Issue - September 2013 - Presidents Report There seems to be a great deal going on at the Club at the moment. On a sad note, Ken Moran has decided to resign, both from the Committee and from his role as Club Secretary. Ken has done an excellent job in supporting (and controlling!) Tony, over the last three years. He has also created a lasting legacy in tightening up our Club policies and procedures. His contributions will be missed. On a positive note, Peter Cairns has volunteered to take over the Club Secretary role as a casual vacancy until the next AGM. Peter Cairns and I have also taken over from Ken and Tony as the Club’s delegates to the Combined Clubs Committee. Peter is now also the Combined Clubs Secre-tary. Ken’s resignation means that we have a Committee vacancy. Any volunteers? In this issue of the Fly Fisher you will see we have included a Draft Addenda to our Constitution setting out the processes and criteria we intend to use in the future for the selection of new Life Members. These processes were used for our most recent appointments. This draft will sit on the Club website. It will be debated at the April 2014 General Meeting before being formally adopted by a member vote as a Club policy. Please forward any comments to the Committee or use the new website to post you blogs (Once it has been officially launched). We have a Club trip planned to Ballarat Fly-fishing Club at Lake Wendouree on Saturday the 21st of September. This is planned as a social day, without competitions, where the Ballarat guys will teach us how to fish on their home waters. BYO everything BBQ. If you have a boat please make the effort to come. At the Wundafly Julian Hart asked me if the Club might be interested in gaining access to his fam-ily’s house, located on the Rubicon River near the second power station, in exchange for helping with the maintenance of the house. A number of us visited the site on the way home. Pictures of the house can be made available for those interested. The Committee is currently working through a due diligence process to see if this idea is feasible. I will keep all members posted on our progress. Any final decisions / commitments will be subject to a member vote. At our last General Meeting Scott Dargan and Peter Van Oosterom presented a working draft of our new Website. The feedback from the members present was very positive. We are currently finalising the security protocols and then the website will be opened up for member interaction / suggestions / comments. We also acknowledged the very significant efforts that Peter Snare has made over the last eight years to create and run our current website. Peter was presented with a Special Club Service Award for his outstanding contributions to the Club. It is our intention that the new website will be expanded to contain a lot more Club information, Club Activities Calendars and the ability to actively search past Fly Fishers for key articles. The site is very much a work-in-progress, so if you would like any special features included please let Scott or Peter know. Regards to All Geoff Churcher

Wundafly 2013 by John McDonald

Under the threat of a bad weather forecast, Wundafly 2013 got under way with the complete faith that the Goulburn Valley Flyfishing Centre would ensure, that as per usual, the weather would be kind. Breakfast and a coffee at the Beechworth Bakery in Healesville was a mandatory starter for half the contingent. The President and Ross Baileys need for solid sustenance in the form of an egg and bacon sandwich delayed the draw somewhat but Geoff and Ross eventually made it a few minutes before starting time. For the first time, we had two members, Scott and Tony draw their own flies! David Pickering produced two lie detector nets and at 10.01 am it was go. John McIntyre almost immediately hooked and lost a very nice fish which took line and midge fly and set the standard for the rest of the day. John mumbled something about poor quality co-polymer line and he had fixed it by switching to fluorocarbon, only a few seconds later, to hook and lose another nice fish. At 12 minutes past 10, Scott Dargan scored first blood landing a nice 3 lb fish, Alistair O’Connor lost another and then Vince Lammin landed a 2.5 lb fish, followed by Geoffrey who landed a nice 3.25 lb fish. Not to be outdone Scott landed another at just over 3 lb. The losses and bad luck sto-ries continued to mount and then in quick succession, John Mennen got on the scoreboard followed by Shane Bennet who dropped a nice fish only to land a 3.25 lb on the very next cast. Someone up-stairs must have been looking after him. Geoffrey C. landed a nice 3.5 lb fish to set the new benchmark but not to be outdone after losing two consecutive fish Vince landed a three and three quarter pounder which turned out to be the heaviest fish of the day! A tough mornings fishing with at lunch only nine fish landed, 7 on Max Kepert’s superbly tied midges and two on one of Julian Harts creations. There were more fish lost than caught. True to form the weather had held and only a brief sprinkle and sporadic wind gusts, didn’t inter-rupt a challenging mornings fishing. Once again, Anthony and Assistants, cooked up a magnificent barbecue, producing more food than we could handle. If it was challenging fishing in the morning, the afternoon was more so. No entertainment of catching birds or trying to change channels by re-arranging the cabins antenna this year, only more lost fish! Nicky, Connor and Alistair continued the pattern of lost fish but the fluorocarbon came good and John McIntyre made the scoreboard as did Ken Moran. Time running out and Scott and Geoffrey tied on three fish each and then a piece of brilliant teamwork by Alistair who hooked a fish then handed the rod to Scott who masterfully landed it, to break the deadlock. A pity though there were too many witnesses, including Geoffrey who was directly opposite for the fish to count. A beautiful first for teamwork at Wundafly though. Close of competition saw only 14 fish landed and at least 16 lost. Only three fish were caught on the drawn members flies and the rest on Max’s midges. Most of the dropped fish were also hooked on the midges. In summary another great day, with fairly challenging fishing. My thanks to Scott Dargan for as-sisting with registration and collecting the fees, Dave Pickering who assisted as the second weigh master, Ken Moran for giving me a much appreciated break, Tony for picking up the prizes and Max Kepert for tying up the midges, which proved so successful. In all we had 19 members and one visitor, Kens son Paul participate on the day. Prize winners were - Most fish, with three each, Geoffrey Churcher and Scott Dargan Heaviest fish - Vince Lammin 3and 3 quarter pounds. Champion Fly Tier - Julian Hart

The 4x4 Fishing, Boating and Camping Show by Tony Hyett

The 4 X 4 Fishing, Boating and Camping Show was once again held from Friday the 23rd to Sun-day the 25th of August at the Melbourne Show Grounds. Eight of Southern Fly Fishers finest got together to attend and promote our club and fly fishing as a whole. The finest team consisting of Bruce Ratcliffe, Richard Scrivens, Charles Bradley, Garry Rapley, Peter Gadd, Graham Foxman, Ian Sambell and myself Tony Hyett. Yarra Valley ran the stand consisting of three demonstration vices for fly tying with two vices set ups for people to have a go. This proved to be very successful with consistent interest over the three days and also attracted many passers by who actually had a crack at tying. The casting area was a little out of the way this year but never the less attracted quite a number of new comers to the sport. It was interesting to note the large number of young people who were in-terested in the sport and adapted well to their first lessons in casting. Approx six during my Satur-day stint semi committed to coming to Southern and showed a keen interest in the spot of fly-fishing. This is the second year that I have attended and have found it very worthwhile. Yarra Valley put on an impressive stand and had invited, other than Southern, other clubs to participate. It was great to have club interaction. Thanks to all of the Southerns finest team who attended and to Yarra Valley for putting on the casting and fly tying stands. All in all a very successful show.

Message from the Treasurer - 2013/2014 Subs As at the 31st of August only 71% of eligible members have paid their subs for the 2013/2014 fi-nancial year. The club relies on annual subs to provide services to members so to those members who have not yet paid their subs, please take a moment to renew your membership or advise if you do not intend to renew. Members are reminded that if you are not financial then club insurance will not apply on a club trip.

Casting About The Fly Fisher news office has been informed by Alistair O’Connor that the club will be holding the Great Southern Fly-fishing Casting Challenge over the summer months and the dates to pencil in for this event are: Event One: Thursday the 14th of November. General Meeting Minutes (cont)

Fishing Reports All a bit quite at the moment but with the opening day soon upon us we hope reports start to come in more frequently. John McDonald reported on the great day (again) at our Wonder Fly event at the GVFFC. Some 20 members tried their luck with mixed success with Max Kepert’s midge patterns accounted for 80% of fish landed. A full report will be in the next newsletter. Richard Somerton fished Toolirook and landed a nice 4lb brown and reported that he had follows by some of the biggest fish seen in this water, estimated at 8lb +. Tony Hyett fished Moorabool and had another blank day because all fish were either under or over 2lb. Members Draw was $40.00. You must be in attendance to win and you have to be financial. Unfortunately the member’s number drawn had not paid his subs. Initials CO. Next meeting will be 25th September 2013 MEETING CLOSED AT 8.45pm. Following the meeting a presentation on the aspects of our new web site were presented by Peter van Oosterom and Scott Dargan. The new scope for detailing member access and club promotions was well received, the committee has some final issue to resolve covering access and protection however this new site will significantly improve the communication for both internal and external users. More soon.

Go Tie a Fly By Ross Bailey

Royal Stimulator (Tied by: Ross Bailey) Materials: Hook: Tiemco 200R #8 – 18 (or similar hook pattern) Thread: Fire Orange 6/0 Tail & Wing: Deer Hair Texas Whitetail or Body Hair Rib: Copper wire Palmer Hackle: Brown Cock Body: Peacock Herl , Red Floss or Hot Orange thread. Hackle: Grizzle Thorax: Orange Dubbing (Hot orange thread can substitute) Method: 1. Wrap even thread base from near hook eye to above barb. Tie in small clump of deer hair

roughly equal in length to the hook gape. 2. Tie in the copper wire so that it protrudes from the rear of the fly. 3. Tie in a piece of peacock herl so that the thick part is to the outside. Wind the herl forward to

a distance roughly equal to the hook gape. Tie off and trim excess. 4. Tie in Red Floss and wind a section roughly half to two-thirds the width of the herl band.

The fire orange tying thread is a perfectly good substitute for the floss. 5. Tie in another piece of peacock herl and wrap another section equal in length to the first. Tie

off and trim excess herl. 6. Tie in the brown cock hackle in front of the herl, take the hackle gently and wind evenly back

towards the rear. 7. When the hackle is at the rear of the fly, take the copper wire and catch the hackle with one

turn. Then carefully wind the copper wire forward to the front of the fly being careful NOT to crush the hackle fibres. Tie off and trim. Trim any excess hackle at the rear of the fly.

8. Cut a clump of deer hair, even the tips, measure against the hook so that the tips end up roughly level with the rear of the fly and tie in. DO NOT LET THE DEER HAIR SPIN. Pinch hair very tightly to stop spinning and tie in starting with looser turns to the rear and getting tighter as the thread is brought forward. DO NOT LET THE HAIR FLARE.

9. Trim the ends of the deer hair and trim as close as possible without cutting the thread. 10. Tie in the Grizzle hackle at the base of the wing, trim the excess. 11. Dub some hot orange material on as a thorax, tapering it towards the eye. (Alternatively –

just leave the head tied with the fire orange tying thread). 12. Wind the grizzle hackle forward in about 4 – 5 turns towards the eye. Tie off and trim excess.
