VFW AUXILIARY

DEPARTMENT OF MISSOURI

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE – July/August 2017

It is such an honor that you have bestowed upon me to serve as your Department President.

With my whole being, I pledge to do my very best for you and our great organization.

Congratulations to all our new officers in the Auxiliaries and Districts. It is a pleasure to

welcome you to the “Show Me” team. Thank you for continuing to volunteer in our

organization. Congratulations to Judy Northcutt our newly elected Department Guard. To all

my line officers, appointed officers and chairmen, and all members, I thank you for what you

have done through the years, and I appreciate you service to our veterans.

A few rules that need to be covered ---

1. I hope that your installation report has been completed and sent to Department Secretary

Jeri and to National Headquarters. If not, please make sure they are received by July 31.

If not, I must recommend that your Auxiliary be closed.

2. Please make sure your Auxiliary President and Treasurer are bonded by August 31, if not,

again, I must recommend that your Auxiliary be closed.

3. Your Auxiliary/District Officers (Presidents, Secretaries, and Treasurers) dues must be

paid by December 31 or a letter/email will be sent to relieve any non-paid officers from

office to National will be sent.

4. The Presidents of each Auxiliary and District should appoint a committee to review your

Standing Rules during the month of July.

AUDITS – Your April, May, and June audit is due to Department Treasurer Jeri Sherwood by

the end of July. Be sure that the old and new audit teams and officers work together on this one

to transition from one team to the other. President, Secretary, and Treasurer should be present

for questions, etc.

FINANCIAL REPORT to your VFW POST – Presidents at all levels shall, within thirty (30)

days after assuming the duties of office (you took office on June 10, 2017), submit to the

Commander of the corresponding unit of the VFW, a financial report (your last audit) and

membership count (Auxiliaries you can use the audit, your membership as of June 30, 2017,) of

their Auxiliary. (Sec 810 President, Duties of (All Levels).

BONDS – Your current bond for the President and Treasurer positions expires August 31 and

you Absolutely Must have this renewed prior to that date (Sec. 814 page 97 of the current

Bylaws.)

STANDING RULES – It is general practice to review and update your standing rules each year.

Sec. 211 of our National Bylaws should be helpful for more information. Sec 505 is applicable

for Districts.

MEMBERSHIP – I’m asking for continued support in this program as you work so hard on this

last year. For our department to be considered a member of the Circle of Excellence, we must

attain 100 plus percent this coming year. I know there is a delay with the MALTA change over,

but be sure to enter the membership as quickly as possible. The sooner we reach that goal, the

less likely you will hear it during the year, let’s get it done quickly!

SCHOOLS OF INSTRUCTION – There has been one school held on Programs on the Sunday

following Convention. Since there are so many changes coming this year, this was only School

of Instruction for the Programs. I am confident that, as a member, you are familiar with the

programs, and there has been little to no change in the different areas, you can do these programs

with your hands tied behind your back. If you are a new chairman, your Auxiliary President

should have/or will be receiving (they have been given to your District President for

disbursement.) a thumb drive with the programs information to be printed out for your use.

There will be many Schools of Instructions for the Treasurers and Trustees to learn the MALTA

(Membership and Auxiliary Leader Technology Access) program that will start in July. There

are many changes for the Treasurers procedure in processing dues. Please have patience and

confidence in our Department Treasurer Jeri and that she will assist you as quickly as possible in

getting the dues in and processed.

COMMANDER AND PRESIDENT HOMECOMING - October 6-8, 2017 our Fall Council

of Administration and general meeting will be held this weekend. Please join Commander

Ruben and me at the banquet. It will be held at Camden on the Lake resort in Lake Ozark, MO.

Reservation information for hotel and banquet are included in this mailing. DISTRICT

PRESIDENTS: Districts 8, 9, 12, 14, 15, 17, and 19 should provide baskets. Districts 2, 3,

and 6 should provide 15 sealed grab bags. Districts 1, 5, and 7 should provide 25 empty

lunch sacks.

In closing, always remember that you are a member of this great organization and you represent

us all. Put forth your best foot and speak kindly, and always present the “Show Me” Spirit For

Veterans.

Thankful, Grateful, and Blessed, Attest:

July/August

Promotional Material Auxiliary Brothers and Sisters, a new year is upon us and ready to begin our work of love for

our veterans. It is time to roll up our sleeves and get down to work for them. It is a great time

to start planning your projects, programs and activities for the coming year.

The Americanism Program Goals are:

Flag Education

Gold Star Mothers and Families

Promote Patriotism

POW/MIA Recognition

Smart/Maher Citizenship Education Teacher Award

There are numerous ways that your Auxiliaries can participate in the Americanism Program.

Fourth of July is an awesome place to start, many cities and towns will be holding a Fourth of

July parade. Why not ask to assist with the planning as well as participating in the parade. How

about a community picnic to help celebrate? Some cemeteries place small flags on the

veteran’s grave sites, ask the VFW Post if you can assist them with help from other youth

groups as well.

The start of school will soon be upon us before we know it. This would be an outstanding time

to contact your local schools about the Americanism Program.

A point of contact person is a valuable asset to work with to plan the many programs for your

schools. One program is “Veterans in the Classroom”. Find out when their “Back to School” is

being held. Offer to come and pass out patriotic pencils, coloring books, Presidential rulers and

Pledge of Allegiance book markers. These items are available thru the VFW Store.

POW-MIA Recognition Day is soon approaching us. It is never too soon to start planning for a

ceremony with a dinner to honor our beloved missing loved ones. See if any community

building will allow you to set up a Missing Man table for the month of September. Have you

given any thought to putting together a portable Missing Man Table for groups outside of the

VFW?

Gold Star Mothers and other family members give the supreme sacrifice when our service

members lose their lives in the line of duty or died as a result of injuries sustained in such

service. The gold star is a symbol of honor and duty rather than a symbol of mourning. The last

Sunday of September is Gold Star Mother’s and Family’s Day. It will take place on September

24, 2017.

Encourage everyone to honor these families on their special day and every day as we display

patriotism throughout this great nation.

On the Smart/Maher Citizenship Education Teacher Award, the date that it needs to be turn in

by has changed to October 31st, 2017 to the post.

I will be giving a special gift to the first auxiliary in each membership group to send in their first

Americanism report. These will be awarded at our first Department C of A/General Meeting.

I am honored as well as excited at the same time to be the Americanism Chairperson for this

year. I am looking forward to seeing all of the awesome and outstanding things that your

reports will provide.

Questions or suggestions are always welcome. Please do not hesitate to contact me at any

time.

American Flag History for July and August:

“The Continental Colors”

Page 6: The following items are in the General Orders. Some are ...movfwaux.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/General-Orders-July-Aug... · about a community picnic to help celebrate? ... The

At the time of the Declaration of Independence in July 1776, the Continental Congress would not

legally adopt flags with "stars, white in a blue field" for another year. The flag

contemporaneously known as "the Continental Colors" has historically been referred to as the

first national flag.[5]

The Continental Navy raised the Colors as the ensign of the fledgling nation in the American

War for Independence—likely with the expedient of transforming their previous British red

ensigns by adding white stripes—and would use this flag until 1777, when it would form the

basis for the subsequent de jure designs.[5][6]

The name "Grand Union" was first applied to the Continental Colors by George Preble in his

1872 history of the American flag.[6]

The flag closely resembles the British East India Company flag of the era, and Sir Charles

Fawcett argued in 1937 that the company flag inspired the design.[7] Both flags could have been

easily constructed by adding white stripes to a British Red Ensign, one of the three maritime

flags used throughout the British Empire at the time. However, an East India Company flag

could have from nine to 13 stripes, and was not allowed to be flown outside the Indian Ocean.[8]

In any case, both the stripes (Barry) and the stars (mullets) have precedents in classical heraldry.

Mullets were comparatively rare in early modern heraldry, but an example of mullets

representing territorial divisions predating the U.S. flag are those in the coat of arms of Valais of

1618, where seven mullets stood for seven districts.

Loyally yours,

Bob

Each Auxiliary can use some help and guidance every once in a while. Maybe they

need just some ideals to deal with issues that come up in the Auxiliary. Or maybe

it’s sharing the information with a new member on how the Auxiliary works. You

can find some wonderful tools to help. Go to the National website

www.vfwauxiliary.org and down load those tools. They may be the tools that

could help your Auxiliary. Some of those tools are:

• RU Healthy Auxiliary Checklist

• Healthy Auxiliary Member Questionnaire

• Auxiliary Meeting Clinic

• Healthy Communication Phone/Text Tree

• Good Job Certificate

• Health Certificate

• Mentoring Resources

Again, “Toot your own horn!” Show your community the way your Auxiliary

supports the Veterans by publicizing events and news in the paper, on the radio,

TV or any of the social media. Start a web page to keep members updated on

events coming up. Use Facebook to publicize the programs in which your

Auxiliary participates. This is a good way to communicate with the public and it

may draw in potential members.

Let’s strive this year to keep our attitude in check so that our Auxiliaries succeed.

Failure is not an option when it comes to our Veterans. Let’s “Catch the Dream

for Our Veterans” by using the “Show Me -

Spirit for our Veterans”.

2017-2018 PROGRAM GOALS:

VOLUNTEER SERVICE IN MEDICAL FACILITIES

VOLUNTEER RECRUITMENT & RECOGNITION

VETERANS VOICES WRITING PROJECT

MILITARY SUICIDE AWARENESS

Hello! I am very honored that Department President Nelda Clifton asked me to be your Missouri Department

Hospital Chairman! There is so much for me to learn. The main focus of our program is not to forget our

veterans in the medical facilities and to be their voice.

Volunteering in the VA medical facilities and nursing homes is one of the main goals of the our Hospital

Program. Talk to your VFW Auxiliary members about volunteering at the nearest VA facilities or nursing

home. Sponsor an event such as a bingo at a nursing home. It only takes a few minutes to listen to our

veterans. Reach out to the family members of our veterans. Invite them to your events at the hospitals and

nursing home. Listen to them as well. See if they need anything for their veteran. Take along the youth when

you volunteer. Many schools require service hours. What a better way to accrue community service hours

than to serve our veterans. This can also lead to recruitement of volunteers and future auxiliary members.

I am excited about Veterans Voices Writing Project. When you visit with a veteran, listen to their story. Ask if

they would like you to document their story. You can record them while you listen and type it up at a later

time. Then, if they want to share their story even further, you can submit it to the Veterans Voices Writing

Project. I hope to see more involvement in the wonderful project.

Military Suicide Awareness is so very important. When having an auxiliary event, include the available

resources to give out to the public. Be creative and think outside the box when getting the public’s attention

about Military Suicide. Lets make our communities aware of the seriousness of our active duty and veteran

suicide rate. Remember, to always have the Veterans Crisis Line, which is run by Veteran Affairs, inforamation

on you! The Veteran’s crisis line number is 1-800-273-8255, press 1 or www.veteranscrisisline.net.

I am asking for your ideas to get credit in the Hospital program! Please submit your ideas at the email address

listed above.

With the use of Facebook growing daily, I am asking you to help spotlight our hospital volunteers. Please send

a picture and an a bio of your hospital volunteers and they will be put on our Department Facebook page!

I am looking forward to seeing what each of you are capable of accomplishing in the Hospital Program this

year!

Cathline Vest, Legislative Program Chair

Your voice is essential, and as a VFW Auxiliary member

YOU make the difference! Take Action – Get Involved.

As members of this great organization, you must participate in the VFW grassroots advocacy on

many levels, from writing letters to political leaders to organizing educational workshops for members

of your community.

Use your influence to support veteran issues, you MUST be involved – and encourage

others to be involved.

All members of the VFW need to come together when an issue is not being resolved or addressed

appropriately by government officials. When our members interact with the elected and appointed

officials it draws attention to our cause, and action is taken.

Visit with members of Congress/State Officers, local legislators, and your community

Emailing officials can be one of the most effective methods of communicating. Also, in an attempt to

get members of a community to become more conscious of the issues, involve your Post and

Auxiliary in community activities and education on our goals. Use the media to raise awareness of

our issue(s). Write letters to the editor to share your point of view, use social media, or appear on

local media networks, i.e., local radio.

READ your Action Corps Weekly; educate yourself on the issues so you can confidently

communicate with your legislators, members, and the community.

As an advocate for our veterans, you can influence and help shape the future for our veterans.

“Each of us is but one individual, but working together, united in purpose, we can become

a multitude of voices that can overcome obstacles and achieve success.”

My final thought comes from one of America’s greatest politicians, Thomas Jefferson:

“We in America do not have government by the majority.

We have government by the majority who participate.”

To be an effective advocate you have to participate…and “Show-Me Spirit for Veterans”

DEPT OF MISSOURI

JULY/AUGUST PROMOTIONAL MATERIAL

MEMBERSHIP 2017-2018

We have big shoes to fill (all of us). Department of Missouri was over 100% in membership for

2017 and we must do better. Our Department President deserves this. She is dedicated to the

VFW Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary members and especially to our Veterans. IMPORTANT: We need

members to help us support legislation for our veterans. The more members we have the more

voices will be heard.

I hope my promotional material will be a source of information and inspiration.

Talk to members about what the VFW Auxiliary means to them, then build on their opinions

and pass this onto prospective members.

Talk to inactive members to determine why they no longer come to meetings. Don’t be afraid

to ask “What can we do to make you want to come?”

Make all members feel welcome at meetings and social events. Always thank everyone for

coming and tell them you hope to see them at the next meeting.

Show concern for your members by sending cards when they miss a meeting.

Bringing in new members. This will not happen unless you actively seek out possible new

members. Have an “OPEN HOUSE” to invite the community to learn about our VFW Auxiliary.

Provide your members with application cards to keep in their pocket or purse. Perhaps your

Auxiliary can provide a brochure of their activities to include with the application card.

Remember an added addition to new application card is a phone number.

M.A.L.T.A Remember dues cannot be transmitted until MALTA is ready. Should be ready by

July 10 (we hope). You will be notified when it is ready. National will send out all

membership dues cards. Each Auxiliary is responsible for sending out dues notices.

Through company and client donations, more than 2.5 million calls have been possible. With the start of summer vacations, it is important to keep in touch with the

Youth in your Auxiliary. Keep in contact with the parents and involve them, this is

a positive activity for children to be involved in. You may want to ask if they are

involved in sports and if your Auxiliary can help sponsor a team or supply shirts or

water. Please include church youth groups, home schooled children and students

needing community service that are in High School. Keeping the parents involved

makes them feel more invested in your auxiliary.

Keep the youth involved in your activities at your Post including the 4th of July,

Membership drives or an Open house and Buddy Poppy Campaigns. The youth

can also visit the VA and non-VA facilities when your Auxiliary or Post makes their

visits.

Be sure to recognize your Youth groups for their participation and encourage

them for the great work they are doing. Apply for a citation to show your

appreciation for their efforts and keep them engaged.

If you see a child thank a Veteran, witness a youth their hand over their heart

correctly, give them a R.A.P. card and/or coin. The cards can be down loaded for

free and printed at home. The coins can be purchased from the VFW Store at

www.vfwstore.org.

Please remember to involve the Youth in all Auxiliary programs, they play such an

important part of our future. Thank you for all you do in the support of our Youth

and our Veterans and their families.
