THE FLORIDA PUBLIC HEALTH ADVOCATE JULY 2018
Florida Public Health Association
14646 NW 151st Blvd.
Alachua, FL 32615
Greetings FPHA,
It is my honor and privilege to be this
year’s FPHA President! I truly believe we
have an exciting year ahead of us as we
work together in sharing expertise
resources, public health priorities, and
collaborate for greater influence on public
health policies at the local and state
levels. We are Florida’s only public health
association for students and
professionals from all fields of public
health.
A big thank you to all who supported and attended this year’s FPHA
Annual Conference in Orlando, July 24th-25th and next year’s meeting
presents an even more exciting opportunity to partner and promote
the cause in public health.
It is my desire for our association to champion the public health of all
people in Florida and communities by strengthening the overall public
health profession, promoting best practices and sharing the latest
public health research and information.
I encourage you and those you work with to join and get actively
involved with FPHA and help make our association the best it can be.
We, as fellow Floridians, have much to be thankful for living in such a
great state and being leaders in our respective public health
professions.
I look forward to serving FPHA and its members as we strive to
promote public health in Florida.
Wishing good health,
- Sandon S. Speedling

Venise White, Community
Programs Manager of the Office
of Health Promotion and
Education at the Florida
Department of Health in
Seminole County is a longtime
participant at the FPHA Annual
Conferences, since 2005. She
has been a speaker and vendor
at several FPHA conferences and
this year she gave an excellent
presentation titled "Building a
Culture of Health Equity in
Seminole County." Mrs. White
absolutely loves Public Health
and is known by her mantra, “We
too are Public Health!” Venise compares the FPHA conference to a revival
or retreat to gain new skills, network with like-minded professionals,
inspire new members and recharge those who have been in the game for
a while. She is committed to enhancing the field of Public Health and is
always willing to coach and mentor new professionals and students
interested in the field. Venise accepts the theme of this year’s conference
“Striving for Excellence in Public Health" as a charge for all county health
departments and stakeholders working to make Florida the healthiest
state in the nation. “It’s time for us to work closer together across sectors
and cultures to empower all communities to adopt healthier lifestyles and
improve public health outcomes that benefit us all.”

FPHA is a registered charitable organization with Amazon Smile. What does this mean
to you? Once you begin shopping through Amazon Smile (with FPHA selected as your
charitable organization), Amazon will donate 0.5% of your purchases to FPHA at no
extra cost to you. Therefore, shopping on Amazon Smile can make a huge impact on
the sustainability of FPHA!
Through Amazon Smile, you will shop the same products at the same price using your
same login information as Amazon or Amazon Prime. Fun Fact: Our Advocacy
Committee Chair donated $29 to FPHA last year just by switching from Amazon to
Amazon Smile.
If all of our public health Amazon users switched from Amazon to Amazon Smile, we
could provide more student scholarships and other awards to our members, along with
the capability to hold bigger and better regional and state conferences!
You don’t need to be a member of FPHA to contribute. It is simple!
Just go to smile.amazon.com and select FPHA Foundation, Inc. as your charitable
organization.
Now, we challenge you, your friends, and your family members to use Amazon Smile
for your Amazon purchases.
Thank you for your contribution and happy shopping!

Patients often seek the services of an RDN because they are sick and tired of feeling “sick and tired.” Bloating, stomach discomfort after eating, inconsistent bowel habits, and similar complaints are commonplace. While diagnosing is not within the RDN’s scope of practice, we can help clients with symptom management. The comprehensive nature of RDNs’ counseling sessions permit us to dig a bit deeper into solving the complex mystery of what may be ailing patients and clients — without invasive diagnostics! This webinar will discuss food allergies/intolerances, SIBO, FODMAP, IBS, motility issues, and GERD and provide practical strategies for assisting with symptom management.
This webinar will be presented by Felicia D. Stoler, DCN, MS, RDN, FACSM, FAND on August 15, 2018 from 2-3 pm ET.
