge to meet and connect new cultures and people, new visions and opinions, new insights and lifestyles, as to have a good overview of the artist residence

sector on the international scale.

What is AIRTV?

AIRTV is a Web Television dedicated to residencies of artists. The vision of AIRTV is to equally promote all residencies by offering a platform on which each of them have the opportunity to present itself in short videos accessible to all audiences.

The aim of AIRTV is to broadcast videos presenting the residencies infrastructures, interviews of the different actors of the space and the artists in residence, and bring them to think on actual topics related to the contemporary arts, the concept of residence and the presentation of new trends in the field of arts.

Why creating AIRTV?

The project initially started with the will to help residencies to promote themselves. There are various networks and communities presenting or rating the residencies and editing the latest deadlines and open calls for artists-in-residence programs. With AIRTV, there is an opportunity of promotion in another framework.

Video is also one of the clear trends of today; according to a report from Cisco, IP video traffic will be 82% of all consumer Internet traffic by 2020, up from 70% in 2015. This supports the idea that a Web Tv dedicated to art residencies could be successful with a good strategy and development.

The artist residence sector is not represented by any kind of dedicated media or platform such as what AIRTV fosters. The existing platforms, guides, mapping and communities dedicated to the AIR world do not present any recurrent audiovisual contents. On another mind, there are several events organised around the world about and for artist residencies, which is an opportunity for AIRTV to settle in as the official social video media.

Furthermore, there is a debate around the fact that some residencies may not be “as advertised” online. Video is a good mean to have an overview of what a residence facility and atmosphere looks like, additionally to interviews and comments coming directly from the actors of that residence.

Positioning of AIRTV

AIRTV positions itself as a social video media and a referencing art channel. It aims to collaborate with the existing networks on which the residencies are already a member, and give an added-value to their contents. The platform aims to have an international scope by giving an overview of artists residencies around the globe, with video contents available in English, French and Spanish.

There are very few regular video channels dedicated to the arts, none about artists residencies and therefore no equivalent to what AIRTV offers. Nonetheless, there is a very high activity and traffic on the different online platforms presenting artistic residency content.

What does AIRTV provide ?

The platform will provide additional value and benefits for residencies, artists and cultural professionals by:

• Creating an active platform of videos streaming artists residencies, their infrastructures and actors, artists, inaugurations, professionals interviews, cultural events such as ongoing conferences, roundtables and debates.

• Creating multimedia content to broadcast in the medias (local, national, international). • Developing a community where actors can broadcast their former contents as well as live video on the platform. • Increasing the awareness about artists residencies: opportunities, challenges, trends, opinions… by creating topics, reports, files,

documentaries...

AIRTV offers to residencies the opportunity to show who they are, and to the audience the ability to have a closer look at what the residencies really look like, from the facility to the staff and actors working within it.

Around 1.700 artists residencies are disseminated on the planet. From mega-residencies to nano-residencies, some are strongly anchored to the existing networks while others stay below the radar and are only known by few former artists. Latin America is nowadays competing 10% of the global artists residencies offer.

AIRTV will start by covering South and Central America since in the last two decades, those regions has shown a great interest in this new AIR phenomenon. However, Latin America is still an underestimated territory by the global art market, even though being extremely dynamic in the fields of culture and arts. We believe that by starting in this particular area, our chances to create a strong network for international residencies would have an impact on the long term latin American market, and could allow AIRTV to become a major worldwide player in less than two years.

Besides, the lack of strong international networks present in South America and the weak unity among the platforms dedicated to latin American artist’s residencies are factors that lead us to believe in the need to start with this continent. Indeed, the existing networks haven’t been able to list all the ongoing residencies at once, which is an opportunity to work with them to overcome this matter.

The first phase of the project will take about 12 to 18 months, considering there are more than 150 residencies in about 13 countries. The unity of language (exception made of Brazil) will facilitate the relations to build with the residencies, the professionals and the local scenes.

Sky is the limit!

AIRTV is a French initiative, born in Barcelona with the project to partially cover Spain and Portugal as starting areas in order to build strong relationships that will allow collaborations with Latin America first, then North America, before taking it back to Europe, creating an international network with the goal of reinforcing the communities already in motion today.

It is why the second step empowered by the proximity with the United States of America and the Canada, will bring AIRTV to carry on its artistic journey to the North American residencies, which represent one-fifth of the global art residencies market.

On the long term, AIRTV will base the organisation in Europe which represents alone half of the residencies market, and focus on developing European and international collaborations by gathering a larger team that will spread the coverage of the Web Tv to residencies in other regions of the world, and by creating events across Europe with the aim to reflect on current topics related to contemporary arts, the concept and evolution of artist residencies, and the latest trends in the arts.

AIRTV artistic journey’s blog

The great opportunities that represent those long term trips to meet new people, cultures and lifestyles will be the occasion for the production of longer videos on the founders’ journey. AIRTV plans to expand the contents of the website to the local art and culture area in which the residency implant itself in order to feed the blog section of its website and create a closer proximity with the local scenes.

Finally, the edition of a documentary video on each of the world’s visited regions will be edited and proposed to local and national channels to raise awareness in the countries crossed.

Vladimir de Vaumas Co-founder of AIRTV

Ensuing Art Market studies at the EAC School Paris (École des métiers de l'Art et de la Culture), Vladimir worked for international galleries in Paris, as well as journalist, and collaborated with Art Media Agency, one of the largest press relay for the art market in France, and Expertisez.com first website in private expertise.

Vladimir worked during few years for the artists' residence Espronceda, Center for Art and Culture (Barcelona), engaging with contemporary art and the phenomenon of artists' residence. He wrote a thesis on the following subject: « The phenomenon of artists’ residency: fundings and evolution of the commercial practices, could the residences play a role on the art market? » .

Alexandra Christev Co-founder of AIRTV

After studying press relations and communication, Alexandra graduated from an Event Management Master’s degree at Sup de Pub Paris and worked for an event agency, Novell’Art and international multidisciplinary festivals (Japan Expo, Comic Con’ Paris, Ravensare) as part of the production and programming team.

After moving to Barcelona, Alexandra graduated from an Arts and Cultural Management Master’s degree at the UIC (International University of Catalunya), and worked in production and logistics for the performing arts residence, La Central del Circ. Currently, Alexandra is part of the program Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs which allows her to dedicate full-time to the creation of AIRTV.
