The flora of Yıldız Mountains (Kırklareli) Biosphere Project area

1. IntroductionTurkey-in-Europe (Thrace, European Turkey) occupies the south-eastern extension of the Balkan Peninsula, towards Asia, and is separated from it by 2 straits—the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles—and the Sea of Marmara. It covers an area of 23,500 km2 and is surrounded by the sea in the north-east, east, and south. In comparison with Turkey’s general topography, it typically has only low elevations; however, the landscape and habitat diversity is greater (mountains, forests, wet and dry plains, lakes, rivers, marshes, and sea shores). This contributes to the formation of a rich flora that comprises about 2350 species (2550 taxa, taking account of subspecies and varieties) according to the list of Webb (1966) and Flora of Turkey (Davis 1965–1985; Davis et al., 1988; Güner et al., 2000), as well as recently published papers and the specimens kept in the ISTE and EDTU.

In the north-east of the region, the Yıldız mountain range (Istranca mountains) extends from south-east Bulgaria into European Turkey, where its highest elevation reaches 1035 m (Mahya Dağı). This range borders the Black Sea and represents a low westerly continuation of Anatolia’s northern Black Sea mountains. It is largely composed of schists and covered with forest vegetation

with humid northern slopes supporting Fagus orientalis Lipsky. forest and Rhododendron ponticum L. scrub. The forests of Yıldız Mountain (Strandzha) belong to the south Euxine floristic subregion of the Central European floristic region (Horvat et al., 1974). The floristic study of the Istranca (Yıldız) mountains was carried out by Yarcı in 1996 and 1997, and the results were published (Yarcı, 1997, 1999). The studied area is a part of the Yıldız Mountains Biosphere Project area. Yarcı’s collection is kept in the EDTU and is cited in the list given in the appendix.

The Yıldız Mountains Biosphere Reserve Project is located in the north-west corner of Turkey, in European Turkey. The overall aim of the project is “sustainable cross-border cooperation, developed and strengthened for conservation and sustainable development of natural resources and biodiversity of the Yıldız mountains”. Its purpose is to deliver landscape-scale protection of the biodiversity of the Yıldız mountains in the long term. As part of the inventory and management planning of the biosphere reserve, plant diversity was investigated using the available data and field work. The majority of the Bulgarian region of the mountains (1161 km2) was established as the Strandzha Natural Park in 1995.

Abstract: A floristic study of the Yıldız Mountains Biosphere Project was undertaken between May and October 2009. The project area is located in the north-eastern part of European Turkey, within flora square A1–A2 (E) (Kırklareli), and covers about 1300 km2. The list of vascular plants was prepared mainly based on specimens collected during the flora surveys of the Project and supplemented by earlier gathered specimens kept in the EDTU, ISTE, and ISTO herbaria. In the project area 1315 taxa, belonging to 505 genera and 113 families, were determined. Among these, 18 taxa are Pteridophytes, 4 Gymnospermae, 1035 Dicotyledones, and 258 Monocotyledones. The 3 largest families are Compositae (153 taxa; 11.5%), Leguminosae (119 taxa; 9.1%), and Graminae (102 taxa; 7.9%). The richest genus is Trifolium (62 taxa). Among the more significant finds of this floristic survey of the research area are 15 endemic taxa for Turkey and 29 taxa that are not recorded in the Asiatic part of Turkey, a new species for plant science (Allium rumelicum M.Koçyiğit & N.Özhatay), 3 new records for Turkey (Allium saxatile M.Bieb., Anthoxanthum aristatum Boiss., and Elatine triandra Schkuhr), and 8 new records for European Turkey.

2. Materials and methodsIn order to prepare a list of the vascular plants within the Yıldız Mountains Biosphere Project area, plant specimens were collected from the study area, which covers 1300 km2 (Figure 1). Additionally, all relevant records from key herbaria and related literature have been computerised.2.1. Field workThe field work focused on hot spots determined (Figure 1) during the project development phase, due to the limited time and resources available. The sites were identified by botanical experts as confirmed or potential plant hot spots based on one or more of the following criteria: 1- the presence of populations of rare, threatened, or endemic species; 2- the presence of an exceptionally high diversity of species; and 3- the presence of threatened habitat(s).

Hot spots 1–4 were investigated from a floristic point of view during other recently completed projects (GEF II and UNESCO). Plant specimens were collected from hot spots 5–12 during May–October 2009 by the project teams. In total, 2547 plant specimens were collected from 266 localities during 52 days of field work.

Specimens collected at different times from the Project area by Project teams and various researchers following herbaria EDTU, ISTE, ISTF, ISTO, and MUFE. All locations are summarised in Appendix I.

2.2. Database 2.2.1. Survey of related literature and available herbarium records and computerisation Earlier herbarium records of specimens collected from the Project area and kept in the ISTE and EDTU herbaria were computerised, and a database was created.2.2.2. Previously published papersSeveral projects, theses, and papers were published on the flora of the Project area and neighbouring areas (Stefanoff, 1921, 1924; Turrill, 1924; Stojanov, 1928; Tutin et al., 1964–1980; Davis 1965–1985; Davis et al., 1988; Webb, 1966; Dönmez, 1968; Demiriz et al., 1969; Baytop, 1973a, 1973b, 1981, 1986; Özhatay, 1975; Kurter, 1983; Seçmen & Leblebici, 1991; Başak, 1993; Alpınar, 1994; Baytop & Byfield, 1997; Yarcı, 1997, 1999; Güner et al., 2000; Grauter & Raus, 2002; Özhatay et al., 2003; Başak & Kıyıcı, 2004; Tzonev et al., 2005; Özhatay & Kültür, 2006; Kavgacı, 2007; Kavgacı et al., 2007; Yılmaz & Dane, 2007; Özhatay et al., 2009; Yıldız, 2009; Doğan et al., 2010; Güler et al., 2010; Özhatay et al., 2011; Akçiçek et al., 2012).

Two projects were carried out in the research area. One of them is GEF II Project, coordinated by Prof. Dr. H. Duman in 2005: Flora and Vegetation of Republic of Turkey, Ministry of Nature and Forestry, Biodiversity and Natural Resource Management Project. The other Project

is UNESCO Project, The List of the Project Conservation and Sustainable Use of Biodiversity in Stranca (Yildiz)/Strandza Mountain – Challenges and Opportunities for Promotion and Implementation of the Transboundary Biosphere Reserve Concept by Dr Metin Karadağ and Mehtap Öztekin MSc in 2009.

3. Results and discussionA total of 1364 vascular plant taxa, 796 of those determined by the current project, are listed from the Project area (Appendix II). This inventory was prepared mainly based on the 2547 specimens collected during the flora surveys and supplemented with taxa records cited in Flora of Turkey (Davis, 1965–1985; Davis et al., 1988; Güner et al., 2000), The Flora of European Turkey (Webb, 1966), related papers, Project reports, theses, and the collected specimens kept in the ANKO, EDTU, GAZI, ISTE, ISTF, ISTO, and MUFE herbaria.

In the Project area 1315 taxa, 1227 species, 286 subspecies, and 111 varieties belonging to 505 genera and 113 families were determined. There were 18 taxa belonging to Pteridophyta; the remaining 1297 taxa are Spermatophyta, including 4 Gymnospermae taxa, 1035 Dicotyledonae taxa, and 258 Monocotyledonae taxa. The largest families in terms of number of genera are Compositae (57 genera), Graminae (46 genera), and Umbelliferae (32 genera). The richest families in terms of number of taxa at the species, subspecies, and variety ranks are Compositae (153 taxa), Leguminosae (119 taxa), and Graminae (102 taxa). The richest genera in terms of number of taxa at species, subspecies, and variety ranks are Trifolium (62 taxa), Vicia (35 taxa), Allium (24 taxa), Euphorbia, and Carex (22 taxa).

A total of 15 taxa are endemic to Turkey (Allium rumelicum, Anchusa leptophylla subsp. incana, Asperula littoralis, Ballota nigra subsp. anatolica, Centaurea hermannii, Centaurea kileae, Cirsium baytopae, Erysimum sorgerae, Euphorbia amygdaloides var. robbiae, Isatis arenaria, Jurinea turcica, Linum tauricum subsp. bosphori, Silene sangaria, Symphytum pseudobulbosum, and Trifolium pannonicum subsp. elongatum).

The Balkan/European species (29 taxa) that occur here but are largely or wholly absent from the rest of Turkey (Anatolia) include: Achillea clypeolata (Balkan), Achillea crithmifolia (Panonnian-Balkan), Allium guttatum subsp. dalmaticum (Balkan), Armeria rumelica (Balkan), Campanula sparsa (Balkan), Cirsium candelabrum (Balkan), Dianthus campestris subsp. pallidiflorus, Dianthus pinifolius (Balkan), Digitalis grandiflora, Digitalis viridiflora (Balkan), Ferulago confusa (Balkan), Hesperis macedonica (Balkan), Hesperis pycnotricha, Hesperis tristis (Pontic species), Jurinea kilaea (Balkan), Knautia

macedonica (Balkan), Lychnis viscaria (Pontic species), Peucedanum obtusifolium, (Balkan), Pyrus bulgarica (Balkan), Rorippa thracica (Balkan), Salvia nutans, Satureja coerulea (Balkan), Senecio papposus subsp. papposus (Balkan), Sideritis scardica subsp. scardica (Balkan), Taraxacum gracilens (Balkan), Verbascum banaticum, Verbascum haussknechtii (=V. degenii) (Balkan), Veronica crinita [=V. austriaca L. subsp. teucrium (L.) D.A.Webb], and Veronica turrilliana (Balkan).

The following habitat types were observed in the Project area: coastal dunes, wetlands, grasslands, shrubs (heathland), cliffs, forests [beech forest, oak-hornbeam forests, Euxino-Thracian mixed forests, Pinus nigra forests, floodplain forests (longose)], and coastal lagoons.

Significant findings include a new species (Allium rumelicum M. Koçyiğit & N. Özhatay) for plant science (Özhatay et al., 2010), 3 new records for the Turkish flora, and 8 new records for the flora of European Turkey.

I. New records for the flora of Turkey1. Allium saxatile M.Bieb., Tabl. Prov. Casp. 114 (1798).Specimens examined: A1(E) Kırklareli: Demirköy,

Distribution: SE Europe extending westwards to N & C Italy and northwards to N and C Russia. Although few collections are annotated with regard the flower-colour in the living state, there appears to be regional difference in colour. In the Eastern Alps and eastwards, flowers are pinkish with purple anthers; those from North Italy and the Balkan Peninsula, including Turkey and Crimea, have yellowish-white flowers with yellow anthers. A detailed description and distribution of the species, “One more Allium species for Turkish flora: A. saxatile M.Bieb.”, will be published in the Turkish Journal of Botany by N.Özhatay, M.Koçyiğit, and E.Akalın (Özhatay et al., 2012).

2. Anthoxanthum aristatum Boiss., Voy. Bot. Espagne 2: 638 (1842) (Figure 2).

This species is recorded from İmroz Island (Gökçe Ada) in Davis et al. (1965–1988), and the study noted that an additional record from A2(E) İstanbul is probably erroneous. For this reason specimens from the Project area seem to represent a new record for the flora of mainland Turkey (Tutin et al., 1964–1980).

Annual aromatic herbaceous. Stem 5–60 cm. Lateral branches sparse. Leaves mostly basal, blades 0.8–6 cm × 1–5 mm, glabrous, pubescent, or scabrid; apex acuminate; ligule eciliate membrane, 1.5–3 mm. Panicle 1–4 × 0.3–1.2 cm, usually lax and lobed, tapering at base. Spikelets

lanceolate, (4–)5–7.5(–8) mm long; breaking up at maturity, usually 10 or more. Glumes exceeding apex of florets; hyaline, with green keel enfolding them. Basal sterile florets dissimilar; without significant palea; attached to and deciduous with the fertile. Lemma of sterile floret oblong; 2.8–3.9 mm, membranous, 1-keeled, 4–5-veined; pilose, awned. Awn of upper sterile floret dorsal; arising 0.1 mm up back of lemma; 7–10 mm long. Fertile lemma suborbicular; (1.4–)1.6–2.1 mm; unkeeled; margins convolute. Palea oblong; without keels. Flower lodicules absent. Anthers 2; 2.8–4.1 mm long. Stigmas 2, pubescent. Caryopsis ellipsoid.

western and south-eastern Europe; probably introduced in northern Europe and Tunisia (Greuter et al., 2005).

Anthoxanthum aristatum is more related to Anthoxanthum ovatum than to Anthoxanthum gracile in annual Anthoxanthum species.

Annual, 1–18 cm. Stem richly branched, terete, weak; internodes short. Leaves opposite; stipules caducous, triangular or ovate-lanceolate, 0.7–1 mm, membranous, apex acute; petiole 0.5–3 mm or absent; leaf blade ovate-oblong or lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, 3–10 × 1.5–3 mm, submembranous, adaxially glabrous, base attenuate, margin entire, apex obtuse; lateral veins 2- or 3-paired, minute. Flowers sessile, subsessile, or shortly pedicellate and then pedicel 0.3–0.4 mm at fruiting stage. Sepals (2–) 3(–4), ovate, 0.5(–0.7) mm, obtuse, widest and connate at base, apex obtuse; petals 3, white or reddish, broadly ovate or elliptic, slightly longer than sepals, sometimes absent in submerged plants; stamen 3, opposite sepals;

ovary compressed globose, 3-loculed; styles 3, erect, free, short. Capsule compressed globose, 1–1.5 mm in diam., 3-septicidal, remaining in leaf-axils at maturity. Seeds oblong, slightly curved, or nearly straight, ca. 0.5 mm, finely and densely hexagonal reticulate-striate.

Habitat: pools, streams, paddy fields, marshy places. Type: from Germany.Specimens examined: A1(E) Kırklareli: Dereköy

Distributed in former Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Italy, former Yugoslavia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Georgia (Greuter et al., 2005).

3. Nepeta cataria L., Sp. Pl. 570 (1753).Specimens examined: A1(E) Kırklareli: Dereköy,

İncesırt, along Mutlu Dere, 41°55′N, 27°34′E, 262 m, 20.07.2009, N.Güler, H.Ersoy (EDTU 12972!).

Distribution: Scattered, mainly in Central Anatolia, A4 Ankara; A9 Kars; B3 Konya; B4 Ankara; B7 Malatya; C4 Konya; C8 Mardin (Hedge & Lamond, 1982).

Throughout most of Europe (often naturalised), S.W. & C. Asia, Himalayas (Greuter et al., 2005).

4. Pimpinella tragium Vill. subsp. lithophila (Schischkin) Tutin, Feddes Rep. 79: 62 (1968).

Distribution: A5 Amasya (Chaudhri, 1967).E, C, & SE Europe (Greuter et al., 2005).Although this taxon was listed in The Flora of

European Turkey (Webb, 1966), it is not recorded in the flora of Turkey from the European part of Turkey. This is confirmation of its presence in European Turkey.

Allium dentiferum is often confused with other related taxa. Specimens collected by Aznavour from İstanbul were identified as A. paniculatum var. fuscum (Waldst. & Kit) Soò. During the revision of sect. Codonoprasum of the genus Allium by M. Koçyiğit, its presence in Turkey was confirmed (Koçyiğit & Özhatay, 2010). During the current field work specimens of A. dentiferum were collected from the Project area and added to the flora of European Turkey.
